Keynote Speakers Thursday, June 21, 2012 9:00 am to 10 am Janice Harris Lord "Spiritual Sensitivity in Child Grief Support" Spiritual Sensitivity is important when working with children who are victims of traumatic grief. Religious and cultural beliefs have a direct impact on how a child and their family deal with the traumatic death of a loved one. About the presenter: Janice Harris Lord received her MSSW degree from University of Texas at Arlington and is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and professional counselor (LPC). She is a Fellow in Thanatology with the Association of Death Education and Counseling and is a member of the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies. Janice has worked in the crime victims’ movement since 1976 and was National Director of Victim Services for Mothers Against Drunk Driving for 14 years. She is a consultant for a number of crime victim organizations with special interest in caregiver resilience, trauma grief, and the role of spirituality in human services. Janice was recently elected to the Board of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The new and revised 6th edition of her book, No Time for Goodbyes: Coping with Sorrow, Anger, and Injustice After a Tragic Death, was recently released, and two new books were published in 2008: Spiritually Sensitive Caregiving: A Multi-Faith Handbook and I’ll Never Forget Those Words: A Practical Guide to Death Notification. In addition, she has published many journal articles, curricula, brochures, booklets, research reports, and other publications. Janice received the U.S. Presidential Page | 21

Award for “Outstanding Service on Behalf of Victims of Crime” from President Bill Clinton and U.S. Attorney General, Janet Reno, in 1994. Friday, June 22, 2012 9:00 am to 10 am Robert Zucker "The Parenting Challenge: Empowering Grieving Adults to Help Themselves and their Children When Grief Is Shared" When adults face a significant loss, they not only must grapple with their own profound grief. They are often called upon to nurture and support their grieving children as well. This dual bereavement challenge can be daunting. To effectively support grieving children and teens we must not only teach their parents and grandparents how children grieve differently. We must also be available as mentors as they struggle to re-define their lives and the lives of their children. This address will consider specific ways to empower grieving adults to be effective parents even as they are grieving. About the Presenter: Robert Zucker is the author of The Journey Through Grief and Loss: Helping Yourself and Your Child When Grief Is Shared (St. Martin’s Press, 2009). A licensed, certified social worker and Fellow in Thanatology, he frequently travels across the country leading workshops and providing consultation for human service professionals, hospitals, hospices and schools. For over thirty years, he has provided comfort and counseling to grieving parents, teens, and children, both in his private practice and in hospice, hospital and clinic settings. He currently coordinates the bereavement program at a hospice in Massachusetts. Page | 22

Saturday, June 23, 2012 11:00 am to noon Alison Salloum, Ph.D. "Treatment for Children Experiencing Traumatic Grief" This presentation will provide an overview of the theoretical underpinnings of Grief and Trauma Intervention (GTI) for Children, a manualized treatment for children who are experiencing grief and posttraumatic stress. The interplay of grief and trauma in childhood will be discussed. GTI for Children has been tested with children experiencing posttraumatic stress due to witnessing or being a direct victim of violence (often multiple types of violence), death of a loved one (including homicide) and disasters (specifically Hurricane Katrina). Results indicate significant improvements in symptoms of posttraumatic stress, depression, and traumatic grief in children who participated in GTI. A brief review of the evidence to date on the effectiveness of GTI will be presented. About the Presenter: Alison Salloum, PhD. is an Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida, School of Social Work and has a joint appointment with the Department of Pediatrics. She received her MSW and PhD. from Tulane University School of Social Work. Dr. Salloum is a licensed clinical social worker and has extensive clinical experience providing treatment for children and families who have experienced traumatic events. Dr. Salloum’s research focuses on interventions for children and adolescents who have experienced loss and trauma. She has recently developed and tested a Grief and Trauma Intervention (GTI) for children. Dr. Salloum is the author of Group Work with Page | 23

Adolescents after Violent Death: A Manual for Practitioners (Brunner-Routledge, 2004) and Reactions: A Workbook for Children Experiencing Grief and Trauma (Centering Corporation, 1998). Dr. Salloum’s research continues to focus on effective ways to help traumatized children, adolescents and their families. She is currently the Principal Investigator of a NIMH-funded study to develop and test a stepped care trauma-focused intervention for young children after trauma.
