From the Principal Recently I was reminded of the power of words and how they can build us up and help us focus on what is important. A good friend of mine’s father was a fighter pilot in World War 2. He survived the crash into the sea when his plane was shot down over the English Channel, only to be picked up by a German U Boat. He then spent three years in a prisoner of war camp. Most of us would despair at being in such a situation but during the three years he was captive, my friend’s father wrote some poetry which I find inspiring and so very relevant today. I share this with you. To our friends Count your blessings, so we’re bidden, Add them up - then choose the best, Guard it jealously and strongly, Shield it - never mind the rest. So I count my blessings over, List them all with thoughtful care, And the blessing I place highest, Is, to me, beyond compare. Fame and fortune, wealth and honour, These rely on whims of chance, But I have one prized possession, Staunch throughout life’s crazy dance. For, provided I act straightly, Till this great adventure ends, Fate can never rob me, Of the friendship of my friends. Norman Maxwell Dunn - 1 August 1942. A wonderful reminder of the gift of friendship in our lives and that it is to be honoured and treasured, though all our circumstances. A great message I think, for the young women of Tara and for us all who care for them. (Mrs) Susan Middlebrook

Community News Message from the President The P&F is a wonderful opportunity for parents to gather and to take on one of the many roles that can be undertaken to enhance our School and the community. It is not only a wonderful way to support and encourage our girls but it is also a fantastic opportunity to meet and connect with other parents. I took up this position in 2015 and it has been a privilege to stand beside so many dedicated parents. It is a delight to see how the efforts of this group can be seen and enjoyed by all the students and all the parents. As part of the P&F, I have been able to contribute towards the community spirit in being part of many events and committees. P&F Meetings a Source of Information P&F Meetings are attended by Mrs Middlebrook, Mrs Hammond and Ms Adams where they update us with important issues and academic plans that affect our girls now and in coming years. The meetings give parents a platform for feedback and an opportunity to voice an opinion. Inviting all Parents & Friends

Tara Dads Club Dad and Daughters Sports Day On Saturday 20 August, the Tara Dads Club (TDC) held its inaugural event, which comprised of some warm up games - dads versus daughters relay race, overs and unders and a hula-hoop face off, followed by a soccer game and tee-ball/softball game. The daughters definitely started well, winning the warm up games, 3-0. Some great skills were shown by the dads and the girls! Some dads had good soccer moves with several dads re-living their youth with diving saves at goal, some good setup plays and I am sure, a lot of sore muscles the next day! Finally, the softball game. I knew the dads had a game on their hands, when Sanjit Roy threw the first pitch and the daughters’ first batter ... smashed the ball into the outfield, and ran all the way to 3rd base. The end result was that the dads and daughters sports day was a success! The TDC would like to especially thank Year 12 students, Zora Holz and Laura Mallett, for their contribution to the day, and all the dads and daughters who attended for supporting the TDC. Our aim is to mark this event as an annual feature of the TDC’s calendar.

I would encourage and invite all Junior and Senior School parents to take this opportunity to participate at the next meeting on Tuesday 20 September in the Bowern Room at 7:30pm. .

Be part of the P&F Parents are also invited to nominate for a position on the P&F at its AGM scheduled for 18 October in the Bowern Room at 7:30pm. Nomination forms can be obtained by sending me an email via [email protected]. If you have any questions or ideas, or would like to a topic placed on the agenda please contact Mrs Jo Sanker (Yr 9), P&F Secretary or by writing to me directly via [email protected]. Future TDC Events in Planning As the daughters are concentrating on the business end of the school year, the TDC is now investigating a dad’s only event for the latter part of this year. As more details become available, we will be sharing them with you. Become a Tara Dads Club Member Tara Dads Club is a special club open to past and present dads of Tara girls. A life membership is offered by paying the once-off membership fee of $20. The club’s purpose is to provide member dads and daughters opportunities to engage in fun, social activities together. To become a member, register online at www.tara.nsw.edu.au/events.asp. Parent Trivia Night 50s & 60s Rock n Roll On Saturday 20 August, the Senior School Hall was transported back to the 50s and 60s with wonderful banners, colours and graphics. The stage was set and the theme of 50s & 60s Rock n Roll generated lots of fabulous costumes and conversations! It was difficult to choose the best costumes! Winner of the female costume was Linda Leo as a superb ‘Priscilla’ and best male costume was ‘Danny’ aka Scott Mannix. MC from Trivialities, Glen, kept the guests busy with guessing and games as well as singing to the ‘old’ music - everyone seemed to know the words! The trivia scores were tight and with a tie-breaker, the winners on the night were the Year 12 ‘Blast from the Past’ team of Wybengas, Malletts, Gordons, Stones and Williams. This group have been supporting the Trivia night for a number of years so it was fitting that they were 2016 Trivia Team winners! The second highest score went to Kim Fitzhenry’s team, ‘Incognito Elvis’. A huge thank you to Ilaria Mills (Yr 8) for her generosity and her terrific planning. The evening was a success and all who attended had a great night of fun and laughter. Thank you to everyone who supported this social community event. (Mrs) Wendy McDermott, Community Coordinator

