PATRIOT BULLETIN

Chapter Notes PATRIOTS, BEING ELECTED AS THE 2012 CHAPTER COMMANDER IS A GREAT HONOR, AND IT COMES WITH GREAT RESPONSIBILITY THAT I WILL DO MY UTMOST TO LIVE UP TO. THE CHAPTER IS HIGHLY ACTIVE AND IS ENGAGED IN MANY POSITIVE EVENTS AND PROGRAMS. MY PLEDGE IS TO CARRY FORWARD THE CHAPTER’S WORK THAT I HAVE INHERITED

COMMANDER’S MESSAGE

Greetings Patriots, First, let me say “Thank you” to everyone for electing me as your new Commander. I’ll do my very best to live up to your confidence. I would also like to congratulate the rest of the newly elected officers. I look forward to working with each of you. Any organization is only as good as those persons willing to give of their time, talents, and knowledge, we are no different. I know that I’ll need your assistance, knowledge, inspiration and muscle from time to time. Please bring me your ideas, concerns, thoughts, and together we can do great things. I would also like to thank Harold and Rose Weeden for hosting the Annual Picnic and elections. It’s always a pleasure to be treated so graciously by two of the most wonderful people I know (the Weeden’s). Let’s not forget the May 19th meeting at Hills Café. We will be having our “Swearing In Ceremony” then. It will be a double ceremony for me, as that is my birthday as well.

(May 28th). If you have not already made plans for your Memorial Day, please think about attending one of these two ceremonies, either the one at Sun City (Georgetown) or the one in Cook-Walden Capital Park Cemetery (Pflugerville). Both have excellent events where one can remember and reflect on the real meaning of Memorial Day. Although Chapter 1919 has had representation there each year in the recent past, the chapter will be an active participant in the Sun City ceremony this year for the first time. Let us not forget what Memorial Day is truly about …. It’s not about picnics and the beginning of Summer, it’s for us in solemn ceremony to remember our fallen comrades that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Take some time this Memorial Day to honor those who’ve paid for America’s freedoms. As we move forward into our Summer Break, after Memorial Day, let’s be thinking ahead about the publication of the next issue of our newsletter (July-August Edition) we have a continuing need for your articles, input, ideas. I really hope to see you before our Summer Break at one or all of our events. If we miss you, please have a safe and happy summer, and we hope to catch up with you very soon. Yours in Patriotism,

We also have Memorial Day coming up very quickly THE PATRIOT BULLETIN IS PUBLISHED, NORMALLY MONTHLY, BY THE TEXAS CAPITAL CHAPTER 1919, The MILITARY ORDER of the PURPLE HEART of the U.S.A., Inc., 5701 PAINTED VALLEY DRIVE, AUSTIN, TEXAS, 78759, FOR ITS MEMBERS. We do make mention of them from time to time, and this is one of those times. Patriot Bern Ballard has written a book titled “On To The Sea,” 2010, Blurb Press. (you can find it in Blurb’s online bookstore at www.Blurb.com/books/2847645 or call Bern’s son, Scott Ballard, 713-533-1444 for info). RODOLFO “RUDY” ALANIZ Army, Korea Patriot, Chapter 1919

Rodolfo Alaniz was born in 1928, the fifth of 13 children of Roque and Sara Alaniz of Mission, Texas. The children grew up there, in the Rio Grande Valley town of Mission and five of the sons served in the military. Two of Rudy’s older brothers were drafted in WWII, and Ricardo, a rifleman in the 8th Infantry Division, was killed in Germany in the spring of 1945. The loss of his brother deeply affected sixteen year-old Rudy and he says, “I presented my brother’s flag to my mother. That was the saddest part of my life.” Rodolfo enlisted in the Army as soon as he turned 18. He entered active duty on October 23, 1946 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and was sent to Fort Knox, Kentucky for Basic Training. Private Alaniz was then shipped to Japan PFC RODOLFO ALANIZ JAPAN where he served in the occupation forces, assigned to Battery A, 1st Battalion, 13th Field DECEMBER 31, 1947 th Artillery, 24 Infantry Division. While Pfc Alaniz was enroute, on his way home after 13 months in Japan, President Truman involuntarily extended enlistments by one year. After that, Rudy took his discharge as soon as he could and returned home to Mission, but he was there only briefly. After a short break in service he reenlisted and was sent to Fort Hood, Texas (Camp Hood at that time) where he was assigned to Company D, 41st Infantry, 2nd Armored Division. While at Fort Hood, he could visit home often and on one visit he met Miss Gloria Araguz of McAllen and they were soon married. IN THIS PHOTO STUDIO BACKDROP PVT ALANIZ (RIGHT) REALLY WAS IN CALIFORNIA BUT HE WAS AWAITING SHIPPING OUT TO JAPAN, NOT REALLY RETURNING HOME TO TEXAS BY TRAIN

