To Help You

To the Leaders/Teachers

Thank you for your willingness to do this work for God. It is a very responsible work to lead our children to know God as a personal Friend. May He richly bless your influence on all those who sit in your class. • The age for Kindy children is 4-6 years. • Study the program carefully. Carefully prepare all the teaching aids. • All text in italics is for the teacher to say. • Be sure to learn the songs for each week. • Prepare an offering chart and offering container. • Make a list of the children’s birthdays. Use a birthday device & cards. • Decorate your room – make it interesting and attractive. • Practice telling the lesson story till you can do it well. • Ask other adults to TELL the mission story. Keep it short. • Use maxiPraise songs that suit the topic. • Keep the program moving. Do the readiness activity and then move straight into Prayer and Praise. Only sing a few songs. • Debriefing is the new word for what we used to call Thinking Time. Use questions to find out what the children have learned and what they should do about it. • Build up sets of things the children will use often, for example: Tool set: hammer, saw, axe, brushes, etc. Helping set: broom, rake, scrubbing brush, tea towel, etc. Animal set: large toys you can use as decorations or for songs. Doll set: Stick dolls or baby in blanket. These can be cut from carton box bought at second-hand shops • REMEMBER - Pray lots, be prepared, be early on Sabbath morning, love the children and you will all have a great learning time.

A Child Like Me Lesson 1

SERVICE Jesus sets an example of service for us

References Luke 2:39, 40, 51, 52. Memory Verse “Then he went down to Nazareth and was obedient”. Luke 2:51. OBJECTIVES: The children will: Know that being helpful and obedient means they are growing like Jesus grew. Feel they want to be helpful and obedient. Respond by doing helpful things and obeying their parents. THE MESSAGE We are like Jesus when we obey and help. This is a Lesson About Service As a child, Jesus was always ready to help and obey His parents. We want to be children like Jesus was. We can learn from Jesus how to obey and to help others.

Room Decorations Set up the front of the room so it looks like a Bible-times home with a small table, a water pot, a sleeping mat and pillow, some carpenter’s tools.

1. READINESS ACTIVITY My Growing-up Chart  Needed: height charts, pen and colours, measuring tape or ruler. Use the pattern supplied in the Helps to make a chart for each child. The children may colour them as you are busy measuring each child and marking their height on their chart. Also fill in their birth date. These charts need to be kept for the year and their height measured at the beginning of each Quarter. Fasten them to the wall or make a special board for them so they are part of the room 6…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

decorations. Use their birth date to help you know when you have birthdays to celebrate. Debriefing  You are growing each year just as Jesus did. We have marked on your chart just how tall you are now. At the beginning of each new Quarter this year, we will measure you again to see how much you have grown. Today we are learning about little boy Jesus. He always obeyed his Mama and Papa. He loved to help them, too. Do you obey cheerfully like Jesus did? Do you like to help other people? What can you do to help other people? Today’s message is:  We are like Jesus when we obey and help.  Say it with me. Finger Play  Hold up one hand and with the other point to a finger for each line. You can say it in pidgin, too. Jesus is happy when I obey. My angel is happy when I obey Papa is happy when I obey. Mama is happy when I obey I am happy when I obey. (Repeat using the word “help” instead of “obey”).

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to everyone, especially the visitors. Song  Welcome, Welcome Everyone  Child of the King 5 Praise Time  Choose a Sabbath Song and one or two others. Here are some suggestions for this month: With Jesus in the Family  LVPH 273 Things Jesus Liked When He Was A Child  LVPH 139 We are Little Helpers  LVPH 296 Jesus was a Helper  LVPH 295 Obedient  LVPH 270 Prayer Time  Use Prayer Song  “I Have Hands that Clap”  (LVPH 215) to prepare the children to pray. Sometimes have the children pray. Sometimes they will repeat your prayer. Remember to make use of the message for the week in your prayers. Mission Time  Use a story from “Children’s Mission” (free from your local Mission). An offering chart based on the place where the 13th Sabbath offering is going will make this part of the program more relevant to the children. Offering  Be sure to prepare, and make use of, a special offering container that suits the place where the offering is going this Quarter. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…7

Sing offering song  Here is My Money for Jesus  LVPH 32. Birthdays  Work hard at getting the birth dates of all your class members. Write them on the growth charts (page 90), then a glance will tell you if you need to have this Birthday Segment in your program this week. Keep it short. Sing birthday song. Collect the birthday offering. Pray for the child. Give them a simple card. Song  Count Birthday Money  LVPH 37

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour the verse in your Bible. Place a marker in the page so a child can open the Bible and point to the verse. Read it aloud, pointing to each word. Use these actions to teach the verse: Then He - point upward went down to Nazareth - drop hand with palm up and was obedient - open hands out from waist Luke 2, verse 51 - palms together, then open Song  Tune  I’m Glad I came to Sabbath School  LVPH 5 Then He went down to Nazareth Then He went down to Nazareth Then He went down to Nazareth And was obedient. (Say) Luke 2 verse 51. Experiencing the Story  Needed: Bible-times costume for story-teller, Bible scroll. The storyteller is dressed as Mary. When Mary tells what Jesus did to help, have the children act it out. Prepare to tell the story well. Good morning! My name is Mary. I am Jesus’ mother. Do you know that Jesus was once a Kindy kid, just like you? Let’s do a finger play together that tells us about Him: When Jesus was a little boy -hold hand out to indicate height He looked a lot like me -point to self He had two eyes -point to eyes He had two ears -point to ears and scratches on his knees -point to knees Sometimes he liked to run and play -run in place Sometimes he helped cook dinner -pretend to peel kaukau Sometimes he hammered nails with Papa -hammer one fist with the other 8…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

or fed the animals. -pretend to put food on floor. When evening came, -kneel together He knelt to pray‚ And sang to God above -stand, point upwards Then turning to His family He thanked them for their love -fold arms across chest Every day I taught Him about God. I told Him Bible stories about Adam and Eve, about Noah and the big flood, about David and Goliath. He always sat and listened carefully. I taught him to pray. What do you think Jesus did and said when He prayed? He would kneel down like this (encourage children to kneel) and He said something like “Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me. Amen.” We sang songs about God together. Jesus loved to sing. What is your favourite song? Jesus and I liked to go for nature walks  (walk in place).  We listened to the birds sing  (hand behind ear).  We watched beetles climb over logs, and we saw spiders spin their webs. Have you ever watched that? We walked bare foot through dew on the grass and we watched the animals play. What kind of animals do you think Jesus saw? We looked at the beautiful colours in the sky when the sun was setting. We talked about the beautiful world that God had made for us to enjoy. Little Jesus was so happy to look at everything God had made in this big, beautiful world. We didn’t have very much money. We lived in a small house, but little Jesus loved to help me keep it clean. What kind of things do you think He did?  (Encourage children to follow your actions).  He helped set the table. He helped dry the dishes. He rolled up his sleeping mat. He carried in the water pot. He helped me in the kitchen peeling the kaukau for dinner. Whenever I asked Him to help, He ran to do it with a smile on his face. Little Jesus loved to help me. Jesus also loved to help Papa Joseph. How do you think He helped him? Well Jesus helped care for our little donkey. He fed him and gave him water to drink  (Ask children to do the actions).  Joseph was a carpenter, so Jesus often helped him hammer or saw, and he used a broom to sweep up all the sawdust. Little Jesus also helped other people. He was kind to our neighbours and the other children in the village. He carried firewood for the old people, He helped sad people to smile and he was kind to children who hurt themselves or were crying. People loved to see his smiling face and to hear his happy songs. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…9

Little Jesus had time to play, too, just like you do. He played games with the other little boys. They liked to play with Him because he was always kind and liked to give them turns. But when it was time to come in and I called him, little Jesus was always obedient and came running with a smile on His face. Every Friday evening we ate a special meal to welcome the Sabbath. We set the table carefully, and Jesus loved to help light the special Sabbath candles. Then He listened quietly as Joseph prayed and talked about God. Jesus loved my cooking. He knew that healthy food would help him grow taller and stronger. On Sabbath we took Jesus to church. He heard the preacher read from the books of the Bible. In those days the Bible was not a book. It was written on scrolls which were long pieces of paper rolled up on two sticks  (show your scroll).  Jesus listened carefully to the words from the scroll. He learned His memory verses, lots of them, and He used to sing them as he was helping around the house or in Joseph’s workshop. Can you sing your memory verse with me right now? It always made us happy to hear him singing. Yes, Jesus was a very special little boy, just like you children are special. We loved Him very much, just like your parents love you  (give yourself a hug).  And He made us very happy because He liked to obey and be a good helper. Song  Things Jesus liked when He was a child  LVPH 139. Debriefing  What did Jesus do to help at home? How did He help outside His home? Why was He always happy to help? Do you think He ever complained about having to be obedient? How do you act when you are asked to do something? How could you learn to be more obedient and helpful?  (By asking Jesus to help).  Remember:  We are like Jesus when we obey and help.  Say that with me. Bible Study  Use a version of the Bible the children can best understand. Place a marker in Luke 2 so a child can find it and open to the story for today. Point to the verses as you read aloud (Luke 2:39, 40, 51, 52). Jesus grew just as you are growing. He was kind, obedient, loving and helpful to others. How could He be like this? It was because He often asked God to help Him. We can do that, too. God wants us to be happy, obedient helpers. What are some ways that we can grow like Jesus did? Remember, we are like Jesus when we obey and help.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON We Obey and Help  Needed: A basket or bag filled with these objects; 10…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

a toy, a pillow, cup, picture or soft toy cat or dog, plate and fork, piece of firewood, flower, soap. As children take an item from the bag, ask them to tell you how that item could be used to obey and help others. Toy - pick up toys OR share toys Pillow - make bed OR go to sleep when asked Cup - give someone a drink Cat or dog - feed the pets, treat them kindly Spoon & bowl - set table or wash dishes Firewood - collect firewood Flower - give it to someone who is sick or sad Soap - wash hands OR help Mama wash the baby Debriefing  Do you obey your parents quickly and with a smile? Or are you slow and grumpy about it? Which way do you think Jesus obeyed? Which way would Mama/Papa like you to obey? Do you ever help without waiting to be asked to do it? You know, you see something needs to be done, like setting the table while Mama is busy cooking, and you just do it to give her a lovely surprise? She will love to get that kind of a surprise. Maybe you can try it this week. Remember,  We are like Jesus when we obey and help. Finger Play  So Do I! You read the first part with actions and children respond by repeating “and so do I”. Little Jesus helped His Mama set the table, And so do I. And so do I Little Jesus slept in a little bed Hands folded by head, eyes closed And so do I . And so do I Little Jesus asked God to bless His food Fold hands in prayer And so do I. And so do I Little Jesus liked to walk with his Papa Walk in place And so do I. And so do I Little Jesus went to church on Sabbath Fold arms, sit straight And so do I. And so do I Little Jesus brought an offering to church Pretend to put money In other hand And so do I. And so do I. I want to be like Jesus Point to self, then upwards And so do I. And so do I. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…11

5. SHARING THE LESSON Good Helper House  Make up the helper house (see page 92 & 93). Have each child open a window and see how they can help at home this week. Ask them to be ready to give a report next Sabbath. Debriefing  It really is fun to be a happy helper. Tell your parents about the special work you are going to do this week. See if you can remember to do it without being asked. If it is something you have not done before, it is okay to ask Mama or Papa to help you so you can do it well. And remember to ask Jesus to help you, too. He loves to help. Do you think the people you help will be happy? And don’t forget that   We are like Jesus when we obey and help.

6. CLOSING Sing  The memory verse. This week remember that you are growing up just as Jesus did. You can be obedient and helpful to others just as Jesus was. Let’s pray now and ask Him to help you be like Him. Closing Prayer Goodbye Song  It’s Time to Go  Child of the King 16 Remind the children that when boy Jesus went to church He sat quietly and listened to the speaker. If they go to the toilet and have a drink before going into church, they will be able to sit till after the service is finished.

Daddy’s Helper Lesson 2

SERVICE Jesus sets an example of service for us

REFERENCES Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3. MEMORY VERSE “Even a child is known by his actions.” Proverbs 20:11. OBJECTIVES: The children will: Know they can be happy helpers every day. Feel comfortable about loving to help others. Respond by doing their best at whatever they are asked to do. THE MESSAGE We serve God when we do our best work. This is a Lesson About Service God wants us to always do our best work. By obeying and helping our parents and by doing our work carefully and happily we make our home a happy place for everyone.

Room Decorations Leave as for last week, but make the table look like a carpenter’s bench by placing tools and some pieces of wood on it. Have a broom in the corner.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  Choose one activity, a or b a. Carpenters Shop  Provide blocks, builder’s off cuts of wood, clay or playdough and ask the children to build something. It could even be a sheet or blanket they could drape over the table, some chairs or seats, then call it their cubby house to hide inside. Let them do the work. Talk about how Jesus’ father was a carpenter and taught him how to build things. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…13

Debriefing  What did you build? Is that something that boy Jesus might have helped to build? Do you help at home? How does it make you feel when you help someone? Do you like to do your very best work? Or are you sometimes a bit lazy? Do you think boy Jesus always did his best work? How do you feel when you do your very best work? Today’s message is  We serve God when we do our best work.  Say it with me.

