A Note from the Superintendent DUTIES OF AN NVMI PARENT: This week’s duties are #7, 8, and 9. Require your child to adhere to the cadet code of honor at all times. The NVMI Honor Code is stated below: NVMI CADET CODE OF HONOR At North Valley Military Institute, cadets learn and behave by a code of conduct that will serve them well during their time at the academy and long after they have graduated. It is simple, and should govern everything cadets do both on and off campus. Violating the cadet code will lead to disciplinary action and disciplinary consequences which may include suspension or expulsion from the North Valley Military Institute.

7.

Participate in Parent Advisory Council activities and complete voluntary parent service hours, including attending student led conferences, general parent meetings, and other mandatory activities.

8.

Praise your child’s achievements and celebrate triumphs.

9.

Communicate with teachers when you have questions and respond to contacts from the school.

PLEASE help your child realize that being an honorable person is so critical to their success as an adult. Don’t allow them to get away with “small” acts of disrespect or dishonesty. Such “small” acts lead to much bigger problems later in life. DEMAND that your child is honest at all times, shows respect to everyone, and never lies, cheats, or steals. This is part of what makes NVMI special --- this code of honor. When an NVMI cadet breaks this code, they are subject to a hearing before the NVMI HONOR COUNCIL, a group of senior cadets who conduct a meeting very similar to a trial. The cadet is given an opportunity to present their side to the case, and a jury of cadet senior leaders hears evidence and makes a decision about whether the cadet is guilty of violating the Honor Code. If they find the cadet guilty, they make a recommendation to the school administration about consequences. Your child will not like appearing before the Honor Council. Do everything you can to help them be LEADERS OF CHARACTER – who do the right thing always.

STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES A great way to fulfill the duties above is to come THIS THURSDAY to Student Led Conferences from 4:30-6:00 pm. THIS IS YOUR ONLY WAY TO GET YOUR CHILD’S PRINTED REPORT CARD FROM QUARTER ONE. NVMI does not mail the report cards. Classrooms will be open from 4:30-6:00 and YOUR CHILD will lead you in a discussion about how they earned the grades they earned. These are NOT parent/teacher conferences. Your child should be able to explain to you why they earned the grade they earned, how they need help from you, what help they will receive from their teachers, and what exactly they will do to continue on their current path or work for improvement. If your child does a good job running their student-led conference, you should not end up with any questions for your child’s teacher, but if after the conference you still do have questions, teachers will have sign-up sheets for you to come have private parent/teacher conferences. These conferences also are a way for you to fulfill duty #8 which is to praise your child’s achievements. Please try to remain positive, even if your child’s grades are not yet what you expect them to be. Preparation for student led conferences is stressful for students, and we want them to feel good about their efforts. Classroom will be closed at 6PM and most students will require at least a half hour total for the conferences for all classes, so plan to be here not later than 5:30 to get them done in time. Parking is always a challenge, so plan to park on the side streets if the gate on Allegheny is closed because the lot is full. There is parking on Haddon, Allegheny, and Telfair, in addition to the streets around the agriculture area across from the NVMI inspection gate.

Report to the Haddon Street gate (football field side of the school) and request your child. Then follow instructions to “pick up” your child (remember we

will not actually be releasing students, so this is just a practice opportunity for all of us).
