Mission: To use creative arts to expose youth to new opportunities

Give the children a sense of hope, self-esteem, and love that will better the world...I think making a difference in the lives of others is life’s greatest purpose. The Common Ground Foundation was founded by Hip-Hop Artist/Actor/Author Lonnie Rashid Lynn, known as COMMON. More than 12 years ago, COMMON committed his time and resources to touch the lives of underserved youth in his hometown, Chicago. Impacting hundreds of youth each year, the work of the Foundation has included online book clubs, one-on-one mentoring, after-school and summer programming, and opportunities to support other organizations in Chicago, as well as Common’s volunteer work across the country. In August 2012, the Common Ground Foundation hosted its first annual Common’s Dreamers & Believers Summer Youth Camp at Anokijig Camp

in Plymouth, WI, for 25 selected students, ages 13-15, from Chicago Public Schools (CPS). The curriculum for this week-long experience focused on “developing the whole child,” which included character development, healthy lifestyle choices, High School readiness skills, careers in the creative arts and beyond. In June 2013, the Summer Youth Camp expanded to 40 students for a week-long experience at Camp Lakotah in Wautoma, Wisconsin. While the camp is rich with developmental experiences, it also allows students the rare occasion to “unplug” and “enjoy being a kid,” without the daily cares that often accompany living in Chicago.

The curriculum development for the Foundation is led by Dr. Mahalia Hines, a former CPS Teacher, Principal and a current member of the Chicago Board of Education. Dr. Hines is also President of the Common Ground Foundation. Following camp, each student is automatically enrolled in the year-round mentoring program, which pairs students with both a coach and a mentor for on-going support, helping students succeed in high school honors and college preparatory programming while shoring up their interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

encouraging them to embrace their creative voice, and to love and support one another as the key to overcoming any obstacles in life. Common Ground Foundation was recognized by CNN Heroes and BET Hip Hop Awards as a philanthropic organization doing great work in urban communities.

Once students join the Common Ground Foundation, they have an opportunity to remain enrolled for three consecutive years. This allows the coaches and students to create meaningful bonds and increases the impact the program has on the students and their families. The monthly mentoring program meets at the Ray & Joan Kroc Center on Chicago’s south side. These sessions range from group talks about solutions for combating violence in Chicago, to role-playing how to handle difficult situations that they might confront in school, to sharing study tips, and of course, always celebrating “good news” updates. CGF has a dedicated team of volunteer coaches and instructors who are helping make a difference, one child at a time. Common’s personal commitment to the Foundation is both in spirit and deed, as he donates significant time to attend summer camps and to join mentoring sessions throughout the year. CALL TO ACTION A request for private and public sectors to focus on creating Year-Round jobs for youth, extending current Summer Jobs initiatives.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT REDUCES CRIME Unemployment has long been associated with increases in criminal activity, and studies show working youth are less likely to engage in delinquent activities. Research has shown that reductions in criminal activity are more significant when youth employment programs offer job opportunities that are of a sufficient length. Chicago youth are significantly underemployed and lack connections to employers providing year-long job opportunities. While summer jobs programs provide important opportunities, once the summer ends, youth employment typically ends, too. Chicago youth need advocates committed to organizing government, nonprofit and for profit stakeholders, pushing for funding and resources and calling for services to address youth employment needs. A unified strategy recognizes the need for collective action. A strong, youth-centered movement focuses on getting young people aged 16-24 years old to work. Common Ground Foundation, Chicago Urban League, and a host of organizations around the city are joining forces to raise awareness of the connection between youth jobs and reductions in violence in Chicago, and calling on public and private sector to join the movement for creating and extending thousands of year-long youth jobs. Meaning & Symbols

The Common Ground Foundation award depicts a young boy standing on a brick foundation while reaching for a key. The key is used to symbolize access. It symbolizes access to internal power through self-knowledge; access to programs that provide positive influences; and access to the many doors of opportunity that might otherwise be locked to urban youth. The bricks represent an underlying support system -- a platform that places the boy within reach of the key needed to unlock his potential. The initials on the cornerstone brick represent the Common Ground foundation’s commitment to providing programs that will allow young people to access these crucial keys. Nyjah Huston Professional Skateboarder and Community Activist

N

yjah Huston is an American street skater who has fought his way to the top and continues to push the limits of what is possible on a skateboard. Since learning to skate at the age of 5, Nyjah has eaten, lived, and breathed skateboarding. He has had all eyes on him since he burst onto the skate scene at the young age of 9 and won the legendary Tampa Am event at only 10 years old. By the age of 11, Nyjah had become the youngest ever X Games competitor. He went on to earn multiple X Games Gold medals and Street League Championship titles. Nyjah’s consistency and distinguished skills make him the one to beat as he relentlessly skates his way to the top of worldclass skateboard competitions.

