To Help You

To the Leaders/Teachers

We’re so glad that you have agreed to be a leader for the Kindergarten children in your church. You have a wonderful opportunity to share God’s grace with them and encourage them to choose Jesus for their best Friend, as you have done. • The Kindergarten division includes children from 3-6 years of age. • Before each quarter begins get together the people who will help you • Share this program with them and decide what each person will do. • Collect and prepare the materials suggested in the program. • Ask your church board for a budget to purchase special materials. • Decorate your room – make it interesting and attractive • Begin preparing each program a week beforehand. This gives you time to listen to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. • Every week write the new Message and Memory Verse on a large sheet of paper and hang it up where all the children can see it. • The memory verses are from the NIV translation of the Bible, so it would be good to have one of those to colour the verse each week. • Class sets needed for this quarter are: Tool set: hammer, saw, axe, paint brushes, tape measure, etc Helping set: broom, rake, scrubbing brush, tea towel, dust pan, etc Doctor set: toy stethoscope, syringe, bandage, band-aid, cotton wool, medicine bottle or packet, etc • Remember to pray for each child, each helper and yourself every day. • Be early on Sabbath morning and let the children see you really love them as Jesus does. Before the quarter begins, obtain regularly used supplies such as: • Bibles • large paper-newsprint, or card board • regular-sized paper • pencils, pens, markers, crayons, coloured pencils • Other art supplies available to you (examples: glue sticks, scissors). • old shirts or t-shirts for costumes Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…5

The Little Prince Lesson 1

COMMUNITY We help each other

REFERENCES 2 Kings 11. MEMORY VERSE “Love each other like brothers and sisters.” Romans 12:10. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know that they can help protect others. Feel sympathy for those who are treated wrongly. Respond by standing up for those who are mistreated. THE MESSAGE In God’s family, we love and protect each other. This is a Lesson About Community Families in a Christian community love and protect each other. They do all they can to help one another.

Room Decorations Set up the front of the room to look like a room in a palace with a chair draped in purple or red cloth for a throne. This will be used all month.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES   (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Church Helpers  Talk about the many kinds of people who come to church. As the children tell you these, write them in a list on paper or blackboard eg pastor, deacons, teachers, singers, deaconess, mothers, fathers, boys, girls, etc. Debriefing  How do these people help us in church?  (Parents bring their children, teachers help us learn about the Bible, pastors tell us about God, deacons collect the offering and care for the church, etc)  How do the people in your family protect each other? Does it 6…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

make you feel safe to be a part of your family? People in the church are God’s big family. They care for and protect one another. Our story today is about a family that protected a baby. Today’s message is:  In God’s family, we love and protect each other.

OR b. Mystery boxes  Prepare a flannel board with a church on it, plus a set of small boxes or packets with a felt or picture of a person in each one – woman, man, boy, girl, cripple, preacher, old person, etc. Hide these in easy places around the room and have the children find them. Debriefing  (name of child)  please open your box and show us what is inside.  (have each child hold up their figure as they open their packet).  One person in a church would be lonely. So let’s put all our people on the flannel board in front of this church. It takes many people of all ages to make up a church. A church is people, not just a building. People in the church, in God’s family will love and protect each other. The Bible story today is a about a family protecting a baby. Our message today is,  In God’s family, we love and protect each other.  Let’s all say it.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to those who do not attend regularly as well as any visitors. Song  Gidday, Gidday  Child of the King CD 3 Praise Time  Choose a Sabbath song and one or two others. Encourage the children to pray. Song  Get Ready to Pray  LVPH 8 Mission  Use “Children’s Mission” or some other Mission story. It is good to have an offering chart or a map showing the place where our offering is to this quarter. Use a special offering container. Remind the children that giving an offering is a way we show we care for others in God’s family. Offering  Here is My Money for Jesus,  Child of the King 13 and have a Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…7

