Living Savior Lutheran Church and Preschool July/August 2016 Newsletter PRIME TIME In entertainment/television language there are certain hours of the day are determined to be “prime time.” We hear a lot about prime time television. The ads on TV inform us: “This season’s prime time line up of shows are....” During football season, television will show certain games that are considered “prime time.” There is talk of prime time for this and prime time for that. By “prime time”, we mean a time that is preferred, is important, is advantageous, is a better than normal opportunity. No time is more prime than our time together on Sunday morning. I can think of nothing more opportune or more essential to anyone of us than to begin with God another week of living. Whatever importance other hours of the week may have for us, none can be more important than the hour when we gather around the cross of Jesus, and hear his Word, receive forgiveness and strengthen our faith with his holy Supper. As Christians, we need each other, and it is God’s will that we gather for worship. In the letter to the Hebrews, we read these important words: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (V. 24-25) In the interest of entertainment or information, prime time may be on some other day and at some other hour; but on the interest of living, no time is more prime than this hour on Sunday morning. God’s peace this summer! Pastor Andrew C. Lissy

Vicar’s Voice

As my time here at Living Savior draws to a close, I would like to spend some time looking at Community. As I have done over the last few months, I continue to focus on the theme for this year’s LCMS National Youth Gathering: In Christ A lone. The main focus being Paul’s letter to the Philippians and the importance of Identity, Humility, and Community. Community is really the culmination of this conversation. As Christians we find our identity in Christ, and we place others before ourselves in humility. In doing both of these things, something is formed: Community. I have always been fascinated by the profound nature of community. Every community has something that binds it together. The key element is found in the word itself: Unity. Within every community, there is a unity around an idea or a cause. For us as Christians, our unity comes in being a unified body of Christ. Community is about a combined Identity and Humility. True community clings to the identity that binds it together and can only survive in true selflessness. Community is the final goal. Do you ever wonder why Christians gather together on Sundays? It is something I have thought about a bit. If God is everywhere, then why do I need to wake up for church on Sunday? Couldn’t I go for a hike and bask in God’s beautiful creation instead? I suppose you could. But if that is the type of Christian life you choose to lead, you would miss out. In fact, being the Lone Wolf Christian may indeed prove to be a detriment to your relationship with God. Why? Because the Christian life is one of community. Scripture illustrates Satan as a roaring lion looking to devour. If you’ve ever seen a predator hunt, you know that they separate one from the herd to target. Strength comes in numbers. Together we encourage each other, lift each other up. Why do we come to church on Sunday? Not only to bring praise and thanks to our Savior Jesus Christ; not only to receive strength and forgiveness in the Sacraments; but also to gather together as one community. We gather for each other. Sometimes you may feel like you don’t want to be there, but perhaps someone needs YOU to be there for them. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. ~ Matthew 18:20 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. ~ Proverbs 27:17

As many are aware, Living Savior has become a partner with a ministry group on campus called Bridges International. Over the last few months, we have been looking to get involved in the outreach that they do to the numerous international students that call George Mason University home. Throughout the summer there are many opportunities to continue to connect with these students. Since they are still on campus, Bridges continues to meet with these students and continues to pursue faith conversations with students from numerous different cultures and backgrounds. Currently, the Vicar’s house is the location of a Bridges Bible study for international students that are searching and asking questions of faith. This Bible study is hosted every other Wednesday at Vicar Aaron’s house for the rest of July.

But we need your help! One of the main things we do to draw in students is provide a meal. If you would like to get involved come help with the meal. The food that is provided must not contain pork since many students are Muslim but other than that, there are not really any restrictions. Just come with meal ideas and a serving attitude! Plus this could be a great opportunity to potentially meet some of these students and interact with them. If you are interested in getting involved please let Vicar Aaron ([email protected]) know so he can plug you into this new and exciting ministry!

Introducing Vicar Kevin Barron! Leslie, my wife and I have two children, Caleb and Nathaniel — who was born on June 3, 2016. I was born 31 years ago and raised in Maryland to a family that was divided on religion. My Mother was raised as a Roman Catholic and my father would claim that he was a Methodist but never would participate in any religious activities that I can recall. I was blessed that my Mother decided that we needed a foundation in the faith, so she sent us to Sunday school. I was confirmed in the Catholic Church upon reaching the eighth grade. After this time, the church never made it a priority to keep us involved, and my Mother didn’t really stress to us the importance of staying grounded in the faith. This naturally led me to fall away for a number of years. After a while, however, I did begin to realize that something was missing from my life. I went back to the church and I had decided I was going to try to be a priest. For a number of reasons this did not work out the way I had envisioned it. So I turned my focus elsewhere and went into law enforcement. It wasn’t until I was close to the end of my career in Correctional Law Enforcement that I wanted to rejoin the church but did not know where I belonged. A few weeks later I met Leslie and she invited me to go to her church. Leslie was a life-long Lutheran, so I went and it fit. Over time the desire to become a Pastor came back. Through the encouragement of my family, Pastor, and friends, I ended up at Concordia Seminary. Since we have been at seminary, we have experienced challenges and joys that have helped myself and Leslie grow. I have been overjoyed to have world class faculty teaching my classes, but also the opportunity to live a truly Christ centered life. Since moving to St. Louis, we enjoy a better devotional life as a couple and I have enjoyed the beginning process of teaching my son about Christ and what Christ has done for him. In every way it has been constantly reaffirmed that this was the right choice to make and this is where we belong. I thank God that I have had the prior experiences that I have had in my life. Besides being in law enforcement, I had the opportunity to work for the Federal Government and travel all around the world, the most exciting of these places was Afghanistan and a few other countries in the Middle East. My travel and my time at the prison allowed me to grow up and figure out who I really am as a person. I learned communication skills that allow me to talk and communicate effectively with almost anyone from any background. I learned how to do many different roles at different times in order to get the most positive outcome possible from a variety of situations. All of this has led me to where I am, for good and sometimes with challenges as my life experiences have changed. But I thank God for all the opportunities that he has placed before me, and I thank God for this opportunity as well. With the help of God there are no challenges that I can’t overcome and with every challenge comes growth which I always look forward too.

“Ambiente de Gracia”

The name of our recently founded congregation is "Ambiente de Gracia" (Environment of Grace) Baptist Church and we were incorporated in the state of Virginia on January 26, 2016. This name was chosen among twenty others, that were initially proposed by our very first members. The voting for this name was almost unanimous for this name for a church that was being born under the same characteristics.

On May 22, 2016, ten months later, after having to worship in a small and somewhat uncomfortable space, but always hopeful, we celebrated our Constitution/Inauguration Day and with no doubt that the hand and guidance of the Lord has been with us throughout this journey.

Our Pastor Julio Ruiz is from Venezuela, and has been an ordained pastor for over 42 years. He has been married to his wife Carmen for 37 years. They have three beautiful daughters. GOOD TO KNOW ! TICK REMOVAL

“A nurse discovered a safe, easy way to remove ticks where they automatically withdraw themselves when you follow her simple instructions. ‘I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick.’ Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20); the tick will come out on it own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. Please pass on.” For more information on the life cycles of ticks go to: www.mainelyticks.com.
