Objectives Learning Objectives At the conclusion of the symposium, the participants should be able to: • Identify and treat appropriately and cost effectively a majority of common outpatient infectious diseases. • Diagnose and treat more accurately common skin conditions usually seen by the PCP and that may not need referral to the dermatology specialist. • Recommend exercise interventions for the overweight child that is age-appropriate and effective. • Be familiar with the new and expanded California State Perinatal genetic screening program and its medical implications • Expand on knowledge of stem cell research and its potential future application in the field of pediatrics, specifically: diabetes and other autoimmune diseases; metabolic and subsets of genetic diseases that may be identified through expanded newborn screening programs, and other diagnostic modalities. • Grasp the potential dangers – internet sexual predators, child pornography, cyber bullying, encouragement of drug use, eating disorders and antisocial and violent behavior, to name just a few – that children may encounter while using the Internet, especially when used for social networking, instant messaging and other like applications, and be able to warn and coach parents and children as to more appropriate and less risky use of this ubiquitous and powerful informational tool. Possibly a new role for the pediatrician. • Think more consciously about the concept of imparting “hope,” that more commonly and conscientiously has been reserved for the severely ill patient, to daily pediatric practice. Target Audience Pediatricians, Family Practitioners, Dermatologists, Infectious Disease, Social Medicine and other SCPMG partners and associates. May also be of interest to nurse practitioners, physicians assistants and nurses who are involved or interested in the care and management of children and adolescents.