thank you prayer. Birthdays  Do you have a list of the children’s birthdays so you know when to make time for this part of the program? Use a special birthday offering box. Sing a birthday song (Happy Birthday LVPH 39), pray for the child, and give them a card.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour Romans 12:10 in your Bible and place a marker there so a child can find it for you. Read it aloud. Teach it with these actions: Love - cross arms over chest each other - point to others like brothers - point to boy and sisters - point to girl Romans 12:10 - palms together, then open Song  Memory Verse Song - Tune  “I’m Glad I came to Sabbath School”  LVPH 5 Love each other like brothers and sisters Love each other like brothers and sisters Love each other like brothers and sisters Romans twelve, verse ten. Experiencing the Story  Today our story from the Bible is about how God kept a little boy named Joash safe from a bad woman named Queen Athaliah. When I say Athaliah, I want you to point your thumbs down and say “Boo!” When I say Joash, I want you to clap your hands and say “Long live the King!” Let’s practise that before we begin the story.  (OR you may choose to have the children just act the story as you tell it) Prince Joash lived in the royal palace in Israel. But even though Prince Joash was a prince, he still needed someone to protect him. He needed to be protected from Athaliah the bad queen. Queen Athaliah was very bad and she was very angry. She wanted to hurt all the princes in Israel who might be king one day. There was no way Joash could protect himself from Queen Athaliah because he was just a baby. Now, Joash had a kind aunt named Je-hosh-e-bah who lived in the Temple with her husband, Je-hoi-a-dah, the priest. God helped Jehoshebah make a plan to rescue Joash before Queen Athaliah could hurt him. When no one was looking, she took the baby boy and 8…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

his nurse to the temple and hid them in a bedroom there. Sh-h-h! Don’t let anyone find them! For six long years (can you count them with me?) I, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 years Joash lived in the temple with Aunt Jehoshebah and Uncle Jehoiadah. Every day his nurse looked after him and uncle and Auntie kept them hidden from bad Queen Athaliah. They could not go outside to play. They had to keep quiet all the time. They could not let anyone know who was hiding in the temple. But Aunt Jehoshebah and Uncle Jehoiadah often told little Joash that one day he would be the king – the king of Israel. And finally, when he was only seven, Uncle Jehoiadah decided it was time to crown Joash as King. Jehoiadah called soldiers to the temple. He said. “Prince Joash is still alive. We have been protecting him from Queen Athaliah for 6 years. Today we are going to crown him king of Israel. I need you to stand around him and keep him safe.” “We will be happy to do that,” said the soldiers. “Athaliah is a very bad queen. Joash is our real king. Long live King Joash. We will keep him safe from Athaliah.” Soon after that Uncle Jehoiadah led Prince Joash out of the temple. A crowd of people gathered to see what was happening. Just as they had promised, the soldiers gathered around the little boy who would become their king. Uncle Jehoiadah poured sweet-smelling oil on Joash’s head. He gave Joash a copy of the law and proclaimed him king. The crowd watched quietly as Jehoiadah put the crown on Joash’s head. Then all the people cheered and shouted, “Long live the King!” The trumpeters blew their trumpets, and the singers led songs of praise. Everyone was happy that Joash had become their king. Queen Athaliah heard all the noise and came running to the temple. There she saw the boy who had just been crowned king! She was really surprised. And she was very, very angry. She ordered the soldiers to grab King Joash and take him away. But the soldiers grabbed her instead and took her away. She was no longer the queen. Joash was the new king. He would be safe now. He sat on the royal throne and ruled over Israel. And he was a good king who helped his people to know God again. And he never forgot his good Aunt Jehosheba and uncle Jehoiadah who kept him safe till he could be king. Debriefing  Why do you think Jehosheba and Jehoiada hid Joash for so many years? Is it easy or hard to keep a baby quiet? Do you think you would be ready to be a king when you have had 7 birthdays? How Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…9

do you think he felt when Athaliah saw him? How could you protect who needed help? Do you remember our message?  In God’s family, we love and protect each other.  Let’s say it together. Song  When we all Work together (in Pidgin, too, with actions) Bible Study  Have a marker in your Bible (a version the children understand) for a child to find 2 Kings 1. Read a few verses that tell the story. Ask:  How long did Jehoshiba and Jehoiada hide Joash? Where did they hide him? How old was Joash when he became king? What did the people shout when he was crowned king? Was Athalia happy or angry when she saw Joash? Was Joash a good king? How do we know?

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Protecting Others   Discuss these scenes with the children: 1. You are playing ball with your friend. It rolls onto the road. Your friend races after it. You see a car coming. What can you do to protect your friend? 2. Your baby brother wakes up and you see him trying to climb out of his cot. How can you protect him? 3. It is raining when you come out of church so you open your umbrella. Then you see an old grandmother with no umbrella. How can you protect her? Debriefing  Who was in danger and needed protecting in each of these stories? Do you think it is a good idea to help people who are in danger? Why? How do you know when someone needs help and protection? In your family, who protects you? Who could you protect? What are some ways you can protect younger children? How can you help keep others safe when they play with things they shouldn’t? Who wants us to help protect other people? Remember our message:  In God’s family, we love and protect each other.  Let’s say it again. Song  We are the Church  Spirit Alive CD 16

5. SHARING THE LESSON Hand out pieces of paper and have the children draw a picture of themselves, holding the hand of someone at church they could protect. Remind them that people in our church and in God’s family love and 10…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

protect each other because they are just like brothers and sisters. Suggest they take their picture and share it with someone as they tell the story of how Uncle and Auntie protected Joash in the Temple. Repeat the message together,  In God’s family, we love and protect each other.