Junior School

From the Head of Junior School Arts Alive I trust you were able to attend our Arts Alive event last week, which included the inaugural Art Walk and ELC-12 Art Exhibition. The Art Walk was really remarkable and quite unlike any other event that the Junior School has held. To see the girls so involved in their creativity, alongside their parents, was really wonderful. In this busy world, to stop and experience joy just for being creative without any benchmarks or expectations, was such a pleasure. An added bonus, was the way the event allowed staff to express their imagination too, which helped the girls and their parents to see them as artists. Arts Alive in the Junior School was Ms Jessica Worden’s vision, beautifully and humbly executed. Since Jess has been at Tara, she has sought to reconceptualise the girls’ view of themselves as artistscapable and innovative and worthy. I liked how all the adults on the Art Walk got a sense of this about themselves as well.

School, is the diversity of interests, passions and talents, and how each girl is learning the skills and attitudes necessary to pursue and develop them. Congratulations also to Arnvi Maharaj (5 Harriet). Arnvi has been selected into NSWCIS Girls Cricket Team for 2016. She will be playing in the NSWPSSA Championships in the Hawkesbury Region 31 October - 3 November. Cricket is my preferred summer sport (obviously netball takes over during the cooler months!), and given that ‘opening the batting for Australia’ was my childhood ambition, I am delighted to see Arnvi progress so far. Arnvi represents her school and her association (IPSHA) so faithfully and with such integrity. I am delighted for her. At the recent NSW Interschools Snowsports event at Thredbo, our amazing Alpine Division 6 team shone. Congratulations to Tara’s awesome foursome, Alisha Seraglio (1 Emily), Georgia Yuen (1 Emily), Lucinda Martin (1 Billie), and Emmeline Powell (2 Clementine Rose), who have successfully qualified for Nationals on the weekend of 10 and 11 September at Perisher. Girls, your teachers, friends, parents and I are so admiring and in awe of your efforts and your #GoTara attitude! All the best for this next stage, and don’t forget to thank your amazing mums for all they have done to help you reach this event!