OR b. Do Your Best  Provide each child with paper and crayons. Ask them to draw a picture of anything they like, but they are to do their very best work. Debriefing  Let’s see the pictures you drew. Did you do your very best? I can see you have been working very hard. How do you feel when you do your very best and it turns out well? Jesus did His very best work in everything He did. Today’s message is:  We serve God when we do our best work.  Say it with me.

Offering  Be sure to prepare, and make use of, a special offering 14…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

container that suits the place where the offering is going this Quarter. Sing offering song  Here is My Money for Jesus  LVPH 32. Birthdays  Work hard at getting the birth dates of all your class members. Write them on the growth charts, then a glance will tell you if you need to have this Birthday Segment in your program this week. Keep it short. Sing birthday song. Collect the birthday offering. Pray for the child. Give them a simple card. Song  Count Birthday Money  LVPH 37

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour Proverbs 20:11 in your Bible and place a marker there so a child can find the verse for you. Read the text aloud then teach it to the class using these actions: Even a child - place hands to show a small child’s height Is known - point to forehead By his actions - clap hands Proverbs 20:11 - palms together, then open like a book Experiencing the Story  Needed: some kind of hammers, saws and brooms, for the children to hold; a stone axe; a picture of a plough. Ask them to hold their tool quietly till you talk about it during the story, then they can pretend to use it. Practice your story till you can tell it well. Jesus’ father, Joseph, was a carpenter. Do you know what a carpenter does? He is a person who builds or fixes things made of wood. Joseph had a workshop near his house. He built furniture in his shop. What kind of furniture do you think He made? I think He would have made strong tables and chairs and stools. He also made tools. What is a tool? It is something you use to help you do a job. Each of you is holding some kind of tool. A hammer is a tool, so is a saw and a broom. A spade and an axe and a screwdriver are also tools. Some of our tools are bought ones. Some tools we can make ourselves. Joseph made good tools in his workshop. He made most of them from stone and wood, like the old people used to do here in PNG  (show stone axe and talk about how it was made). Joseph made big tools, too, like this plough  (show picture).  Do you know what a plough is used for? It is a tool to dig up the ground to plant food crops. The farmer would use a donkey to pull the plough as He held the handles and poked it in the ground. Now we use a tractor, but where the land is steep we still use a spade to dig the ground. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…15

Joseph taught Jesus how to do carpenter’s work. He showed him how to use a hammer to drive a nail into the wood. All of you who have hammers can show me how well you can hammer. When Jesus was older, Joseph taught him how to use a saw to cut wood  (those with saws pretend to use them).  The wood was often heavy so Jesus grew strong muscles from lifting it. Do you have strong muscles? Show me. Jesus had to use a lot of sharp tools in the carpenter’s shop, so He was very careful when He did his work. When Jesus got bigger, Joseph let him build things by himself. Jesus always put All the tools away when He was finished. And He always helped to clean up. He would sweep up all the mess at the end of the day  (children with brooms can sweep). Jesus loved his Papa and Mama. He was happy when He could help them. He liked helping Joseph in the carpenter shop. He liked helping Mary around the house. They were so happy to have such a good helper. And whatever work Jesus was asked to do, He did his very best. It makes me happy when you help me. What kind of things can you do to help? You can bring flowers and put them in a bottle of water to make our room look nice. You can bring me things. Even when you sit quietly and listen you are being a helper. And your smiley, happy faces help me, too. Helping and doing your best work makes you grow up big and strong like Jesus did. Song  Tune - Here is the Way We Walk to Church LVPH 186: Use toy hammers and saws or do actions. This is the way we hammer a nail, hammer a nail, hammer a nail This is the way we hammer a nail, just like Jesus did. This is the way we saw the wood… This is the way we sweep the floor… Debriefing  What did Joseph teach Jesus to do in the carpenter shop? What do you think Jesus did to help his mother? How did Jesus look when He did his work?  (Happy, busy).  Is it important to do a job well? Who wants to do good work like Jesus did? Hands up! Remember:  We serve God when we do our best work.  Say it with me. Bible Study  Use a version of the Bible the children can best understand. Place markers at both Matthew 13:55 and Mark 6:3. Have children find the verses. Read them aloud. 16…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

What kind of work did Jesus’ father do? Did Jesus have brothers and sisters? Jesus belonged to a family just like you do. He helped at home and learned to do new things. In whatever He did, He always did his best work, so Mary and Joseph were very pleased. Can you remember our memory verse? Let’s say it together.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON What Would Jesus Do? Today our Bible story is about how Jesus helped people when He was a boy. I am going to read you some questions. If what I say is something you think Jesus would do, make a “thumbs up” sign  (meaning yes).  If it is something Jesus would not do, make a “thumbs-down” sign  (meaning no; demonstrate with your thumb). What would Jesus Do? 1. Pull a pussy’s tail. 2. Come when his Mama called. 3. Help his Papa by sweeping the carpenter shop. 4. Laugh when a child fell down. 5. Take flowers to a sick person. 6. Help carry food to a hungry person. 7. Say “No” when asked to go to bed. 8. Run in and out of big church at service time. Debriefing  Do you think Jesus always obeyed and helped others? Do you like helping others? When you help, do you do your very best work? How do you feel when you try to do your very best work? What do you do to help others? Do you want to be like Jesus? Remember,  We serve God when we do our best work.  Say it with me. Song  Things Jesus Liked When He Was A Child  LVPH 139

5. SHARING THE LESSON Helping House  Use the same device from last week. Encourage them to tell how they got along with their job this past week. Help the children choose a different job to do for the next week by opening one of the windows. Remind them that if it is something they have not done before, it is good if they ask someone to help them at first. Debriefing  What are some of the ways we are going to help at home this week? Who is going to try and do their job really well?  (Hands up).  How will your family feel when you are a good helper? How will Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…17

Jesus feel when He sees you helping just like He did? How did Jesus do his work? Who is happy when I obey? Who is happy when I help? Finger Play  Jesus is happy when I obey My angel is happy when I obey Papa is happy when I obey Mama is happy when I obey I am happy when I obey. (Use 5 fingers to count. Repeat using the word “Help” instead of “obey”).

6. CLOSING Sing  Repeat a new one learned today. Prayer  Pray that each child will do their best work for Jesus this week. Goodbye Song  It’s Time to Go  Child of the King 16 Remind the children to go to the toilet and have a drink BEFORE going into church so they can sit quietly during the service.

Lesson 3

Lost & Found SERVICE Jesus sets an example of service for us

REFERENCE Luke 2:41-50. MEMORY VERSE “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature” Luke 2:52. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know they can learn lessons in Sabbath School and church that will prepare them to help others. Feel respect for those who teach them in Sabbath School and church. Respond by listening carefully and learning the lessons taught. THE MESSAGE We learn so we can help others. This is a Lesson About Service Jesus’ experience in the temple is the beginning of His ministry. It is here He realizes that God is His true Father. And honours Him by sharing with the teachers there. Even the youngest child can serve God by telling others of Jesus’ love.

Room Decorations On the table, set out ordinance bread, ordinance cups and a container of red drink.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  Choose one activity, a or b a. What I can Do  Show a picture of a baby, or have a new mother bring her tiny baby to class. Encourage the children to tell you all the things Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…19

they can do now that they could not do when they were little babies. Sit up, crawl, walk, run, jump, feed yourself, talk, sing, go to the toilet, listen, obey, learn memory verses, tell stories, give hugs, be a helper, etc. Debriefing  Remember when we measured how tall you are and wrote it on your growth chart? You are much taller now than when you were a baby, and there are lots of things you have learned to do. Every week we are growing taller and learning to do more things. Who helps us to learn these things? There’s Mama and Papa and other big people in our family. There’s our Sabbath School teacher and the people who teach in big church. They all teach us how to do things. They teach us about God, they tell us Bible stories and teach us good songs and how to pray. And we grow taller when we eat good food and get exercise by running around and playing with our friends. Jesus was able to help people all His life because He had learned important things when He was a little boy. Learning can help you know how to help people. Our message for today is:  We learn so that we can help others.  Can you say it with me?

OR b. Make a Scroll  Needed: some paper and two straight sticks. If you have good clean paper, you can join it into a long strip and write the names of all the memory verses on it and use it each week. OR you can use newspaper with writing on it cut into strips and joined together. If you have no paper, use lengths of banana leaf. Join each end of the paper to one of the sticks, then roll them towards each other. Show the children your Bible and the scroll. In Bible-times, people did not know how to make books, so they used scrolls instead. These scrolls were very expensive as they were made of special paper or even skins of animals. There were no machines to print the words, so a man had to write them all very carefully with a kind of pen. It took a long time to do it carefully. Mary helped Jesus to learn lots of memory verses. He repeated them every day so He never forgot them. She told Him lots of Bible stories. She told him all about how God made the world. Do you think He told other boys and girls these wonderful stories? I’m sure He did. Do you like to learn your memory verses? Learning them can help you to help other people. The lessons Jesus learned when He was a boy helped him when He grew up to be a man.

20…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

Our message for today says:  We learn so we can help others.  Please say it with me.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to everyone, especially the visitors. Song  Welcome, Welcome Everyone  Child of the King 5. Praise Time  Choose a Sabbath Song and one or two others.

3.  BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour the words of the memory verse (Luke 2:52) in your Bible and place a marker there so a child can find the verse for you. Read the text aloud then teach it. Explain the meaning of the word “stature.” There are three words in English that are easily mixed upstature, statue and statute. A statute is a law, a statue is the figure of a person carved from wood or stone, stature means height. So our verse is saying that Jesus grew wiser as He grew taller. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…21

Have the children bend down small and slowly stand up as they say the verse. Have them point to their head as they say “wisdom” and stand tall and flex their arm muscles as they say stature. Song  Growing Up  Tune: Hear the Money Dropping LVPH 31 - suit actions to the words. Growing up like Jesus, I will not stay small Growing up like Jesus , Growing straight and tall Growing, growing, growing, growing I will not stay small All of me for Jesus, While I’m growing tall. Experiencing the Story  Have the table set with the bread and juice and as you share them with the children explain that the Passover feast was similar to the way we have ordinances in church. Prepare well so you can tell the story, using your imagination of what you might see along the road to Jerusalem. The children will sit in place, but can walk, run, tiptoe, smell, look in the distance, as you tell the story. Jesus went to a little church in Nazareth every Sabbath, but once a year his family went to the big temple church in the big city called Jerusalem. They did not take Jesus when He was a little boy, but when He was 12 years of age, He got to go along. Let’s pretend we are walking to Jerusalem with boy Jesus and Mary and Joseph and lots of other people. It is a long way and we will get very tired, but let’s think of all the things we can see along the way. Look at those pretty flowers, what colour are they? Do they smell nice? See those big rocks over there? I wonder if there is a bear or a lion hiding behind them? Let’s sing a song to frighten them away. This is the way we walk to church, walk to church, walk to church This is the way we walk to church in Je-ru-sa-lem. Ah, that’s better! Can you see that lion running away through the trees over there? We frightened him when we sang. Walk, walk, walk, walk, up this big hill we go. Now we can run down the hill and have a little drink in the river down in the valley. Now we are climbing another hill. I wonder what we will be able to see from the top. Oh, Look! There is Jerusalem! See the big shiny white building? That is the temple-church where we are going. We don’t have much further to walk now. There were lots and lots of people in Jerusalem ready to share in the special feast called the Passover. The Passover was to help the people remember the time when Moses led the children of Israel out of Egypt. The ordinance service we have in our church some 22…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

times is something like the Passover feast, so we are going to have it now.  (Bless the food then share out the bread and juice).  This is how boy Jesus would have eaten his Passover meal right there in Jerusalem. At the big temple-church the teachers talked with Jesus and taught him things. There were so many people there that when it was time to travel back home, Mary and Joseph thought their boy was somewhere in the crowd of travellers, but He wasn’t there. He was still in the big temple-church talking with the teachers. He asked them lots of questions. The teachers liked the questions. They liked to teach Boy Jesus. Soon the teachers began to ask Jesus questions. They were surprised that He knew so much about God. They were happy that Mary and Joseph had taught Him so much about God at home. Mary and Joseph had travelled a whole day before they knew Jesus was not with the crowd walking back to Nazareth. “Where is Jesus?” They asked. They were really worried. Mamas and Papas get worried when they think their boy or girl is lost. Mary was afraid. She hoped no one had tried to hurt him. “We must go back to the city!” She said to Joseph. “We have to find our boy.” They were very tired after walking all day, but they had no time to rest when Jesus was lost. It took a long time for them to walk back to Jerusalem, and all the way they prayed that Jesus would be safe until they found Him. In the city they looked for Jesus everywhere. They asked people, “Have you seen our son, Jesus?” But no one had seen Him. Then they went to the big temple-church, and there they found Him still talking with the temple teachers. Mary gave Jesus a big hug, and He was happy to go with them as they once again began the long walk to Nazareth. They talked about what Jesus had talked about with the teachers. But Mary was still worried about what had happened. “Jesus, why did you do this to us? She said. “ We looked everywhere for you. We were really worried.” Then Jesus said, “Why were you worried, Mother? Didn’t you know I would be where my Father’s work is?” Mary and Joseph didn’t know what He meant. Do you understand what He meant? What kind of work happens in church? Yes, people learn about God in church. That is what Jesus was doing in the big church. He was learning about God, and now He knew that Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…23

