HERCULES WIMBLEDON AC – NEWS & RESULTS – W/C September 4, 2016

HERCULES WIMBLEDON MASTERS PLACE THIRD IN LEAGUE FINALS What with early deadlines now being requested by the local newspapers, results from deepest Ashford in Kent were received a tad too late for Tom Pollak’s weekly round-up. Against all odds, the veterans – who had qualified for the finals by winning the local Southern Veterans league – placed third behind Southampton AC and Herne Hill Harriers.

The magnificent 4x100 team after a stunning and exciting victorious race

GOLDEN OLDIES ARE RELAY CHAMPS Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club chairman Dave Clarke showed he is still a force to be reckoned with three decades after winning the English senior men’s cross country title when

he anchored the club’s veterans over 50 team to victory in the annual Surrey road relay championships at Wimbledon Park on Saturday, reports, reports Tom Pollak.. Clarke, now 58, won the English cross country title three times in 1982, 1987 and 1988, one of the very few athletes to have done the treble. Much of the work of securing the gold medals was done by his three team-mates as he took over on the anchor leg more than two minutes clear of the second team and there was no threat of him surrendering the advantage as he increased the lead to just two seconds shy of three minutes. He covered the 2.9 miles leg in 17 minutes 19 seconds. First leg runner Stuart Fraser laid the foundations for the team triumph as he stormed round the first leg in 16:20, not only the fastest time of the quartet but also the fastest by a veteran over 50 runner, handing over a comfortable half-a-minute clear. Second leg runner Pete Clarke, Dave’s younger brother, consolidated the advantage as he posted the second fastest over 50 time of 16:50, handing over more than a minute clear. Peter Lee (17:11) extended the lead on the third leg to more than two minutes to strengthen Hercules Wimbledon’s grip on the title.

The magnificent M50 four – Dave, Stuart and the two Peters Apart from Fraser’s fastest lap medal, Hercules Wimbledon secured a hat-trick of team medals at the championships. In addition to taking gold in the men’s veterans over 50 event, their senior men’s and women’s teams took bronze medals. Marathon runner Claire Grima brought the women’s team in second on their opening leg in 17:06, with Susannah Evans (18:29) keeping the quartet in second place. Walking exponent

Estle Viljoen (19:06) managed to hang onto the silver medal position but Fran Clarke (19:45) slipped to third place securing a third team medal for the Clarke family. This was an allveterans quartet and had they run in the veterans over 35 championship they would have taken the gold medals in that category. With some of their top runners unavailable, the senior men’s faced a tough challenge in their bid to retain the Surrey title they won last year. First leg runner Andrew Penney (15:01), posting the second fastest Hercules Wimbledon time of the day, handed over in fourth place 20 seconds behind the leaders. Dimos Evangeledes (15:10) managed to hang onto fourth but was 28 seconds down on the leaders before Richard McDowell (14:53) ran a superb third leg to post the fastest Hercules Wimbledon time of the day and lift the team into silver medal position half-a-minute behind the leaders. Dom Kiralyfi (15:15) slipped to third on the fourth leg and Joe Toomey (15:50) and Matt Sharp (15:53) managed to hang onto the bronze medals. Half-an-hour after running for the A team, Kiralyfi turned out again to run the anchor leg for the B team and was only three seconds slower lifting the team from 14th to 11th. Hercules Wimbledon’s Belal Ahmed won his first Middlesex County title when he raced away with the 10km road race in Victoria Park, East London, on Sunday in 31:51. Hercules Wimbledon’s Jonathan Cornish made a winning debut in the Reading 5km parkrun on Sunday beating a 366-strong field tom win by 11 seconds in 15:58. Club mate Caroline Jackson was sixth in the women’s race in 22:16. Hercules Wimbledon youngsters filled the top two girls places in the Wimbledon Park junior 2km parkrun on Sunday through Ellen Weir (8:18) and Sophie Crump (9:17). It was Ellen’s second race of the weekend. On Saturday, she was fourth female finisher in the Isle of Wight 5km park run in 24:20. Adam Harwood was the best of the 21 Hercules Wimbledon runners in Saturday’s Wimbledon Common park run finishing second out of 446 runners in 18:21. This weekend, Hercules Wimbledon are in action in the Surrey track relay and Combined events championships at the David Weir Leisure Centre, St Helier, on both Saturday and Sunday.

‘The Clarke’s of the course in Surrey Road Relay action – just two of the 36 HW competitors there on the day - as captured by Guy Gibbons with others being seen on http://herculeswimbledonac.org.uk/Road.html Guy apologises for not capturing more of the HW runners due to the fact he was also carrying out marshaling duties. “I missed out most of the first leg runners due to the ‘day job’ of minding cars exiting the Wimbledon Club!”