yjah’s real passion for skateboarding can be found out in the streets, where he continues to blow minds with his innovative bag of tricks performed on some of the most dangerous stairs and rails in cities throughout the world. At only 19 years old, he has already filmed six full-length video parts. His most recent video, Fade to Black, produced by footwear sponsor DC Shoes, was released in November, 2013, and it reminded all skate fans that Nyjah is a true street skater at heart. His determination and amazing talent on a skateboard is mind-blowing and shows what is really possible when he puts mind over matter.

yjah’s professional skateboard career is just one example of him taking the road less traveled. He has also lived in exotic, remote places, often foregoing modern conveniences

like electricity and running water. Enriched and enlightened by these experiences, Nyjah and his family launched a charity called Let It Flow, dedicated to bringing clean, safe water and sanitation to extremely poor communities. His family’s willingness to live their lives “outside the box” has not only inspired his career but has provided an opportunity to make a difference, changing entire communities, one well at a time.

yjah’s career as a professional street skater is expected to evolve and progress, and leaves us asking, “What will he do next?” There is no doubt that he will continue to push the limits of skateboarding and become one of the greatest legends to ever step onto a board, while his compassion for humanity will be an inspiration for future generations to make a difference through a life of service.

Nnamdi Asomugha Former NFL Athlete and Chairman The Asomugha Foundation

GLOBAL IMPACT AWARD

N

namdi Asomugha is a former All-Pro NFL defensive back from Los Angeles, California. Nnamdi began his professional football career with the Oakland Raiders after being selected in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft. A four-time All-Pro selection, Asomugha emerged as one of the League’s best defensive backs, earning him starting positions in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Pro Bowls. During the 2011 off season, Asomugha was considered the top free agent on the market, and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated after signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. On December 27, 2013, Nnamdi signed a one-day contract with the Oakland Raiders and retired after 11 seasons in the NFL. Prior to joining the NFL, he was a standout free safety at the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with a degree in Corporate Finance.

ducation and philanthropy have always been paramount in the Asomugha family which is why, in 2010, they formally established The Asomugha Foundation, a 501c(3) whose mission is to positively impact disadvantaged youth in the U.S. and underprivileged orphans and widows in Africa through education and empowerment. The Foundation supports two key programs: Orphans and Widows In Need (OWIN) and Asomugha College Tour for Scholars (ACTS). OWIN was founded by Nnamdi’s mother, Dr. Lilian Asomugha in 2005, and works to position widows and orphans in Africa for economic success and independence through education, spiritual guidance and vocational training.

I

n 2007, Nnamdi founded ACTS, an annual college tour and mentorship program designed to inspire high-achieving high school students from underprivileged communities to pursue higher education. Each year as part of the program, Nnamdi takes a group of students to a different U.S. city where they visit the local colleges and universities and experience the city. Since the program began, Nnamdi has taken students to visit college campuses in Atlanta, Boston, New York City, New Orleans, Chicago, Washington D.C., San Francisco and Los Angeles. In April 2014, Nnamdi will take a group of 20 students to see schools in Philadelphia and New York City.

A

side from his work with The Asomugha Foundation, Nnamdi is also deeply involved with the United Way and is the first professional athlete to sit on their Board of Trustees. During his NFL career, Nnamdi was the national ambassador for the NFL and United Way partnership, and he served as the head of TEAM NFL, a group of players charged with recruiting volunteers in their respective communities to help combat the high school drop-out rate.

namdi has consistently used his platform as a professional athlete to enact positive change in the community and has been honored for his work with the NFL Players Association’s Byron ‘Whizzer’ White Award, The Jefferson Award for Public Service, and the President’s Volunteer Service Award, to name a few. He is highly respected for his service to the community, and as a result, has been invited to speak at events alongside President Barack Obama, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and Former President Bill Clinton.

I

ssues concerning the Black community had always been a priority for Jacoby Dickens, and together with the commitment of his wife Veranda, they have transformed communities as entrepreneurs, philanthropists and donor activists. As part of a lifetime of catalyzing people, Jacoby and Veranda Dickens have collectively participated in over twenty active civic and philanthropic organizations, including the Chicago Urban League, Chicago United, Chicago State University

Foundation, Link Unlimited, and the History Makers. Additionally, Mr. Dickens demonstrated his dedication to the community when in 1983, the late Mayor Harold Washington sought and received his leadership as chairman of the Committee to Elect Harold Washington.

