The Kenneth Jamieson Lecture, Tuesday 14 October 5pm Dr Kenneth G Jamieson MS, MD, FRACS, FACS, DS (1925–1976) Kenneth Jamieson was educated at Scotch College, Melbourne and Ormond College, University of Melbourne. Graduating with Honours, he was appointed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and subsequently to the Alfred Hospital as assistant to the neurosurgeons. A research scholar at Baker Medical Research Institute at the Alfred in 1953/1954. In 1955, he was appointed as the first visiting Neurosurgeon to the Royal Brisbane Hospital (RBH). He was a brilliant diagnostician and surgeon and an outstanding teacher. Many University of Queensland graduates will recall his wonderful tutorials, usually in conjunction with Dr John Sutherland. A First Notebook of Head Injury written by Ken, became very popular and remains a classic. Under his leadership, the RBH neurosurgical unit developed a world-class reputation, with results, especially in the management of extra-dural haematoma (better than most published series). In 1965, at a general meeting of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), Ken moved that the college develop a Road Trauma Committee to address the epidemic of deaths and injuries resulting from road traffic crashes in Australia and New Zealand. RACS would establish the committee with an enormous impact in both countries e.g. supporting legislation for seat belts, lower blood alcohol levels, helmets for motor and pedal cyclists, introducing many educational initiatives in the management of the injured and promoting the development of systems of care. It was Ken Jamieson’s vision that began the process! He died suddenly at home on 28 January, 1976.

Welcome to the 23rd Annual RBWH Healthcare Symposium; a showcase of the hospital’s strength in clinical care, research and teaching. Highlights this year include sessions on dementia, innovation, research and education, leadership, and building collaborative partnerships. More than 100 people are directly participating in 2014, as presenters, committee members or as adjudicators, representing a significant contribution from hospital staff as well as our invited faculty. Each year the symposium spans the full spectrum of healthcare covering medicine, nursing and allied health professions with plenary state-of-the-art presentations and sessions relevant to all areas of the hospital including clinicians, trainees and researchers. Again in 2014 we will welcome the many delegates expected to attend from many other healthcare, research and education facilities across Queensland and from interstate.

The organisation and planning of the symposium has involved considerable time and effort on the part of a dedicated organising committee. We are most grateful to the RBWH Foundation for financial support and the continued support of the hospital executive and the health service district is very much appreciated. Again, a stellar cast of national and international speakers will join us for the 23rd Annual Healthcare Symposium. We do hope you can join us. Professor Lawrie Powell AC Director, Research, RBWH and Chair, Symposium Organising Committee

As the charity arm of Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, RBWH Foundation plays a vital role in not only raising the money needed to fund clinical research and other activities on the campus, but raising awareness for the exemplary work and achievements of the hospital’s researchers and other staff. It is therefore a great privilege to sponsor the annual RBWH Healthcare Symposium which not only showcases the important research conducted at RBWH, but the outstanding knowledge and expertise of our healthcare professionals.

A message from the RBWH Foundation Chair

We have countless internationally-recognised medical professionals at the hospital who are committed to making a difference, particularly through research. Making the fundamental discoveries that lead to medical breakthroughs can be a long and costly endeavour with many unforeseen impediments, commonly caused by the unpredictable nature of research funding. We are incredibly grateful to our many donors and supporters whose financial contributions to RBWH Foundation have made the funding of many of these research projects possible. Like our doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals they are champions of a brighter future for our patients and society as a whole. Hamish Doley Acting Chair, RBWH Foundation
