The Feast of Christ the King E

A Call to Liturgical Ministry

ach Sunday, we assemble in the name of Jesus, to worship through the power of the Spirit. At this assembly, each of us hears and responds to the Word of God and the celebration of Eucharist in words, songs, gestures and prayerful silence. We are then challenged to go forth to share the richness of this celebration with others. Our is the central and most important ministry - the work of the celebrating assembly. . MINISTERS OF THE WORD Lectors who proclaim the Sacred Scripture MINISTERS OF THE EUCHARIST Eucharistic Minsters who assist in distribution of Communion (also Homebound, Nursing Home and Hospital Ministers) MINISTERS OF MUSIC Songleaders, musicians, choristers, children’s choir, instrumentalists MINISTERS OF HOSPITALITY Greeters and ushers who welcome people and take up the offering. MINISTERS OF THE ALTAR Servers and funeral servers who assist the priest on the altar. MINISTERS OF THE ENVIRONMENT Decorators who create the seasonal environment and workers who keep our church clean. “By this sign may you receive Christ’s love and always follow Him.”

The Pastor’s Desk Dear Friends, May the Lord give you peace! This is a big week! On Thursday we celebrate Thanksgiving and Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. There are two great American Holy Days: The 4th of July and Thanksgiving Day. These days sum up who we are: independent and grateful. These days make us acutely aware of what it means to be American. They are ingrained in our psyche and they probably hold more meaning for the average American than do Christmas and Easter. They are important to us because they unite us with every other American. We set aside Thanksgiving to give thanks to God for all of our good gifts. We have all been taught since we were children that the first settlers of our nation did this after a successful harvest. We are taught that the pilgrims and the Indians sat down together and shared the first Thanksgiving dinner. That is a great American story and one that we will most likely continue to pass on to future generations. Gratitude is certainly the overriding emotion driving this feast, but we live in a very different world than the pilgrims lived in. Rather than filling barns with the fruits of your harvest you are probably paying bills and trying to save a little for the kids’ education or your retirement with the fruits of your harvest. It may not always be easy to make ends meet, but still, we are grateful for what we have been given and what we have earned. At the same time, we are called to share the fruits of our harvest with those who have no harvest or who have very little for which to be grateful. Americans have always been a sharing and giving people. Thanksgiving Day is a wonderful celebration of our American life. We remember, we give thanks and we celebrate. As we celebrate, let us remember where we have come from and how blessed we have been along the way—even in the struggles of the journey. Let us give thanks for the gifts we have been given and let us be generous in sharing those gifts. Let us give thanks for all of the good gifts God has given us! Thank you for your generosity and from all the friars and staff at St. Mary’s I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving! Advent is one my favorite liturgical seasons. It is the great season of preparation for our celebration of Christmas. The imagery is warm and welcoming. The light of the Advent wreath begins to break through the darkness as we look to our Savior for eternal light. Advent marks a new beginning as we start a new liturgical year. Advent reminds us that a new year is quickly approaching and all things will be made new in the Christ Child. Don’t let this beautiful season Advent pass you by as you prepare for Christmas. Promise yourself now that you will use the four weeks of Advent to not only Christmas shop but also to prepare yourself once more for the coming of the Lord into our lives. So, once again, Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Advent! (The Pastor’s Desk is continued next column)

Our Lady of Guadalupe

n Sunday, December 7, we will join our Latino sisters and brothers in celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe. There will be a bilingual procession departing from St. Anthony’s in Butler at 6:00 AM and arriving at St. Mary’s at 8:30 AM. This will be followed by a bilingual Mass with a Mariachi band at 9 AM in church and a festive celebration in the Carnevale Center. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas. This celebration is a wonderful way to honor the Blessed Mother and to join with our Latino brothers and sisters in celebrating our unity as Americans—North, South and Central! Please join us!