Repairing the Temple Lesson 2

COMMUNITY We help each other

REFERENCES 2 Kings 12:1-15; 2 Chronicles 24:1-14. MEMORY VERSE “Work together as a team for the faith.” Philippians 1:27. 0BJECTIVES The children will: Know that they can join with others to work for God. Feel they are part of the community working for God. Respond by being willing to work with others. MESSAGE In God’s family, we work together. This is a Lesson About Community God is honoured when his children work together happily. Even children can bring an offering to help take care of God’s house. They can also help by keeping God’s house, the church, clean.

Room Decorations Same as last week.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Tug ‘o War  Needed: a strong male, a length of rope. Ask a small child to try and pull the man who is holding the rope. When he cannot do it say,  That didn’t work, did it? It was too hard for  (name of child).  What can we do now?  Allow other volunteers to try. Keep asking,  What can we do now?  until they suggest using more than one child. Keep adding a child until they can pull the man from where he was standing. 12…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

Debriefing  What did we just do? How did we make it happen? We can do really hard things when we all work together! When only one of us puts in some offering, it can’t do very much, but when we all bring some we can do great things for God. Today our story is about people working together to honour God. What does honour mean? It means to be respectful. Today’s message is:  In God’s family, we work together.

OR b. Orchestra:  Song  When We All Work Together First sing the song alone and try to do the actions without a partner. When we all work together, together, together When we all work together, how happy we’ll be When your work is my work and our work is God’s work When we all work together, how happy we’ll be. Then have the children sing and do the actions in pairs. Then have them sing in Pidgin with the actions. Then have them do the actions without any sound. Debriefing  Which sounded the best? When I sang by myself? When we did the actions with out singing? Or when we were singing and doing the actions together? Which was the most fun? Why? It is fun doing things together, isn’t it? We can do great things for God when we work together. We can really praise God when we sing together. Our Bible story today tells about a time when people worked together to honour God. What does honour mean? It means to be respectful. Our message today is:  In God’s family, we work together.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to those who do not attend regularly as well as any visitors. Offering  Here is My Money for Jesus,  Child of the King 13 and have a thank you prayer. Birthdays  Do you have a list of the children’s birthdays so you know when to make time for this part of the program? Use a special birthday offering box. Sing a birthday song  (Happy Birthday  LVPH 39), pray for the child, and give them a card.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Underline the words in Philippians 1:27 that are our memory verse. Let a child find it for you to read. Teach it using these actions: Work together - pretend to pull a rope with both hands as a team - clasp hands over head for the faith - point upward Philippians 1:27 - palms together, then open. Song  Memory Verse Song - Tune: Mary Had a Little Lamb. Work together as a team, for the faith, for the faith Work together as a team Philippians one, 27. Experiencing the Story  Needed: decorated box with offering hole in the top, carpenter’s tools, paint brushes (Make them yourself from bush materials), crown for Joash, pieces of money. Characters  Joash (adult), Priests, workers, people. Give the workers a tool and give the people some money. Practise the story till you can tell it well. King Joash went to God’s Temple with Jehoiada and some other priests. They stood in the middle of the Temple and looked around  (Do it.)  They shook their heads sadly. Everything was such a mess. Walls were broken, and there was dirt all over the place. Some of the furniture needed mending, too. Priest Jehoiada explained to King Joash what had happened. During the time when wicked kings and queens had ruled over Israel they did not spend any money to look after the temple. In fact, some of the 14…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