God was His true Father. And He knew that He would help people when He grew up. Do you think our memory verse is true? Let’s say it together. Bend down small and grow as you say it. Debriefing  Do you think Jesus enjoyed going to Jerusalem for the Passover celebrations? What do you think He thought of the temple? What would He have learned in Jerusalem? Do you know He was actually teaching the teachers? They liked to listen to Jesus because He was so interesting. He asked them questions that made them think a lot. Jesus had been taught by His mother about nature and helping others. He had learned many Bible stories. Jesus knew it was important to learn what the Bible says. He had learned many Bible verses. Can you remember the Bible stories and Memory verses we have been learning every week? We learn them so we can help others. Remember our message  We learn so we can help others.  Say it with me. Bible Study  Place a marker for Luke 2:41-50 in a Bible version the children understand. Read the verses aloud to them. What kind of questions do you think Jesus asked the teachers in the temple? Did He enjoy being with them? How did Jesus know so much about the Bible? Why is it important to know what the Bible says? Learning from the Bible helped Jesus get more wise and He grew taller. Do you want to learn more lessons from the Bible? Do you want to know more memory verses? How can you learn them? We can pray and ask Jesus to help us remember what we learn at Sabbath School and in family worship.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Why We Learn  Prepare a bag with these items in it: Bible, Hymn book, Kindy lesson book, Bible story book, item from nature – shell, flower, or fruit. Choose volunteers to take one item from the bag and tell what they can learn from that item. Discuss  Why do we learn our memory verse each week? Is it important to learn Bible verses? Why do we come to Sabbath School each week? Why do we listen to our lesson story in family worship? Why do we listen to our teachers and our pastor each week? Our Mamas and Papas and teachers and pastor are all people who teach us things about God. How does learning help us to help others? When you know more about Jesus and the Bible, it is easier to tell 24…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

other people about Him. When Jesus is our Friend, we can help other people make Him their Friend, too. When we sing the Sabbath School songs we have learned, we can sing them to other people and make them happy. Remember,  We learn so we can help others.  Say it with me.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Thank You, Pastor  Have the children make something to thank their pastor. They could make small thank-you cards or a banner saying “Thank-you, Pastor, from the Kindy Class” Write on a piece of cloth in big letters and join it to a stick like a flag, or two sticks. Have the class present their banner or cards to the Pastor during the church Service. Song  The Pastor in My Church  Tune: Farmer in the Dell The pastor in my church, the pastor in my church He preaches and he teaches, Oh, the pastor in my church. The pastor in my church, the pastor in my church He shakes my hand and says hello, the pastor in my church The pastor in my church, the pastor in my church, He prays for us and loves us all, the pastor in my church. Discuss  What does our Pastor do that we would like to thank him for? What do you think the pastor will say when he sees our banner? Do you know our Pastor had to go to school and learn many things before he could be our Pastor? And he still reads his Bible a lot so he can teach us what it says. Our pastor knows our message for today. Can you remember what it says? We learn so we can help others. That is why our pastor has learned a lot about the Bible.

6. CLOSING Prayer  Thank Jesus for all the people who teach us things about Him. Goodbye Song  It’s Time to Go  Child of the King 16 Remind the children to go to the toilet and have a drink BEFORE sitting in church so they can hear what the preacher wants them to learn in the Service.

Friend to All Lesson 4

SERVICE Jesus sets an example of service for us

REFERENCE Luke 2:40, 51, 52. MEMORY VERSE “Be kind to one another.” Ephesians 4:32. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know people and animals are happier when we are kind and gentle to them. Feel kind and gentle to people, pets and God’s earth. Respond by being kind to people, animals and the earth. THE MESSAGE We serve God when we are kind. This is a Lesson About Service Jesus sets us a good example because He is kind to all of God’s creation and cares for them in His own special way. We can learn to care for what God created as we study Jesus’ example. Every living thing was happier when He was near.

Room Decorations Set up the front of the room so it looks like a Bible-times home with a small table, a water pot, a sleeping mat and pillow, some carpenter’s tools.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  Choose one activity, a or b a. Being Kind  Show a picture of a cat or dog OR have a toy cat or dog. Discuss how we should treat our pets. Feed them, give them water to drink, pat them gently, never kick them or hurt them. Let the children come up with ideas. 26…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

Lead them to decide to treat them like they want to be treated themselves. Today’s message is:  We serve God when we are kind.  Let’s say it together.

OR b. Donkey Mask  Prepare copies of the donkey mask (see page. 94). Children can colour the mask. Help them cut out the eyes and join a string or rubber band to fit around the head. Debriefing  Did you enjoy making your masks? Do your friends look like little donkeys when they wear their masks? We will wear our masks today when we hear our ‘Bible story. It teaches us that Jesus was kind to his donkey and all other animals. How do you think we should treat animals today? Our message for today is:  We serve God when we are kind.  Let’s say that.

Sing offering song  Here is My Money for Jesus  LVPH 32. Birthdays  Work hard at getting the birth dates of all your class Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…27

members. Write them on the growth charts, then a glance will tell you if you need to have this Birthday Segment in your program this week. Keep it short. Sing birthday song. Collect the birthday offering. Pray for the child. Give them a simple card. Song  Count Birthday Money  LVPH 37

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Prepare your Bible so a child can find the verse for you. Read it aloud, then teach it, using these actions. Be kind - cross arms over chest To one another - point to others Ephesians 4:32 - palms together, then open. Song  Be Kind  Tune: Farmer in the Dell or LVPH 260 Be kind to one another, be kind to one another Be kind, be kind, be kind to one another. Experiencing the Story  Ask the children to pretend they are boy Jesus and act out parts of the story with you. If they made donkey masks in Readiness Activities, let them wear them. Practice telling the story with actions, till you know it really well. Most families where Jesus lived had at least one animal. Can you guess what it was? Yes, it was a donkey. Donkeys are like little horses. They are very strong. They can pull a plough when the farmer is digging the ground. They are good at carrying things. When Jesus’ family went somewhere, Jesus would help Joseph pack food and clothes into bags and then they would put them on the donkey’s back.  (Children pretend to pack bags and lift them onto the donkey’s back.) Jesus loved his family’s donkey. He helped to take care of it. When work was done for the day, Jesus gave food and water to the donkey.  (Pretend to give food and pour water).  Then He led it to a resting place for the night  (pat an area on the floor). Jesus was kind to other people’s animals, too. If He saw some children teasing an animal He asked them to stop.  (Wag finger, “No”.)  Sometimes He picked up an animal and petted it  (Act out).  If the animal looked hungry, He gave it some food  (Act out).  He always touched animals gently  (Act out). Animals were happy to be around Jesus. Horses ate the grass He held out to them. Cats liked to brush against His legs. Dogs wanted to lick his hand  (Hold hand out).  Even wild animals liked Jesus. A 28…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

wild animal is one that lives in the bush and has no owner. Animals like wallabies and cuscus came up close to Him as if they were saying “Hello, Jesus.” They knew Jesus was kind and would never hurt them. Birds flew down and rested on his head or His shoulders as they sang songs to him. If He saw a baby bird that had fallen out of its nest, Jesus put it back  (Act out).  What do you think the Mama bird did? She sang an even prettier song to say “Thank you, Jesus.” Jesus liked to watch bugs, too. He liked to watch caterpillars, ants and ladybirds crawl. He let them crawl up his arm  (Act out).  He never stepped on them or hurt them. Jesus liked looking at all the beautiful things God had made. He studied the stars and moon at night  (Look up and wiggle fingers).  He watched the flowers grow and sometimes He picked a bunch of them and brought them to His mother. He watched the trees with tiny fruits or nuts hanging on them. He knew that when they were ripe, He would pick baskets of them to carry home for His family to enjoy.  (Pretend to pick fruit and put it in a basket then carry it with two hands).  What do you think was His favourite fruit? Jesus loved people most of all. He didn’t like to see anyone get hurt. If one person hurt another, Jesus found some way to make the hurting person feel better  (pretend to put arm around someone and give them a hug).  He shared His food with people who were hungry  (Act out).  If someone was thirsty, He gave them a drink of water  (Act out).  Jesus liked to play with the children that no one else liked. He visited the old people who had no families and helped them. When people were sick or sad He sang songs to make them feel better. People liked to be near Him because He was always happy and cheerful. Can I see your smiles, too? Jesus sang songs as He did His work  (sing as you pretend to sweep the floor or hammer a nail). Jesus never destroyed flowers or burned the bush just for fun. He never threw rubbish just anywhere. He kept things neat and clean and was kind to the earth that His heavenly Father had made. Jesus was kind to everyone and all living things. Everyone was happy when Jesus was around. Song  Things Jesus Liked When He Was A Child  LVPH 139 Debriefing  What animal did Jesus’ family own? How did He help take care of it? What other animals did Jesus love? How did Jesus protect the little animals? How did Jesus help children who didn’t have friends? What about sad or sick people? How did Jesus help people who were hungry or thirsty? What did Jesus do to keep His Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…29

place nice? Do you like to help people? How can you be kind to animals? How can you be kind to the earth? Remember,  We serve God when we are kind.  Say it with me. Bible Study  Place a marker in Luke 2:40, 51, 52, so a child can find the place. Let the children see that two of these verses are memory verses. See if they can remember them. Read the verses aloud. What kind of wisdom do you need to care for animals? What does the verse mean when it says, “the grace of God was upon Him?”  (That God’s grace or love filled Jesus’ life).  How would someone with God’s grace in them act?  (Loving, kind, gentle).  What does it mean “to be in favour with God and man?”  (Jesus lived so He pleased God and He made people happy, too.)  When we are kind, we make God happy and we make other people happy, and we make ourselves happy, too. Let’s sing our memory verse together. Remember,  We serve God when we are kind.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON As Jesus Was Kind  Have a collection of pictures of animals, birds, flowers, children, adults, beautiful scenery. (Use the Sabbath School picture book if you have one) Ask different children to answer questions about a picture. What is this picture about? What do you think Jesus would have done to care for this animal  (or person, or place, etc?)  What could you do to care for this animal  (or person or place, etc?). Discuss  the beautiful things God has made. Ask about their favourite animals, flower, fruit.  How can we make the people and animals around us feel happy? How can we care for the place around us?  (By caring for the plants and grass. By putting all the rubbish in the right place, etc).  Can you remember our message for today? Let’s all say it together:  We serve God when we are kind.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Be Kind  Have the children sing the memory verse again. Suggest that they sing it at home to tell their family that they really want to be kind to everyone. They could also practice singing other verses such as Be kind to the animals, be kind to the animals Be kind, be kind, be kind to the animals Be kind to God’s ground, be kind to God’s ground Be kind, be kind, be kind to God’s ground. 30…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

When we are kind to one another and kind to the animals and look after our place and keep it nice and clean, we will have a really happy home. And it really is fun to be one of God’s helpers.

6. CLOSING Prayer  Have the children repeat this prayer after you: Dear Jesus, please help us to love other people. Thank You. Amen. Goodbye Song  It’s Time to Go  Child of the King 16 Remind the children that when they sit and listen in church, like boy Jesus did, they are being kind to other people. And please don’t leave any rubbish inside or outside the church.

Let Them Come Lesson 5

GRACE

God has made us part of His family

REFERENCES Luke 18:15-17; My Bible Friends. MEMORY VERSE “Let the little children come to me.” Luke 18:16. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know that children are an important part of Jesus’ family. Feel that they belong to Jesus’ family. Respond by thanking Jesus for His love and care. THE MESSAGE Jesus loves me! He wants me in His family! This is a Lesson About Grace Grace is God’s special loving kindness. Jesus loved the children long ago, and He loves children today. He welcomes everyone, young or old, into His family. It was a custom of the Jewish people to get a pastor or elder of the church to bless their children, but the disciples thought Jesus was too busy to do this.

Room Decorations Keep them the same, but hang a Picture Roll of Jesus with the children or set up a scene of Jesus with the children on your flannel graph board.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  Choose one activity, a or b a. Hands for Jesus  Needed: paper or banana leaves, scissors, pens, pins. Draw outlines of each child’s hand or foot, write their name on it then cut it out. Each one may be pinned to the flannel board beside the picture of Jesus, or peg them to a string across the room. 32…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

Discuss  Who does Jesus love? He loves every one, boys and girls, Mamas and Papas, old people and young people. He even loves those who do very bad things. The bad things they do make Him very sad, but he never stops loving them. Jesus loves each one of you here today. Do you love Him? Our message for today is:  Jesus loves me! He wants me in His family!  Let’s say it together. Sing  Jesus Loves the Little Ones Like Me, Me, Me  LVPH 107.

