MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Opening in 1988, The Original Mexican Restaurant & Bar was the third Mexican restaurant to open on the economically revived San Antonio River Walk. Named after its predecessor across the street, founded in 1899 and closed in 1960, The Original Mexican wanted to continue the tradition of serving San Antonio-style Mexican food on the river walk. 25 years later, Original Mexican still continues to serve big helpings of home style Mexican on the banks of the San Antonio River. Original Mexican offers such Tex-Mex staples as Chiles Rellenos, Tamales, and Fajitas as well as combination plates with names such as El Alamo, San Antonio Fiesta, and The Original 1899 Regular Supper. Along with its Tex-Mex offerings, Original Mexican offers a wide variety of flavored margaritas and beer-garitas and touts their Kangaroo Court Cheesecake as “world famous since 1968.” It’s said it must be tasted to be believed. With their large facilities, Original Mexican has seating capabilities and private dining rooms for parties of 100 or more and they offer catering for river barge parties. RIVERWALK ROYALTY By Caitlin Roetheli It’s that time of year again, when San Antonio civic and media personalities duke it out to raise the most money and become the official 2014 River Walk King and Queen. In its 27th year, the Paseo del Rio Association’s River Walk Royalty campaign features 9 worthy candidates vying for the honor to represent the San Antonio River Walk for a year. This San Antonio tradition began in 1987 with the first Mud Festival: a way to put some positive spin on the messy situation of annually draining the San Antonio River for maintenance. Since 2012, when it was announced the river would no longer be drained annually, the event has been known as River Fest, and although it’s less muddy, it packs in just as much fun, featuring a Battle of the Bands and healthy fundraising competition between Royalty candidates. As Paseo del Rio’s largest fundraising event, candidates solicit donations from November until the Bud Light River Walk Royalty Coronation on Friday, February 21st. Candidates raise money by accepting donations on the Paseo del Rio website, as well as through personal fundraising events. The 3 men and 3 women with the most votes at the end of the fundraising period earn their respective place on the court. The lead fundraisers earn the titles of King and Queen, runners up Prince and Princess, and third place becomes Duke and Duchess. 2014 Queen Candidate Brandy Lopez was the 2012 River Walk Duchess, the 2013 River Walk Princess, and hopes this year to snag the elusive title of River Walk Queen. Winners of the King and Queen title become Goodwill Ambassadors for the San Antonio Riverwalk, appearing in River Parades, events, and on the cover of RIO Magazine. All funds raised go towards Paseo del Rio’s projects, supporting their mission to promote, protect, and preserve the San Antonio River Walk. Projects include the many admission-free events the Paseo del Rio puts on every year, such as the Canoe Challenge, Mariachi Festival, Holiday events, and Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, and Halloween river parades. Paseo del Rio is also currently funding a project to 8

construct a statue memorializing the “Father of the River Walk,” Robert H. H. Hugman. Additionally, the Association works with the City of San Antonio to ensure the River Walk maintains its uniqueness, history, and remains family friendly. This year’s candidates represent a variety of San Antonio industries, including hospitality, food service, events, and medical. Collectively, the candidates are involved in over 10 charities and 20 civic committees. Many come from popular River Walk businesses, such as Howl at the Moon, River City Run, and the Grand Hyatt. Running for River Walk Royalty gives them the chance to give back to the River Walk and help maintain the popular and beautiful attraction San Antonio holds dear. For more information, full candidate bios, and to donate to the candidates, visit our website: www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/events/river-walk-royalty-candidates.

SAN ANTONIO MUSEUM OF ART By Leandra Hernandez Located on the northern banks of the San Antonio Riverwalk at 200 West Jones Avenue, the San Antonio Museum of Art, also known as SAMA has a remarkable art collection that often astounds the local visitor to its surprisingly vast array of Egyptian, Greek, Latin American, Roman, Asian, contemporary, Texan and local art. The museum, formerly the site of a brewery, namely Lone Star Brewery and once known as the Museum of Art has grown and added multiple buildings to accommodate the growth of its acquired art collections. Sizeable and exclusive donations from such notables as former Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller and Robert K. Winn have played an instrumental role in helping to establish SAMA as an important player in the art scene and more importantly, the art world. The museum prides itself and dedicates itself to present art from the cultures of the world- ancient to present and is recognized as housing the largest collections of art of the Mediterranean world in the southern US. In 2009 with the expansion of the San Antonio Riverwalk, the museum has sprawled out on Riverwalk grounds and garnered local and more tourist attention alike. The museum with its unique setting and location is a relaxing and enjoyable spot to learn, explore, dine and watch the world go by. The museum sponsors a number of educational programs for school children and young adults through tours, curriculum guides and teacher training workshops. Additional activities, hands-on and informal workshops are also available for everyone and offer a variety of learning experiences. Monthly and yearly events such as gallery concerts, an Asian New Year Festival, film series, member’s evenings and special programs showcase the current exhibitions, historical and current events going on at that time. A unique gift shop is located in the museum where you can find one-of-a-kind treasures and that gift for that special someone who might have everything. Café des Artistes, the museum’s café and small dining room is currently closed for renovations this year but plans for re-opening in 2014. The museum can also be rented out for special occasions such as galas, wedding or corporate events. The San Antonio Museum of Art has art and activities for all ages to enjoy. After a 22

