Welcome to #TeamBTO and thank you for helping us create brighter futures for orphaned children! There are currently 150 million orphaned children in the world, many of whom have been orphaned by the HIV/AIDs pandemic, which began taking the lives of millions of parents in the mid-1990s, especially in SubSaharan Africa.

Our mission

The size of the problem means that surviving relatives and orphanages are stretched to the limit as they try to help these children in need.

A home, a loving family and a good education. All the support needed to grow to a successful adulthood.

Sub-Saharan Africa has both the highest number and highest share of orphaned children in the world, followed by South Asia.

What you will achieve Your fundraising will help provide a child with a secure and stable home, food, clothing, education and medical care. With these essential needs provided, each child can focus on their education - the key a brighter future.

Need some ideas? Birthday/Wedding/celebrations: Ask for donations in lieu of gifts. Run, cycle, climb: Individually or form a team. More friends = more fun + raise more money! Host an event: Dinners, movie or trivia nights and morning teas are great ways to get people involved and have fun. Be brave and have a shave! Chocolate, booze, television: give it up for a good cause. Bake store, garage sales, or get creative and think outside the square!

Personalise your fundraising page, let people know why BTO’s work matters to you.

Make a donation

Starting with a personal donation gets the ball rolling, sets a benchmark and shows your commitment.

Email everyone you know

People who receive email requests are more likely to donate. Those who send more emails, raise more money! Start with 5-10 close contacts to build up some momentum.

Use social media

Tag and thank people who’ve donated while you’re asking for new donations. This spreads the message further and shows that people are already supporting you. Make sure to continue thanking, tagging and updating on social media.

Double your money

Ask if your workplace/gym/cafe can support you by matching donations.

Don’t be afraid to remind

Follow up anyone who might have forgotten or missed your email.

Thank those who donate

They’re supporting you to reach your goal AND building a brighter future for orphans. Make them feel great about what they’ve done.

Ramp it up

To build a sense of urgency and excitement. A lot of money raised in a fundraising campaign comes in at the end, so make sure you keep it up right until the end.

Dear [name], I’m changing the lives of orphaned children and I need your support to help me do it! Beyond the Orphanage is a fantastic organisation helping children in Ethiopia and Nepal, and I’m raising money to support their work. Their unique model places orphaned children in a safe home with a carefully selected guardian. Often these guardians are extended family, who don’t have the means to support their orphaned relative. They support the child through provision of shelter, clothing, education, nutrition, healthcare and emotional support. Their aim is for each child to graduate with a vocation, diploma or degree and the life-skills to steward their own future. Beyond the Orphanage has changed the lives of thousands of children. Thanks to Beyond the Orphanage, there are young adults now graduating from university, who were living on the streets as children. I want to help them continue to change lives. Quick facts

Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of the most populous countries, with one of the largest orphan populations in the world. There are more than 5 million orphaned children in Ethiopia. Nearly 1 million were orphaned by AIDS, many of them nursed their dying parents. The average age orphaned children begin living on the streets is 10 years old. Many young girls living on the streets are forced into prostitution.

Nepal

There are more than 650,000 orphaned children in Nepal. Around 28,000 children are affected by HIV/AIDS. It is estimated that 34% of children aged 5-14 are engaged in some type of child labour, ranging from agricultural work to commercial sexual exploitation.

Beyond the Orphanage

Beyond the Orphanage follows international best practice models to help children be united with relatives, usually grandmothers or grandfathers, aunties or older siblings. When there are no relatives able to support orphaned children, carefully screened guardians are appointed to care for the chidren.

Tips for Facebook fundraising a a a

Always include a link to your fundraising page. Highlight milestones as you reach them e.g. 25% raised, 20 donors, one week to go. Explain why you are fundraising for Beyond the Orphanage. Tag donors in your posts to thank them. When you get close to your goal encourage everyone to help you reach and exceed it. Ask your friends to share your fundraising webpage with their friends If you are participating in an athletic event, post regular updates about your training. Share information about Beyond the Orphanage. Post photos and videos. There are Beyond the Orphanage photos included in this kit, but photos of you are fantastic too!