OR b. Baby Time  Ask a mother with a small baby to come to class and talk about how gentle we need to be with babies. Discuss what we need to do to care for the baby. If you have made a class set of stick dolls, let the children role-play caring for a baby. Debriefing  Who has a baby in their family? Who loves babies? You were once a baby, too. Now you are lots bigger and you can do many more things. But babies are very special. Lots of Papas and Mamas bring their babies to church and ask the Pastor to bless them. Maybe your parents did that with you. You can ask them. They may have a little certificate the pastor gave them that day with your name on it. Today we will have a story that shows how much Jesus loves babies and little children. The message for today says,  Jesus loves me! He wants me in His Family.  Let’s say it together.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to everyone, especially the visitors. Song  Welcome, Welcome Everyone  Child of the King 5 Praise Time  Choose a Sabbath Song and one or two others. Here are some suggestions for this month: Jesus in the Family  LVPH 273 Jesus Loves Me  LVPH 102 Jesus Loves the Children  LVPH 106 Jesus Was a Helper  LVPH 295 Oh, Friend Do You Love Jesus?  LVPH 210 Run to Jesus  LVPH 57 Prayer Time  Use Prayer Song  “I Have Hands that Clap”  (LVPH 215) to prepare the children to pray. Sometimes have the children pray. Sometimes they will repeat your prayer. Remember to make use of the message for the week in your prayers. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…33

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour the verse in your Bible and place a marker there so a child can find it for you to read aloud. Learn it with these actions; Let the little children - hold out hand to measure a small child Come - beckon with hand to come To me - point to self Luke 18:16 - palms together, then open. Sing  with actions to tune Sabbath is a Happy Day  LVPH 235 Let the little children come to me, come to me, come to me Let the little children come to me Luke 18, verse 16. Experiencing the Story If you have the My Bible Friends book, show the pictures as you tell the story. Ask the children to smile or frown with you as you tell the story (have them practise it first). Finger Play  Let Them Come The children came to Jesus - bring hand to point to self His disciples sent them away - push away with hand Then Jesus said, Let them come - bring hand to point to self And sit with me today - pat your lap. One day some mothers heard that Jesus was in their town. They had heard a lot about Jesus. They knew He healed sick people, He told wonderful stories, and He was kind and loving to people. The mothers wanted Jesus to pray for their children and bless them. So 34…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

they picked up their babies, and held the hands of their other children and went to find Jesus. They found Him sitting under a tree, talking to some grown-up people. Jesus helpers, the 12 disciples, were standing near Him. The helpers frowned at all the mothers and children  (frown)  as they came near. One of the mothers walked right up to the frowning men and said, “Excuse me. We would like to have Jesus pray for our children.” One of the men frowned  (more frowning)  and said “Jesus is too busy. Come back later.” He did not think children were important. He thought the children would just bother Jesus. The mothers and the children were sad  (sad faces).  They started to go back home. Some of the children began to cry. But Jesus saw what was happening. He stood up and said, “Let the children come to Me. Don’t stop them. They are part of My family.” That’s our memory verse, isn’t it? Let’s sing it together: Song  Tune:  Sabbath is a Happy Day Let the children come to me, come to me, come to me Let the children come to me, Luke 18 verse 16. Then Jesus opened His arms and a little girl ran to Him. He picked her up and hugged her. Soon all the children ran to Him. Do you think they had sad faces now? Were they frowning? Oh, no! They were so happy and excited. Then Jesus sat down. He let the children climb onto His lap. He let them touch His hands and His face. He let them give him hugs. Jesus smiled at the children and laughed at their jokes. He hugged them back, He played peek-a-boo with the babies. He held each child in His arms and prayed for them. The mothers were so happy that Jesus loved all the children and welcomed them into His family. Jesus loves you. He wants you in His family, too. Songs  Run to Jesus  LVPH 57 With Jesus in the Family LVPH 273 Jesus Loves the Children LVPH 106 Debriefing  If you had been with the children that day, would you have tried to get close to Jesus? How would you have felt if someone chased you away? What would you say to Jesus if you were sitting on His lap? Why did Jesus say “Let the children come to me?” How can we talk to Jesus now? What special places do we go to meet with Jesus?  (Sabbath School, church, family worship).  When will we be able to see Jesus? Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…35

Do you remember our message for today?  Jesus loves me! He wants me in His family. Bible Study Have a marker in Luke 18:15-17 so a child can open your Bible at that page. Read it aloud. Remind the children that the coloured verse 16 is the memory verse for today. Debriefing  Who brought their children and babies to Jesus? What did they want Jesus to do? What did the disciples tell the mothers? What did Jesus say? And what’s our message today? Let’s say it together:  Jesus loves me! He wants me in His family.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Hugs from Jesus  Jesus loves you! You can’t sit on His lap and get a hug from Him just yet, but He shows His love when Mama or Papa or other people who love you give you a hug. Right now, just for fun, let’s have a big group hug to remind us just how much Jesus loves us.  (Open your arms and invite all the children to gather for a big hug together). Debriefing  Does Jesus think children are important in His family? Why does Jesus want you in His family? What are some of the ways Jesus shows His love for us today? Who does Jesus use to show His love to us? Let us close our eyes now and say together “Thank you, Jesus for loving me.”

5.  SHARING THE LESSON I’m in Jesus’ Family  Prepare a name tag for each child (see page 91) by cutting them out and tying a string loop at the top of each one so it can be hung over a shirt button or around their wrist. Debriefing  Who does Jesus want in His family? Does he invite everyone to join Him? He especially loves children, but everyone is welcome in Jesus’ family. The name tag you have been given says, “I’m in Jesus’ Family” It is for you to wear all week. You can tell people what it says. You can tell them that Jesus wants them in His family, too.

Lesson 6

Too Short to See GRACE

God has made us part of His family

REFERENCES Luke 19:1-10; Story in My Bible Friends. MEMORY VERSE “Jesus came to seek and to save what was lost” Luke 19:10. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know God loves everyone and wants us to love them, too. Feel comfortable with all kinds of people. Respond by including everyone in their activities. THE MESSAGE Jesus wants everyone to be in His family. This is a Lesson About Grace God wants everyone to be in His family. When we become a part of His family He helps us not to do the naughty things we used to do. We want to be more like Jesus. It is God’s grace that empowers us to change the way we live and to forgive and love others. God gives everyone the opportunity to be in His family.

Room Decorations The same as last week except to replace the flannel board with a tree branch and a chair or ladder for Zacchaeus to climb.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  Choose one activity, a or b a. Tax–Collector Purse  Needed: a large bag, cut-outs of coins, large leaves for each child. Cut out coins on page 43. (Copy if you need more). Have a supply of leaves large enough for each child to wrap a coin in. Talk about money and how it is used. Remind then that it is wise to have a purse in which to keep our money. 38…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

Did you know that our Government needs some of our money? They use it to make roads, and build hospitals and pay doctors and nurses and build schools and pay teachers, etc. This money is called tax. Our story today is about a man whose work was to collect the government tax money. He had a big bag (show one) in which he put the tax money. He was not a good man, but Jesus wanted Him in His family. Keep your special money bag safe because we are going to use it in our story today. Today’s message is:  Jesus wants everyone to be in His family.  Can you say that with me?

OR b. Stop and Hug  Have the children and teachers tiptoe around the room. Every time you say “stop and hug,” they should form into groups of three and hug each other. Debriefing  Did you get many nice hugs? Why is it nice to be hugged? Is hugging a nice way to welcome someone? Is hugging a way to show that you are a friend? Our story today is about a man who people didn’t like. He didn’t have any friends. No one wanted to give him a hug. But Jesus did! Jesus found a way to include him in His family. Today’s message says:  Jesus wants everyone to be in His family.  Let’s say it together.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to everyone, especially the visitors. Song  Welcome, Welcome Everyone  Child of the King 5 Praise Time  Choose a Sabbath Song and one or two others.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour the verse and place a marker so a child can find and point to the verse. Read it aloud. Teach it with these actions: Jesus -point upward came -bring hands towards self to seek -hand over eyes and to save -fists crossed, move hands apart what was lost -fingertips together, then drop hands Luke 19:10 -palms together, then open Sing  Tune:  Sabbath is a Happy day Jesus came to seek and save What was lost, what was lost Jesus came to seek and save Luke 19, verse ten. Experiencing the Story  Practice the story till you can tell it well, with actions. You will need two money bags. Fill one with stones so it looks full and heavy. Have the children unwrap their “money” ready to bring. Nobody liked Zacchaeus. Nobody asked him to their parties. People wouldn’t even say hello to him. They didn’t want to be anywhere near to him. Why didn’t people like Zacchaeus? It was because he was a tax collector for the government.  (Show heavy bag).  He made all the people give him lots of money. He made them give him lots of extra money.  (Children bring their money and put it in the open bag).  But did he give all the money to the government? Oh no!. He took out all the 40…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

extra money and put it in his own money bag.  (Do it)  So now he was rich and all the people he robbed were very poor. Zacchaeus was a kind of rascal steal man. That is why no one liked him. One day Zacchaeus heard that Jesus loved everybody. He said to himself, “I wonder if Jesus loves me, too?” Then he remembered all the money he had stolen from the people and he was rather sad. “No, Jesus can’t love me” he said to himself. “I’m sure Jesus does not love someone who is a thief.” Did Jesus love Zacchaeus? Of course He did. Jesus loves every body. And He wants to help us not do naughty things. Zacchaeus decided he wouldn’t cheat people any more. He only took the right tax money from people. But people still didn’t like him. They didn’t trust him. They didn’t want to be his friend. They wouldn’t even let him come to church. Now Zacchaeus was sad and lonely. He wanted to be a good man. He wanted people to like him. One day Zacchaeus heard that Jesus was coming to Jericho. That was his town. He just had to see Jesus. He knew Jesus would understand how he felt. But crowds of other people wanted to see Jesus too. What can you see when you are in the middle of a crowd? You can only see people’s legs, can’t you? Why is that? Yes, you are too short. Zacchaeus had the same problem. He was a very short man. He was frightened he was going to miss seeing Jesus. Very quickly he ran to a tree. The Bible says it was a sycamore tree with limbs that he could reach. Very quickly he climbed into the tree and out along a branch hanging over the road.  (Stand a child on the chair or stepladder). Zacchaeus watched as Jesus came closer. Soon He would walk right under the tree. Suddenly, when Jesus was right under the tree He stopped and He looked up at Zacchaeus. And what did He say? “Zacchaeus, you come down. I must stay at your house today.” Song  Zacchaeus  LVPH 63. The people were so surprised! They could not believe that Jesus would want to go to Zacchaeus’s house. Zacchaeus was a cheater! The people did not know that he was sorry for the naughty things he had done. But Jesus knew. Well, Zacchaeus slid down out of that tree very fast. He was so excited. He knew now that Jesus loved him and had forgiven him for all the bad things he had been doing. Quickly he led Jesus to his big Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…41

house and soon everyone was sitting down to a big feast. Jesus told Zacchaeus and all his family how much He loved them and wanted them to be a part of His family. He told them he had come to earth to save people, including them. Zacchaeus was so happy to be a part of God’s family. He wanted to do things the way Jesus did. He wanted to be kind and loving. He looked at Jesus and said, “I want to give half of my money to the poor. I want to give back four times as much to the people I have cheated. I want to love everybody like you do.  (Give the children back their money.) Jesus smiled. He was so happy that Zacchaeus wanted to love everybody. And He was happy that Zacchaeus felt he belonged to God’s family. Jesus doesn’t want to leave anyone out of His family. He wants us to be a part of His family, too. Song  Memory verse song – Jesus came to seek and save Debriefing  How did Zacchaeus show he wanted to be a part of God’s family? What did Jesus do that showed Zacchaeus that He loved him? How do you think Zacchaeus felt? What do you think about being a part of God’s family? Jesus loves us all, no matter what we look like or how we talk, or if we’ve done something naughty. Do you know someone that other people do not like? Do you think Jesus likes that person? What would you do if you thought no one liked you? Jesus wants us to be nice to everyone. He wants us to invite others into our games and play. What does our message say? Can we all repeat it?  Jesus wants everyone to be in His family. Bible Study  Place a marker in a Bible at Luke 19:1-10 which is where both the lesson story and the memory verse is found. Have a child find the verses for you to read aloud. Debriefing  What town did Zacchaeus live in? What was his job? How was he able to see Jesus? What did Jesus say to him? Is it easy to say sorry when you have done something wrong? What did Zacchaeus promise to do? What did this show the people? Put up your hand if you want to see Jesus. Remember, Jesus wants everyone to be in his family.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Friendship Circle  Make a small circle using a length of string or rope. Ask the children to stand inside the circle without touching the string. Have the circle too small for them to do this. 42…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

How can we make enough room from our friends to fit inside? Make the circle a little bigger, but not big enough. Some children still can’t fit inside. Now what?  (Move closer together or make the circle larger. Continue till all the children are inside). Debriefing  How did you feel when you were inside but your friends were outside? What was it like to be outside when others were inside? Sometimes we feel left out when we are not a part of something. We always need to make room for everyone. Jesus invites everyone to be with Him. Remember,  Jesus wants everyone to be in His family.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Ask the children to tell which part of the Zacchaeus story they like best. Why? Remind them of the message in the story. Ask them to take their paper money home and tell someone the story of Zacchaeus and to tell this person that Jesus wants everyone to be in His family.

