• Cold insulation and refrigeration • Noise insulation • HVAC insulation • Cladding of pipework and ducting • Measurement and delivery of thermal blankets • Prefabrication of encapsulation and special solutions • Insulation and furnishing of containers Heat conservation Heat insulation of industrial facilities demands optimal solutions. Precise temperature control is critical for a steady, economic process onshore as well as off. As an accredited partner to engineering consultants, technical personnel and customers, KAEFER ENERGY is well qualified for the development of suitable insulation systems. Insulation standards vary with the type of facility, applicable regulations and technical specifications. Projects therefore need individual engineering to deliver the most optimal solutions. Fire-proof insulation Fire and smoke can cause serious damage to offshore installations besides the obvious risk to personnel on board, which in extreme cases can have fatal consequences. Potential incidents can be mitigated by the use of suitable insulation measures. KAEFER ENERGY delivers fire-proofing systems in conjunction with passive fire resistance for steel structures,

buildings, penetrations, ducting and cabling, etc. KAEFER ENERGY is a certified applicator of the most popular spray-on agents used in fire-protection. With this experience we have completed a number of successful fire-proofing projects. Cold conservation Cold conservation demands reliable protection from water and air absorption. To be assured that the insulation is suitable, a thorough understanding of materials is essential. The most popular insulation layers are: cellular glass, cellular rubber (FEF) and polyurethane foam products (PIR/ PUR). Cold conservation is a normal process for reefer installations and freezer cabinets, and in facilities for processing of oil and gas at very low temperatures. Noise insulation Noise generated by machinery and industrial plant often exceeds acceptable thresholds. Soundabatement measures must therefore be taken to protect man and the environment. Know-how about noise insulators, combined with careful and precise noise measurements and analyses, are key to achieving the optimal results. KAEFER ENERGY can deliver the prerequisite engineering services plus the silencing products that help our customers resolve noise issues.

PTFE Coating – for long life operation

KAEFER ENERGY has long and comprehensive experience in the field of surface protection. KAEFER ENERGY has extended the services by a thin film facility (primarily PTFE) in Verdal, MidNorway. Here everything from parts, piping and equipment for subsea completions are protected by thin film coating, which has a long life and is resistant to chemicals and high/low temperatures. The need for such protection will increase in the years ahead, as the number of subsea development increases. Durable coating, versatile use within the offshore industry PTFE coating is often referred to as Xylan or molybdenum coating. Xylan is a type of PTFE, some also know it as Teflon. The material has a long life as well as qualities such as low friction and resistance to corrosion, acids and bases, alcohols, ketones, petrol and oils. Applying a thin coat is a comprehensive process. Often the objects are blast cleaned after a thorough wash, before they are dipped into zinc phosphate. Following a hardening

and drying process the PTFE coating is applied and cured. A PTFE coat can withstand temperatures ranging from plus 260 degrees Celsius to minus 200 degrees Celsius.

Advantages of PTFE coating • Environmental and health benefits • Flexible coating – tolerates movement • Can be applied to all types of surfaces • Temperature tolerant (-200 to + 260 degrees Celsius)

• • • • • • • •

Low friction which “lubricates” the surfaces Good corrosive protection – especially in a submerged state Inert coating – high resistance to all known chemicals Reduced maintenance costs Anti-fouling qualities under water subsea Coating thickness down to 20 micron, including phosphate layer Extremely good adhesion properties Good UV protection

Area of application • As friction coating, corrosion protection and/or anti-fouling coating of subsea components • High-tech industry, motors and generators • Inside tanks and pipes against corrosive chemicals or against galvanic corrosion • As lubricant/friction coating were metal surfaces are in contact with each other • Flanges and bolts Facility with high capacity The facility is located in a new

16

workshop in Verdal next to KAEFER ENERGY’s existing surface protection hall. Consequently KAEFER ENERGY is able to offer a complete range of surface protection and insulation. The facility can handle individual objects of sizes up to 8 x 2,5 x 2,5 meters and weight up to 8 tonnes. The hardening furnace can operate in temperatures up to 250 degrees Celsius. The facility also contains a varnishing box, washing chamber, zinc phosphate vat, a dedicated room for chemical cleaning, pickling (sizes 5,5 x 5 x 9 meters) and an area for blast cleaning.

