2009 Anne Arundel County
Elementary Science Fair Congratulations to each of our talented student scientists who participated in this year’s Anne Arundel County Elementary Science Fair May 20–21, 2009. The projects were especially strong on data collection and analysis and our participants have much to be proud of. There were a significant number of projects related to improving the environment. Our judges commented on this “green theme.” Thanks to principals, teachers, and parents for supporting student science programs and paving the way for students to do their research and share their findings. This year there were 50 schoolbased science fairs across our district. I especially thank our special guests from the Board of Education, Mr. Enrique Melendez, Board President, and Mr. Michael Leahy, Board member, who, along with Mr. Karl Behringer, Director of Science and Technology, shook the hand of each and every child, and posed for group photos. Once again, our host was Mr. Kevin Buckley, principal of Marley Middle School along with a very gracious and hospitable staff. As our world places increasing emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the skills that students learn and use as they do science projects enhances their opportunity for success as they move through school and into their chosen career. I look forward to seeing students at next year’s Elementary Science Fair in May or the Secondary Science and Engineering Fair next March.
