Attachments Understanding Separation Anxiety

Term 3 Week 2

31st July, 2014

Dear Parents, Friends and Caregivers, What a delight it was to view the excitement from the children on the first day back at school as they ventured into their newly renovated classrooms for the first time. The building works has officially concluded, the temporary fencing has therefore been removed and what has been revealed are fresh, contemporary 21st century learning environments. Over the coming weeks the rooms will be finalised and most will receive joinery and soft furnishings. The Brooker Terrace Landscape project is yet to be completed as this component of the scope of works was originally omitted due to budget constraints. It was also believed originally that this project could be funded through the Kean Memorial Inc. Trust. However upon closer inspection of the Trust rules earlier this year, it was revealed that this was not a possibility. Therefore, we have been working behind the scenes to finance this project and we anticipate that over the coming term this landscape will be completed. One of the unfortunate elements associated with this scope of works is discovering that the gum tree located in this area has been assessed as being a risk to students and will subsequently be removed. On the Pupil Free Day our staff was engaged in their ongoing professional project work focusing on numeracy. As mentioned previously, this is our curriculum priority for the coming years and as such will see our teaching staff engaged heavily in this area with students. Mary Mackillop Feast Day Celebration scheduled for Friday 8 August. As founder of the Josephite order in conjunction with Fr Julian Tenison Woods, this Feast day is of paramount importance to our school community and entire Catholic sector. Mary Helen MacKillop RSJ, now known as St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, was an Australian nun who has been declared a saint by the Catholic Church. The Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart were to live in poverty and dedicate themselves to educating poor children. With Mary its first member and Superior the society was founded at Penola on 19 March 1866 with the approval of Bishop Laurence Sheil. The Sisterhood spread to Adelaide and other parts of South Australia, and increased rapidly in membership but ran into difficulties. Tenison-Woods had become director of Catholic schools and conflicted with some of the clergy over educational matters.

One priest with influence over the bishop declared publicly he would ruin the director through the Sisterhood. The result was that Mary was excommunicated by Bishop Sheil on 22 September 1871 for alleged insubordination; most of the schools that by then had been established were closed and the Sisterhood almost disbanded. The excommunication was removed on 21 February 1872 by order of the bishop nine days before she died. Always regarded as holy, she was put forward in 1972 as a candidate for the honour of beatification and canonisation and on 1 February 1973 Mary was beatified on 19 January 1995 at Randwick Racecourse, Sydney, in a Mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II. She was canonised as Saint Mary of the Cross at a Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI in St Peter's Square in the Vatican on 17 October 2010. Mary stood for many things and her vision to establish schools to educate children stands as an inspiration to this very day. The criteria that she employed in constructing her schools were to, "seek first the poorest and neglected" and to provide to these children education and opportunity. Mary was a woman of humility and integrity, her guiding principles and ethos of imploring all people to; "love each other, help and comfort each other" stands as universally grounding principles for all people across the world. The charism of the Josephite tradition is alive and strong at Tenison Woods and as a Catholic School, I continue to see evidence of Mary's charism and legacy permeating through the relationships and behaviours of those I encounter in our community. The upcoming Feast day Mass and celebration is an invitation to the entire community to band together to joyfully celebrate the rich Josephite tradition that we are blessed to have inherited several years ago. Therefore, if you are able to make the time to attend this significant mass we will also be hosting a morning tea directly after the mass that you are also warmly invited to. Staffing News! I officially welcome to our school community Heather Docherty. Heather is replacing Sarah Byrne whilst she is on long service leave for the first four weeks. Paula Burns was due to commence her Maternity leave in week 5 this term; however her Doctors have strongly encouraged her to start this leave ASAP. Consequently, Paula will now conclude at TWCS in 2014 this Friday 1 August. On behalf of the school community I wish Paula and her family every success and blessing for the exciting time ahead. Kyrien Grundy (Relief teacher) will replace Paula Burns for the next two weeks before Heather Docherty steps into that role for the remainder of the year. Assemblies- as a reminder our assemblies are held very fortnight on even weeks and commenced this week. I have attached an article from parenting expert Michael Grose this week focusing on separation anxiety. I have worked with several students and parents over the years pertaining to children being overly distressed when facing the prospect of leaving their parents to attend school. With specific strategies employed and by working in partnership with parents, on most occasions we are successful in alleviating the behaviours and stresses associated with separation. This is a great read and may assist in providing you with some tips with your children if they too experience anxiety related issues.

Regards and best wishes, Mark Battistella Principal

RE NEWS Feast of Mary MacKillop August 8th As a proud Josephite school, we warmly welcome you to join our school celebration of the Feast of Mary MacKillop at 9am Mass on Friday 8th August. Morning Tea with Muffins will be available for parents after the Mass. Please join us as we celebrate Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop; a saint for all Australians.

M and M Day August 8th To help celebrate the feast day of Mary MacKillop, the students at Tenison wood will be receiving a special M and M recess. A small packet of M

and M’s and a

warm Milo. Please send a plastic cup/mug to school with your child. Some of you may be wondering why we are giving the students M and M’s??… well it’s not just because of the obvious letter association. It has been well documented that Mary MacKillop would often carry boiled lollies and sweets in her pocket when teaching in Penola. If a student was upset or hurt, she would reach underneath her habit and produce a lolly for the child; many of the poor country children thought this treat was delightful.

If you DO NOT want your child to receive the special Milo and M and M recess, please let Anna (in the front office) know or tell class teachers. Any parent who would like to assist Vicki with the distribution of the warm Milo drinks, are welcome to meet in the school tuck shop at 10.15am. With God’s Love, Marcia Burges- APRIM

NUMERACY FUN IN R/1

The first day back at school this term marked the 100th day of our school year, so we celebrated the day with a 100th day theme. In numeracy we had to count out 100 items and record our discoveries. Most children started to count out items 1 by 1 but soon discovered it would take them a long time. Gemma suggested we should count out groups of ten. Most children counted in groups of 10, however Rahul and Eli decided to make groups of 5. We discovered that 10 groups of 10 made 100 and 20 groups of 5 made 100. We had so much fun that day. The teachers even made themselves a pair of glasses to wear.