kings had pulled down parts of the temple walls and used the stones to build places where they worshipped idols. And the sons of bad Queen Athaliah had even taken the holy gold and silver dishes used in the temple and used them to worship their idols. Do you think God was happy about that? “Alright,” said King Joash, “It is time we fixed the Temple so people can see we honour God and His house. We will need timber and stones and cement. It is going to cost a lot of money to make it look nice again.” “Where will we get the money?” he asked the priests. They shook their heads and spread out their hands. They didn’t know. Then Joash had an idea. He would save money to do the job. But he wouldn’t be the only one. He would ask the people to help, too. So King Joash called his workers. Make a big box with a hole in the top,” he said. The workers got busy and soon brought the box to the king. “Take the box and sit it near the door into the temple,” he told the workman. Everyday when the people came to the temple to worship, they dropped their offerings into the hole in the box. Some people had a lot of money to give. Some had only a little, but they all gave cheerfully. Soon the big box was full. What song do you think the children sang? Song  Here is My Money for Jesus  (LVPH 32) The priests took the money and put it into bags. Then the bags were carried to the king’s treasury or money bank where it would be safe. Then the big box went back to its place near the temple door to be filled again. Many times the box was filled by the offerings the people brought. When all the offerings were put together, Joash could begin to mend the temple. “Go and hire the best carpenters and builders in all the land,” Joash told the priests. “Go and buy the best timber and good quality cement.” There were painters, too who did their work when the builders had finished. King Joash checked that everything was done just right. Soon the temple looked like it was brand new and very beautiful. Then the priests looked in the money bags and big box. There was still some money left! So King Joash ordered new gold and silver dishes and new furniture for the temple. Now everyone was happy. King Joash was happy, the temple priests were happy, the workmen were happy and all the people were happy. They had all worked together to honour God and make God’s house Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…15

a special, beautiful place where they could all worship. Do you think God was happy too? Song  Joash  Tune: Go Little Pennies Debriefing  Did Joash want to please God? How do you think he felt when he first went into the messy temple? Why did the temple look terrible? Who gave the offerings? Who organised the workmen? Was it a good idea to ask everyone to help? Who was happy when the job was done? How can we honour God when we come into his house? What can children do to keep our church clean? Who thinks it is fun to work together doing a job? Song  Let’s sing our memory verse again Bible Study  Have a child open your Bible to 2 Kings 12:1-15. Read some verses to tell the story simply. How did Joash plan to collect money? Why did the people put money in the chest? Where do we put our offerings? How did the people feel about giving their money? Did Joash collect enough? What did the money pay for? Why did the people work together?  (They wanted God’s temple to look good. They wanted to show honour and respect for God and His house)  How did the people feel when they worked together? Remember,  In God’s family, we work together.  Say it together.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Working Together  Scatter some papers or leaves around the room and move the furniture so it looks untidy. Debriefing  Oh, dear! Look at our room. Does it look good? What can we do about it? If we all help we can quickly make it look good again. Shall we try?  (Provide a container to put the rubbish in)  When order is restored and everyone is sitting quietly, ask, Why should we work together to take care of God’s house? What other things can we do to take care of our church? What about at home? How can you help care for your home? How can you help around the village or your street? Remember:  In God’s family, we work together.  Can you say that? Song  With Jesus in the Family  LVPH 273

5. SHARING THE LESSON Song  with actions  “When We All Work Together” Suggest that the children go home and do the song with someone this 16…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

Experiencing the Story Props  two crowns. Characters  Esther, her mother, her father, Mordecai and the king. Practice till you can tell the story well. As you tell it give directions as suggested. Esther was a little Jewish girl who lived in the far-away land called Persia   (everyone point to Esther)  with her Mama and her Papa  (point to them).  The name Esther means “star” and it was a very good name for her because she was bright as well as beautiful. Then her Mama and Papa both died  (mother and father sit down)  and Esther went to live with her uncle Mordecai  (Esther moves to Mordecai while all point to him).  Mordecai loved Esther  (give a hug)  and cared for her as if she was his own little girl. Every day Mordecai taught Esther all the things that Mamas and Papas teach their children. He taught her to be kind and helpful  (Esther pretends to sweep).  He taught her to always tell the truth and to be brave. And most important of all, he taught her to love and worship God.  (Esther kneels as if praying.) When Esther was a young woman, the king of Persia decided to look for a new Queen.  (Point to the king.)  Lots of young women went to the palace so the king could choose who he wanted for his queen. Mordecai took Esther to the king’s palace.  (Mordecai takes Esther’s hand and leads her to stand behind the king.) Even though she now 20…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

