First I only knew a bit about swimming, but at the end of the week my knowledge has improved and now I feel as proud as a king. By Zidan Swimming to me was like going to Bali because the water, the place and everything was ever so clear and fun. By Tomy When I first got in the pool I felt free as a bird to do just anything I wanted to do. The water, felt like sitting on the grass, in the nice warm sun. By Olivia In swimming we learnt about saving other people and ourselves and we had a fantastic time. Whilst I was in the water I felt like a mermaid. By Jua Swimming was such a fun experience, it took me on a wonderful journey through the water language. By Sienna Swimming week was fantastic. It felt like being in a real ocean. I learnt that you can use anything that floats or anything that is long to save someone. I can’t wait until next year to go again. By Zac

OSHC NEWS Children’s Learning at OSHC From 2014, OSHC has been documenting children’s learning in relation to the outcomes of the learning framework My Time, Our Place. The purpose of these reports are to help educators identify children’s development, shape the experiences we plan for children, and give parents information regarding children’s learning. These reports are accessible to parents at any time upon request, and will be distributed via e-mail to families at the end of each term. Parents are welcomed to schedule meetings with the Director during the term to discuss the development and or concerns of their children.

Parent-Educator Meeting It is our goal to make children’s learning and development accessible to families. As a result, OSHC will be holding a parent-educator meeting week on Week 10 (26th to 30th of September) where families can schedule a meeting with OSHC staff to discuss their children’s development. Meetings can be scheduled with Simpson with time slots between 3:00pm to 6:30pm. We look forward to meeting you in week 10. E-mail: [email protected] Contact number: 8336 4980

EMPS SOCCER Senior 20/8/16 East Marden defeated Trinity Gardens A, 7-2. An early shot at goal by the opposition had us worried but we were saved by the offside ruling a no goal. Our boys came straight back with 3 successive goals and gave us a comfortable lead. Daniel showed show great foot skills against an opposition player at least a foot taller. Dylan had great movement of the ball along the outside and almost managed a goal from the back line. Waide headed the ball into goals (1), Roman managed to get out of goals for the match and we were rewarded with (2) and goals also scored by Anik (1), Arsh (2) & Kaleab (1). Thanks to Angus & Prabhnoor for taking the goalie responsibilities for the match. 27/8/16 East Marden drew with St. Joseph’s Hectorville B, 2-2. This was a nail biting match and the pressure game was a brilliant way to finish the minor round. There was an amazing save in goals by the ever reliable Roman who showed great reflexes with an incredible leap that pushed the ball back over the half way line giving Arsh an open field and easy goal. Angus provided us with our second goal. The boys finished the Championship round on top of the ladder and were presented with a trophy at the end of the day’s matches. This is now proudly displayed in the school office for the next 12 months. 3/9/16 East Marden defeated St. Joseph’s Hectorville B, 3-1 in the Semi Final. This put the boys through to the Grand Final on the same day against Norwood which they won 7-0. It was another fabulous team effort with the ball and field time being shared amongst their close knit team of 13. The boys were humble in victory and were presented with the Bill Bell Cup at the end of this match. This trophy is also being displayed in the school office for the next 12 months.

Junior Junior soccer has finished for the year and the team has conducted themselves really well. The players showed great sportsmanship and good team spirit throughout the season. We ended up winning more than we lost and everyone improved overall. Most players had never played a match beyond lunchtime games so there was a lot to learn. We have laid some good groundwork for next year and hope to have everyone back, plus some more soccer enthusiasts, in 2017. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Akash Pattnaik for his time and his wonderfully fair and encouraging approach to coaching the senior team this season. Thanks to all the parents for their support but in particular Mulugeta Kassaw & Darren Rowe for taking the lion’s share of running the line. Thanks also to Jacie Taylor and Marco Carabott for managing and coaching the junior team. Without the commitment from these parents, we can’t put teams together so I appreciate that your dedication is enjoyed by 25 students and their families. Despite a rocky start with barely managing to put 2 teams together, I have enjoyed being part of the soccer community this year and know I am leaving this sport in safe hands as Jacie Taylor takes over co-ordinating for the 2017 season. Look out during term 1 next year for information on joining a team!

Welcome to the 2016/17 cricket season! Training for all grades will be on Thursdays at 3pm, immediately after school, meeting on the oval on the far cricket pitch. The cricket season is played over two terms (Term 4 2016 and Term 1 2017), and the fees are $60 per cricketer for A, B and C Grade, and $30 for Kanga. Fees include a sausage sizzle at the end of each term, and a trophy presentation day at the end of Term 1, 2017 (Year 7’s will receive trophies at the end of Term 4).

Sign up sheets are available at the Front Office. Once teams have been filled, students will be invoiced. Each team will need a parent to coach, a parent to score on the day, and a manager. These roles are really easy and great fun, and I encourage parents to get involved in their child’s sports – it is highly rewarding. We are also not a day-care centre. Don’t expect to just drop your child off, instead stay and support your child and enjoy the morning. Note: Without these roles being filled in your child’s team, the team will be cancelled! The uniform for the senior grades is white cricket pants, white polo, and white wide-brimmed hat; while for Kanga’s is school shorts, school polo, and school bucket hat. All cricketers must have a bottle of water and sunscreen on. Cricket “whites” can be purchased at Best and Less, Rebel Sports, or most other sports store. In 2016 there are new grades introduced, purely as a reflection of age group, not ability. “A Grade”- For Year 6 and 7 cricketers, 8:15am Saturday mornings. Games are 8 players per side, using 142g leather balls, timber bats, and full protective gear – pads, gloves and helmet are mandatory for batters, and gloves and helmet mandatory for wicket keepers. 24 overs per side. Dismissed batters are unable to return, or must retire if they reach 35 runs. Bowlers can bowl a maximum of 4 overs. “B Grade”- For Year 5 and 6 cricketers, 8:15am Saturday mornings. Games are 8 players per side, using 142g leather balls, timber bats, and full protective gear – pads, gloves and helmet are mandatory for batters, and gloves and helmet mandatory for wicket keepers. 20 overs per side. Cricketers bat in pairs for 5 overs, with dismissals resulting in batters swapping ends (batters don’t get “out”). Fielders rotate around all positions, and everyone gets to bowl 2 or 3 overs. “C Grade”- For Year 4 and 5 cricketers, 8:15am Saturday mornings. Games are 8 players per side, played with soft balls, timber bats, and full protective gear – pads, gloves and helmet are all mandatory for batters, and gloves and helmet mandatory for wicket keepers. 16 overs per side. Cricketers bat in pairs for 4 overs, with dismissals resulting in batters swapping ends (batters don’t get “out”). Fielders rotate around all positions, and everyone gets to bowl 2 overs. Kanga—For Year 2 and 3 cricketers.8:30am Saturday mornings. Games are 8 players per side, played with soft rubber balls, and plastic bats and stumps, and last for 16 overs per side. Cricketers bat in pairs for 4 overs, with any dismissals resulting in batters swapping ends (batters don’t get “out”). Fielders rotate around all positions, and everyone gets to bowl 2 overs. All grades are open for both boys and girls to play. If you have any questions about any of the above, or would like to know more, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 0412 265 954. Thanks, Daniel Elsdon EMPS Cricket Coordinator