All liquids used at the facility are collected in a tank, cleaned in an evaporator and reused in the process. The facility will not release any emissions to the environment and will re-circulate the waste products. Eighty percent of the total energy requirements for the production process will come from district heating plants. The facility is designed and equipped with a view to minimal manual handling, which allows for a simpler and more ergonomic handling of objects and thus being less strenuous for individual operators.

Health and environmental benefits As in KAEFER ENERGY’s other businesses, HSE is a priority area.

An element in this work is the continuing high investment in testing of new products. Explosion and jet fire tests are a major component here, in addition to acoustic and thermal performance. Development and refinement of methods and means is another

Offshore equipment often creates noise during operation. The noise can create an unpleasant working environment, and even be hazardous to employee’s health. In a risk zone, noise levels can be so high that the amount of time workers can spend in the area must be restricted. These restrictions and the risk to employee’s health can greatly be reduced with sound insulation from KAEFER ENERGY.

key focus area in the company. Noise, heat and vibration are among the greatest contributors to damage, injury, ill-health and accidents in the process industry and our special disciplines are among the professions most at risk. KAEFER ENERGY has performed a number of studies focusing on the stresses and strains of our operatives,

as a result of which noise, vibration and heat issues have high priority in the company. KAEFER ENERGY also utilises market-leading software to analyse and visualise problem areas. Evaluation of energy loss and visualisation of alternative insulation solutions are other important customer services we are keen to offer. Fire protection

Energy Turnbed

On offshore installations, the risk of fire poses a serious threat. Effective fire protection measures are therefore an essential part of all offshore facilities. KAEFER ENERGY is experts in passive fire protection. Our fire protection products from the ENERGY series increase the durability of pipes, valves and load-bearing structures in the event of fire. This extends system functionality, giving personnel valuable time to bring the situation under control, or to evacuate the facility if necessary.

ENERGY Turnbed provides all the facilities that a good night’s sleep requires, resulting in comfortable and undisturbed rest.

On an offshore installation, particular attention is given to four categories of fire. Class A fires occur when solid organic materials ignite. This type of fire commonly spreads from room to room and between floors, and poses a risk to technical rooms and living quarters. In process areas, there is a risk of explosions due to the presence of hydrocarbons and gas under pressure. The damage caused by an explosion may lead to gas leaks, which in turn may result in a jet fire. A jet fire is the burning of a continuous flow of gas or fuel. Hydrocarbon or Pool fires start when the gases from a pool of fuel ignite. This type of fire can occur when leaked oil catches fire. Research/Testing KAEFER ENERGY’s fire protection products reduce the risks associated

30

with each of these fire types. Our development department undertakes extensive testing, and our ENERGY series products are tested and certified in accordance with authority requirements. We also offer the pre-fabrication of materials at our workshop, which saves valuable time during the installation process. Product range Process area can be protected using products from the ENERGY Series. KAEFER ENERGYs fire protection engineers design a tailor-made, cost effective solution that will provide optimum safety. The solution is then implemented using the following elements: • Bulkhead and deck insulation effectively prevents fires from moving between areas. • Passive fire protection is an excellent alternative to bulkhead and deck insulation for use in

• • • •

technical areas, or those that are difficult to access. Floating floors. Pipe penetrations. Pipe insulation Fire boxes

ENERGY Fireboxes Our custom fireboxes are tailor-made to your measurements. They are explosion tested up to 1,8 barge and fire tested to meet most stringent requirements, even 350 kW/m2 Jetfire. They are easy to disassemble for maintenance purposes, and supplied from our prefabrication workshop with short lead times. In combination, these elements provide comprehensive fire protection in accordance with authority requirements. With fire protection solutions from KAEFER ENERGY employees can work with confidence, safe in the knowledge that they are protected.