Who Is Your Neighbour? Lesson 7

GRACE

God has made us part of His family

REFERENCE Luke 10:25-37. MEMORY VERSE “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Luke 10:27. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know that Jesus wants them to be kind to everyone. Feel sympathy for anyone who needs help. Respond by being a friend to everyone. THE MESSAGE God wants us to show love to everyone. This is a Lesson About Grace The Samaritan man treats the injured man like God treats us – with love and kindness. Those who belong to God’s family will truly treat others with love and kindness.

Room Decorations Drape a sheet over a chair to represent the rock where the robbers hid. Make some kind of donkey. It could be a stool or piece of a log with a donkey-shaped head made of carton box and a bush string tail. Or it could be a child wearing a donkey mask. It will be needed again in week 9.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  Choose one activity, a or b a. Circle of Friends  Have some small squares of paper in different colours, OR have a collection of equal numbers of small objects – shells, seeds, and stones. Give one to each child to hold. Tell the children to welcome one another to Sabbath School by shaking hands. But they can only welcome those who have the same object or coloured paper as 44…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

theirs. After they have done this, tell them to greet anyone regardless of what they are holding. Debriefing  How did it feel when some of your friends ignored you because you had a different object in your hand? Do you enjoy being left out? Our story today is about someone who was loving and kind to a man who was his enemy. To whom should we show our love? Today’s message says:  God wants us to show love to everyone.  Say it with me.

OR b. Doctor/Nurse  Have a basket of various items for the children to use as they pretend to be doctors or nurses: Look for a toy doctors kit in a store to add to your SS supplies. Also a mat, pillow, blanket, bandages, water “medicine” in a bottle, sticking plasters, wet cloth, etc. Debriefing  Did you have fun pretending to help someone feel better? Who takes care of you when you are sick? Or hurt? Should we only be kind and helpful to our family? What about people who are different from us. Should we help them? Today’s message says,  God wants us to show love to everyone.   Let us all say it together.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to everyone, especially the visitors. 3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour Luke 10:27, put a marker in the place so a child can find the verse for you to read aloud. Teach it using these actions: Love - cross arms over your chest your neighbour - point to others as yourself - point to self Luke 10:27 - palms together, then open Sing  Tune: Jesus loves me Love your neighbour as yourself Love your neighbour as yourself Love your neighbour as yourself Luke ten, verse twenty seven. Experiencing the Story  Prepare so you can tell the story well using children to act the parts of the traveller, robbers, two priests, innkeeper, Samaritan and a donkey (see room preparation notes). One day Jesus was talking to a crowd of people when a teacher asked him a question. He said, “What do I have to do to live forever?” “What does it say in the Bible?” Jesus asked kindly. The teacher replied, ”It says to love God with all your heart, and to love your neighbour as much as you love yourself.” Jesus smiled and said, “That’s exactly right!” Then the teacher asked another question. “But who is my neighbour?” Jesus answered the man by telling this story. A Jewish man was travelling from Jerusalem to the city of Jericho. It is a dangerous road. It goes down through the mountains 46…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

where nobody lives. Robbers like to hide in the caves and rocks there  (Traveller walks slowly across the room. Robbers hid behind the “rock”). The traveller was trying to be very careful, but suddenly a group of robbers jumped out and attacked him.  (Remind robbers to be gentle).  They tore off his clothes. They beat him with sticks. They stole his money and everything he had with him. Then they ran away leaving the poor man lying there on the road, almost dead. After a while, a priest came along. A priest was a kind of pastor who was very proud. He saw the poor man lying there all bruised and bleeding. But he pretended he didn’t see him and turned his head the other way and walked on the other side of the road as he hurried away. He was a Jew and he thought the poor man might be a Samaritan. The Jewish people did not like Samaritans. They thought they were enemies, though they were really cousins who lived in a different place. A little while later another priest walked past. He heard the poor man moaning in pain. The priest tiptoed over to take a look. The poor man was so dirty and there was blood everywhere! The priest wrinkled up his nose and hurried away. He was frightened the robbers might come and get him, too. Besides, he couldn’t be bothered with someone who might be a Samaritan. Not long after that a Samaritan man came along riding a donkey. Remember that a Samaritan man and a man from Jerusalem usually did not even talk to each other. But this man was different. When he saw the injured man, he stopped, got off his donkey and rushed over to the poor man. He wanted to see if there was something he could do to help him. He knelt down beside the man and gave him a drink. Then he began to wash his cuts and put bandages on them. Then he helped the poor traveller up onto the donkey and slowly led the donkey into town. The Samaritan took the poor traveller to an inn where he could rest till he felt better. He said to the innkeeper, “Please take care of this man. Please give him food to eat and call a doctor to come and see him. Here is some money for you. If it is not enough, I will give you some more when I come back on my way home again.” When Jesus finished the story, he looked at the teacher who had asked him the question and asked, “Which of those three men was a neighbour to the traveller that the robbers attacked?” The teacher knew the answer. It was easy. He said, “It was the one who took care of him.” “That’s right,” said Jesus with a big smile. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…47

“Now you go and be a good neighbour, too.” Jesus taught us to show love to everyone. It doesn’t matter if they are old people or young people. It doesn’t matter what they look like or talk like or smell like – Jesus asks us to help our neighbour. And our neighbour is not just the person who lives next to us. Our neighbour is anyone who needs help. Remember, Jesus said we are to be kind and helpful just like the Samaritan man was. Debriefing  Did you enjoy acting out the story? Who didn’t help the wounded man? Who did? Why did the Samaritan man help someone who was not his friend? The Bible tells us to love our enemies. Do you think the priests did this? Did the Samaritan? Which would you like to be your friend? Do you think the travelling Jew and the Samaritan man became friends? When we are kind to our enemies, they become our friends. Does Jesus love only one kind of people? Who is our neighbour? Remember,  God wants us to show love to everyone.  Say it with me. Bible Study  Place a bookmark in your Bible so a child can find Luke 10:25-37. Use a version they can understand. Read the verses aloud, using simple words where necessary. Who is your neighbour? Is it only the person living next door to you? Jesus said that anyone who needs help is our neighbour. Did you notice that one of the verses we read is our memory verse. Let us sing it together: Song  Tune: Jesus Loves Me Love your neighbour as yourself Love your neighbour as yourself Love your neighbour as yourself Luke 10, verse 27.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON My Neighbour  Talk about who is my neighbour. Make a list. Discuss ways we could help them. Remember to apply this to your local situation, but to also include people in other places.  How can we show love to everyone?  (by bringing our offerings and praying for people who don’t know Jesus). Remember,  God wants us to show love to everyone.  Let’s say it together.

48…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

5. SHARING THE LESSON Love Your Neighbour  Discuss who needs help in your community and in what ways the children could be a good neighbour to them. For example: Sick- sing to them, take flowers, tell a story, old people –take firewood, rake leaves, lonely -tell them the Bible story, hungry – give them some food. Encourage each child to think of someone other than family they could help this week to show their love.

6. CLOSING Song  I Want to Be Like Jesus  LVPH 194 Closing Prayer  Pray that the children will find a way to be a good neighbour this coming week. Goodbye Song  It’s Time to Go  Child of the King 16

Lesson 8

Lazarus, Come Out! God has made us part of His family GRACE

God has made us part of His family

REFERENCES John 11:1-44. MEMORY VERSE “Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” John 11:5. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know that Jesus loves and cares for everyone. Feel sure that Jesus always knows what is best for us. Respond by deciding to always trust Jesus. THE MESSAGE Jesus does what is best for us. This is a Lesson About Grace Jesus always does what is best for us. It may not be what we want, but His plan is best. By His grace, Jesus brought Lazarus back to life and restored him to his family. When we accept His gift of grace, He gives us new life and welcomes us into His family.

Room Decorations Continue to use the Bible-times home we have had all Quarter. To one side make a “cave” using a sheet draped over a table.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  Choose one activity, a or b a. Wrapped Up  Have two “laplaps” or lengths of material and let the children take turns in wrapping each other in them from head to toe. Debriefing  Did you have fun wrapping each other in the cloth? What did you like best about it? What didn’t you like? Did you know there are stories in the Bible where people wrapped others like this? Our 50…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

story today is about a man who was wrapped in cloth. His sisters were sad. But Jesus knew something they didn’t know. Our message for today says:  Jesus does what is best for us.  Say it with me.

OR b. Finger Puppets  With a pen, draw two eyes and a mouth on three fingers of one hand on each child. Tell them that their names are Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Show the children how to wiggle them as they repeat each name. This will be practice for the memory verse. Debriefing  What are the names of your puppets? Show me how to make them move. Martha, Mary and Lazarus were real people. They were two sisters and a brother. Our story today is about them. Mary and Martha were sad, but Jesus knew what to do. The message for today says:  Jesus does what is best for us.  Say it with me.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Prepare your Bible by colouring John 11:5 and placing a marker in the page so a child can find the verse and point to it for you to read aloud. Have the children use their three fingers with faces drawn on them as they learn the verse. Jesus - point upward Loved - hug self Martha - wiggle Martha finger and her sister - wiggle Mary finger and Lazarus - wiggle Lazarus finger John 11:5 - palms together, then open Experiencing the Story  Needed: a wet face cloth, a “cave”, a length of cloth, children to be Lazarus, Martha, Mary. Lazarus can lie on the floor and Mary and Martha sit nearby in front of the children as you tell the story (well prepared). Mary and her sister, Martha, were really sad and worried. Mary said, “I wish our Friend Jesus was here. If Jesus was here, He would heal our brother, Lazarus. Martha squeezed the cool water out of a cloth and laid it on Lazarus’ forehead.  (Martha does it)  He felt so hot because he was very sick with fever. “Let’s send a message to Jesus,” said Mary. “If He knows Lazarus is sick, He will come quickly and heal Him.” While they were waiting for Jesus to come, the sisters did everything they could to help Lazarus get well. But he just got weaker and weaker. Then he died. Martha and Mary had to wrap Lazarus in a cloth and carry him to a cave – that’s how they buried people there.  (Mary and Martha do this). Many friends came to comfort Mary and Martha and to cry with them. Everyone was very sad. Everybody would miss Lazarus very much.  (Children make sad crying noises). 52…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

“Where is Jesus?” Mary cried. “Why didn’t He come to heal our brother? He has healed lots of other people. If only He was here, he would have healed Lazarus, too.” But Jesus still didn’t hurry to Lazarus’s house, and His disciples were surprised about that because they knew He loved Lazarus. For two more days He continued healing and helping other people before Jesus and His disciples hurried off the village of Bethany where the sisters lived. Martha saw him coming and went to meet Him. She said, “Lord, if you had been here my brother would not have died.” Jesus made her feel better when He said to her, “Your brother will rise and live again.” Everyone followed Mary and Martha as they led the way to the cave where Lazarus was buried. A big stone blocked the doorway. Jesus stopped. He was so sad that He cried. Then He ordered the servants to “Roll the stone away!”  (Children can pull the sheet off the table). Then Jesus prayed this prayer.  (Ask children to fold their hands and close their eyes).  Dear Father, I thank You that You hear Me. I know You always hear Me. I am saying these things out loud because I want all these people to know You have sent Me to be their Saviour.” Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!”  (Lazarus comes out still wrapped in the cloth).  “LOOK!” Someone shouted, pointing to the cave. There was Lazarus in the doorway. He was standing up! He was coming out just as Jesus had commanded. Lazarus was alive again! “Take the grave clothes off him.” Jesus said. Mary and Martha ran to do it. Then they hugged Lazarus. They were so happy. Everyone was smiling. They looked from Lazarus to Jesus. No one but God can bring someone who has died back to life again. Now they all knew that Jesus was really God’s Holy Son. Now the disciples understood why Jesus had not rushed to heal Lazarus. He had a better plan in mind, a very special plan to show all the people that He really truly was the Son of God. We can always trust Jesus to do what is best – best for others and best for us, too. Song  A Friend of Jesus  Tune: Mary had a Little Lamb; Wiggle fingers Martha was a friend of Jesus, friend of Jesus, friend of Jesus Martha was a friend of Jesus, I’ll be His friend, too Mary was a friend of Jesus… Lazarus was a friend of Jesus… Jesus is a friend of children… Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…53

Debriefing  Why were Martha and Mary sad? How long did it take for Jesus to come to Lazarus? What was He doing during that time? Why did Jesus cry? How do you think Lazarus felt when he came out of the grave? What did Mary and Martha and all the people know about Jesus after Lazarus came back to life? Which part of the story do you like best? Jesus always knows what is the best thing to do. And, can you say it with me, Jesus does what is best for us. Let us say our memory verse again and wiggle our fingers. “Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” John 11 verse 5. Never forget that he loves you, too. Song  God is so Good  LVPH 88 Bible Study  Use a Bible the children can understand and place a marker in John 11:1-44 so a child can find the place for you to read verses 38-44. Debriefing  How did Jesus feel about Lazarus? Why did Jesus wait to come to him? Why was it important that the people knew He was sent from God? Jesus doesn’t want anyone to ever die, but Satan causes us to die. When Jesus comes again He will bring all the people who have loved Him back to life again because they are part of His family. That is good news, isn’t it? Remember, Jesus always does what is best for us.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Doing What’s Best  Have you noticed that sometimes Mama and Papa make you eat, wear or do, things you do not like? Why do they do this? Because they love us and know it is best for us. Like when they tell you its bedtime but you want to keep on playing, or they have to punish you to help you remember not to be naughty? Or you have to go to the doctor and have a “shot” so you won’t get a bad sickness? Can you think of some other things that happen in your home? Have you noticed too that your parents sometimes say “Yes” when you ask for something. And sometimes they have to say “No”. And other times they say “Wait a while?” Jesus does the same. Does He always answer your prayers just the way you want? Sometimes He says “Yes”, sometimes he says “No” and sometimes He says, “Not yet.” Sometimes He works out things in a better way than we asked. But He always does what is best for us. Remember, too, that “No” is just as much an answer as “Yes” even if we don’t like it very much. Here is a little song to remind us. Song  Jesus Loves Me  LVPH 102 54…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

5. SHARING THE LESSON Prepare some kind of heart for the children to take home. Make it of paper, card or even a green leaf. Discuss with the children how they feel when they get a “No” answer to something they want to happen. Remind them that they can always trust Jesus because He always does what is best for them. Ask them to share the heart with someone as they tell them the story of Jesus and Lazarus. And that He loves us all and he wants to help us, too.