I am also happy to share with you the latest success of our very keen book reviewer, Jemma Simpson (4 Holly). As you may recall, Jemma is a valuable member of the Scholastic ‘Review Crew’, supporting the work of Scholastic in their quest to put quality literature in the hands of young readers. Jemma’s latest review, of ‘Marge in Charge’, was chosen for Issue 7 of Scholastic’s book club brochure. Excerpts of Jemma’s review: This comedy/adventure book is about Jemima and Jake Button and their not-quite-ordinary baby sitter, Marge. In this book, there are 3 chapters which all tell a different story. In the first chapter, Marge Babysits, Marge teaches Jake and Jemima her special way of doing things. The second and third chapters are both full of laughs and unexpected twists and turns. I think this is a really great book because of the interesting storyline, relatable text and humorous parts. My favourite part was when Marge blew all the water out of the tuba. I give it a five-star rating and recommend it for girls aged 6-10 years. It is wonderful to see that Jemma is able to share her love of reading with such a wide and appreciative audience. One parent said “It was exciting and innovative to see the whole school come to life with art”. I couldn’t agree more. courageous in the face of uncertainty. I have only just started it but already would recommend it for our older readers and parents. Also on my current reading list: ‘Everyone Brave is Forgiven’ by Chris Cleave (for the grown ups) and ‘Where is the Green Sheep’ by Mem Fox (for everyone!). I am looking forward to adding ‘Exploding Endings 3 – Cursed Pants & Cranky Cops’ (by our very own, Mr Tim Harris) to that list this week! Mr Harris’ blurb reads: How do you protect yourself from a stalking mother? What are the 79 cheekiest excuses for not doing your homework? Why is your pencil case holding dangerous secrets? And what happens when you discover your teacher is not who she says she is? Find out in this hilarious collection of short stories. One thing is guaranteed – you will NEVER pick the endings! Arnvi Maharaj of 5 Harriet has been selected into the CIS Cricket Team following trials at the SCG two weeks ago. Arnvi impressed the selectors with her accurate bowling and enthusiasm in the field. The team of 12 girls selected will compete at the NSWPSSA Championships later in October. Congratulations Arnvi! IPSHA Athletics Carnival The IPSHA Athletics Carnival was held on Monday 29 August at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre and our team, consisting of athletes from Year 2 through to Year 6, represented our great school marvelously. Both our relay teams worked extremely hard at training and our senior team placed 7th overall, only one placing shy of qualifying for the CIS team. We had some terrific individual results in the sprints with many girls placing in their heats. Abigail Omage of 5 Harriet and Alyssa Hodge of 5 Stella placed 7th in the 100m and 200m sprints respectively and again, only narrowly missed out on progressing to the next representative pathway. Abigail Omage placed 2nd in the 11 Years long jump while Jessica Coppolelli of 4 Holly placed 2nd in the 8-10 Years shot put and discus. These two girls will now compete at the CIS Athletics Carnival in the coming weeks. Congratulations Abigail and Jessica, and the entire Tara Athletics Team. Year 10 elective Drama Students in the two Year 10 elective Drama classes are each performing a play that they have been rehearsing as a class during Term 3. Each play will be performed for one night only in the Tara Theatre starting at 7pm. There is no ticket charge. Family, friends and fellow students are invited to these plays. • Friday 9 September - 10.1 Drama will present ‘The Formal’ - a comical look at the biggest event in any schoolgirl’s life – the formal. • Tuesday 13 September - 10.2 Drama will present ‘Small Poppies’ - a partly humorous and partly serious evocation of the beginning of school for children in kindergarten and the beginning of life in Australia for refugee children. Please come and support our Drama students in the great work they do.

He now has a foot of steal in his shoulder and is lucky to be alive. Brett told us how he got his disability, he fell from an 8m height from rockclimbing to the top but his rope wasn’t tied on so he fell. He smashed both his ankles and broke a few vertebrae. He is now in a wheelchair without being able to walk. Hannah was born with her disability. She has no movement in her feet and she cannot move her hands. These stories had the grade in tears.

Year 9 PDHPE Day recount On Wednesday 3 August, Year 9 participated in a PDHPE day , ‘Trills Without Spills’. The year group was placed into four groups to participate in various activities around the school. Different presenters came to talk about topics including bullying; wheelchair basketball, road safety, skills for life and safety in everyday life. At the beginning of the day, the whole grade watched ‘The Hurting Game’ presented by Brainstorm Productions. The play’s two characters, ‘Samantha and Jimmy’, have been friends since kindergarten and the production showed their different experiences with bullying, cyberbullying, alcohol, social media, body image, and peer pressure. It got us thinking about if we can relate to the scenarios in the play and how we should handle them. After the play, the actors had a discussion and we spoke about the people that we can go to if we ever need help.

Paul Wade then gave a talk about his career. He had brought along jersey’s that he had swapped with other teams when he played for the Socceroos. He told us the story for each of them. One jersey was from Argentina and belonged to their best player, Diego Maradona. Paul said that he was nervous about playing him, but weeks before the match, he studied tapes of Maradona and learnt the best ways to defeat him. Before the match, Paul said he was nervous, but never scared. That match, Paul stopped Maradona from scoring a single goal because he had studied him and learnt all the tricks he was going to do. Paul related this back to the HSC. He said if you study a long time before, by the time it comes, you will be nervous, but never scared. Paul also talked about how he had epilepsy and how he had to live with the challenges of that and had to change his way of life because he could no longer play soccer. He started to coach coaches, became a sports commentator and started doing talks at schools that motivate and inspire people. He definitely motivated and inspired us.

