Bondi Beach Boy Blue by Benny McDonnell

Declan is set to become another Kilkenny hurling great until fate intervenes and he bolts for Ireland’s Antipodean outpost: Bondi. Bondi Beach Boy Blue is the story of his relationships with the important people in his life, the story of the problems he ran away from in Ireland and what he ran into in Australia. It is the story of a small town hero forced from his comfort zone and having to find his place on a larger stage.

The Good Thief by Conor McPherson Directed by Judy Hegarty Lovett

Performed by Conor Lovett

From the team that brought Samuel Beckett’s ‘Molloy’ to glór last November, Gare St. Lazare Players return with one of Conor McPherson’s early monologues.  From the playwright of ‘Dublin Carol’, The Good Thief, at turns funny and violent, is the story of a Dublin thug whose botched scarejob goes badly wrong. Lovett’s laconic delivery has something of Christopher Walken about it - Santa Barbara Independent.

Already familiar to glór audiences as the support act for Paul Brady in April 2006, this Australian musician impresses wherever she goes. Names that frequently emerge in relation to Chiara’s voice and music are Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crowe, Gillian Welch, Julie London, and even Thom Yorke. Chiara will be performing with her three piece band.

Jeff Burke and Vida Wakeman began performing in the bars and clubs of New Orleans in 1998. Their different backgrounds and shared love of American roots music helped them create a unique sound that fuses blues, country, rock & roll and bluegrass, and can only be described as Americana. The Jeff and Vida Band’s live performances showcase Vida’s powerful voice, Jeff’s superb picking on mandolin, guitar and banjo, Mike Kerwin’s slap-you-in-the-face bass playing and tight, well arranged harmonies. glór friends

Freddie White is something of a legend, having won just about every award there is. He was a founding member of Scullion, later forming The Fake, regarded as one of the seminal Irish bands of the late 70’s. With a recording career that spans 25 years, Freddie remains one of Ireland’s most individual artists.

Staged by No Theater

This US chorus ranges in age from 72 to 93. They take the music of their children and grandchildren’s generation, and sing it like you’ve never heard it sung before. From The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to Radiohead and OutKast, they dispel the myth that the ‘golden years’ are spent playing bingo and gardening. From start to finish, Young @ Heart charmed and pleased, hamming it up more than most stand-up comedians and entertaining the audience more than most stadium rockers. The result: abundant smiles and a few tears from audience members and performers alike. The Dartmouth Staff The audience’s emotions are constantly shifting from tears to outright guffaws, which is in part what makes the experience so moving. POD Presents

Gloriously vintage and unlike any other artist, Duke Special is a fervent performer who harks back to the pre-rock ’n roll era with dashes of Gershwin and orchestral swing. Dynamic, musically ambitious and bracingly eccentric, he’s right on cue with his inimitable style and lush musicality. Expect favourites such as ’Brixton Leaves’, ’Slip of A Girl’, ’Last Night I Nearly Died’ and ’Freewheel’. Duke Special is once heard, never forgotten.

A singular talent, Kildare man Jack Lukeman’s last performance in glór in May 2006, was a sell-out. His music is genre defying and to try to pigeon hole him a crooner or storytelling troubadour is a pointless exercise. His voice is three-dimensional in that he can go from a seducing whisper to an internal organ-shaking operatic top note, effortlessly. Expect a stage presence and performance like nothing you have experienced before.

The Page Turner

An emotionally taut thriller, which centres on a thwarted young pianist, the score includes pieces by Shostakovich, Bach and Schubert. Mélanie takes the Conservatory entrance exam, but fails after being distracted by the thoughtless behaviour of the chairwoman of the jury. Bitterly disappointed, Mélanie gives up the piano forever. Ten years later, however, their paths cross again, when the young woman becomes her personal page turner.

Notes on a Scandal

A witty, acerbic adaptation of Zoe Heller’s novel, Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett star in a story of two women in the grip of their own self-destructive, uncontrollable passions. Barbara is a domineering teacher. When vulnerable teacher Sheba joins the staff, Barbara becomes obsessed with the idea of their enjoying a passionate lifelong friendship. When she discovers that Sheba is having a affair with a pupil, she exploits this.

Mountain Patrol

When Ga Yu, a journalist, arrives at the mystical camp of the Kekexili Mountain Patrol, he becomes determined to uncover the real story behind the mysterious disappearance of patrol volunteers, the slaughtering of Tibetan antelopes, and allegations of cooperation with the illegal hunters. He thus joins the patrol headed for 40,000 square kilometers of wilderness. What ensues is a journey where faith wins out.

When a group of skinheads take 12 year old Shaun under their wing, he discovers parties, girls and snappy dressing, and finds some role models in the gang. Soon, however, Shaun is drawn into much more uncomfortable territory. Based largely on his own experience, Shane Meadows’ film handles the complexities of masculinity, violence and race with sensitivity and a lightness of touch.

Neil Young: Heart of Gold

Filmed live in concert, Neil Young was facing into surgery for a brain aneurysm the following week. Laconic as ever, he introduces the songs with reflections on his youth, his late father, the empty nest when his daughter left home for college, and the old guitar he bought 30 years ago. This celebration of his musical genius is an experience to cherish. For aficionados, it is sheer bliss.

After the Wedding

Transplanted Dane Jacob Peterson runs a struggling orphanage in one of India’s poorest regions. Fiercely devoted to his charges, Jacob considers all Westerners criminally spoiled, so it’s only thanks to the intensity of his commitment that he entertains his boss’s plea to return to Denmark to meet with a wealthy entrepreneur who may be willing to save their orphanage. This sparks a chain of events that changes all their lives forever.

Concrete, Steel & Bronze

New sculpture and drawings by Holger Lönze & Aoife Fitzgerald Holger Lönze’s sculptures and drawings are concerned with the poetics of the journey, reflecting on both ancient and contemporary experience. He previously exhibited in the glór gallery with Through Time & Tide, an exhibition of Currach styles in Ireland. Born in Germany, he has worked as artist-in-residence for Cavan County Council and Craigavon Borough Council. Aoife Fitzgerald has been working long-term with line, mass and negative space. Her drawings beautifully capture the energy and vitality of the city and the haphazard meeting of old, new, utilitarian and quirky. Originally from Dublin, she now lives and works in Co. Clare.

Máirín Kelly - Aspect

Kelly’s work reflects on the local and global interests in our landscape from an environmental and visual perspective. Much of the work is informed by diverse pressures on the uplands in the forms of afforestation, windfarms, and indeed in the different forms of ecology and conservation, thus illustrating the contested space the land has become. Aspect comprises a series of various habitat drawings and a group of peat paintings. The use of peat from the uplands locates the work. Using simple materials, the boundary between art and nature is blurred.

Feb 2008 - Mandscape presented by The Ark, A Cultural Centre for Children Mandscape is supported by The Touring Experiment, an initiative of The Arts Council. This is a two year action research project designed to inform and shape future policy for touring in the Republic of Ireland.