leisurely stroll on the Riverwalk, stop and immerse yourself in some art and take in the beautiful scenery and setting of our unique, city-named art museum located on the San Antonio Riverwalk. Current exhibitions include: Fray Antonio Margil de Jesús: “Patron Saint of Texas, October 12, 2013- March 23, 2014 Lethal Beauty: Samurai Weapons and Armor, September 28, 2013- January 5, 2014 SAMA Hours: Mon: CLOSED Tues, Fri, Sat: 10 a.m.–9 p.m. Wed and Thurs: 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun: 10 a.m.–6 p.m.

The River Walk is the crown jewel of San Antonio, and we take pride in keeping it clean for visitors like you. Daily cleaning of the waterways is a must, and so is periodic maintenance which involves draining sections of the River for thorough cleaning and inspections to river walls, gates and more. January is also the time of New Year’s resolutions and a fresh start for downtown. We look forward to implementing innovative ideas which will help us achieve our goals for the year. We are under construction on a fourth phase of capital improvements for the historic bend as we continue to improve our assets in 2014. These necessary repairs will improve the safety and beauty of our aging, beloved attraction as we upgrade electrical, lighting and landscaping, plus add aesthetic improvements with a modern flair. We hope you enjoy your stay in our beautiful city, and will return soon to see the fruits of our labor. In March, downtown lights up for Luminaria: Arts Night in San Antonio, a nighttime arts extravaganza! In April, we host Fiesta, a festival of food, fun and parades. And anytime of year is a great time to explore our many facilities that offer food, shopping and entertainment, including our historic artisan village known as La Villita and the largest Mexican market this side of the border, known as Market Square. Don't miss the Spanish Governor’s Palace next to City Hall for distinctive architecture, inviting history, and lush courtyards. We also have a variety of downtown public parks & plazas that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Our downtown delivers year-round activity, and we hope to see you again! Happy New Year!!

Had you asked me 5 years ago about moving into the San Antonio Downtown area, the answer would have been a quick “NO”. 5 years ago I was having too much fun along the San Marcos River, living on an open ranch in a rented house that my friends’ parents owned, and was working at Gruene Hall having the time of my life. Live music, good friends, and the river all lead to a good time, but when the opportunity arose to be the General Manager of well known steak house in San Antonio, I jumped at the chance. At first I moved back with my parents. I grew up right outside the 410 loop, attended Churchill High School, and rarely ever ventured into the downtown area unless we were headed to the Majestic or The River Walk when family and friends were in town. Downtown was never a first thought in our choices of entertainment, dinner, or nightlife. So, when moving back 4 years ago, the bright lights of up and coming lofts, and the pounding of construction was getting my attention. While I was getting settled at my new job, my free time consisted of familiarizing myself with all the action that was happening around me. It was during this time that I ran into my past. My first love and boyfriend from 18 years previous, Shane Broussard, now owner of Ped-Ads and Creator of The Bike Waiter, reappeared in my life. He had started a bicycle business in the downtown core and his bike storage was right around the corner from my work. He passed by our big open windows of the restaurant every weekend and so as fate would have it, we reconnected and have been together ever since. My move to downtown became quick once Shane and I knew that we were in it together for the rest of our lives. We moved into a Duplex that he owns and rents in the Tobin Hill area right off of the St Mary’s strip. While pregnant with our son Bishop, now an adorable 2 year old, Shane was creating Bike Waiter and building the possibilities of us running the business together, raising our son together, and getting involved in the bigger picture of seeing downtown grow into a successful urban and functional residential area. Living right off the river, a ½ mile away from the booming Pearl Brewery area has been AWESOME. There are many days that I walk to work with Bishop along the river expansion into downtown. The community of business owners and residents are welcoming and fun to work along side with. Becoming involved with different organizations has made it possible for both Shane and I to express our hopes and dreams for the downtown area, the city, residents and tourists alike. Now that I have invested time in being involved and have access to information and plans that the city would like to see happen, I can’t see myself living anywhere else. In the 3 years that Shane and I have lived in the downtown area, leaving the core has become a challenge. The only time we do venture out is to visit my parents and maybe an occasional trip to the Quarry or Target. We are a very bike friendly family and try to walk to most of the things we do, and only using our car as a backup option with our business for caterings and delivering large Bike Waiter orders. We have become loyal patrons and friends with the small restaurant owners, have welcomed new neighbors to the community, and have become a sound board for anyone we know and talk to that doesn’t live close by. And now, with both Shane and I sitting on the Downtown Residents Association Board, we have become even more involved. Downtown is our home and we plan on being part of that bigger picture. Working with the city as business owners and residents, we are strong advocates for the urbanization and residential availability of our downtown core. The opportunities are limitless at this point. It’s an exciting time for San Antonio, and other cities are taking notes...I have seen many parallels within our business as an industry, and within our city. Everyone wants a piece of the action, and I am happy to say that we are already a part of it. January 2014