After 3 ½ years at Fort Hood, he was transferred to Fort Bliss at El Paso, Texas. In 1952, after six months at Fort Bliss, he was ordered to Korea as an individual replacement.

Sergeant Rodolfo Alaniz was soon in combat, assigned to 2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, Company I, 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. The division’s units had been rushed into Korea in the summer of 1950, the early days of the war, had seen much action since, and sustained many losses. The 9th Infantry Regiment had its share of the division’s action and of its losses. For the war, the 9th suffered 1,369 killed in action and 4,579 wounded in action. Rudy Alaniz was among those sent to replace casualties lost during the Summer-Fall Campaign of 1952, and was himself wounded only weeks later. What follows is the regiment’s situation when Rudy arrived in October 1952 (from multiple unit history postings on the internet). 9th INFANTRY REGIMENT DISTINCTIVE UNIT INSIGNIA

2nd INF DIVISION PATCH

The 9th Infantry Regiment, which had a battalion of Thailand troops attached, had been in reserve when a series of enemy attacks in October 1952 produced some of the heaviest fighting in more than a year. The initial attack on October 6th opened with the largest volume of mortar and artillery fire received by 8th Army during the war. Action slowed later in the month and on October 25th the 9th moved back into the front line. The regiment was responsible for the entire left half of the division zone, and with four battalions on line that sector included the critical outpost positions of Old Baldy, Porkchop, and the T -Bone. Sgt Alaniz’ 3rd Battalion was one of the units on the line. Enemy shelling was heaviest on Porkchop during late October, but improved fortifications made the hill more defensible than in previous days. Enemy probing attacks, supported by intensive artillery and mortar fire, came almost nightly and grew in size until November 10th when an enemy

PATRIOT BULLETIN

battalion attacked the Thai troops on Porkchop. The attackers were driven off at dawn the next morning, and after that there were only smaller probes in succeeding days that were driven off each time. All units were now well dug in across the Main Line of Resistance and the chain of hill outposts. Winter clothing and equipment of all types had been distributed and the 2nd Infantry Division was prepared for cold weather as no previous force had ever been prepared. Meanwhile, Sgt Alaniz had been wounded on November 4th. He says, “I was hit in the forehead with shrapnel in the evening of November 4th. The Medic treated me that night and sent me off to the Aid Station the next morning. The Aid Station treated me and sent me back to the unit. The next day the Company Commander awarded the Purple Heart to me and four others.” Rudy returned home from Korea in September 1953 and was initially sent to Fort Bliss. He was next stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma for 18 months. Following that, he had a three-year European assignment in Giessen, Germany, where he was assigned to Service Battery, 594th Field Artillery. In 1958 took his discharge from the Army, and then joined the Air Force. Rudy enlisted in the Air Force as an Airman 3rd Class and was sent to Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas for a six-month course in aircraft mechanics. He was 26 years old at that time and he and Gloria had two children, Rudy and Rosemary. He was next assigned to the Military Air Transport Service at Dover AFB, Delaware and while there in 1962 he was selected for the tour of South American countries with the “Friendship 7” capsule. On February 20, 1962 that was the first American spacecraft to orbit the earth, and accompanying the tour to Panama, Puerto Rico, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Mexico immediately after that was one of the highlights of Rudy’s time in the Air Force. Children John A. and Gloria I. were born when Rudy was at Dover. After the three year assignment in Delaware, Rudy was transferred to Kelly AFB, Texas for 7-8 months and following that was assigned to Howard AFB in Panama for three years. His retirement assignment was at Charleston AFB, South Carolina where he took postal training and did transition work with the Post Office. SSG Alaniz retired from the Air Force on June 30, 1968 and moved with his family to Austin, Texas, motivated primarily to be near a sister and brother-in-law. Rodolfo then served a second career with the Postal Service, working in the downtown and the south Austin Post Offices, and retiring in 1989. He has been a Life Member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart for nine years, and this month Chapter 1919 proudly salutes Patriot Rodolfo Alaniz.

