R E F L E C T I O N S AWA R D S 2013-2014 Theme “Believe, Dream, Inspire…” The Reflections Arts Recognition Program is a national arts recognition and achievement program for students. Since 1969, more than 10 million students across the nation have taken part in this popular PTA program. The Reflections Program provides an excellent opportunity for students of all ages to: Unleash their creative talents and be inspired Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork Experience the joy and fun of making art Tap into critical thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme Receive positive recognition for original works of art Students submit an original piece, inspired by the annual theme, for their school’s Reflections Program in any of the following arts areas. Dance Choreography Music Composition Film Production Photography Literature Visual Arts To allow student artwork to be recognized and judged with the appropriate developmental age and skill levels in mind, the Reflections Program is organized by school grade, offering five (5) divisions. Primary: Preschool-Grade 2 Intermediate: Grades 3-5 Middle School: Grades 6-8 High School: Grades 9-12 Special Artist: Ungraded To take part, student entries at a school are first recognized, judged and celebrated by the local PTA unit. Some selected unit entries are then chosen to represent the
PTA at the council and district PTA levels. Student artwork submitted to California State PTA by a district PTA will be considered for an Award of Excellence and an Award of Merit. Students recognized with a California State PTA Award of Excellence will have: An opportunity to showcase and perform their artwork at the California State PTA convention Prizes including an Award of Excellence medal, certificate and $100 savings bond presented on stage at convention An expense-paid trip for the award-winning student and one parent/guardian to California State PTA convention These Award of Excellence entries represent California State PTA at the National level of the Reflections Program. Student recipients of the National PTA Award of Excellence and Award of Merit are recognized at the annual National PTA convention and their artwork is featured as part of the program’s traveling, national exhibit.
FUTURE REFLECTIONS PROGRAM THEME The Reflections Program annual theme search offers another great way for students to get involved in the Reflections Program. Encourage your student to brainstorm and imagine a theme that will appeal to others in preschool through grade 12. For submitting the award-winning theme, the student receives $100 and recognition at the National PTA convention in June. Entries are due November 1. This is how I show everyone how I am feeling and what I think. This is a picture of me at camp Lodge. Camp Lodge is when my family spends time together in the summer. This time is special. The picture is at nighttime, I am roasting marshmallows and playing with rocket Balloons. I am in my power chair. I love my chair. In it I am able to move by driving, sit up and do lots of things. I want to show everyone how my chair is set up and decorated with the tray, seat belt and my arm slings. The slings are very cool, they help me move my arms so I can hold the stick and marshmallow. I can do lots of things in my chair it is purple, my favorite color. This picture makes me so happy. I want everyone to know how happy I am and that I believe in me and that anyone can do anything they want and be happy.”

Now I watch on the cliff at sunset. I’m angry because I’m blind and have been watching the sun for too long. Again, I wake up and go to sleep. My name is Dakota Henshaw, and my life is anything but normal. After all, having cerebral palsy doesn’t make for a very normal life. I live in a house. I eat food. I’m a human being. But I can’t live in that house without someone always there, watching me, making sure I don’t lose my balance or have one of my fits. I can’t eat that food without it first being spoon-fed to me as if I were a baby. And, let’s be honest, most people really don’t see me as a real human being. They talk about me as if I weren’t right there, as if I were deaf or something. They look away when they see me in my wheelchair with my head lolling to one side, my limbs mostly immobile. I can’t control that. It’s not my fault. But the worst part is they think I’m dumb. I mean

first-class, can’t-tell-mouse-from-elephant stupid. I don’t have the kind of cerebral palsy that affects someone’s intelligence. I can see, read, count and add in my head without a problem. The real problem is that I can’t tell people that. My parents seem to be the only people who believe the details of my diagnosis and know I’m as smart as anyone else, despite skeptical looks from people who have seen me. My first-place regret about having cerebral palsy is that I can’t write. I love words. I love the way they sound and the way they can be twisted, manipulated, and paired with other words to create new worlds of sound, texture, flavor, color, and music. In my head I like to create stories about the things around me. I start with making phrases, then I mush the phrases together into a little story and add onto it. A couple in love takes a lock and writes both their names on it. After the lock is fastened on the bar, the key is tossed into the river. The act represents the permanence of the relationship and the hope, belief, and dream about their future together. This custom is spreading throughout the world and is inspiring more romantic promises and dreams.”