The Art of The Cocktail

From regular patrons to royalty, James Whittington, from Dana Point, California, has served cocktails to people from all over the world. Whittington, Lead Bartender at the new Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse on the foot of the San Antonio River, began making cocktails at a US military base bar in Latin America during the early 1990’s. “I wanted to do something that would let me interact with people from all walks of life. I like learning about people. I started with the basic drinks for my mates in the military, and then progressed to using local Caribbean rums and ingredients,” shares James. He admits that he’s never again done a Pina Colada – not after a woman in Panama climbed up a tree to cut and use a fresh coconut, and then cut a pineapple – as he cannot recreate that true freshness. He can and does, though, like to share twists on what he says should be a classic – the Paloma. He argues that the Paloma is underrated, always in the shadow of the Margarita (which in Mexico only appears in Mexican resorts). His Paloma is easy on the palate, easy for a second one!

Southtown Paloma • 1.5oz Milagro Reposado Tequila • 2oz fresh squeezed grapefruit juice • 1oz fresh lime juice • .5oz ginger liqueur • Top with grapefruit soda • 2 dashes Fee Brothers grapefruit bitters Mix Milagro Reposado Tequila with the juices and ginger liqueur in shaker with fresh ice. Strain over new ice and serve in highball. Top with grapefruit soda, and dashes of grapefruit bitters.

1170 E. Commerce Street (210) 227-8847 www.ruthschris.com Based in SA, Juan Pablo De Loera is Texas Brand Ambassador for William Grant & Sons USA. A certified Tequila Technician, he has been in the spirits industry since 2008, and previously co-owned a cocktail bar in Guadalajara, Jalisco. He loves San Antonio cocktails, and must always accompany his meals with Serrano peppers.

John Coleman’s Vision of Change monumental sculpture is the first work of art to greet visitors in the Briscoe Western Art Museum lobby. Photo by Alamo Photographic.

THE BRISCOE WESTERN ART MUSEUM San Antonio is a city rich with arts, culture and history drawing thousands of visitors to the iconic River Walk each year. Now visitors and locals alike have a new attraction to visit that combines the best that the city has to offer. The Briscoe Western Art Museum opened in late October and showcases the art of the West through contemporary and historic paintings, sculptures, photography, artifacts and more. “The Briscoe Museum provides an opportunity to showcase the art and history of the West, with more than 700 works of art and artifacts, all speaking to the region’s shared heritage,” says Briscoe Museum Executive Director Dr. Steven M. Karr. Nine galleries are spread across the Museum’s three floors, featuring works by Frederic Remington, members of the Taos Society of Artists, Maynard Dixon, Howard Terpning, Z.S. Liang, and the Museum’s first permanent installation, John Coleman’s monumental bronze, Visions of Change. The galleries are thematic, allowing visitors to explore at their leisure, creating their own narrative through themes such as movement, work, opportunity and conflict—a departure from a more traditional museum’s chronological approach. Artifact collection highlights include large and dramatic displays of fine saddles and spurs; Pancho Villa’s last known saddle; an interactive diorama of the Alamo; Santa Anna’s sword; a 17th-century silk embroidered Spanish saddle; a Comanchero jacket; a 16th century Manila Galleon trade chest, and listening stations with songs and stories of the West. The picturesque Briscoe Campus occupies over one and one-quarter acres www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