Blessed is the king who comes Blessed is the king who comes In the name of the Lord. Debriefing  Did you enjoy marching as you sang that victory song? Can you wave your branches up and down gently? The Bible tells a story about people waving branches to praise Jesus. Palm branches were used as a sign of victory. The people wanted to worship Jesus and give Him victory. And they wanted to praise Him for all He had done for them. Do you know that we worship Jesus when we praise Him? Can you say that with me? We worship Jesus when we praise Him.

OR b. Flower Lei  Have a basket of flowers and leaves, some thread and a needle and have the children help you by taking turns making a lei. When you have finished, hang the lei around the neck of whatever you are using for a donkey at lesson time. Debriefing  Did you enjoy making the lei? Leis are used to hang around people’s necks to honour them. The Bible tells a story of when people used flowers to give praise and honour to Jesus. We can praise Jesus too. Today’s message says  We worship Jesus when we praise Him.  Say it with me.

Memory Verse  Underline the verse in your Bible and place a marker there so a child can open the Bible and point to the verse for you to read aloud. If you have been singing it during Readiness Activities, you can now learn it with the following actions: Blessed - hands held out in blessing is the king - pretend to put crown on head who comes - motion to come to you in the name - point to mouth of the Lord - point upward Luke 19:38 - palms together, then open Song  Tune:  Round and round the City Blessed is the King who comes Blessed is the King who comes Blessed is the King who comes In the name of the Lord. Experiencing the Story  Have the children act the story as you tell it. Prepare your “donkey” (see suggestions in Lesson 7) Have flowers and fern leaves for the children to use. Jesus and His disciples were walking along a road on the way to the city of Jerusalem. Jesus was quiet as He was busy thinking. He knew it was time for something very important. He knew it was time for all the people to see that He was the Messiah – the One that God had sent from heaven to save all the people who chose to belong to His family. When they were close to Jerusalem, Jesus suddenly stopped walking. “Go into that village,” He said to two of His disciples. “You will see a young donkey tied up. No one has ever ridden it. I want you to untie it and bring it to me. And if anyone asks you what you are doing, just say ‘The Lord needs it.’” Jesus needed the donkey because He was planning to do what the

58…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

Bible said that the Messiah would do.  (Read Zechariah 9:9).  “Your King is coming to you. He is gentle and riding on a donkey. He is on a young donkey.” It was a custom in those days for a king to ride into a city on a big white horse- the biggest and most powerful one they could find. They wanted everyone to know that they were the king. They wanted everyone to be afraid of them. Jesus wanted everyone to know He was King. But He didn’t want people to feel afraid of Him, even though He was king of the whole world. The disciples hurried off to do as Jesus asked. When they entered the village, they found a young donkey, just as Jesus said they would.  (Use the “donkey” you have prepared).  And as they untied it, the owner wanted to know what they were doing. The disciples answered, “The Lord needs it,” just as Jesus had said to do. The owner let them lead the little donkey away. Song  Just a Little Donkey LVPH 137 There was no saddle, so the disciples put their coats over the colt for Jesus to sit on.  (Do it).  Lazarus, who had been raised from the dead, led the donkey. The road to Jerusalem was crowded. Fathers held their children on their shoulders so they could see Jesus, Mothers stood on tip toe to watch. There were lots of people who had been healed by Jesus – they had been blind, deaf, sick and disabled. They were so happy that they could praise Jesus. The people began to take off their coats and spread them out on the road ahead of Jesus for the donkey to walk on. They took branches from the palm trees  (hand out fern leaves)  and waved them. They threw flowers on the road for Jesus to ride over.  (Place lei around donkey’s head).  People began to sing “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.”  (Do it).  Everyone was shouting and singing praises to Jesus. They praised Jesus for all the wonderful miracles they had seen.  (Sing Praise Him, Praise Him). Some of the jealous Jewish priests were very cross. They knew the people were calling Jesus the Messiah. “Teacher!” They shouted from the edge of the road, “Tell these people to stop saying these things.” Jesus looked at them very sadly. He knew they did not want to believe that He really was the Messiah. They hated Him. “I can’t tell them that,” He answered. “If the people are quiet, then the stones along the road will cry out!” Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…59

It was time for everyone to know that Jesus was the Messiah – the One sent by God. It was time for everyone to make a choice. Who would believe in Jesus? It was good for the people to give praise to Jesus. It is good for us to do the same. We worship Jesus when we sing to Him and tell Him that we love Him. Song  We’re Praising Jesus  Tune: I’m Glad I came to Sabbath School LVPH 5 We’re praising Jesus when we sing We’re praising Jesus when we sing We’re praising Jesus when we sing On this bright Sabbath morning Other verses: We’re praising Jesus when we pray… We’re praising Jesus when we give… We’re praising Jesus when we listen… We worship when we’re praising Him… Debriefing  How do you think the people felt when they saw Jesus riding on the little donkey? What did the jealous priests think when they heard the people praising Jesus? How do you think Jesus felt riding that little donkey through the streets of Jerusalem? Do you want to praise Jesus, too? How can you praise Jesus? Remember our message? Say it with me:  We worship Jesus when we praise Him. Song  Choose another praise song to sing. Bible Study  Have a marker at Luke 19:28-40 in a Bible easily understood by the children. Let a child find the verses for you to read. Ask these questions?  What did Jesus ask two of His disciples to do? What did they put on the donkey for Jesus to sit on? What city did Jesus go into? How did the people praise Jesus? What did Jesus say would praise Him if the people didn’t? What would you like to praise Jesus for today? Remember,  We worship Jesus when we praise Him.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Praise Parade  Get the children ready to walk around in a big circle (outside if possible) and have each one think of something they want to praise Jesus for. (eg. My home, my dog, the sunshine, pretty flowers) Stand at the side and as each child comes past you they complete the 60…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

sentence “Praise Jesus for____. Everyone will repeat the sentence and step forward till all have had a turn. Song  Making Music  LVPH 220 Give out musical instruments if possible. Debriefing  Did you like being part of our Praise Parade? When can we praise Jesus? How does Jesus feel when he hears us praising him? How can we praise Jesus? We can praise Jesus for everything He gives us, for everything He does for us, and just for being Who He is – the king of the universe, God’s Son, and our Friend. We can praise Jesus when we pray and when we thank Him. We can praise Him by the way we act and the way we talk. When we really praise Him, people will see that we have Jesus in our heart. See, there are lots of ways we can praise Jesus. And best of all, we worship Jesus when we praise Him.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Praise Him  Ask a child which is their favourite praise song. Find out how many others agree. Sing that song. Repeat the questions and songs till all have sung their favourite. Debriefing  Did you enjoy singing praises to God? Praising Jesus makes us happy. It’s a way of saying thank you for all the good things He does for us. Now here is a way you can share the lesson we have learned today. I would like you to share how much you love God by singing your favourite praise song to someone during the week. I think you are smart enough to tell the story about people praising Jesus a long time ago and about how we can praise Him now.

6. CLOSING Closing Song  Your favourite praise song Closing Prayer Goodbye Song  It’s Time to Go  Child of the King 16 Remind the children to have a drink and go to the toilet before they go into church so they can enjoy praising Jesus during the service.

A Special Supper Lesson 10

We praise Jesus for what

WORSHIP He has done for us

REFERENCES John 13:1-17; Luke 22:15-19; The Bible Story, Vol 9. MEMORY VERSE “He now showed them His love” John 13:1. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know that Jesus did the work of a servant because He loves us. Feel thankful for Jesus’ great love. Respond by thinking of ways to thank Jesus for His love. THE MESSAGE We praise Jesus for showing us His love. This is a Lesson About Worship When Jesus washed his disciples’ feet He showed they how much He loved them. He wants us to follow His example of loving and unselfish service to others. When we show love to others, we praise Jesus for how much He loves us.

Room Decorations This week you have a wonderful opportunity to help the children understand the beauty and reason for the Lord’s Supper service. Plan with the head deaconess for the use of the ordinance cups and a basin and towel. Set up the table with communion bread and (grape) juice and cover it with a cloth.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  Choose one activity, a, b or c a. Communion Bread  Needed: Bring a bowl, flour, salt, water, measuring cup, rolling pin (or bottle) and a knife. Mix up the dough 62…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

and let the children take turns at kneading it. Then they can take turns at rolling it out on a tray before you mark it into small squares with the knife. Explain that this bread is different from the bread we buy, It will stay flat because it has no yeast in it to make it fluffy and tall. It is the kind of bread that was eaten every day by the people in Bible times. Debriefing  Who has enjoyed making bread this morning? How is this bread different from what you eat at home? This is special bread called communion bread. Do you know what communion is? It is a special service we have in church sometimes. It is when the adults eat a little piece bread and drink a little bit of grape juice. Do you know why they do it? It is to help us remember how much Jesus loves us. He did this with His disciples the night before He died on the cross. Today’s message is,  We praise Jesus for showing us His love.  Please say it with me.

OR b. Follow the Leader  Play “Follow the Leader.” Have the children walk around the room taking turns at being the leader. Debriefing  Did you have fun playing this game? Which part was best, being the leader or a follower? In our story today we will learn two things Jesus wants to follow Him in doing – washing one another’s feet and having communion with bread and grape juice. He did these things before He died to show His disciples how much He loved them. We do them to remember how much He loves us. Today’s message is  We praise Jesus for showing us His love.  Say it with me.

OR c. Showing His Love  Have pictures of the various ways Jesus shows His love; nature, animals, families, church, children doing things, etc. If your church has a copy of the special Sabbath School Picture book, use it. Ask  How does this picture remind you of Jesus’ love? Does Jesus show His love in just one way? You tell me some of the different ways we saw in the pictures. Today we will learn another way Jesus showed His love to His friends and to us. Let us close our eyes and say “Thank You Jesus for loving us in many different ways.” Repeat it after me.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to everyone, especially the visitors. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…63

Song  Welcome, Welcome Everyone  Child of the King 5 Praise Time  Choose a Sabbath Song and one or two others. Here are some suggestions for this month: God is so Good LVPH  88 Praise Him, Praise Him  LVPH 221 Praise Your God  LVPH 224 Just a Little Donkey  LVPH 137 Prayer Time  Use Prayer Song  “I Have Hands that Clap”  (LVPH 215) to prepare the children to pray. Sometimes have the children pray. Sometimes they will repeat your prayer. Remember to make use of the message for the week in your prayers. Mission Time  Use a story from “Children’s Mission”. Offering  Use the special offering container that suits the place where the offering is going this Quarter. Sing offering song  Here is My Money for Jesus  (LVPH 32). Birthdays  Work hard at getting the birth dates of all your class members. Write them on the growth charts, then a glance will tell you if you need to have this Birthday Segment in your program this week. Keep it short. Sing a birthday song, collect the birthday offering and pray for the child. Give them a simple card. Song  Count the birthday money  LVPH 37

