COMING EVENTS Saturday, October 19 Will Work for Wine

Saturday, November 9 35th Tri-Cities Wine Festival

Sunday, December 8 Holiday Party & Scholarship Fundraiser

35th Tri-Cities Wine Festival Dolly Ammann Member, TCWS Board of Directors

Tickets are NOW ON SALE for the 35th Annual Tri-Cities Wine Festival on Saturday, November 9, Toyota Center box office. You can also buy your tickets online from Ticketmaster. Because you will pay more in fees through Ticketmaster, I recommend purchasing tickets at the box office or at the door. Would you like to participate in the festival as a volunteer? It is fun to be involved! We need volunteers to help with handing out wine glasses and brochures; signing up new Society members; meeting and greeting attendees; and helping out with the silent auction. All that is required is 30 to 60 minutes of your time either in advance or during the festival. Also, Society President Ted Davis hosts a volunteer party at his home on the Wednesday evening before the festival, November 6, when you can meet our wine judges and other volunteers. Interested in volunteering? Contact Mary Binder (Ph: 509-585-1393 or email [email protected]) or Dolly Ammann (Ph: 509-420-4712 or email [email protected]). If you previously have not attended the festival, here is what to expect:  The event is 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. (As it could be cold outside, the doors to the Three Rivers Convention Center open early, at 5:30 p.m.)  Wine Society members can gain access to the Great Hall, where all the winery and exhibitor booths are located, at 6:00 p.m., ahead of the general public.  All attendees must be 21 or over. Bring your photo ID as proof because you cannot get in without it.  A coat room is available.

Wine Trivia

Multi-State Wine Appellations Did you know there are 4 multi-state appellations in the Pacific Northwest? Most think appellations are small in geographic size, but this not necessarily true. The Columbia Valley appellation, established in 1984, is 11 million acres in size, takes up a third of Washington and spills over Washington State borders into Oregon. The Columbia Gorge appellation, established in 2004, begins around the town of Lyle and heads west to Husum on the Washington side of the Columbia River, and also spills over into Oregon. The Walla Walla appellation, established in 1984, is in the southeast corner of Washington and into Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Covering 8,263 square miles and established in 2007, the fourth appellation is the Snake River Valley in southwestern Idaho and southeastern Oregon. (Excerpted from Wine Press Northwest, 2001)

A Short History of the Wine Barrel Ancient Greeks and Italians began shipping wine in fragile amphorae and graduated to palm-wood many years ago. But with the coming of the Iron Age, northern Europeans developed the wooden barrel for transporting goods and wine. This has given way to almost exclusively using them for wine production today. A barrel is traditionally referred to as a keg when empty and cask when full. A generally agreed to assumption relates the volume of the barrel to the amount of grapes harvested from a set piece of land. Then, there are style names such as Borgogne, Bordeaux, Hogshead and Puncheon! (Excerpted from http://www.uncok.biz/ tidbits4.htm)

Wine Quotations 

MacDuff: What three things does drink provoke? Porter: Marry, sir, nose-painting, sleep and urine. Lechery, sir, it provokes and unprovokes: it provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance. (Shakespeare, Macbeth, Act 2, Scene 3,1.26-30)

Last month I had to offer my publisher a bottle that was far too good for him, simply because there was nothing between the insulting and the superlative. (A.J. Liebing, Between Meals)

Wine Definitions 

Acidity: A crisp, acidic quality noted in wine. Can be a positive or negative quality.

 

The tip of a red wine glass is sloped inward to capture the aromas of the wine and deliver them to your nose. (beekmanwine.com/factsquotes.htm)

The average age of a French oak tree harvested for use in wine barrels is 170 years. (beekmanwine.com/factsquotes.htm) 

Wine Science Center Groundbreaking Above, Wine Society President Ted Davis and a wellknown Washington pioneer vintner, Dick Boushey, reminisce about how far the state’s wine industry has come in the past 30 years. Both attended the WSU Wine Science Center groundbreaking ceremony at WSU, Thursday, September 26, along with more than 200 state and community leaders, WSU regents and staff, wine industry representatives, Wine Science Center supporters, and others. Referencing the new center, Washington Governor Jay Inslee said, “It is a great marriage of two things we believe in, wine and research.” He went on to say we’ll “grow the wine economy like nowhere else on planet earth in the next two decades.” WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor H. Keith Moo-Young said the center will be “a world-class, state-of-the-art, research facility.” Dr. Thomas Henick-Kling, WSU Viticulture & Enology director and professor of enology, said he came to WSU in 2009 because of his “great admiration for Washington wines” and the “deep commitment here for working together and doing better.” Before officials put the gold shovels to use, WSU Regent Ted Baseler, and president and CEO of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, said, “This [project] is truly a great combination of creativity, energy and finances.” Further highlighting this, Steve Warner, Washington Wine Commission executive director, said in just 4 years, the wine industry’s economic impact to the state has “nearly tripled.” It is now at $8.6B and the goal is $25B by 2020. “Amazing” and “untouchable” … two words Steve used to describe the wine industry’s future in Washington. He added, “If we’re this good now [in just 30 years], where will we be, how good will we be in another 30 years!” 

Open That Bottle Night 15 February 23

Taste Back: French Country Pique-Nique Members, TCWS Program Committee

A special “thank you” to hosts Candace and Paul Gifford for all their efforts in again planning and hosting the Society’s annual picnic. Yes, much work, we know! The French-style recipes were all prepared by Candace and Paul, and included a potato salad that was the favorite of Julia Child’s husband. Each course was accompanied by both a French wine and a domestic wine. And, from reports received, Saturday afternoon, September 7, was beautiful for the “French Country Pique-Nique” in the Giffords backyard at their picturesque Red Mountain home. So again, a special “merci beaucoup” to the Giffords! It was a great way to end the summer.

Yes, with fall having just arrived, Halloween and Thanksgiving still a ways away, let alone Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year, it may be too early for some to be thinking about February, BUT for those liking to plan ahead – mark your 2014 calendars for Sunday, February 23, and Open That Bottle Night 15. Yes, this popular and typically soldout event at The Country Gentleman is again returning! For those new to the Society and/or not familiar with this event, this will be the Society’s fifth year participating in this worldwide event started 15 years ago by former Wall Street Journal writers John Brecher and Dorothy Gaiter. It is an opportunity for attendees to bring a bottle of wine and share stories about their wine. It is also a great opportunity to share some special wines, learn why and when they were purchased, learn how they were stored, and more. Does it have to be an expensive wine? No. Does it need to be something you believe others would enjoy, and that you want and would be pleased to share? Yes. Along with the wines, there will be food to complement a variety of wines. So, back by popular demand – Open that Bottle Night 15. More details to follow in future EVOEs, including time and menu! Meanwhile, Happy Fall!