...Texas Attorney General Renders Opinion On Important Question About Transferability Of The…

HOMESTEAD PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION FOR SURVIVING SPOUSES ...Of 100% Disabled Veterans… CHAPTER 1919’s PATRIOT FRED LORD HAS RECENTLY COORDINATED WITH THE OFFICE OF STATE SENATOR VAN DE PUTTE, AUTHOR OF THE ORIGINAL LEGISLATION THAT CREATED THE EXEMPTION. THE SENATOR REQUESTED AND RECEIVED THE OPINION OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL REPORTED HERE BY PATRIOT LORD, WITH QUOTES.

Dear fellow Patriot: Background information:” In 2009, enabling legislation was passed to provide fully disabled veterans with a full exemption. In the 2010 interim, veteran organizations asked that, in the event of a veteran's death, the exemption be transferable to the veteran's spouse. Without this transferability, surviving spouses could get hit with an increase in property tax bills at a financially vulnerable time. Thus, in 2011 Senator Van de Putte authored Senate Joint Resolution 14 which was the enabling legislation to allow the transferal of the 100% property tax exemption to surviving spouses of 100% disabled veterans. This constitutional amendment was protected from being vetoed and was sent directly to Texas voters, who voted in support of the new law. Due to the misinterpretation of the new law by some appraisal districts, an Attorney General opinion was requested to receive clarity on the eligibility of surviving spouses to receive the exemption. Some districts were interpreting the law to mean that only the surviving spouse of fully disabled veterans who died after January 1, 2012 would be eligible to receive the benefit, which was not the intent of Senator Van de Putte. The Attorney General agreed that no such limitation was proper.

If a 100% disabled veteran died after 2009, the surviving spouse is eligible to receive the allotted property tax exemption.” "I am extremely pleased that Attorney General Abbott recognized that the deciding factor for eligibility is the status of the spouse on or after Jan. 1, 2012, not the date of the veteran's death," said Senator Van de Putte. "The point of the legislation was to prevent surviving spouses from losing their home, which would require the transfer of the exemption." BOTTOM LINE: If the Veteran was receiving 100% property tax exemption at the time of his/her death after 2009 then the surviving spouse will also receive the same 100% property tax exemption for this year 2012. I checked with both Williamson and Travis counties and they do know about the change. The spouse may also move and carry the tax exemption with them for the new house but the new house cannot be valued more than the current house. If the new house has more value the spouse will have to pay the difference. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding that existed.

PURPLE HEART COFFE BAR in the AUSTIN VA OUTPATIENT CLINIC ...Patriot Jess Farmer Requested This Honoring The Memory Of His Coffee Bar Serving Partner... Each day the clinic doors are open, Chapter 1919 serves, free of charge, refreshments and snacks to the disabled veteran patients at the Austin VA Outpatient Clinic. This is the biggest and best thing we do, and for large numbers of veterans in the Austin area, our Purple Heart Coffee Bar is the first thing they see as they enter the clinic and it is the first thing that introduces them to our nationwide Purple Heart vets organization and to Chapter 1919,

personally oversees this program and keeps a team of 25 trained volunteers that he schedules to work shifts on his “duty roster.” Those volunteers have been serving more than 50,000 cups of coffee, and thousands of servings of orange juice and snack packets in each of the 14 years we have been WWII VET, JESS FARMER, (LEFT) WORKED THE COFFEE BAR FOR in operation. To become a volunteer, YEARS WITH VIETNAM VET, RICK SELLERS.
