President’s Steering Column I want to thank everyone who came to Mancini’s for our annual spring kickoff dinner. I talked to most of you and everyone was enjoying themselves. The food was very good and the service was excellent as usual. I want to also thank Key Cadillac for continuing to sponsor the club and for bringing out some of their new cars to look at. We had good weather for the Buick club show and a pretty good turnout. Tony and I were also part of a Professional Car Society get together that weekend that ended with the Buick show. The first St. Francis show was full and the first Anoka show was ok but the weather was shaky. Unfortunately, the weather was not good for our Northstar June Burger Run to the Lookout Bar & Grill in Maple Grove, so the attendance was down this year. Despite looming thunderstorms, we had a nice turnout for the annual Steak Fry a couple weeks ago. More about that in the next newsletter. I spent July 10-19 in New York state. My sister, nephew, and I visited Bethel, Niagra Falls, and New York city. I will do a story about the trip for the newsletter. It was very enjoyable and I would like to go back again sometime. I would also like to congratulate Tony on winning a Golden Quill award from Old Cars Weekly Magazine for his work on this fine newsletter that you are reading. This is the hardest and most important job in the club. Next up we have the September Burger Run to Big Louie’s. Hope to see you all there! - Gene Rafferty

Speaking of Kars… A Message from the Editor Hello everyone, Hard to believe, but we’re headed into Fall already. Much of the busy summer car cruise and show season is behind us. Once again, we made a good showing in various places, enjoyed each other’s company, the cars, great food, and some adventure along the way. It is always nice to see many of you at the various events. Part of the fun included in my job here is that I get to photograph all the beautiful rides you arrive in. Whenever we have an event on a day that dawns bright and sunny, I know I’ll see some beautiful machinery. I want to direct your attention to page 10 of this issue, where you will find a congratulatory letter from Jason Edge, VP of IT for CLC (alphabet soup, anyone?) Our Northstar website, northstarcadillac.org earned a 2015 Website Merit Award from the Cadillac & LaSalle Club due to the hard work and diligence of our webmaster, Grayle Leech. If you haven't checked out the website lately, please do so. Grayle keeps our online presence enticing, professional, and up to date. Congratulations, Grayle! I also want to thank you for your patience with the somewhat sporadic publication schedule this year. I’m on the home stretch of finishing my Bachelor of Science degree with major in Mortuary Science. I’ll graduate in December and am excited to report that I already have a job lined up. -Tony Karsnia

The Herald On Tuesday, May 12, 2015, the Northstar Region held it’s annual banquet at Mancini’s Char House in Saint Paul. Over 70 people sat down to dinner that evening, surrounded by the warm hospitality and ambiance Mancini’s is known for. The evening began with a social hour, complete with cash bar and hors d’oeuvres, followed by a dinner of chicken, walleye, and of course, the renowned Mancini’s steaks. Some words of wisdom were spoken by NSR officers Rod Dehmlow, Steve Norenberg, Gene Rafferty, and Tony Karsnia. After dinner, President Gene Rafferty introduced Key Cadillac, continuing as our major club sponsor. Key CEO Michael Stanzak then introduced several of his “key” staff members along with visiting executives from Cadillac. Clearly, these folks were excited to report how Cadillac continues to make great strides in terms of design and quality, directly competing with several renowned import car brands. Of course, it is always wonderful to receive kudos from these folks on our efforts to preserve the classics and keep the Northstar Region flourishing with activity.

Above: Rod & Rita Dehmlow staffed the greeter’s table, making sure everyone had their name tag and meal choice ticket. Right: Social hour and dinner were very well attended again this year. (Karsnia photos)

