As you have heard over the last three weeks, the Annual Diocesan Appeal (ADA) is the number one fundraiser for St. John Vianney. This year’s ADA theme, “Proclaiming God’s Love, Together in Christ”, reminds us that all of our gifts come from God and that together, as a congregation of faith, we contribute our time, talent and treasure to build a stronger community. We have great news to share about the results of the first two weeks of the ADA 2017 campaign. 203 parishioners pledged approximately $81,951 achieving 54% of our parish goal of $152,000. This is a fantastic start to our campaign and we would like to thank you for your generosity. We understand that some families did not receive their ADA envelopes in the mail. If you did not receive, please stop by the parish office or church to pick up pledge forms. Lenten Regulations Prayer and Works of Charity During Lent, Catholics participate more often in the Eucharist not only on Sunday but also on traditionally penitential days, such as Friday. We also celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and other liturgies, such as Evening Prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. To deepen our prayer life, we participate in other devotions and works of service, including Stations of the Cross, daily prayer, Scripture reading, spiritual reading, alms-giving, self-denial, forgiveness of others, and increased care for those in need. Especially in this Year of Mercy, we more fully engage in the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Fasting and Abstinence We practice the traditional penitential discipline of fasting by denying or limiting ourselves of food. During Lent, Catholics age 18 or older, until the beginning of their 60th year, are obligated to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means eating only one full meatless meal per day. One may also eat two other meatless meals that are sufficient to maintain strength but together do not equal a full meal. One may also drink liquids, including milk and fruit juice, between meals. If your health or ability to work is affected, you are not obligated to fast. If possible, fast on other days of Lent as well. We practice abstinence from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. On these days, from the day after one’s 14th birthday, all Catholics are bound by Church law to abstain from meat. For children younger than 14, pastors and parents should form them to have an authentic sense of penance, conversion, and reconciliation. Easter Duty and Holy Communion All the faithful, after they have participated in First Communion, are obligated to share in Communion at least once a year. This law must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year. Tres cosas sencillas para cumplir nuestro deber de cristianos durante este tiempo de Cuaresma. Oración. Trate de encontrar un lugar quieto, un espacio privado, donde pueda estar solo con sus pensamientos y con Dios. Este puede ser cuando camina haciendo su ejercicio, cuando esta lavando la ropa, cuando está trabajando o cuando está cocinando para su familia, por ultimo cuando ya los niños se han dormido. Antes – después de ver la telenovela. Al tomar este tiempo no quiere decir que seamos egoístas sino que debemos de nutrir nuestra jornada de fe y tener una solida relación con Dios. Para lograr esto, podemos meditar en el Evangelio de. (Lucas 11, 1:13 y Mateo 6,9:15) El ayuno. Pensemos en lo que comemos y bebemos, y el porqué lo hacemos. Tratemos de comer saludable. Y si hay una forma de hacer una pausa y dejar de comer nuestras comidas favoritas no dudemos en hacerlo pensando en tantas personas que no tienen nada para comer ni vestir. También consideremos ayunar de lo siguiente. Criticarnos unos a otros en la familia, entre amigos y compañeros de trabajo, de nuestra impaciencia, e inflexibilidad para con los que amamos. Esto ayudara a nuestro crecimiento espiritual y a sanar nuestro cuerpo de tanta impureza que almacenamos en el cuerpo y en el corazón. Para esto meditemos en el Evangelio de. (Mateo 15, 10:19 y Mateo 6,16:18) La Caridad. Pidámosle al Señor en esta Cuaresma que nos dé un espíritu generoso, que compartamos lo que tenemos con aquellos que menos tienen. Hagámoslo con frecuencia. Notemos que los actos de compasión y justicia bendicen a ambos al que da y al que recibe. Demos lo que le corresponde al Señor en nuestra parroquia es decir nuestra colecta dominical y la ayuda del diezmo anual para satisfacer necesidades de muchos hermanos y hermanas nuestras que tienen menos que nosotros y para que la Iglesia siga llevando la Palabra de Dios a tantas personas que la están esperando. The story of the United States is a tale of welcome and of new hope. Whether for those from Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, or the Americas, this nation has been a brightburning beacon and an invitation to a better life in which the gifts of God can be widely shared. Today is no different. Writing in response to recent developments, Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of Austin, Texas, and Chair of the U.S. Bishops' Committee on Migration stated: "We respect the rule of law and the American judicial process. We remain steadfast in our commitment to resettling refugees and all those fleeing persecution. At this time, we remain particularly dedicated to ensuring that affected refugee and immigrant families are not separated and that they continue to be welcomed to our country. We will continue to welcome the newcomer as it is a vital part of our Catholic faith and an enduring element of our American values and tradition." "They don't worry where their next meal is coming from. They don't store up grain in barns. And yet, the Heavenly Father takes care of them. Surely you are worth more to him than a bird." "And why worry about your clothing?" Jesus continued. "Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, and yet Solomon in all his glory wasn't dressed as beautifully as they are. If God cares so wonderfully for these wildflowers, surely he will take care of you. Next week, March 5, is the First Sunday of Lent. In the spirit of this special time of year as we prepare for Easter, together as a parish community we are going to take 2 - 3 minutes at each Mass following the priest’s homily to spend in quiet guided prayer. Our INTENTION in doing this is to grow in our own practice of personal prayer. Our FOCUS will be on a growing awareness of how God loves us and speaks to us in the words of Scripture, the Holy Bible. We will do this every Sunday during Lent. Our HOPE is that this practice will grow and lead us closer to God.
