Second Sunday in Lent (Cycle B) Pastor’s Corner This Sunday brings us a message of love. One that fills us with enthusiasm. God loved us first, and His love is eternally faithful. Now we know that our life is leading us to a wonderful end; to the arms of God, our Father. The letter of St. Paul which we hear in the second reading fills us with confidence and joy. “If God is for us, who can be against us? God did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will He not also give us everything else along with Him? Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness or peril, or the sword?” Our heart rejoices because in the Eucharist we have the supreme revelation of the love of God. God loves us, and His love is unconditional and with no regrets. In the Eucharist, God loves us to the point of giving us His only Son as food and nourishment for life.

Saints this Week/Santos de la Semana March 7, Saints Perpetua and Felicity (believed to have died 203) are Christian martyrs of the 3rd century. Perpetua was a married noblewoman, said to have been 22 years old at the time of her death, and mother of an infant she was nursing. Felicity, a slave imprisoned with her and pregnant at the time, was martyred with her. They were put to death along with others at Carthage in the Roman province of Africa. The Passion of St. Perpetua, St. Felicitas, and their Companions is one of the oldest and most notable early Christian texts. It survives in both Latin and Greek forms, and purports to contain the actual prison diary of the young mother and martyr Perpetua. Scholars generally believe that it is authentic.

The POPE SPEAKS/HABLA EL PAPA Lenten Message, 2015 In order to receive what God gives us and to make it bear abundant fruit, we need to press beyond the boundaries of the visible Church in two ways. In the first place, by uniting ourselves in prayer with the Church in heaven. The prayers of the Church on earth establish a communion of mutual service and goodness which reaches up into the sight of God. Together with the saints who have found their fulfilment in God, we form part of that communion in which indifference is conquered by love. In the second place, every Christian community is called to go out of itself and to be engaged in the life of the greater society of which it is a part, especially with the poor and those who are far away.

Thursday,

February 19th as the St. Hugh middle school students held the first St. Hugh History Wax Museum. There were many different prominent historical figures on display. The students who had been researching a historical character for three months prior to the event, were dressed in full costume for the night. They gave informative presentations to the parents and guest and even had props on hand to aid them with their projects. At the end of the night, students received awards

Black History Month In honor of Black History Month, St. Hugh School has been teaching our students about the African-Americans in history who have impacted our country. The elementary students focused on subjects including inventors, musicians, poets, scientist, architects, and more. Students were assigned a famous black American from the past or present and were asked to research information about them to complete an assignment. The results were amazing and the projects were put on display in the school hall for all to see. Even our preschoolers joined in by creating a multi-cultural handprint quilt that was hung near the art room. The lessons and projects provided students with an interactive and informative way for celebrating the important contributions African Americans have made to our nation.

Lenten Pretzels In preparation for the season of Lent, the third grade students have been learning about the importance of prayer. Recently they listened to the legend of the pretzel and how a monk formed dough into thin strips crossed into a looped twist like the folded arms of children in prayer. The legend states that the monk would give these treats to children who had learned their prayers. After listening to the story, the students had the opportunity to create and bake their very own pretzels.

Celebrating 70 years of Consecrated Life On January 31st, Archbishop Thomas Wenski celebrated a Mass at St. Mary Cathedral in recognition of the World Day of Consecrated Life. During the mass, Sister Mary Pat Hale was honored on her 70th year of religious life. Sister Mary Pat was the middle school math teacher at St. Hugh for 16 years before her retirement in 2001. She is still very active and remains one of our substitute teachers. Congratulations to her and to the other six religious that were honored at this special mass. May God continue to bless them.
