From the Desk of Skip Auld, Anne Arundel County Public Library CEO
Anne Arundel County Public Library Board of Trustees
We are pleased to announce that the Maryland City at Russett Community Library has
received one-time funding from the state of Maryland to open on Sundays from September through May, beginning later this summer. Located at 3501 Russett Common in Laurel, the Maryland City at Russett branch will join five other Anne Arundel County Public Libraries with Sunday hours. The state will also provide money to purchase additional public computers and a Play & Learn Station (PALS) for the branch. PALS are all-in-one digital learning stations for children between the ages of two and 10. Sunday hours at the Maryland City branch were financed for many years by the Laurel Racetrack Impact fees, before that fund dried up in 2012. Anne Arundel County currently receives local impact grants from Maryland Live, a portion of which are used to fund regular operations at the Severn Community Library, the branch in closest proximity to the casino. The North County, West County and Annapolis Area Libraries and the Severna Park and Crofton Community Libraries will be closed on Sundays beginning June 1 (following the Sunday, May 25 holiday closure). Those libraries, as well as Maryland City at Russett, will resume Sunday hours on September 7. No matter which library you visit this summer, you’re sure to find something for everyone in your family. Our Summer Reading Club kicks off in June with programs, activities and contests for all ages. Simply look through the pages of this publication to find a concert, special program or book that piques your interest. Enjoy! On our Cover: Students from Woodside Elementary School in Glen Burnie, the winner of the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s 2013 Chesapeake Cup, prepare to Fizz Boom Read! this summer at the Library. Anne Arundel County Executive Neuman finds her place of relaxation at the Library
T
he Laura Neuman today is a lot different from the person she thought she’d be four decades ago. Back then, growing up in an East Baltimore row house, it was hard to envision a future outside of that community. That is, until she found the library. There, she could read the books that would take her to other places and enjoy the stories of heroes who would become her role models for life. “Books opened up a world of opportunity for me,” said Neuman, who serves as Anne Arundel County Executive and one of the County library’s biggest fans and supporters. “I would spend hours there, just walking down each row, touching the spines of the books and thumbing through the pages. The library was a place of relaxation for me. It was a place that would allow me to dream.” When she was younger, Neuman said she would walk to the closest library – the now-defunct Highlandtown Branch. Her other favorite branches were Northwood, Towson and the Maryland Room at the Enoch Pratt Library, where she

would peruse books about famous and notable Marylanders. These days, Neuman herself is one of those notable Marylanders. How she came to office is fascinating and worthy of its own book. Neuman attended high school in Baltimore, but dropped out before graduating. Even then, she used the library to fill in the gaps in her education. Eventually she earned a General Educational Development certificate. Laura Neuman is not someone to take “no” for answer. Without a college degree, Neuman made a call to the investment firm T. Rowe Price for a job. She was drawn to the company not because she knew their work, but because of the sound of the firm’s name and recognition that a job there might launch her career. After making several unreturned calls, she finally made the connection that led to an interview and ultimately a job in customer service. Neuman was later admitted to the MBA program at Loyola College (now Loyola University), without an undergraduate degree. She then was accepted in the executive program at the Stanford University Graduate School. Eventually she went on to raise more than $15 million in venture capital for Matrics, Inc., a Columbia-based technology firm that sold for $230 million. Neuman had an equity stake in Matrics and, after the sale, was able to pursue other goals, including public service. After a stint as CEO for the Howard County Economic Development Authority, she bet on herself again and applied for and was appointed Anne Arundel County Executive in 2013. She is now running for that office in the general election. As County Executive, her passion for libraries has come full circle, as Neuman has given the Anne Arundel County Public Library a long sought for boost in funding that has enabled the system to expand hours and begin the process of modernizing facilities. Ultimately, Neuman says she will put pen to paper and write her own story, a book that, fittingly, may someday grace the shelves of the very libraries she has frequented. “Everywhere I go, people tell me I should write a book about my life. You never know, I just might do it.” And what will the moral of the story be? “It’s simple: If I can find success, anyone can,” Neuman said. And the happiest ending that Neuman can envision is one where a child, much like her former self, could find the hope and inspiration to pursue his or her own success. You can reach Laura Neuman at
