From the Commodore By Commodore Dave Witham he year is rapidly coming to a close and soon you will have a new Commodore to carry on. This year has gone by very fast and very busy. A lot has been accomplished and a lot is left to do. I am very happy that we were able to finally put the slip rate issues to bed. I am thrilled at the great look and feel of the club, thanks to Bill Fedde and his hardworking property management crew. A special thanks to Kim Bernard who’s decorating flair and eye for colors and style is certainly evident in the new look. The Marina Management Committee under Jim Sulley is to also be commended. They have clarified the rules, documents and slip agreements while still keeping the docks looking and working great. This has at times been a thankless job and we appreciate their persistence. Shortly, you will be seeing a ballot asking for your approval of the changes made to the Bylaws and the Finance Manual. A special thanks to the chairs of those review committees, Mike Stuzane (Bylaws) and Jeff Stansfield (Finance Manual) and their hard working committee members. They put in many long hours and much thought and deliberation to make needed modifications to our governing documents to help us all in smoothing the administration of the club. The Board is recommending and asking for your “yes” vote to

these changes. I personally feel the modifications are excellent and should serve us well in the years to come. You probably know or saw that I was roasted in style last month, thanks to Gary Bright and his hard working creative crew. You will see the details in his column. Being a roastee is not my idea of a great evening, however, most of it was done in a manner we could enjoy and my belly ached from laughing by the end of the evening. A special thanks from me to Kate Ford and Donna Johnson for the great music and the mini-skirt choreography. And the music by Rick Whitfield was over the top. (Nice to have a professional entertainer as a break from the roasters!) Jim (blackmail photographer) Sulley took many great photos of your Commodore oggling Dave’s Darlings. Thanks to the Wheelers for the great video production, however there were a few photos I could have done without. Now I have one more event to endure, the Change of Command. I only hope we quickly get to the business of welcoming Mike Raider, the new Commodore, rather than further roasting of the old one. If this article is a little hurried and disorganized, please excuse me. We are moving and as I write this the movers are waiting to cut my computer line and carry out the desk.

Vice Views By Vice Commodore Michael Raider fter some minor technical difficulties, the new website is up and running. At this writing we have about 75 members who have received accounts. If you are a member who has not signed up yet just point your favorite web browser to: www. venturayachtclub.org and click on the “Create new account” link. Then all you do is follow the on-screen instructions. You will receive two e-mails from the system. The first will let you know that your account request was submitted, and the second will give you a one-time use password. When you login for the first time you will be required to change your password. Among the cool features of the website are the on-line forums which you can access at: www. venturayachtclub.org/forum. We currently have six forums set-up: Cruise, Dock Talk, Fishing, Racing, Youth Sailing, and For Sale. Another cool feature is that any registered user can upload photos into the Photo Gallery. You can only load photos into an existing gallery. So if you want a new gallery created for your favorite event just send an e-mail to the office asking them to create the new gallery. by the committees that were tasked to review those documents. The ballots should be mailed by the time you read this. If you have any questions about the proposed changes please ask any Bridge or Board member. The BOD asks for your support in approving these two documents. These documents are being updated to include the recommendations of the Rate Review Committee that were previously accepted by the BOD. Also the Financial Policy Manual has accumulated a number of procedures that have been approved by the BOD. The committee was tasked with reviewing the procedures to determine if any should be incorporated into the manual and to eliminate any procedures that are obsolete. Bill Fedde is working to finish a couple of projects before the end of the year too. The slurry seal of the parking lot should be complete. Also the downstairs wind curtains should be in place too. Bill and the Property Management Committee have done a great job this year in taking care of some much needed maintenance around our club. Happy Holidays everyone,

Michael Raider

From the Rear By Rear Commodore Gary Bright tanding Room Only (Mostly Participants) for Witham Roast. The Commodore Dave “With Him or Without Him” Roast was held at the club on October 24, 2009. For those of you who missed it, check out the photos on pages 7 and 8. For those in attendance, please understand that I did my best to sort through the reams of material and photos submitted, even to the extent of taking on a co-host, Jr. Staff Commodore Jeff Stansfield, to assist. This was the first time I have had to do that in over twenty years of roasting. Jeff and I also tried to accommodate the large number of club members who wanted to participate by personally roasting our Commodore, but, of course, we were somewhat limited by building occupancy standards. I would like to thank, in rough order of appearance, Stan Whisenhunt for producing Tortoise racing vests for all participants and Dave’s family (a picture Dave will cherish forever), Dave’s “nightmare” Board of Directors, Norris “Show Me Your Documents” Leap, Tom “Black Helicopter” Ramey, and, in particular, Katie “Spot Audit” Johnston. Katie was able to come up with photographic proof that money

S

missing from the club’s elevator fund had gone directly into the construction of the Witham’s new house in the Keys, which bore an uncanny resemblance to the Playboy Mansion. Kate Ford and Donna Johnson took us back to Dave’s formative years in the 60s with some re-worked Turtles music and were ably assisted by Davey’s Darlings (Julie Leonard, Linda Witham, Peggy Meinke, Susan Cooper, and Emily Jones). Donna even arranged for professional accompaniment by Rick Whitfield, which may have been the only part of the program Dave found enjoyable. Vice Commodore Mike Raider traced Dave’s musical career from early aspirations to an uneventful conclusion and, as usual, Flash and Dotty Wheeler did a great job in coming up with one embarrassing photo after another. Even Linda Witham joined in by bringing an assortment of Dave’s hats for all occasions, and Cecile Schwedes explained that some of Dave’s recent memory problems may be traced to a disorder known as Raceheimers (an inability to recollect when your boat finished).