lived in the palace and had special helpers, and special food to eat, Uncle Mordecai still cared about Esther. Every day he walked in the gardens near where the young women lived so he could find out what was happening to her.  (Mordecai walks around Esther and the king). Finally it was time for Esther to meet the king. She was dressed in the best clothes, and her hair was done in a special way. Everyone was wondering, “Would he like her? Would he make Esther his Queen?” Servants led her to see the king who was sitting on his throne.  (Esther stands in front of king and bows.) And the king did like her. He said she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He could see that Mordecai had trained her well. She had good manners, and she looked kind as well as beautiful. The king took Esther’s hand and said, “Esther, I want marry you and have you for my Queen.” Then the king put a royal crown on Esther’s head (do it) and made her the queen. Then he gave a great feast in her honour. He also gave her lots of presents and gave everyone in the land a holiday.  (King claps his hands. Everyone claps for Esther) Mordecai missed his special girl when she went to live in the palace, but he never stopped caring for her. Next week we will have another story about Queen Esther and how Uncle Mordecai still cared for her. In God’s family we never stop caring for our family and friends. Song  God was Watching Debriefing  What does the name Esther mean? What happened to Esther when she was still a little girl? What kind of a man was Mordecai? How did Esther feel when she went to live in his house? How did he treat her? How did Esther grow to be kind and helpful? What happened to Esther when she was grown up? Who kept on caring about her? What is our message for today? Let’s say it together:  God’s people care for each other. Bible Study  Have a marker in your Bible at Esther 2:1-20. Let a child find the chapter for you to read certain verses that tell the story simply. Ask these questions:  When Esther’s Mama and Papa died, who looked after her? How do you know he looked after her carefully? Tell me some of the important things Mordecai taught her. Why did Esther go to live in the king’s palace? What happened to her while she was there? Why do you think the king chose Esther to be his queen?

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Allow time for the children to respond as you tell these little stories. 1. Janie’s mother is late to pick her up from Sabbath School. Janie is crying. What can you do?  (Stay with her till her mother comes, hug her, play with her, pray with her.) 2. Matthew is 5 years old. His mother is sick and goes to hospital. Matthew has come to stay at your house while his father is at work. What can you do to make Matthew happy?  (Share your toys, play with him, pray for his mother.) 3. Jonathan’s Grandma lives with his family. She starts coughing and coughing one day when she is reading a book to him. What can Jonathan do to help her?  (Get her a glass of water, pat her on the back, ask if she is alright.) Debriefing  How many of you have a brother or sister? How do you want your brother or sister to treat you? Is that the way you treat your brother or sister? How can we help care for our parents? How can we help the old grandma who lives down the street? How can we help people who live far away and do not know Jesus loves them?  (Pray for them; bring an offering to church.)  Should we ever stop caring for people? Why? Let’s say our message,  God’s people care for each other. Song  Memory Verse Song

5. SHARING THE LESSON Caring and Shining  Use the page of stars on page 90. Have one for each child. Use needle and cotton to make a loop on each to hang on a child’s button or wrist. Remind the children that the name Esther means a star. What do stars do? They shine. That is just what God wants us to do, too. When we are kind and caring to others we are letting our light shine. Take this star home and tell someone the story about Esther who was a little star and Uncle Mordecai who never stopped caring for her.

REFERENCES Esther 8:1-17. MEMORY VERSE Where two or three come together in my name, there I am with them.” Matthew 18:20. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know that God hears the prayers of his people. Feel good when praying with others. Respond by praying together for others. MESSAGE God hears us when we pray together. This is a Lesson About Community Esther’s story shows us that God hears when we pray on behalf of others. People in a Christian community pray together and support each other.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Prayer Circle  Needed: a short length of string for each child, a quantity of something that could be treaed onto the string –shells, seeds, frangipani flowers, puffed wheat cereal, peanuts in shells, buttons or beads. Have the children thread items on the string to represent each person they usually pray with – Mama, Papa, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa, church family, Sabbath School class, etc. Help them tie the ends together. Debriefing  Do you like to pray with other people? Where do you Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…23

usually pray with other people? I see that the things you threaded onto your string are tied closely together into a circle. That reminds me of praying together. There is something special about praying together. It makes us want to help each other. We can do great things when we pray together. God listens whether we pray by ourselves or with others. Our Bible story today is about when the Jewish people prayed together to give someone courage. Today’s message is  God hears us when we pray together.  Let’s say it together. b. Three-legged Walk  Have the children form pairs, stand side by side and tie their closest two legs together with a length of cloth. Have each pair walk to the other side of the room and back without falling. Debriefing  How did you manage to walk together? Can you think how walking together is like praying together? Well, some people find it hard to pray out loud with someone. But praying together binds us together with others. You have to be close together to walk with three legs and you have to be close to others when you pray with them. Where do you usually pray with others? God listens to us when we pray by ourselves or when we pray together, but God can do great things when we pray together. Our Bible story today is about a time when the Jewish people prayed together and God did something wonderful for them. Today’s message is:  God hears us when we pray together.  Let’s say it together.