E

lected to the Board of Seaway National Bank in 1979, Jacoby Dickens served as vice chairman until 1983, when he was

elected Chairman of the Board. Because Seaway was initially created to counter the discriminatory lending practices on the Southside of Chicago, the vision of the bank would remain consistent with the life work of Mr. Dickens. He served as Board Chairman until his passing in 2013. By the end of that year, the bank had secured more than $555,000,000 in assets and almost 300 employees; a testament to his strong leadership and dedication to both his work and his community.

P

rior to joining Seaway, Jacoby spent 14 years as an engineer with the Chicago Board of Education. He embarked on his entrepreneurial career by investing in real estate in the communities in which he lived and gave support. He later acquired part ownership of a bowling and recreation center. At one time, his total number of bowling facilities ranked him as the country’s number one Black proprietor. His business interests also included part ownership of two television stations.

rs. Dickens has continued the legacy of commitment, leadership and business acumen established by her husband, Jacoby. She now serves as Director and principal shareholder of Seaway Bank and Trust Company, one of the largest Black-owned banks in the country, complete with an intentional focus on reinvestment in its customers and local businesses. Mrs. Dickens states that, “Our mission remains to help minority professional and entrepreneurs obtain the financial assistance they need and to be responsive to the credit needs of our community.”

V

eranda Dickens has committed her professional career to public service, serving as the Executive Director of the Township of Evanston; the Executive Director of the Peter Claver Center; the Director of the Will County Community Action Council; and in leadership capacities at Joint Action in Community Service, where she trained volunteers throughout the Midwest to serve as advisors to young men who were former Job Corp participants. Veranda is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Fisher Island Philanthropic Fund, and a former member of the Links Incorporated.

LIFETIME TRAILBLAZER AWARD

A

ctor, producer and humanitarian Danny Glover has been a commanding presence on screen, stage and television for more than 25 years. As an actor, his film credits range from the blockbuster Lethal Weapon franchise to smaller independent features, some of which Glover also produced. In recent years, he has starred in an array of motion pictures, including the criticallyacclaimed Dreamgirls, directed by Bill Condon, and in the futuristic 2012 for director Roland Emmerich. In addition to his film work, Glover is highly sought after as a public speaker, delivering inspiring addresses and moving performances in such diverse venues as college campuses, union rallies and business conventions.

G

lover has gained respect for his wide-reaching community activism and philanthropic efforts, with a particular emphasis on advocacy for economic justice and access to health care

and education programs in the United States and Africa. For these efforts, Glover received a 2006 DGA Honor and was honored with a 2011 “Pioneer Award” from the National Civil Rights Museum. Internationally, Glover served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program from 1998-2004, focusing on issues of poverty, disease and economic development in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Glover was presented in 2011 with the prestigious Médaille des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture and was honored with a Tribute at the Deauville International Film Festival. Currently Glover serves as UNICEF Ambassador.

n 2005, Glover cofounded New Yorkbased Louverture Films with writer/producer Joslyn Barnes and recent partners Susan Rockefeller and Matthew Palevsky. The company is dedicated to the development and production of films of historical relevance, social purpose, commercial value and artistic integrity. Among the films Glover has executive produced

Myrid at Louverture are: the Césarnominated Bamako, Sundance Grand Jury Prize and Oscar and Emmy nominated Trouble The Water, the award winning The Black Power Mixtape 19671975, Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner The House I Live In, and the award winning Concerning Violence. He has also associate produced Elia Suleiman’s The Time That Remains, and the 2010 Cannes Palme d’Or winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives.

A

native of San Francisco, Glover trained at the Black Actors’ Workshop of the American Conservatory Theatre. It was his Broadway debut in Fugard’s Master Harold…and the Boys that brought him to national recognition and led director Robert Benton to cast him in his first leading role in 1984’s Academy Award-nominated Best Picture, Places in the Heart. The following year, Glover starred in two more Best Picture nominated films: Peter Weir’s Witness and Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple. In 1987, Glover partnered with Mel Gibson in the first Lethal Weapon film and went on to star in three hugely successful Lethal Weapon sequels. Glover also starred in The Royal Tenenbaums and To Sleep With Anger, which he executive produced, and for which he won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor.

O

n the small screen, Glover won an Image Award, a Cable ACE Award and earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the title role of the HBO Movie Mandela. He has also received Emmy nominations for his work in the acclaimed miniseries Lonesome Dove, the telefilm Freedom Song, and as a director he earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Showtime’s Just a Dream. Most recently, Glover appeared in the HBO Original Movie, Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight.

resently, Glover has completed roles in the feature films Tokarev, co-starring Nicolas Cage, and the drama Blackbird, costarring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker.