From the Rear Continued from page 6 The event concluded with Stan Whisenhunt, as a City Inspector, and Ventura Keys residents Paul Swanson, Jim Clark, and Ken Collins questioning Commodore Dave, realistically portrayed by Jeff Stansfield, right down to the pocket protector (check out the pictures), about his construction project. Under cross-examination from Whisenhunt, Commodore Dave was forced to admit that the massive structure just now completed will be used as a retirement complex for old commodores. Rumor has it that when the sun reflects off the hundreds of windows in the Witham mansion, the daytime temperature in the nearby Clark residence is in excess of 175° F. (due to the microwave effect), and during a recent hot spell Jim and Susie were only able to come out of their back bedroom at night. This year’s MVPs are Steve and Pat Ehret, who chartered a Catalina 30 just to take part, and which was the focal point of most of the weekend’s activities. Close runners-up would be Joel and Susan Bozarth, who brought over the best smoked marlin dip ever, and Ken and Doris Collins, who sent over a great artichoke casserole even though they could not attend. Anthony and the chefs also went out of their way to have special dinners, including a great pasta bar on Friday night and a taco bar on Saturday. The club was just about at capacity both nights, and all VYC members in attendance at these events were dutifully following our Commodore’s urging to have a good time in 2009.

Dock Watch By Jim Suley, Port Captain Be sure to invite your friends to show off our club, as I do believe a grand time will be had by all. This month’s nautical question. The wind is ESE, and a sailing vessel is steering NW. What tack is she on, and what fog signal should she sound? A) Port tack- one blast at oneminute intervals, B) Starboard tackone blast at one minute intervals, C) Starboard tack-two blast at one minute intervals, D) Starboard tack- one prolonged and two short blasts at two-minute intervals.

ow hear this--- This year’s Parade of Lights will be Dec.18-19. Rick and Pat Metheny will be hosting VYC’s second annual boat decoration contest. Prizes will be given for best sail, power, and overall. So I say hoist the halyards with lights and merry, let all know we have the holiday spirit. Have a boat elsewhere? That’s what the guest dock is for. Also, VYC will be entering the club’s launch Leo Robbins in the parade of lights. Those who are interested in helping out with this should contact Gary Meinke.

Great Turnout for New Member Breakfast By Hope Avery he fourth New Member Breakfast was held at the club in October. We had a great turnout for the event. Some of those on hand Sunday morning to help our new members get situated were the Bridge, Board and Committee Chairs. Our presenters covered every conceivable topic from cruising, fishing, racing, the youth program, social functions, Catalina cruise, predicted log racing and our new web site. As in the past our focus has been to create an opportunity for the club to showcase all of the activities it has to offer. This year we made a special effort to reach out to prospective members so that they could come and meet us. Several of the people who inquired about the club over the past year did attend the breakfast and seemed genuinely

interested in joining the club! I am very excited about our new web site as I think it will have an impact on our ability to connect more closely with prospective members, each other and the public. It’s just a fact that folks are becoming more accustomed to using social networking through face book, e-mail and now even twitter. The web site will serve as a great tool for the yachting community to find us and help us to grow our membership while we strive to find those new members with the same all hands on deck philosophy that built this club. My thanks to Debbie DeFreitas and Michael Raider who helped me to organize this event and to Anthony and our staff who make coming to the Yacht Club a pleasure and treasured experience.

Office Waves By Yacht Club Manager Anthony Jesu ell another year has come and gone and on behalf of the staff we would all like to thank Commodore Witham, ViceCommodore Raider and Rear Commodore Bright for their help and guidance over the year. It has been a very busy and trying year and I would like to thank Commodore Witham for his commitment to the club and his hard work over the last three years. I’m sure you and Linda are both looking forward to enjoying your retirement. I would also like to take this time to thank all the chair persons and volunteers who take the time, not only for this year as there are many who contribute year after year, to make the club such a special place. Their input,

Burgee of the Ventura Yacht Club By Donald F. Mills, VYC Historian he familiar burgee of the Ventura Yacht Club can be simply described as a red reclining “V” at the top of a navy blue pennant. The “V” of course stands for Ventura. The burgee is a simple design that is easy to recognize at considerable distance. The “V” fits the triangular shape of the pennant very nicely. The design has been around a long time; perhaps since incorporation in 1940. The current burgee first appeared in the Forecast masthead in the March 1945 issue. About the same time a detailed description of the burgee appeared on the inside cover of a printed Bylaws booklet. That description is reproduced in the accompanying box. The word description is further illustrated with the drawing. Members take note of the proportions; particularly the “V.” All the stripes are of equal width where they intersect the hoist. Too many times flag makers, printers, artists and others do not follow the correct proportions and the result is that the product produced has a skinny “V.” The Ventura Yacht Club burgee was listed in a 1950’s edition of Lloyd’s Register American Yacht Club Burgees and Private Signals of the United States and Canada. By now you may be wondering pennant or burgee; which is it? For that answer please refer to the side bar which is taken from Chapman Piloting Seamanship and Small Boat Handling.