After recess the year separated into smaller groups and went to their first activity. One of these activities was wheelchair basketball. Brett and Hannah were the leaders for the activity. They gave us a quick rundown on how to use the wheelchairs. It was difficult to pass and shoot because we didn’t have the ability to bend our knees and we could not stop suddenly without flying out of the chair. It was a good experience, but we had to keep in mind that we were able to stand and walk away whilst people like Brett and Hannah who have to use a wheelchair cannot. Another activity was soccer with ex-Socceroo’s captain Paul Wade. We did a number of fun drills such as keeping a ball between two people’s foreheads and having to get down to the ground and stand back up without dropping the ball. We played a game of soccer and everyone was getting into it and enjoying themselves.

The final activity was from Trent who worked for over 10 years as a police officer. He spoke to us about the use of drugs and alcohol. He told us about the dangers that us girls could be in when under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Trent also told us about how we always have to be cautious of our surroundings otherwise we could be put in a life threatening situation. We all took the information very seriously and will never forget how it could really help us one day. The day overall was a lot of fun and we got to experience new and exciting things.

Before lunch, Brett and Hannah gave us a talk about road safety. Brett explained a major incident in his live that dramatically changed the lives of his friends. His friends were all drunk, Brett was not licensed but drove his friends home anyway. His friends encouraged him to go faster, which resulted in them crashing. His then girlfriend was badly hurt and is still suffering the consequences. Hannah told us about her boyfriend who was speeding at 180 km/hour down a straight and hit a pot hole losing control. He kept driving through a fence and a creek before rolling and stopping near a creek. He punctured both his lungs, broke multiple ribs and his collarbone. He had to wait in the car 10 hours before he was rescued, and a quarter of his lungs were working.

Congratulations to Janice Ye and Sophie Palmer who competed at the Rhythmic Gymnastics Levels 3-6 Chatswood Invitational held on 20-21 August at Chatswood Leisure Centre, Chatswood.

Netball Round 5: Our ‘top 3’ teams played well executed games of netball but were ultimately beaten by their stronger opponents. Tara 1 played a challenging game against Pymble Ladies College with accurate shooting from Kaitlin Staniforth and improved centre court action from Jacqueline Burnand. Although the final score was 18-26 to Pymble, the 18 goals scored by Tara 1 highlights their ability to counteract their dominant opponents and continue playing with their tough fighting spirit. Tara 2 played their best game of netball yet with amazing team work and coordination skills from all team members. Shayal Prasad scored an amazing 11 goals with her ability to shoot with accuracy and confidence! Unfortunately, Tara 2 were beaten, 12-19, to Abbotsleigh after their comeback, 14-10, in the third quarter. With this being said, they were able to demonstrate their strong fighting spirit during the game. Tara 3 also executed their best game of netball to date performing significantly better than previous games with excellent team work and speed around the court. However, they were unlucky losing, 10-27, to Loreto Normanhurst. Congratulations to the girls for conquering a tough week of netball and good luck for the games ahead!

Hockey Round 5: Tara 1 finished their game on the weekend with another tied score, 2-2! Well done to Karla Nicholl (Year 11) and Maddison Stubbs (Year 11) who scored the goals for the team. A special mention should go to Angelina Saroufin (Year 11) for her excellent playing throughout the match in the midfield! Tara 2 won their game, 2-1! The team has been undefeated throughout the whole season and managed to continue their winning streak in a tough match on the weekend. The first goal was scored by Holly Reuben (Year 12). The second goal was scored in the last two minutes of the game by Nina Kettle (Year 11). It was a tough and exciting match to watch. We are so proud of the whole team and their consistent excellent playing throughout the season! Tara 5 lost their match, 0-2, and made the long drive to Mittagong to verse Frensham in a tough match. No goals were made in the first half by either team. Unfortunately, Frensham managed to score 2 goals in the second half and won the match. A noticeable mention should be given to Shara Percival (Year 7) who was so close to scoring a goal for the team! Well done Tara!

