Grace. It is—not at all coincidentally, I now think—the name of

the street where my wife and I first lived together. It is the middle name of our firstborn child, who with her twin sister has taught us so much about how to accept God’s immanent presence. And it is, I am absolutely sure, the fearful and hopeful state in which my wife and I lay the first night I was home from the hospital after the transplant, feeling like a holy fever that bright defiance of, not death exactly, and not suffering, but meaningless death and suffering—which surely warrants, if anything does, the name of faith. Preparation for Worship We come to worship from a busy and noisy world. As we prepare to offer ourselves in praise and adoration of God, it is important that we step back from our preoccupations and focus our thoughts on God. We ask that you please turn off all cell phones and pagers. As the music begins this morning, please take time to become more aware of the continuing presence of God.  Stand as you are able

 HYMN 303

OLD HUNDREDTH

from Psalm 121

I will lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. God will not let your foot be moved; the one who keeps you will not slumber. The one who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil, and will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and for evermore.

PRAYER of CONFESSION

God of mercy, you sent Jesus Christ to seek and save the lost. We confess that we have strayed from you and turned aside from your way. We are misled by pride, for we see ourselves pure when we are stained, and great when we are small. We have failed in love, neglected justice, and ignored your truth. Have mercy, O God, and forgive our sin. Return us to paths of righteousness through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

ANTHEM

“Do Not Be Afraid”

(Pew Bible, NT page 154)

Philip Stopford Paige Kiefner, soprano

Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine. When you walk through the waters I’ll be with you; You will never sink beneath the waves; When the fire is burning all around you, you will never be consumed by the flames. Do not be afraid… When the fear of loneliness is looming, then remember I am at your side; When you dwell in the exile of the stranger, remember you are precious in my eyes. Do not be afraid… You are mine, O my child; I am your Father and I love you with a perfect love. Do not be afraid… - Text: Gerard Markland (based on Isaiah 43:1-4)

“Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me”

ST. CATHERINE

Reformed Church in America

We sing to our Lord a new song; We sing in our world a sure Hope: Our God loves this world, God called it into being, God renews it through Jesus Christ, God governs it by the Spirit. God is the world's true Hope. In each year and in every place we expect the coming of Christ's Spirit. As we listen to the world's concerns, hear the cry of the oppressed,

and learn of new discoveries, God will give us knowledge, teach us to respond with maturity, and give us courage to act with integrity. Come, Lord Jesus: We are open to your Spirit. We await your full presence. Our world finds rest in you alone. Amen.

PRAYERS of the PEOPLE and THE LORD’S PRAYER

PRESENTATION of OFFERINGS ANTHEM

(Prayer request cards can be found in the pew racks) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

“Lass dich nur nichts nicht dauern“

Johannes Brahms

(Let nothing ever grieve thee)

Amen.

Let nothing ever grieve thee, distress thee, nor fret thee; heed God's good will, my soul, be still, compose thee. Why brood all day in sorrow? Tomorrow will bring thee God's help benign and grace sublime in mercy. Be true in all endeavor and ever ply bravely; what God decrees brings joy and peace, He'll stay thee. Amen.

You can find many positive reviews on the internet; Kathleen Norris calls it a “daring and urgent book.” All Third Church-ers are encouraged to read the book, whether you can be present on April 5 or not. The book is now available in hardcover and paperback; one way to order it is through Amazon.com via the Third Church website. A brief essay called “Love Bade Me Welcome” was a precursor to the book. You can read it by logging into: http://www.onbeing.org/program/reme mbering-god/feature/love-bade-mewelcome-gazing-abyss/4662. Printed copies of the essay are available at the church office. There is no cost for the morning. For planning purposes, please register by contacting the church office. Contact John Wilkinson if you have any questions or comments about the book or the Lenten gathering. We hope you can join us on April 5.

Dining Room Ministry Opportunities Our Dining Room Ministry teams have some spaces available and would love to add to their numbers. Each team works one Saturday morning every ten weeks from approximately 10:00am to 1:00pm. We welcome children to join their parents on our teams as well. If this would fit into your schedule, please see Nancy or Robb Adams or email us at [email protected]. Thank you for giving this opportunity of serving our hungry neighbors your consideration. Baby Items Needed at Cameron Recently Cameron Community Ministries has been seeing a very steep increase in the need for baby items, especially diapers, formula, and warm clothing. Additionally, gently used equipment for infants such as strollers or Pack-n-Plays are needed. Donations can be dropped off at the church or taken directly to Cameron. RAIHN RAIHN –in winter—A Request We’ve just finished an inspiring rotation with ten RAIHN guests taking refuge from the brutal cold in our snug Christian Education building. We found, however, that we need more blankets. Each guest was provided two blankets to start, but that wasn’t enough. We needed more blankets than we have in our supplies. So, as you move toward spring, please remember our RAIHN guests and bring any spare, washable, twin-size blankets you have to the church office with a note that they’re for RAIHN at Third Church. If you’d like a

receipt for tax purposes, please include your name with your donation. April Volunteer Opportunities Our next RAIHN rotation starts on Palm Sunday and continues through Holy Week. As we start to assemble our hosting and setup/takedown teams, now is the time to check your calendar. Please contact Wendy Shellman no later than March 20 for your volunteer spot ([email protected] or 3838288). Thank you for all you do to make this ministry successful.