This is a simple and inexpensive solution for increasing the number of beds, making it the best choice in all environments associated with shift work. ENERGY Turnbed enable workplaces to operate with more staff without sacrificing comfort. As each bed is in fact two beds, staff will not have to deal with the issue of hotbedding, i.e. sharing the same bed. Areas of use for ENERGY Turnbed: rigs, platforms, ships, barracks, guard rooms. • • •

shift hours 1 day side and 1 night side no climbing ladders at end of a long working day

During the development and manufacturing process, KAEFER ENERGY has focused on functionality as well as comfort, resulting in a bed that is easy to use – a simple construction without complicated parts. The structure is very robust and requires low maintenance. For ergonomic purposes, the bed sits higher from the ground, thus making all aspects of handling easier.

Training

Training and career path KAEFER ENERGY’s success as a company depends on the quality of the work we perform for our customers and the long-standing commitment to safety and cost-effective delivery. This depends on our personnel being qualified and motivated. KAEFER ENERGY offers a secure and exciting place to work in a constantly growing market, where improving skill sets and the opportunity for personal development are key factors. Training centre KAEFER ENERGY maintains an in-house training centre with a wealth of facilities. It is heavily used in connection with projects, for special courses for engineers, for HSE courses, and not least for training of apprentices and other hopeful young professionals taking a trade certificate. It also provides a coordination room where external project teams can come together and a venue for meetings with distant offices. Training and development programs KAEFER ENERGY offers a range of training programs for personnel. Practical and financial support is available for candidates taking the programs. Certification of personnel always complies with the NORSOK standards. Trainee programs and apprenticeships KAEFER ENERGY is a certified training enterprise within the Insulation, Scaffold and Surface protection

32

industry. Recruiting of trainees in our disciplines is a vital focus area in KAEFER ENERGY. Trainees are a key component of our future skilled workforce, and many of our highly skilled professionals started out as trainees. The trainee scheme means we can have a positive influence on hopeful young tradesmen to acquire specialist expertise for the future. We work hard to motivate trainees to enjoy their profession, as we know that satisfaction and motivation add up to skilled practitioner who will choose to stay with us after qualifying. We are involved in projects onshore and offshore and at various facilities around Norway, where trainees can try out different projects and assignments, making it possible to refine technical skills. Thanks to careful mentoring during training, our apprentices are well equipped to meet the challenges and assignments they will be handed once certified. In KAEFER ENERGY it is also possible for trainees to take the obligatory Basic Safety and Emergency Course for offshore contracts. Adult trainees over 21 Trainees over 21 years of age may sign an apprenticeship even without the statutory schooling required in the typical career path. Mature trainees commence with a 6-month probation period in the company. For most disciplines the apprenticeship lasts for 4 years. Certain credits are applicable, and theory gaps must be filled during

the period. All candidates must pass the theory test before the trade certificate/ journeyman certificate can be attempted. Trainees with a certificate in some other trade may sign an apprenticeship in a new trade by passing the appropriate tradesman/ journeyman exam. Here too, credits may permit a reduction in study time. Trade certification KAEFER ENERGY recognises how important it is that personnel are both trained and qualified in the disciplines that make up Insulation, Scaffolding, Surface protection. Even though we already lead the field in the proportion of operatives with trade certificates, we urge all employees who have not yet qualified for a trade to take up the offer. After two years as an apprentice (3 years for insulators), or five years in the trade doing relevant practice, candidates can take the theory exam and practical test. KAEFER ENERGY is keen to help candidates who wish to pursue this path. Our Competence and Careers Division will assist with enrolment for the examinations and tests. Candidates are also offered a review of the theory before sitting the exam. Practicals are taken in KAEFER ENERGY’s workshops and we also offer financial support. Multiple expertise KAEFER ENERGY is keen to offer multiple skill sets for personnel. Employees are welcome to attend courses

in disciplines other than their key qualification. Such personnel are therefore well-equipped to perform tasks outside and across their core areas. Typical examples of multiple skill sets are our Scaffold Builder Course under Section 46C, for personnel involved in surface protection and coatings, insulation and interior outfitting. Another is the UHT Course for scaffolders, insulators and interior outfitters. A third is our Insulation Course for coating technicians and scaffold-builders. • Multiple skill sets mean greater flexibility for the company and the employee, and mean greater job security for these multi qualified personnel. • As a company we are more

attractive to potential clients as we can offer personnel with a range of skill sets. Equally, multiple skills mean greater work satisfaction and a broader understanding of the roles of the other trades involved in a multidiscipline project.