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour John 13:1 and place a marker so a child can find the verse for you to read. Teach it using these actions: He - point upward now showed - hands out them - point to others His love - fold arms across chest John 13:1 - palms together then open. Sing  Tune:  Round and round the city. He now showed them His love He now showed them His love He now showed them his love John 13, verse one. Experiencing the Story  Have the bread and juice on the covered table. Have some water, a basin and towel ready. Ask a man to be the servant Jesus and another man, dressed in Bible-times clothes, to be Peter, the 64…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

storyteller. If possible place the table in the centre of the room with the children sitting in a circle. Ask the children to remove their shoes. Good morning. My name is Peter. I am one of Jesus’ friends. I want to tell you about a very special meal the twelve of us ate with Jesus. Jesus told John and me to go into the city and find a man carrying a jar of water. Carrying water is usually women’s work, so we knew it would be easy to see a man doing it. We had to ask him about a room where we could meet and share the special Passover meal. Sure enough, we found the man and he showed us a large room upstairs that we could use. Everything for the meal was ready. It looked something like this  (uncover table). I looked around the room. There was plenty of food. And there was a pot of water and a basin and some towels. But there was no servant to wash our feet. It was our custom to have a servant wash the visitors’ feet before they ate. We wear sandals and our roads are made of dirt, so our feet get really dirty walking around all day. Jesus and the rest of the disciples came into the room. I decided not to say anything about not having a servant. No one else mentioned it either. Everyone sat down. We were all ready to eat. We all looked round the room hoping a servant would appear. Everybody just sat there. No one got up to help. No one wanted to do the work of a servant. We were all too busy thinking about how we could become the greatest disciple. We wouldn’t ever think of washing someone’s feet! Then Jesus stood up  (Man does this).  He took off his coat. He wrapped a towel around His waist like an apron. He poured water into the basin and began to wash our feet!  (Man kneels in front of each child slowly wiping their feet with a towel as though washing and drying them). No one said anything. We all knew Jesus was the Son of God, our King. We all knew we should be washing His feet. I felt really embarrassed when He came to wash my feet. When Jesus finished and everyone’s feet were fresh and clean, He put His coat back on and sat down. Then He asked us, “Do you understand why I washed your feet?” Then He said something I will never forget. “I am your Teacher, I am your Lord. I am giving you an example of how I want you to treat other people. I want you to serve others. I want you to help people in the way they need to be helped. I want you to act as I do.” Wow! Jesus surely knew how to teach us a lesson we will always remember. It made us feel sad and ashamed for acting the way we had. We had been very selfish while Jesus had been so kind and loving. Jesus’ way is always the best way. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…65

Then Jesus blessed the bread and grape juice and passed it to us. The bread represents Jesus’ body and the grape juice, His blood. He told us to eat and drink and to do it often to help us remember him.  (Pour some juice and give some to each child, plus a small piece of the bread.) We were all very quiet because we had a lot to think about. Here was our best Friend Jesus acting as our servant and showing us His love one last time before He died. He promised us He was not going to drink grape juice again till He can share it with us in heaven. Today when we see people washing one another’s feet and eating and drinking the special bread and grape juice, remember Jesus’ unselfish life and death on the cross. Let us remember to treat other people with love just as Jesus did. Let us love others as much as Jesus loves us. Let us always praise Him for His love. Debriefing  In Bible times, what did people do for visitors before they ate? How did Jesus serve His friends? What special food do people eat in church to help us remember Him? Why? What does Jesus want us to remember?  (To serve others first, that He loves us, that He died for us).  Jesus showed His love for His friends and for us when he shared that last meal with them. Let us always remember our message for today and praise Jesus for showing us His love. Bible Study  You will need two book marks today for John 13: 1-17 and Luke 22:15-19. Choose some verses to read from each passage. What two disciples did Jesus send to make arrangements for the Passover meal? Where did Jesus eat this meal? Who was with Him? What did Jesus do to show them His love? Jesus knew that putting others first is the happy way to live. And He also knew we needed some way to remember that He died for us. So He ate the Last Supper with His friends and explained what the bread and grape juice mean. Can you tell me what they mean? Jesus wants us to remember that He loves us. He wants us to praise Him for showing us His love. Song  Sing the memory verse,  “He now showed them His love.”  John 13:1.

4, APPLYING THE LESSON Praise Jar  Make a “Praise Jar” with pieces of paper in it that tell what the children would like to praise Jesus for. Shake the Jar. One at a time take the folded papers out and read the praises. Sing    Let’s Give the Lord our Praise  or 66…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

Song  another favourite praise song LVPH 219.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Sharing God’s Love  Have the children hold up one hand and name five ways Jesus shows His love to their family. Repeat them touching each finger with the other hand. Then say  We praise Jesus for _____” while pointing to each finger. Suggest that when they have family worship at home they could talk about these five ways and maybe even think up another five ways. Remind them to ask Jesus to help them share His love with others this coming week.

6. CLOSING Song  Jesus Loves Me  LVPH 102. Closing Prayer Goodbye Song  It’s Time to Go  Child of the King 16

Jesus Loves Me Lesson 11

We praise Jesus for what

WORSHIP He has done for us

REFERENCES Luke 22:39-46, verses 54 to 23:25; The Bible Story. MEMORY VERSE “You are worthy, God, to receive glory, honour and power.“ Revelation 4:11. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know that Jesus suffered for us because he loves us. Feel sorry because people did bad things to Jesus. Respond by telling someone that Jesus loves them, too. THE MESSAGE We praise Jesus for doing hard things for us. This is a Lesson About Worship Jesus went through terrible things for us. Left alone by His friends, betrayed by his disciples, tortured and mocked by those He created, and worried that He might be separated from His Father for eternity. Because Jesus loved us, He endured all this to save us. How could we not worship Him?

Room Decorations Leave your home, but make an area for a garden of Gethsemane with plants and flowers.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES Time to Pray  Show a picture of Jesus praying (use a picture roll) or someone else praying. Jesus knew that He needed to pray every day or Satan would trick Him into doing something naughty. We need to pray, too. Show me 68…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

your hands. Let’s count some of the things we should pray for. You can number them on your fingers. 1. Pray in the morning and ask Jesus to take care of us. 2. Pray before we eat to thank Jesus for our food. 3. Pray when we need help. 4. Pray thank- you prayers for all the good things Jesus does for us. 5. Pray when someone in our family is sick. 6. Ask God to forgive us if we have been naughty. 7. Pray for the people we know who do not love Jesus. Jesus tells us to pray any time we need help or if we just want to say thank you. Jesus loves us and He loves to listen to our prayers. When do you pray? Today our story is about Jesus praying in a garden. Jesus was asking for help because He had to do something very hard. Because Jesus loves us he did hard things for us. Our message says:  We praise Jesus for doing hard things for us.  Say it with me. Song  Whisper a Prayer  LVPH 233 Something Hard  Mark out two lines about 2 metres apart. Have the children take turns trying to jump the distance. Debriefing  Did you have fun trying to jump past the second line? Was anyone able to jump that far? Was it easy or hard? Hard things remind me of our Bible story today. Its about the hard things Jesus had to do for us. He was willing to do them because he loves us so much. Let us praise Jesus for doing hard things for us. Can you say that?

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to everyone, especially the visitors. Song  Welcome, Welcome Everyone  Child of the King 5 Praise Time  Choose a Sabbath Song and one or two others. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…69

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour the verse (Revelation 4:11) and place a marker in the page so a child may find it for you to read aloud, then teach it to the children using these actions: You are worthy, God - point upward to receive - hands outstretched glory and honour - wiggle fingers while raising hands and power - arms up to show muscles Revelation 4:11 - palms together, then open. Experiencing the Story  Have the same person as last week, dressed as Peter, tell the story. Have the children practice saying “But Jesus loved them” and “But Jesus loved you” when you give the cue. Be ready to help them during the story. Have a crown of thorns to show. Hi! I’m Peter. It’s nice to see you again today. You’ll remember that I’m one of Jesus’ friends. I want to tell you about the night that Jesus was taken away from us. After our special meal together that I told you about last week, we went for a walk. We went out of the city to one of Jesus’ favourite spots, the garden of Gethsemane where there were lots of beautiful olive trees. “We need to pray for strength against Satan,” Jesus said. “Please pray with me.” Then Jesus went further into the garden and prayed. He knew that He was going to die very soon. This was the reason God had sent Jesus to this world. He was going to die for everyone’s sins. We heard Jesus praying out loud: “Father, I don’t want to suffer, but if it is Your will, I will do it.” Jesus prayed and prayed all through the night. 70…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

God sent an angel from heaven to speak kind words of comfort and hope to Jesus. Jesus knew then that He could do what God asked. He would do hard things for us. Three times in the night, Jesus came back to us and found us all asleep. Can you believe that? Just when Jesus needed us most, we were fast asleep.  (Children say “But Jesus loved them!”) Well, very soon, the Jewish leaders and priests came with soldiers into the garden to get Jesus. They took him to the high priest’s house. I followed far behind. I know Jesus would have liked me to be with Him, but I was afraid.  (Children say, “But Jesus loved you.”) I followed them into the yard of the big house and went near the fire that the guards had lit to warm themselves. A servant girl pointed at me and said, “He is one of Jesus’ followers!” My heart nearly stopped! I was so afraid that I said, “I don’t even know Jesus!”  (Children say, “But Jesus loved you.”)  Three times people asked me if I knew Jesus and three times I said “No.”  (Children say, “But Jesus loved you.”)  On the other side of the yard, Jesus heard my words. After the third time he turned around and looked right at me. His eyes were filled with sadness, but also with forgiveness and love.  (Children say, “But Jesus loved you.”)  Suddenly I felt terrible. I was so ashamed I ran out of the yard and cried and cried. When the sun began to come up, the leaders of the Jewish people gathered together. They wanted Jesus to die because He said He was the Son of God. They thought that was the right thing to do to someone who called himself God.  (Children say, “But Jesus loved them.”) The Jewish leaders took Jesus to the Roman ruler and told him lies about Jesus. Pilate didn’t believe the lies, but he was afraid of the Jewish leaders, so he was afraid to let Jesus go.  (Children say, “But Jesus loved Him.”) Outside a big crowd of people screamed, “Kill Him! Kill Him!”  (Children say, “But Jesus loved them.”) Finally Pilate agreed to do what the Jewish leaders and the crowd wanted. Pilate had a soldier beat Jesus with a whip, and then the other soldiers took him away.  (Children say, “But Jesus loved them.”) The soldiers dressed Jesus in a purple robe like a king’s robe. They made a crown of thorns  (show it)  and put it on His head and made it bleed. They knelt down and made fun of Jesus and pretended to worship Him. Then they spat on Him.  (Children say, “But Jesus loved them.”) Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…71

It was really awful. But Jesus didn’t try to get away. He didn’t fight back or argue about the lies being told about him. Jesus was very, very sad, but He wasn’t angry with the leaders or the soldiers or the people in the crowd. And Jesus forgave me and the others who loved Him but were scared. Jesus was willing to do whatever had to do to save us. God gave Him the power when He prayed. Praise Jesus for the hard things He did to save us! Praise Jesus that He forgives us and loves us! Debriefing  Why did Peter, who loved Jesus very much, say he didn’t know Him? What would you have done if you were surrounded by people shouting to have Jesus killed? If people were being unkind to you and telling lies about you, would you have forgiven them? How did Jesus treat those who were His enemies? Was it easy for Jesus to do those hard things? Why did He do them? Are you glad Jesus was willing to suffer those hard things so we could have our sins forgiven? What can we do to show we thank Him? Remember our message?  We praise Jesus for doing hard things for us. I think we understand our memory verse better now. Let us say it together with actions. “You are worthy, God, to receive glory and honour and power.” Revelation 4:11 Bible Study  Place a marker at Luke 22-23 in the Bible the children best understand and have a child find it for you to read aloud. Read some verses that tell the story, and answer these questions. Where did Jesus go to pray? Who did He ask to pray with Him? What did His friends do instead? Who came to comfort Jesus? How did the Jewish leaders treat Jesus? How did Jesus treat them? What was the name of the Roman ruler? Jesus suffered for us because he loves us. He was willing to do whatever was needed to save us from sin. I’m so glad He did these hard things, aren’t you? Let us praise Him by saying our memory verse again.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Hard Thing I’ll do for Jesus  Remember the game we played to begin Sabbath School this morning when we had to try and jump over the second line? Some things are hard for us to do. Some things are hard because we have never done them before. We might have to practice so we can learn to do them well. Now I want you to tell me some things I can write on this paper. I want you to tell me what you are willing to do for Jesus, because 72…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

you love Him. I’ll give you some ideas. Put up your hand if I say something you would like to do. Learn the memory verse each week Obey Mama and Papa Be kind to brother/sister Cheerfully help with jobs that need doing Be nice to people who are not nice to you Tell someone why you love Jesus Sit quietly in church and listen Remember, Jesus has promised to help you do these things because he loves you. And you will show you love Jesus when you do them. Debriefing  Are these things like the hard things Jesus did for us? How will doing these things help you to be more like Jesus? Do you think you can do some of these things during this week? Why will you do them? Jesus did some very hard things for us because He loves us. We praise Him for doing those hard things. If He didn’t do them, we could never have our sins forgiven and we could never go to heaven to live with Him. Isn’t he a wonderful Jesus?

5. SHARING THE LESSON Discuss which of the items listed in Applying the Lesson, each child would like to try to do during the week because they love Jesus. Encourage the children to pray small prayers for help to do what they want to try. Tell them you will be praying for them, too.

6. CLOSING Song  God is so Good  LVPH 88. Closing Prayer Goodbye Song  It’s Time to Go  Child of the King 16 Remind the children to have a drink and go to the toilet before they go into church so it will be easier for them to sit quietly and listen.

