COMMODORE’S COMMENTS Hello February ! "Baby its cold outside." I still see people in shorts and it gives me the shivers. I hope the warming trend is on its way. Old Pauxatawaney Phil will let us know soon. Gary Miller It will be a busy month with February 7th open house, 13th Valentines Dance, 15th President’s day and the 27th Mardi Gras, plus all the other great events planed at the yacht club.

this event. So gather your sequins, pearls, and feathers and get ready for a party. Planning is underway with the 2016/2017 Entertainment Committee. We have some exciting new bands lining up. Thanks go to those members helping with band names and ideas. Keep the information coming. We have been asked about changing some themes: Roaring 20s, Spring Fling and The Hop. Let me know what you would like to keep or change. REAR COMMODORE

Now that we have an accounting system that is set up, thanks to Shawn Nagle, we will be looking for someone to train with him so in the future we have someone to take the position. We always need volunteers for everything. It is nice to see some of the new members stepping up. After all it is YOUR club.

Due to an unforeseen set of events I have now assumed the duties of Rear Commodore. Connie Anderson will be taking over my duties as the Fleet Captain. George Fakerty

Thank you all for your support. See you all at the Valentine’s Dinner Dance, Feb. 13th.

I’m still sorting out my respective duties. I know that, together, we’ll see our club grow over the year and we’ll continue to effect improvements that will benefit us all.

VICE COMMODORE

The first task at hand is to get an appointment with FPL for an inspection of the facility to see what needs to be done to lower our use of electricity, as it is one of our largest expenses in the operation of the club.

February is the most popular month of the year for the SVYC Dinner Dances. Our members are back and ready to party.

Looking forward to a fun filled year. Alan Anderson

Valentine's Dinner Dance was at full capacity last year. This has become an annual event for many of our members, and nonmembers, who bring parents, adult children, and of course dates with our single members. Make your reservations early and mail your check to Diana Herres prior to arrival.

“Laissez les bons temps rouler!” (“Let the Good Times Roll”). I can't say enough about Mardi Gras! Debbie Rossi goes all out and participation is encouraged for

PUBLIC RELATIONS It’s February! And that means Valentine’s Day! Saturday the 13th is the time to celebrate. There’ll be champagne – maybe out of plastic Sheri Johnson cups, so byoglasses if you want flutes!!…. We’ll be advertising this one, so make your reservations with Diana now – 941408-9455

Open House is February 7 – Sunday – 1 to 4. We need donations of wine and appetizers. And lots of current members to attend. It was so much fun last November when we had a bevy of members present to greet and visit with our guests. The Royal Aires are still going strong – attendance is growing each week – drop by Tuesdays at 10AM to enjoy these folks. January 26th one of our dancers even provided his own birthday cake! You’ll find a new addition to the Yacht Yarn this time. We’ve added a “New Members” section. This time we are listing those folks who have joined since last October. If you’re there, your dues are paid through December, 2016. Otherwise, dues are on a January to December basis, and are $75/person. We thank those who paid 2016 early, and those who are paying now. Please, help me get this chore over with and send your checks for $75/person to: South Venice Yacht Club P O Box 1599 Venice, FL 34284 attn membership

See you at the Valentine’s Dance – here’s to more and merrier LIBATION’S MANAGER Since your bartender has been ‘on the road’ with Sheri for the last several weeks, most of what we are talking about is distant relatives, Texas chili, Rudy’s great bar-b-que sauce, diesel fuel for a ‘buck TJ Johnson and a half’, and cool to cold weather. Yup; several nights down in the 20s - -  now looking forward to our Valentines Day evening activities: great food and drink, good friends, and a bottle of Champagne on each table. See you’ll soon - - - BUILDINGS & GROUNDS The new year has started with a positive trend for more kayaks and we have built a total of three new racks to store them all. Thanks to Marilyn Sullivan for painting them and all the kayak gang for helping out. Connie Anderson has done a great job Bruce Weaver of organizing these paddlers and she's still

looking for more folks who want to get outside and enjoy nature with her. Give her a call! We pruned some shrubbery back from the ramp, trimmed a few trees and have sprayed the ants. The tent over the picnic tables was damaged in the last wind storm, but George Faketty is going to get a new one from Harbor Freight and we'll have it up soon. The old one can be salvaged and we may put that up on the other side of the grill, giving us twice the shade around the BBQ area. John Elmore has done an excellent job over the years all around the clubhouse, pruning, feeding and planting the foundation shrubbery that makes the place look so nice. He's looking for some help these days and if you'd like to give him a hand, please call him and volunteer. He's very knowledgeable and you may learn a lot from him while working alongside.

Check out Friday the 19th of February if you have time to take Ed Beauette a pontoon ride from the Venice Freedom Boat Club to Sarasota for lunch @ Marina Jacks. Plus...maybe time for a little sightseeing. Time is 10:30 ish to back by 4;00. BYOB and pay for your lunch. I supply the ICE boat and gas. It's a very interesting trip if you haven't done it lately. The boat has room for about 10 people (maybe 12 if you're very friendly) So it's a 1st come to reserve a spot. You might be placed on standby for cancellations. Weather permitting To reserve email Ed Beauette @[email protected] I plan on a trip once a month (or more) to go to spots SOUTH and NORTH... and will work the list of active and eventually inactive members. The address for the Venice location on Venice Island is: 990 Laguna Drive Venice, 34285 941-400-1832

FLEET CAPTAIN Connie Anderson I want to thank our Board of Directors for appointing me Fleet Captain. The position was formerly held by George Faketty who is moving on to Rear Commodore, we will continue to work together to grow our boating activities. Please contact me before you store a boat at the South Venice Yacht Club. Members must first complete the Boating Registration Form located on the member section of the website svyclub.com and pay storage fees. We now have three unregistered boats on the racks and one new, blue, sailboat on a trailer that are unidentified. Paddle Crew closed out a quiet December with a cruise from the Club over to the Nude Beach for a miniChristmas party (no nudity). The Wednesday before New Years we celebrated with a launch from Blackburn Park and an all out calorie busting paddle south along Casey Key. Cool down has started! Our first new year paddle started at Cedar Point Environmental Park and headed up Oyster Creek to stay out of the wind. The cool down effected our Crew the following week with only three hardy members launching at the North Jetty for a calm paddle around Snake Island, Dona Bay, through Lyons Bay and back around Turner Key. On January 20th ten crew members layered up and launched at the Nokomis Beach/Albee Road intracoastal and paddled north, to what I call Shell Beach, for a nice break and close viewing of an Osprey family that always nests on the channel marker a few feet from the beach. We had a request from potential members to paddle with us on Wednesday to check-out what our program is all about. These paddles are designed for experienced club members who may bring along visiting family or close friends. We will accommodate the inexperienced, potential members, by special appointment. David Howes and I took out potential members a couple of weeks ago on our personal spare boats and gave a lesson and a little cruise. Two are now members. So please let me know if anyone wants to tryout paddling, and are considering becoming members, or you are member that wants to give it a try.