comprising the historic Museum building, the Jack Guenther Pavilion and the McNutt Courtyard & Sculpture Garden. The Museum building, at nearly 38,000 square feet, occupies the historic and architecturally significant former San Antonio Central Library built in 1930. The Briscoe Museum's renovation of the art deco/neo-classical style building includes restoration of many original architectural elements, no more impressive than in the Museum Lobby. The Jack Guenther Pavilion and McNutt Courtyard & Sculpture Garden are primarily used as event rental spaces and for Museum programming. The multi-functional event facility is ideally located for weddings cocktail parties, corporate meetings and conventions. The Pavilion features three floors with stunning city and River Walk vistas while the McNutt Courtyard is flanked by majestic canopies of heritage oaks, indigenous plants and a grand Italian pergola. In its first few months since the opening, the Briscoe Museum has welcomed thousands of visitors who enjoy seeing the West in a new perspective. “We hope that visitors appreciate objects such as spurs, guns and saddles as not just as tools of the trade, but as intricately designed works of art,” said Karr. “Whether they are embellished with braided leather, engraved silver or carved wood, these objects can be viewed next to fine art by Remington, Dixon and Terpning because they all embody the unique artistry of the West.” The Briscoe Museum is located at 210 W. Market Street on the corner of Market and Presa Streets. Adult admission is $5 and free for children 12 and under. For more information, visit BriscoeMuseum.org 31

MILTON GUESS By Tom Duff The 2013 King of the River Walk was lifelong San Antonio native, Milton Guess. Milton grew up on the Southside of San Antonio. As a young man he had a wide variety of interests, He loved sports, music, the arts and getting to know people of all cross sections of life. As he grew older he began to work in his family’s commercial laundry business. At an early age his father recognized Milton’s passion for building relationships and that became his primary role with the company. It was in these formative years that the Milton Guess many of us knew and loved began to evolve. To build business for the company, Milton began working with a number of different civic and statewide community groups. By cultivating relationships with business and community leaders, the family business grew. So did Milton’s involvement in politics and local issues. Unfortunately Milton passed away in March of 2013. Many of us will feel his loss for years to come. Milton was constantly working on issues both large and small that affected our city. He was a private and humble man. He was often most comfortable working behind the scenes, letting others be the public face of a project. You would be stunned at the number of community projects that Milton had a hand in over the years. They are simply too many to list. Two of his passions were the San Antonio River and our local Tourism Industry. Without him, San Antonio simply would not look as it does today. When asked to serve, Milton rarely said no. Over the years he served on numerous Boards and Commissions including, the Bexar County Community Arena Board, the Blue Star Art Space Board, the San Antonio Parks Foundation, the San Antonio Tourism Council, the Witte Museum, Las Misiones, the San Antonio Fire Museum, Rotary Club, the San Antonio River Oversight Committee, the San Antonio River Foundation, the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, Los Compadres de San Antonio Missions, the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, the San Antonio Hotel and Lodging Association, and many others. Milton’s most public crowning achievement is most likely the May 2008 passing of the extension of the Bexar County “Venue Tax” for improvements to the San Antonio River, Bexar County sports facilities, the AT&T Center and what we will soon know as the Tobin Center for the Arts. He and others worked 34

tirelessly on these projects for years. Next time you are dining somewhere on the Museum Reach, or going for a bike ride on the Mission Reach, know that Milton is smiling down on you. He loved being a part of revitalizing those areas. Milton’s most private crowning achievements were certainly the times he spent with his wife Norma, his daughters and grandchildren. He frequently talked of the trips they all went on, the holidays they spent together, the up’s and down’s of parenting and relationships, and what it meant to him to be a husband and father. Those were certainly his most joyful times. Many of us first got to know Milton because of a business or professional relationship. But with Milton, that did not last long. He was interested in you as a person, your family, your passions and what made you unique as an individual. Most of all Milton loved people. I speak for many when I say he was a mentor, a confidant, and above all, a dear friend. In Milton’s absence we have had numerous people fill in for him in his role as 2013 King. We were all honored to do so because Milton Guess will forever be to us, The King of the River Walk. January 2014
