What is a pallet label?

A pallet label contains an SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) or Licence Plate which is unique to each individual pallet. You wouldn’t drive a car without licence plates on the front and back - Woolworths wants to drive pallets more efficiently through our joint supply chain by using industry standard pallet labels on the front and back containing the unique SSCC number and other information about the contents of the pallet. ©Woolworths Limited 2015. No reproduction, disclosure or other use of this without Woolworths Limited's written licence is permitted.

The Serial Shipping Container Code, or SSCC, is one part of the Woolworths pallet label. It is designed to track product distribution from the manufacturer to the retailer. If the pallet height does not permit the pallet labels to be at least 400mm from the ground, then the pallet labels should be placed as high as possible on the right hand side on each of the fork entry sides of the pallet. If the pallet does not need to be stretch wrapped for stability, the pallet labels must be applied on the cartons. If the pallet needs to be stretch wrapped for stability, the pallet labels must be applied to the outside of the stretch wrap as shown below. One pallet label is required on each of the fork entry sides of the pallet, a total of two pallet labels per pallet.

Pallet Label – Position on Pallet Pallet Labels – Part Pallet Single Line Item •

Where there is only one layer high of the trade unit on a pallet and the trade unit height is less than the height of the pallet labels. Please ensure that the bar codes of the labels are on the vertical face of the trade unit with the human readable portion of the labels folded over onto the horizontal surface of the trade unit. Pallet labels must be on the fork entry sides of the pallet on the right hand side, therefore, two pallet labels are required, eg. one pallet label on each of the fork entry sides of the pallet. If the individual pallet needs to be stretch wrapped for stability, the pallet labels must be applied on the outside of the stretch wrap on the right hand side of the pallet. If the pallet is not stretch wrapped, the pallet labels are to be placed on the cartons on the right hand side of the pallet and, where possible, should not bridge across two cartons. The top half of the label is to be folded over onto the horizontal surface of the trade unit.

A pallet label in “landscape” format is also permissible and may fit onto the vertical surface of small trade units.

The remainder of the cartons should be grouped together behind the corresponding carton with the pallet label. Then the pallet is to be stretch wrapped. Note: Mixed pallets are only for products on the same Purchase Order. Pallet labels on these cartons facing the rear fork entry side of the pallet

Dispatch Notes, Address Notes, Miscellaneous Notes, etc. on Pallets

Loose pieces of paper that are inserted under the stretch wrap of pallets are causing issues in our DC infrastructure. This example of an adhesive label removes the issue of excess paper falling on the floor of our DC’s. The adhesive label must be applied to the outside of the stretch wrap. Paper can also be taped to the outside of the stretch wrap as long as all 4 sides of the paper are affixed to the wrap securely. The method of either an adhesive label or securely taped paper is preferred. There is no requirement on the size or information on this label as long as it does not cover your pallet label ©Woolworths Limited 2015. Dispatch Notes, Address Notes, Miscellaneous Notes, etc. on Pallets

These examples of labels that are not secured by tape or glue will fall to the floor once the stretch wrap is removed, increasing our management of waste and may become a hazard. This application method is not acceptable.

Pallet Label – Duplication Issue •

Duplications occur when: – The pallet label on the front of the pallet has a different SSCC number to the pallet label on the back of the same pallet. Both labels must be identical, just like the licence plates on the front and back of a car. – Your software does NOT produce unique SSCC labels for each pallet (2 labels each), therefore, more than 1 or all pallets have the same SSCC number. – Your software produces unique SSCC numbers correctly, but the labels are being mixed up during application and, therefore, one pallet has a different SSCC label on the front of the pallet to the SSCC label on the back of the same pallet.

Scenario #1 - SOFTWARE ISSUE SYSTEM NOT PRODUCING SEQUENTIALLY NUMBERED SSCC LABELS •

Incorrect Process – The same SSCC number is being produced for all pallet labels.

Correct Process – For Pallet Number 1 - The software should produce 2 pallet labels with the same SSCC number eg. 1234 and should both be applied to each fork entry side of Pallet Number 1. – For Pallet Number 2 - The software should produce 2 pallet labels with the same SSCC number eg. 1235 and should both be applied to each fork entry side of Pallet Number 2.

21 of 35

Pallet Label – Duplication Issue Scenario #2 - SYSTEM CRASHES WHILE PRODUCING SSCC LABELS • Incorrect Process –If your system crashes it must not reset itself to a default start position, as the SSCC numbers produced must be unique for a minimum 12 months. If it does reset to a default position then it will re use numbers that you have already issued on previous deliveries therefore causing duplications within our DC operations.

• Correct Process – Any restart should continue with the next number in sequence. Scenario # 3 - SSCC LABELS BEING MIXED UP IN APPLICATION ON PALLETS • Incorrect Process –Pallet labels are produced, for example, 2 pallets - Your system produces two sets of labels with two unique SSCC numbers; SSCC 1234 for pallet 1 & SSCC 5678 for pallet 2. –In Application - SSCC No. 1234 is put on the front of pallet 1 & SSCC No.5678 is put on the back of pallet 1. The second SSCC label 5678 is put on the front side of pallet 2 & the second SSCC label 1234 is put on the back of pallet 2.

• Correct Process –Your application methods need to ensures that the same SSCC label is applied to the front and back of the same pallet on the fork entry sides. ©Woolworths Limited 2015. No reproduction, disclosure or other use of this without Woolworths Limited's written licence is permitted.

Way Forward: •Pallet label Barcode Verification should be obtained prior to pallet labels being delivered to a Woolworths’ DC. •Woolworths can assist by providing further information once the verification report has been received, including correct placement on pallet and human readable label content. •Using industry standard pallet labels are a way for Woolworths and trading partners to work together to lower end-to-end supply chain costs. •Pallet labels conforming to Woolworths and the verification report specifications are required now for all pallets delivered to a Woolworths DC, or a Woolworths Americold, Swires DC for Temperature Controlled products. Non–conformances will be recorded and managed. ©Woolworths Limited 2015. No reproduction, disclosure or other use of this without Woolworths Limited's written licence is permitted.