1. READINESS ACTIVITY Jesus’ Cross  Prepare some materials from which the children can each make a cross Use, ice block sticks or sticks or whatever you can find. Have the children lash the pieces together to make a cross. Debriefing  What did you like best about making a cross? What does 74…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

it tell you about Jesus? Our story today is about Jesus dying on the cross. We can be so glad that He was willing to do that for us so our sins can be forgiven. But the really good news is that Jesus didn’t stay dead. He came back to life. He is alive now, taking care of all His big family. That includes you and me, too. That’s REALLY good news. Today’s message is:  We praise Jesus because He died and rose again.  Say it with me.

that Jesus - point upward died - make cross with index fingers and rose again - lift hands upward 1 Thessalonians 4:14 - palms together, then open. Sing  Tune: With Jesus in the Family LVPH 273 Experiencing the Story  See Room Decorations for preparation. The children are to repeat “He did it for me” when you give them the cue during the story. Have an adult help them practice and lead them in saying it together. Practice the story so you can read or tell it with meaning. Roman soldiers took Jesus up on a hill. In those days the Roman soldiers punished criminals by nailing them to wooden crosses. It was called crucifixion. The soldiers put Jesus’ cross on the ground. They shoved Him down on it. They nailed Jesus to the cross with big nails in His hands and feet.  (Children say, “He did it for me’).  Then they lifted the cross up and dropped the bottom of it into a hole in the ground. Jesus looked at the soldiers and prayed. ”Father, forgive these people. They don’t know what they are doing.”  (Children: ‘He did it for me’). The cruel Jewish leaders looked up at Jesus and laughed. They said, “He saved other people, but He can’t save himself!”  (Children: ‘He did it for me’). The soldiers laughed at Jesus, too. They put a sign on the cross above Jesus’ head. The sign said “This is the King of the Jews.”  (Children: ‘He did it for me’). Two robbers hung on crosses next to Jesus – one on each side. One of the robbers began to make fun of Jesus.  (Children: ‘He did it for me’).  But the other robber shouted at him, “We did bad things. We deserve to die! But this man hasn’t done anything wrong!” Then he asked Jesus to remember him. And Jesus promised him that one day he would be in heaven. At noontime the sun disappeared. The sky became dark as night. It was really scary. The people wondered what was happening. Why was the sky so dark in the middle of the day? Then the earth began to shake and thunder crashed all around. Then Jesus, the Messiah, the Saviour of the world died.  (Children: ‘He did it for me’). Joseph who was a good man and a friend of Jesus, took Jesus’ body down from the cross. He wrapped it in a long cloth and put it in a new grave cut out from the side of a hill. A big rock was rolled was rolled 76…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

in front of the doorway to seal it. And then the sun went down and it was Sabbath. Jesus friends rested on the Sabbath day. They were so sad and disappointed. They had been sure that Jesus was the Messiah, but now he was dead! They thought they would never see him again. They didn’t understand. What were they going to do now? Very early Sunday morning, when it was beginning to get light and the birds began to stretch their wings and sing, some of the women who loved Jesus went to the grave. They carried sweet-smelling spices to put on Jesus’ body. Tears ran down their faces as they walked along. Suddenly Mary spoke. Her voice trembled as she pointed. “Look! The stone that closed up the doorway has been rolled away! Who has done this?” Then they saw two shining angels standing there. That made them feel really frightened. But they saw that the angels were smiling. “Why are you looking in a grave for someone who is alive?” they said. “Don’t you remember that Jesus told you He would be crucified but that he would rise again after three days?”  (Children: ‘He did it for me’). Those women who loved Jesus were the very first people to hear the good news that Jesus was alive. Quickly they ran back to tell their friends. Everyone was so excited that the good news spread quickly.  (Children: ‘He did it for me’). Yes, Jesus is alive today. And the good news is still spreading around the world that He loves us. He really, really, REALLY loves us. Jesus died for everybody’s sins. And He rose up from the dead. We call it the resurrection. Jesus is in heaven right now. One day soon He will come and take everyone who loves Him to live with Him up there. Song  Jesus is Alive Tune: Farmer in the Dell Debriefing  When He was on the cross, what did Jesus say about the people who were mean to Him? How did the women feel when they saw the grave was empty? How did they feel after the angels talked to them? What did Jesus do for you? Why did He do it? Where is He going to take us when He comes back again? Do you remember our message? Let’s say it together:  We praise Jesus because He died and rose again. Now let us say and sing our memory verse, “We believe that Jesus died and rose again” 1 Thessalonians 4:14. Bible Study  Place a marker in your Bible at Luke 23: 26 to 24: 12 so a child can find the story for you to read. Read some of the verse that answer these questions. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…77

How did Jesus die? What did the sign over Jesus’ head say? What did the earth do when Jesus died? Who took care of Jesus’ body after he died? When did Jesus come back to life again? Who went to the grave early Sunday morning? Who talked to them there? What did the angels say? What did the women do? Is Jesus alive now? Are you glad? Let’s repeat the message:  We praise Jesus because He died and rose again.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON  Needed:  Blackboard, chalk and duster. Ask the children to tell you some wrong things that children do and list them on the board. Jesus died to take away our sins so we could go to Heaven with Him. As you read each item on the list have the children say “He did it for me” as you wipe away the sins one by one. Song  You are So Special  Arnie’s Shack, disc 2, 13 Debriefing  Are you glad that Jesus wants to forgive our sins? He just wipes them away when we are truly sorry and ask him to forgive us. How does it feel to know Jesus loves you so much? Who wants to go to heaven to live with Jesus? It is because Jesus died and rose again that we can go to heaven. He will come for us soon. Let us praise Him with our message:  We praise Jesus because He died and rose again.

5. SHARING THE LESSON If you have paper and pencils, give each child a paper on which to draw a hill and three crosses. Underneath you can write “Jesus died for me.” Who died on the middle cross? Who were on the other crosses? Why did Jesus die? Is He still dead? What happened? Is that good news? Can you be like the women who saw the angels and run to tell someone the good news? Who will you tell? Show them your picture and tell them that Jesus loves them very much. You can practice right now. Turn to the person next to you, show them your picture and say “Jesus loves you.”  (Give time for them to do this).

OBJECTIVES The children will: Know Jesus has prepared a wonderful home for us. Feel excited about going to live with Jesus. Respond by thanking Jesus for his gift of heaven. THE MESSAGE We praise Jesus for His gift of heaven. This is a Lesson About Worship Heaven is a special gift for those who love God. Jesus paid a big price for us to be in heaven with Him. We want to thank Him and praise Him for His wonderful gift.

Room Decorations Have a beautiful garden scene with tree branches, flowers, toy animals, large Jesus and some kind of “mansion” in the background. If you have the flannel graph set, build up a heaven scene.

1. READINESS ACTIVITY Heaven Quiz  Use pictures in the resource section. Colour the pictures nicely. Hold up the page for the children to see. Point to the items one at a time and let them tell you if it will be seen in heaven. Let them cross out those things that wont be there. (Crying, sores, fighting, dying). Debriefing  Heaven is going to be such a wonderful place to live. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…79

What do you think you will do first in heaven?  (Get their ideas).  Who do you want to see? Who else? What kind of house will you live in? What is your favourite thing about heaven? Do you know that heaven is a special gift Jesus will give to those who love him? Who wants to thank Jesus for giving us heaven? Our message today is:  We praise Jesus for His gift of heaven.  Let’s say it together.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to everyone, especially the visitors. Song  Welcome, Welcome Everyone  Child of the King 5 Praise Time  Choose a Sabbath Song and one or two others. Here are some suggestions for this month: God is so Good  LVPH 88 Praise Him, Praise Him  LVPH 221 Praise Your God  LVPH 224 Just a Little Donkey  LVPH 137 You are So Special  Arnie’s Shack, disc 2, 13 Prayer Time  Use Prayer Song  “I Have Hands that Clap”  (LVPH 215) to prepare the children to pray. Sometimes have the children pray. Sometimes they will repeat your prayer. Remember to make use of the message for the week in your prayers. Mission Time  Use a story from “Children’s Mission”. Offering  Use the special offering container that suits the place where the offering is going this Quarter. Sing offering song –  Here is My Money for Jesus  (LVPH 32). to a new heaven - point up 2 Peter 3;13 - palms together, then open. Sing  Tune:  With Jesus in the Family  LVPH 273 Oh, we are looking forward to a new heaven To a new heaven, to a new heaven Oh, we are looking forward to a new heaven Second Peter three, verse 13. Experiencing the Story  Have the children copy your actions as you tell the story. Have the song aids ready to use. Show your Bible. The Bible tells us about a special place called heaven. It is awesome! It is where God and Jesus and the angels live. It is so beautiful that you can’t even imagine it! One very happy day we will look up in the sky  (shade eyes and look up)  and see Jesus coming in big fluffy clouds with lots of angels. He will come to take us home to heaven to live with Him. The rivers in heaven will be the bluest water you’ve ever seen. You can just jump in the water  (jump)  and you won’t ever be cold and shiver  (hands by side and shiver).  The grass will be the greenest and softest and thickest to squish between your toes. You can run and skip and fall down on it and not even get hurt! The Bible says Jesus will wipe away all our tears. That means we will never get hurt or be sad in heaven. No more cuts and scratches or bumped heads and sore throats, no more fever. No more people or flowers or animals dying. And that’s not all! The trees grow the sweetest and most delicious fruit you’ve ever tasted. We will eat special fruit from a tree called the tree of life. You can pick a different fruit from it every month  (pretend to reach up and pick fruit).  What is your favourite fruit?  (Let them tell you).  Heaven’s fruit will be even more delicious! The really special thing is that the tress will keep growing forever and ever. That’s a very long time. Let me tell you about the animals in heaven. Yes, there will be cats and dogs to play with like you do here. But there will be lions and tigers and bears that wont scare you or hurt you. And the monkeys and squirrels wont run away. They’ll let you hold them and snuggle up with them  (Pretend to hold and stroke an animal). Do you know where you are going to live in heaven? The Bible says that Jesus is building beautiful mansions for us. Do you know what a mansion is? It is a big, beautiful house like the Queen lives in. Our mansions will be very special houses. And do you know what the Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…81

streets are made of? Gold! Can you imagine walking on streets made of gold?  (Walk in place).  Heaven is a really wonderful place. Song  Heaven - Tune: Sabbath is a Happy Day LVPH 235 Do you like listening to stories? Did you know we will be able to listen to lots of stories in heaven. Noah and Daniel and Jonah and Joseph and Jesus will tell us stories. There will be lots of other people in heaven too, with great stories to tell us. And you’ll be able to see your family there. There is someone else you will be really happy to meet: Your guardian angel will be there for you to talk to, the one who is always with you taking care of you. You will have friends there to play with all day long! Something else: we’ll never have to say good bye again. We will all be together forever. Song  Heaven is a Happy Place  LVPH 131 What do you think we will wear in heaven? The Bible says we are going to wear white robes and pretty crowns with gold and pretty jewels on them  (Show crown).  Jesus is going to place the crowns on our heads. He will be so happy to have us there. Did you know that heaven is a special gift from Jesus? We can’t buy heaven. Jesus gives it to the people who love Him. Heaven is such a wonderful gift that we want to share it with our friends. Let’s tell others about Jesus so they can love Him, too and be in heaven too.  (Hands together).  Thank you, Jesus for the wonderful gift of heaven. You are so good to us. Debriefing  What will you see in heaven? Who will be in heaven? What won’t be in heaven? If you had lots of money, could you buy heaven? Why not? How will we get to heaven? Do you want to go to heaven? Why? What do you want to do in heaven? What will be the best part about heaven? I think the best part will be to be with Jesus forever. Remember:  We praise Jesus for His gift of heaven.  Let’s all say it. Bible Study  Place a marker in Revelation 21, 22 and ask a child to find the place for you to read. Read Rev. 21:1, 3, 4 and Rev. 22:1, 2. The Bible has lots to say about heaven, but we don’t have time to read it all just now. What do you think about going to heaven? How will life be different in heaven? What will be your favourite thing there? Remember that Jesus died for you so that you can go to heaven. Heaven is a special place that will be even more wonderful than you can ever imagine. Let’s say and sing our memory verse: “We are looking forward to a new heaven” 1 Peter 3:13. 82…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Heavenly Gift  In a box, place these objects or pictures of them: a piece of fruit (Tree of life); flower (things will never die); toy animal (animals to play with); watch or clock (we will live forever); crown (Jesus will give us one); picture of Jesus (we will be able to see and talk with Him). Wrap the box in pretty paper. If possible, wrap the lid separately so you just have to lift the lid to see what is inside. Show the box and ask  What do I have here? Do you like to receive gifts? Let’s see what special gifts Jesus will give us in heaven.  Children open the box and different ones are invited to hold up a picture or object:  What is this? How does it remind you of heaven? Debriefing  Do you think you will like Jesus’ gift of heaven? Who do you want to see most of all? Tell us why. What kind of face do people have when they are ready to meet Jesus?  (Happy, smiling ones).  Show me. Remember,  We praise Jesus for his gift of heaven. Sing  Heaven  Tune: Sabbath is a Happy Day LVPH 235

5. SHARING THE LESSON Heavenly Crowns  Prepare a crown for each child. You can make paper ones or you can weave them from a coconut leaf. Let the children decorate them and sing “I will wear a Crown” as they march around the room. Debriefing  Will you enjoy wearing your crown in heaven? What will that crown be made of? Who will put it on your head? Won’t it be just the happiest day? Did you know that when we help someone learn to love Jesus, Jesus puts a star on our golden crown? Take this crown home to remind you of the special gift Jesus has promised to everyone who loves Him. Do you know someone who hasn’t made Jesus his special friend? You could give them the crown and tell them about heaven. You could invite them to be ready to go with you. Remember,  We praise Jesus for His gift of heaven.
