The Archdiocese of Chicago’s strategic plans included a year for youth and young adults, a year of the Mass and Faith; and now we begin a year of strong Catholic parents. Today’s bulletin has the first two articles and each week look for a new thought to help build our families.

Thoughts for reflection. . . Many things can be upsetting and one can easily get off the track. Remember that God is near us all the time, ready to help if we call on Him. One cannot forever stand against God’s will, nor can one forever upset God’s plan for one’s life, even though God’s plan may be postponed by one’s willfulness and deliberate choice of evil. A whole world of men and women cannot permanently change God’s laws or His purpose for the universe. The sea of life may look very rough to us, but we can believe that our Lord through His grace steers the boat on a straight course. -Anonymous Let nothing disturb you. Let nothing frighten you. All things pass. God does not change. Patience achieves everything. Whoever has God lacks nothing. God alone suffices. –St.Theresa of Avila. Religious Liberty is being redefined in America, or at least many would like it to be. Our secular establishment wants to reduce the autonomy of religious institutions and limit the influence of faith in the public square. The reason is not hard to grasp. In America “religion” largely means Christianity, and today our secular culture views orthodox Christian churches as troublesome, retrograde and reactionary forces. They’re seen as anti-science, anti-gay, and anti-women – which is to say anti-progress. Not surprisingly, then, the Left believes society will be best served if Christians are limited in their influence on public life. And in the short run this view is likely to succeed. There will be many arguments urging Christians to keep their religion strictly religious rather than “political.” And there won’t just be arguments; there will be laws as well. We’re in the midst of climate change – one that’s getting colder and colder toward religion. There is a deep argument that must be made in defense of religion: It is the most secure guarantee of freedom. America’s Founders, some of them Christian and others not, agreed as a matter of principle that the law of God trumps the law of men. This has obvious political implications: The Declaration of Independence appeals to the unalienable rights given by our Creator that cannot be overridden or taken away. In this sense, religion is especially beneficial. As Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI both emphasized, it gives transcendent substance to the rights of man that limit government. Put somewhat differently, religion gives us a place to stand outside politics, and without it we’re vulnerable to a system in which the state defines everything, which is the essence of tyranny. -excerpts from R. Reno editor of First Things, a journal of religion in public life Question for today: What did the first Christians have that allowed them to plant the seeds of faith in a hostile pagan culture? What did believers have that did not allow Hitler’s Third Reich to last its projected one thousand years? Religious faith has proven itself most powerful and enduring force in human history. However, they did not remain passively silent. Thank you for all the prayers for my eye procedure. God’s blessings to you always – Fr. Z wyrazami szacunku Dyrekcja i Komitet Rodzicielski Polskiej Szko³y im. Gen. W³. Andersa - Wanda Penar i Andrzej Lewczuk

From Francis Cardinal George O.M.I. June 30, 2013 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am writing this note to thank those who have contributed to the public debate on genderless marriage by speaking clearly to the fact that men and women are not interchangeable. I recognized that biological and cultural fact when I addressed this note to “brothers and sisters,” instead of assuming that “brothers” covers the entire human race. This obvious fact was forgotten or ignored by the Supreme Court last week. Civil law doesn’t change biological fact, however, and everyone knows that fathers and mothers are not interchangeable in the begetting and raising of children. “Same-sex marriage” is a contradiction in terms. Someday everybody will recognize that again. In the meantime, we must respect individuals, no matter their sexual orientation, and we must work to protect the authentic meaning of marriage in law. God bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Kiedyś wszyscy znowu to zrozumieją. Tymczasem musimy traktować z szacunkiem każdą osobę bez względu na jej orientację seksualną. Musimy też pracować nad obroną autentycznego znaczenia małżeństwa w prawie. Niech Wam Bóg błogosławi. Szczerze oddany w Chrystusie, Francis Kardynał George, O.M.I. Arcybiskup Chicago Regarding the canonization of Blessed Popes John XXIII and John Paul II By Francis Cardinal George O.M.I. July 5, 2013 The canonization of blessed Popes John XXIII and John Paul II will be a joyful moment. The history of the Church is the story of holiness. It is a centuries long saga of disciples growing ever closer to the Lord. Both Popes now join the great chorus of those recognized publicly as friends of the Lord, witnesses to the transforming power of God’s grace active in human lives. This canonization will encourage everyone to stay on the path of discipleship. A note from our new Business Manager

During the month of June we had the traditional Corpus Christi outdoor procession (left). And the 25th Anniversary of Fr. Artur’s ordination to the priesthood!

I am pleased to begin the ministry of Business Manager here at St. Thecla and look forward to helping you with the stewardship of the physical, financial and personnel resources of the parish. I grew up in Elmwood Park and my parish was St. Vincent Ferrer in River Forest where I attended CCD and played youth football. After completion of college at DePaul University I married my lovely wife Karen and we have been together for 17 years. We live in Mt. Prospect and attend St. Raymond de Penafort parish. My work history includes a 10 year stint with First National Bank of Chicago (now Chase), 12 years with The Catholic Church Extension Society as Accounting Manager and Controller and just over a year with the Pastoral Center downtown in the Parish Operations Accounting department. I feel my life has been leading up to this opportunity and I am grateful to follow Joan Czerlanis who has been an outstanding steward for the parish. Thanks to everyone for welcoming me with open arms and I look forward to serving here. Sincerely, Joe Wojtowicz 5

Building our Parish . . . . OVER 250 PAVER BRICKS WERE SOLD! THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT PURCHASED BRICKS AND MADE OUR BRICK PAVER PROJECT A GREAT SUCCESS! St. Thecla’s new brick paver walkway will be installed this summer! We will be letting everyone know when to expect our grand unveiling. We are very thankful to all the families and individuals that have purchased a brick(s). We want to offer our sincerest appreciation to the following families that have purchased a brick and paved the way to the bright future for St. Thecla Parish!

THE CURSILLO IS COMING!!! IS GOD CALLING YOU AS SAMUEL WAS CALLED? Do you feel an emptiness, a void or a longing to feel closer to God? Are you like so many of us who attend church, say prayers and have great intentions to someday really getting to know Jesus? Five million folks, including myself, have done something about it. It all starts with a Catholic movement called Cursillo, which means “Short Course in Christianity.” Cursillo begins with a dynamic three-day weekend, separate for men and women. During the weekend, you will hear and participate in a series of presentations from ordinary folks who were where you are today. These ordinary folks have learned to succeed in improving their relationship with the Lord. What is unique about the weekend is that you are given tools to help you to continue to improve and maintain your relationship with the Lord and your community in Christ for the rest of your life. Since the first Cursillo weekend in the 1940’s, the Cursillo movement has spread across the world and is now present in 60 countries with some 5 million Catholics having experienced the three days. Most of those who have attended ask themselves why they waited so long. If you have taken the time to read this message, God may already be calling you by name to the Cursillo. Please contact the contacts listed below who have attended a Cursillo for more information and find out if the Cursillo is for you. Check the Cursillo website @ www.chicagocursillo.org John Gregorio (773) 213-7375