Another Reason Why VYC is ‘Family’ By Lisa Renshaw hat can you do to help when your 32-year-old coworkerwho was diagnosed with breast cancer when five months pregnant - has surgery - two rounds of chemo and a lifetime dose of radiation - and then the cancer recurs when her beautiful daughter is only a year and a half old? That’s the question that has been haunting my group at Amgen since the recurrence was diagnosed a month ago. Here we arescientists- helpless- a card and a fruit basket just aren’t enough - we want to help her fight and really do something meaningful….what could we do she would like? My mumbled response was “We can give her grass for her daughter to play on.” and “Operation Sodbuster” was born. You see, she and her husband bought their first home - a bank repo - about six months ago, before the little one could walk. Their first priority was cleaning up the inside so they could move in…time enough for landscaping in the fall when the temperatures drop. I nicknamed their yard the “briar patch” and their daughter has no place to play outside - she’d be covered in foxtails and pricker balls within minutes. As their neighbor, I’ve helped them thru the first “fix its” of home ownership and watched them get confident and lay out plans for the future. But all those plans came to a crashing halt four weeks ago. Did we want them hiding Easter

Eggs next spring behind weeds and crabgrass?? NO! Could we get the HOA off their backs for the ugly lawn. YES!! We will give them grass!! Then I measured - wow…1250 square feet that’s gonna cost us a lot of money … then Paul Moore told me - “Hey- you should ask at the club - the guy who owns Southland Sod is a member”… really?? Wow - maybe he can get me a slight discount…since I’m a fellow member and it’s a great cause… I’ll give them a call. I called and asked for Jurgen Gramckow and was put through to his voice mail. I left a long message explaining our situation and my cell number. Within an hour Jurgen called me back and said: “When do you need it, how many square feet and where do you want it delivered? I’ll GIVE you the grass.” WOW! Now I work with a great bunch of people at Amgen, and the outpouring of support and love in this particular instance has been extraordinary, but Jurgen’s gift has trumped it all. VYC is a great bunch of people too. I just want you all to know that Jurgen is one of the best of the bunch. How many people would do something like this – unasked and for someone they don’t even know? There will be 50-100 people at the house prepping and installing the sod come November 14 and I guarantee that each and every one of them will never forget the kindness of this VYC member. Thank you Jurgen! You don’t even know me either but you have a friend for life!

VYC Rolls CIYC in Bocce Ball Tournament By Brian York and Norris Leap he young and the young-atheart had a ball at the CIYC Bocce Grounds on Sunday, October 25. VYC walked away from the first annual tournament with a stunning 20-10 victory over heavily favored CIYC. Ten teams from each club squared off in the event. We knew we were in for a battle when their teams starting showing up in matching uniforms (and we learned of all the trash talking that had taken place leading up to the event --thanks Stan!). We proceed to get off to a rather slow start (two wins & eight losses after the first ten games) and despite inept (Stan - I think that’s what you called it) play from your team captains we rallied back winning eighteen out of the next twenty games played. Two VYC teams were undefeated with three victories each. Huge congratulations to team Lab Lovers (Brian & Donna Johnson), and team Wonderful (Bernie Marington & Amy West). The tournament was a huge

Sailboat Racing Report By Stan Whisenhunt Baums have perfect Gal & Guy Series aboard Tortoise Christina and Garrett Baum won both races in their class in the J-24 Tortoise to win Class B in VYC’s popular Gal & Guy Series. Deke Klatt crewed for Jackie Lilly aboard Angry Hillbillies, a Zap 26, to take top honors in Class A. They had a second place in the first race and a first place in the second race. The scheduled third race was cancelled because the wind was too light to even sail a shortened onemile course. Seventeen boats competed in the series, with fourteen turning out for the second race. Lilly and Klatt not only won on corrected time but also posted the lowest elapsed time in the class, sailing the course in a rather slow 1 hour, 16 minutes, 5 seconds. Taking second place in the race was Dena Mercer aboard the J-30, Pangea, with Mike Leary as crew. Tracee Cummings came from Marina Del Rey to place third in the race and the series aboard Thriller, a Tartan 10. Taking fourth in the race and second in the series was Roxanne Vettese aboard Funatic, a Choate 48, with Rod Abbott as crew. In the multi-hull class, teenager Sydnee Stanton won easily aboard No Regrets. She posted the day’s best elapsed time of 1 hour, 10 minutes, 25 seconds, and corrected out over second place Indefatigable by more than 40 minutes. In Class B, Tortoise won by just 24

over a minute over Eclipse, a Moore 24, with 14-year-old Katelyn Dembowski at the helm and her father, Jim, doing the crewing. She also took second in the series. Taking third in the race and the series was Diane Miller in Superstition, a Capri 25, with husband Bill as crew.