Round 6: This week of netball for Tara presented challenging and tough opponents which concluded with an array of different results. Despite the loss that Tara 2 faced against Ascham, Laura Mallet played an absolutely amazing game. Her position as Goal Defence saw her exhibit supreme netball skills blocking the opponents from scoring a multitude of goals. Congratulations to the junior firsts who performed excellently winning their game, 24-22. In particular, Sarah Fahd and Rachel Venhuizen were astounding in defence, managing to block set plays and prevent the opposition from scoring a number of goals. Sophia Bianchini and Genevieve Wiltshire also played brilliantly as Goal Shooter and Goal Attack, shooting with accuracy and determination! Despite a close loss, 29-34, Tara 3 improved dramatically from their previous week of netball with Rukshali Baddevithana making a number on interceptions whilst in defence helping reduce a large number of goals from being scored by the opposition. Once again, congratulations to the girls for conquering a tough week of netball and early morning trainings. Good luck on your last round next week!

Round 6: Tara 1 played another tight match, ending the game with a tie, 1-1. Angelina Saroufin (Year 11) scored a memorable goal for the team, which deflected off a defender into the high corner of the goals. Goals from the opposition were skillfully defended by Junior 1st goalie Kate Hopman (Year 8) who was able to fill in for the team on a late notice. Kate was an excellent and much needed addition to the team - thanks Kate! Unfortunately, Tara 2 ended their undefeated winning streak on the weekend. It was their first loss of the season, 0-3. The team was playing down with nine players and did a great job at keeping up with the 11 members from the opposition in the first half but Frensham managed to score against Tara in the second half. Nevertheless, it was a tough match! Well done Tara 2. Tara 3 lost their game, 0-2. Vasudha Soni (Year 10) is to be commended on her great forward play in the attacking end of the field. Junior 1st team Tara 4 also came out with a loss, 0-2. Gabriella Saroufin (Year 7) played a great game in the mid and attacking end of the field, doing a perfect job of moving the ball through the field. Again, goalie Kate Hopman (Year 7) managed to deflect many goals, following her cameo for the Senior 1sts. Tara 5 played a brilliant game and won, 3-0. Catherine Chen (Year 8) scored one of the goals for Tara, aiding the team in winning their first game of the season! Well done girls.

Cross Country and State Snowsports

Dance News

From 23 to 28 August, Tara had several teams competing in the Interschools Snowsports State Championships in events such as Alpine, SkierX and Cross Country Skiing. Once again our girls competed fantastically and came away with some incredible results. A huge congratulations to Adele Selig who placed first in the Division 2 Alpine and third in the Division 2 SkierX and to Isabella Moon on her first place in the Division 3 Cross Country Freestyle. The Division 2 Alpine and SkierX team, the Division 6 Alpine team and the Cross Country relay have all progressed to Nationals. Skiing in blue skies and bright spirits, the Tara team made us proud not only in results but in the way the girls presented themselves encompassing the Tara values of affirmation, opportunity and integrity.

On 3 June 2016, Tara competed at the Extreme Dance Competition at St Ignatius College Riverview. Tara performed a contemporary piece to ‘Faded’ by Alan Walker and received a highly commended against 16 other groups. Our jazz piece was to ‘Be Right There’ by Diplo and Sleepy Tom and we were up against 21 other schools. Although Tara did not place in this category, we had a lot of fun dancing on stage! Overall, it was a great night filled with joy and excitement.

Last Sunday, our contemporary and jazz dance troupe competed at the Hills Dance Spectacular at Pacific Hills Christian School. We were up against more than 15 other schools and although Tara did not place, we thoroughly enjoyed showing off our moves! We are excited to participate in the many more competitions to come. I can’t wait to see how all our girls go in the national championships coming up. A big thanks to our volunteers and team managers for looking after the girls and helping to run events smoothly and to Tara Old Girl, Leah Nye, for assisting at events.