Clockwise from Top: Michael Stanzak, President of Key Cadillac, presents Gene Rafferty, NSR President, with a generous donation check; executives from Key Cadillac entice attendees to see the beauty, style, and function of the new lineup; old and new Cadillac automobiles can always be guaranteed to show at Mancini’s. Here we see a 59 year span between Al Longley’s ‘56 and a new 2015 XTS exhibited by Key Cadillac; a gleaming white 1968 convertible owned by NSR advertising director, Steve Norenberg; checking out a racy red new CTS are Ihor Yermolenko and Mark Hawkinson; nobody was going to scratch Stephen Page’s “Zoom-Zoom”, a beautiful blue CTS-V wagon. The For-Lorne Cadillac By Jim Elliott My nephew, Lorne, lives in Scottsdale and is a bigtime car guy like me. He comes to visit family and to go to the “Back to the 50’s” car show with me. I go in my 1949 Cadillac and he usually meets me there via a rental car. We sit in lawn chairs, Coca-Colas in hand, watching all the great cars go by. Lorne decided that if he was to go cruising in style, he would need to get his own vintage Cadillac. After reaching this decision, Lorne went shopping on eBay upon returning home. He knew that buying a car unseen is risky, so he called the seller of a Cadillac he was interested in. After a long conversation, he decided to take a leap of faith and bid on the car. He got it! A 1962 Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special with fresh jet black paint and a new maroon interior. Also, it was a rust free New Mexico car. He had it shipped to me for safe keeping until he got back to Minneapolis. When the car arrived on an open trailer, it looked good with no dents and good chrome, but—like any old car—had some issues. I emailed Lorne with a long list of things that needed to be done. Missing interior trim pieces were found and installed. Broken turn signal lenses were replaced. A full tune-up with a new battery, gas lines, and fuel pump helped it start and run better. New seals were put in the steering box. Lorne decided to hold off on the rest of the list, as he could drive the car as-is and fix the rest before the following year’s show. Being safety conscious for his passengers, Lorne decided to have seat belts installed. A full seat belt kit was purchased from Juliano’s and the Cadillac was left at a repair shop for the installation. The kit came with explicit instructions to NOT weld the seat belt anchor plates to the floor pan. The job would require the use of a hoist and two men; one in the car and one under it. Apparently, the shop realized that, if the anchor plates were welded in place, the job could be completed by one man. So that’s what they did. In the process, the mechanic set fire to the lower rear seat cushion and the headliner over it. When they called Lorne they quickly learned they had crossed the wrong man. Lorne drove his now smelly Cadillac to the local upholstery shop for a repair estimate. The upholstery shop said the car would have to be thoroughly cleaned inside and then fully reupholstered. They submitted their estimate accordingly, which was forwarded to the repair shop’s insurance company. While waiting for their decision, the car had to be kept outside because it smelled of fire. It sat in my driveway through the winter. On one occasion when we had company, our guests asked what I had in the garage that was so important that I’d leave such a fine car outside. Naturally, I had to share the whole story with them! Lorne finally got a settlement check from the insurance company, but by that time, had lost all interest in the Cadillac. He sold it to a salvage company in California after listing it on eBay, stating that it had been in a fire. It is—hopefully—now someone else’s dream.

September 2015 Editor’s Note: It is stories like the one you just read on the previous page that we enjoy receiving here at The Herald office, although we wish this one had a happier ending. The old car hobby can be very enticing as one looks over gleaming jewels exhibited on a beautiful summer’s day, but care must be taken to research everything from car itself to the mechanics and restoration personnel who may be hired to work on it. Too often, I have seen people lose interest in a good car project because the car wasn’t right for them or, as was the case here, a mechanic’s ignorance squelched the enthusiasm. Hopefully, Lorne will eventually give old Cadillac ownership another try...

Congratulations to all of our Website of Merit Award Winners! First, for those that do not know me, my name is Jason Edge and will be serving as your CLC VP of IT. As many of you know, Dave Rubins is now the CLC Executive Vice President and has turned over the reigns as VP of IT to me. I also chair the IT Committee which oversees the annual Website of Merit judging. I am also director and webmaster of the 1963/64 Cadillac Chapter. I am a big proponent of a robust, inclusive, and interactive website that brings members together and reaches out to potential new members. We live in the “internet age” and a growing majority of people around the world now connect and communicate via the internet and social media via their desktops, laptops, smart phones and other mobile devices, and the Cadillac LaSalle Club recognizes the importance of the region and chapter websites through its Website of Merit and Excellence Program. The CLC Chapter and Region websites are evaluated each year using judging criteria spanning multiple categories including: Site Updates, Contact Info, Event Listings and Coverage, Website Integrity, Workable Links to the CLC and other websites, and various other Miscellaneous Extra Credit criteria. Chapters that receive a minimum score are recognized as recipients of the IT Committee’s 2015 Website of Merit Award and can display the attached icon on your website. You are among the elite websites that have met and exceeded that criteria and can proudly display your well-earned Website of Merit badges. I have attached the badges as .jpg and .png files. You can also download these files along with a .eps version, and the list of all winners at this box.com link: https://app.box.com/ s/38sm3vvie8ar1adbfqb8fo3af88rqqam Again, Congratulations on receiving the the 2015 Website of Merit Award! Special thanks to Bob Steur for sending in these three photos from the 2015 All GM Show on Sunday, June 7. As usual, the CLC Northstar Region made a great showing. Another one of Bob’s fantastic photos appears on the cover.

Thanks also to Stephen Page for submitting the photo at left, depicting several NSR members enjoying great food at the Minnetonka Drive-In on a beautiful summer evening. We make an annual trek to this drive-in, usually for our July Burger Run, which was held July 14 this year.
