Read Across America is a national celebration that promotes reading to children and is held each year on Dr. Seuss' birthday. Most branches have special festivities planned, with many “celebrity” special guests visiting to read Dr. Seuss stories.

Family and Kids March 1 – 31 Early Literacy Station: Seasons (for all ages) - Main Library - St. Andrews Visit our Early Literacy Station for a fun activity based on the S.C. Day-by-Day Family Literacy Activity Calendar. Take 5 Drawing: Check Out to Win (ages 0 – 17) Cooper River Memorial Check out five or more children’s or young adult books, and enter a drawing to win a SpongeBob Magnadoodle, a t-shirt or another cool prize. Only one entry per day per person.

Hear how she grew up in the Gullah culture and evolved to where she is today. Deona will talk about the importance of literacy, lifestyle and making the right decisions and career choices to build the life of your dreams. PLAY: Lions and Lambs (all ages) John’s Island at 6:30 p.m. March on down to a spring season storytime. Decorate a lion mask to take home.

Read-A-Thon: Kwame Alexander (all ages) John’s Island from 9 - 11 a.m. Join us for a presentation from Kwame Alexander, a poet, children’s book author, playwright, producer, dynamic speaker and performer, who will talk about his new book Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band. The presentation will be followed by readings for young children provided by local middle and high school students.

Master Gardener Youth Committee Workshop St. Andrews at 4 p.m. Ecological art comes alive. Show your creativity by designing your own unique nature mask using natural materials. St. Patrick’s Day Celebration (all ages) Mt. Pleasant at 4 p.m. Find out what snakes have to do with St. Patrick’s Day and other peculiar facts about this holiday. Dart at 6:30 p.m. Celebrate Youth Art Month, and join internationally acclaimed artist Jonathan Green for this interactive workshop for youth ages 8 – 18. Seating is limited. Afterwards you’ll learn how to make a flip booklet for your own story. Preschool Book Explorers (ages 3 – 6 years) John’s Island at 10:30 a.m. Each month the Book Explorers read a book and do activities to go along with the book. This is a fun way to build those early literacy skills. St. Patrick’s Day Musical Presentation: Voxie – Celtic Duo with Harp and Voice Poe/Sullivan’s Island at 4:15 p.m. Enjoy this fantastic duo for your Friday listening pleasure.

Martin, Chair of the Augusta Baker Endowment in Childhood Literacy, USC Columbia, will discuss the importance of early literacy for children and the art of storyteller. It is a program designed for parents, librarians and childcare providers.

Wednesday, March 28 Read-A-Thon: Darion McCloud (all ages) John’s Island from 9 – 11 a.m. Darion McCloud, a local actor and storyteller, served as the model for the 2011 Coretta Scott King award-winning book Dave the Potter. Join Darion as he shares this experience, as well as exciting and engaging stories with the crowd. Preschool Adventure Zone: Science and Math. (ages 3 – 6) Mt. Pleasant at 3:30 p.m. Join the library for the science of butterflies. You’ll learn about the life-cycle of the butterfly, discover how butterflies are born, and see what butterfly wings look like up close.

PLAY: Here a Chick, There a Chick (all ages) John’s Island at 6:30 p.m. Bring your peeps and “chick out” these tales. Then hold a real chick. PLAY: Windy Days Dorchester Road at 6:30 p.m. Join us for fun stories, music, fingerplays and puppets.

Join us in 2012 for a yearlong celebration commemorating the 85th anniversary of Charleston’s first free public library for African-Americans. Dart Book and Lecture Series Third Thursday, every other month at 6:30 p.m. (Started in January.) John L. Dart Branch Library Learn more about the African-American experience as depicted in literature. Discussions will be led by faculty from the College of Charleston’s African-American Studies Program. This program is funded by a grant from the National Council of Black Studies.
