Wellbeing Health and More Festival 2015 - WHAM The Annual WHAM festival for 2015 was on Friday the 11th September. This year’s learning goal was to discover how music, dance and art can enhance resilience. Students put together displays and activities to represent their knowledge and showcase it at the festival. The theme was “The RHYTHM of LIFE” and to enrich this there was a range of performances on two stages including school bands, external bands, our very own Dance Troupe and many other acts. There were also a number of art activities including a moveable graffiti wall, footpath art and therapeutic colouring-in. They aimed to model that sharing music, art and dance with others can cultivate positive relationships, belonging and a strong sense of community which we recognise as attributes of resilience. The school also worked with agencies and organisations to engage students in knowledge and access to health and wellbeing across our local community. Community agencies and support attending the festival included ADF, Crocs, CYMHS, Daniel Morecombe Foundation, Deeragun Dentist, Deeragun Super Clinic, Environmental Health, Headspace, Katrina's Hair and Beauty, Mental Health Fellowship, Northside Presbyterian Church Outreach, NQ Cheerleaders, Nth Townsville Community Hub, Oceanic Health and Fitness, Oral Health, PCYC, QAS, QYS, Relationships Australia, Sexual Health, Uniting Care Community, Ultimate Results Fitness, Women's Centre, Youth Network and YWAM.

Firstly I would like to say a very big thank you to Mrs Natalie Taylor who acted Principal in my place all of last term while I was on long service leave. She has done an outstanding job along with the rest of the leadership team and staff to drive home our very explicit improvement agenda. We are seeing improvement across the board in our junior classrooms. There is no doubt improving literacy and numeracy is gaining momentum and our students are embracing the explicit teaching in this area. Like all change, success is not instant and it will take time to see significant gains and embedded practices. The weeks are quickly passing us by and before we know it our year 12 students will be doing their final exams and calling full time on their high school education. I would like to remind our year 12 students and their parents that these final weeks are just as important as the first weeks of school and senior education. They must keep their “eye on the finish line” –      

attend every day and every lesson, be on time all of the time, do their very best in every lesson, complete class work and assessment to the best of their ability and on time, maintain the exemplary behaviour we expect of them, And savour these final special moments before stepping into the world beyond our gates.

Learning never exhausts the mind. Leonardo da Vinci

SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS During the last week of term three, a group of iXL and Senior Students were invited to attend the annual event, Shakespeare Under The Stars, in Queens Garden. This year, TheartreiNQ put on the hilarious Shakespearean comedy, The Twelfth Night (OR WHAT YOU WILL) in celebration of their 20th season performing for Townsville audiences. The play is a romantic comedy, involving an array of deceit, trickery and betrayal, resulting in a convoluted plan to ‘get the girl’. This adaptation incorporated a wide variety of contemporary television and musical references to amuse and engage the audience. And it worked! The audience was in stitches throughout the play, particularly entertained by the drunken, uncoordinated trio of Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Fabian. It is safe to say the students and staff enjoyed the play immensely!

Dive Trip This year two keen staff members at Northern Beaches SHS organised our first open water dive trip in conjunction with Remote Area Dive. We had 10 students and 2 staff undertake two days of training before embarking on a memorable overnight trip to camp on Pelorus Island and dive the surrounding waters. The first day of training was classroom based and we were taught all the theory. The second training day introduced us to the fundamental scuba diving skills and equipment in a pool. This prepared us for the open water diving and after a couple of sleepless nights in anticipation, we departed the school early Saturday morning heading for Lucinda where we would meet up with the dive boat and head across the choppy waters to Pelorus Island. Over the course of the two days, we performed 4 open water dives in the waters surrounding Pelorus and Orpheus Island diving to a maximum depth of 17m. The underwater visibility varied from amazing to ‘was that a fish, hmm, not really sure, probably just coral, yep coral,’ but that didn’t restrict us from admiring the amazing reef displays underwater. Remote Area Dive organised all our food and our accommodation which had the best water front views that I have seen. At the completion of the trip we were exhausted, but keen to continue our underwater adventures next year. This trip is planned to be a regular part of the school calendar in the years to follow. Mr Gillett and Mr Behrendorff are already taking names down of students from yr10-12 for the next trip. At the completion of the course, students receive their open water dive certificate which will also give them 1 point towards their QCE, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Defence News Welcome Back to Term 4 2015

Term 4 is often a stressful term for students but this can be particularly stressful if you know that you are moving at the end of the year. We have a number of students at NBSHS who are in this situation. They are moving to various parts of Australia or overseas with parents who have been posted out by the ADF. Over the coming term the DTM’s will be offering extra support to these students and organising farewell parties for them and their friends. If you are posting out please let us know so we can ensure your child does not miss out.

Nominations for the 2016 Premier’s Anzac Prize opened on the 10th September. The prize gives Queensland secondary school students the opportunity to travel to Gallipoli and the Western Front battlefields to learn about the Anzac tradition first hand. In this, it encourages young Queenslanders to better understand the Anzac legacy and share their knowledge with others. For more information go to http://education.qld.gov.au/students/grants/scholarships/anz ac/index.html

Lunchtime Basketball with Russell Hinder—Ex Captain of the Crocodiles. We are very privileged to have Rusty Hinder coming into the school every Tuesday at lunchtime to run a basketball clinic for any interested students. Rusty comes to us with a wealth of experience and I am sure the students will learn a lot from him.

Adopt a Soldier Project This term we will be working with interested students to put together care packages for ADF personnel who are currently deployed. This is a great way for our students to gain some understanding into the sacrifices ADF personnel and their families make. The aim is to try have these sent in time for Christmas and to make a small difference in these people’s lives. If your child is interested in participating in this project please ask them to see Carolyn or Bree at the administration block during break times.

ADF Spouse PT sessions recommenced Tue 6 Oct 15 0930 h @Lavarack gym. No need to book just turn up

The benefits of having breakfast Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!

Eating breakfast everyday improves our concentration and academic performance, gives us energy and better coordination, and helps us to maintain a healthy weight.

There are many other important benefits of having Breakfast at home or at school. The Breakfast Club program is offered Monday to Thursday mornings before school. The menu includes nutritious foods: toast, spreads, ham and cheese toasties, spaghetti toasties, milk and milo drinks. It is an opportunity to catch up with friends and meet new people

A great start to the day