Offering  Here is My Money for Jesus  Child of the King 13 and have a thank you prayer. Birthdays  Do you have a list of the children’s birthdays so you know when to make time for this part of the program? Use a special birthday offering box. Sing a birthday song  (Happy Birthday LVPH 39),  pray for the child, and give them a card.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Underline Matthew 18:20, and have a child find the verse for you to read aloud. Teach it with these actions. Where two - show two fingers or three - show three fingers come together in my name - arms outstretched as if gathering together there I am - point upwards with them - point to self and others Matthew 18:20 - palms together, then open. Experiencing the Story When you say: have the children: Esther say, “a star” King bow their heads Mordecai clap twice. Learn the story well so you can be confident as you tell it. Do you remember the story we had last week about the little Jewish orphan girl? Her name was Esther. When she grew up she was made the queen of Persia. The King  (bow)  did not know Esther was a Jew who loved God. He thought she was a Persian girl. Uncle Mordecai’s  (clap twice)  job was to sit near the palace gate and help people who came to the palace. This meant he was close to Esther and could send her messages and help her. Esther was always glad to hear from Mordecai and was pleased to do what he told her to do. One day, after Esther had been queen for about 5 years, she got an important message from Mordecai. Bad man Haman, who was one of the King’s helpers, had tricked the king and got him to make a Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…25

terrible new law. Bad man Haman did not like the Jewish people. The new law said that on a certain date the people of Persia could hurt the Jewish people and steal their land and their houses and everything they owned! Oh, dear, that was really mean, wasn’t it? So Mordecai sent a message to Queen Esther. He said, “You must tell the King that you are a Jew and ask him to save the lives of all your people.” Queen Esther sent a message back to Mordecai. It said, “I am afraid to do that. The King has not asked to see me for more than a month. I am not allowed to go to see him.” You see there was a law that no one, not even the Queen, could go to see the King unless he had invited them. Anyone who did would be killed unless the King held out his special golden stick called a sceptre, for them to touch. So Queen Esther could not get a chance to speak to him. Mordecai sent back another message. “Do not think you will be safe because you live in the palace. I think God has made you Queen so you can help our people.” Esther thought about what Uncle Mordecai had said. She loved him and she did not want him to get hurt. So she thought of a plan and sent back a message to him. She said, “Gather together all the Jews in the city. Tell them to pray for three days without eating anything. My servants and I will do the same here in the palace. On day number three I will go to see the King, even if it is against the law. When people don’t eat because they want to spend all the time praying, we call it fasting. And that is just what the Jewish people did. They fasted and prayed together. On day three, Esther prayed a last prayer, then she dressed herself in her best royal clothes and walked over to the King’s part of the palace. Would the King be happy to see her? Would he hold out his royal sceptre to her? The King looked up with a frown on his face. He had not invited anyone to come to see him. Then he saw that his visitor was his Queen Esther. He smiled. He held out his sceptre. He said, “I am very happy to see you. What would you like me to do for you?” Esther reached out and touched the golden sceptre. She smiled. She was not frightened any more because God had answered all their prayers. She invited the King to have dinner with her, and he was happy to come. Then she asked him to come to dinner again the second day. That was when she told the King that she was Jewish and asked him to change the terrible law that would cause her and all the other Jews to be hurt. 26…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

The King was very angry that he had been tricked into making that terrible law, but unfortunately, he could not change it. So he wrote another law that said the Jews could protect themselves if anyone tried to hurt them. And when the day came, no one tried to hurt them. The Jewish people had been saved by Esther’s bravery and prayers. God had answered “Yes” to the prayers of all the people praying together. God still hears our prayers whether we pray alone or with others. He is a wonderful God who cares for us all the time. Song  God Was Watching God was watching over Esther In the palace every day And He’s watching over me When I work and when I play.

God was watching over Esther She was brave when people prayed And He’s watching over me When I work and when I pray.

Debriefing  How did Esther feel when she went to see the King? Could you do what the Queen did? Can you be brave even when you are frightened? What can help you be brave? Prayer helps us be brave. Praying together makes us feel closer together as we share our problems and God’s special blessings. The message for today is really true.  God hears us when we pray together.  Let us all repeat it. Bible Study  Have a child find the book of Esther in your Bible. Read these verses that tell the story simply: Esther 4:15- 5:4; 7:3; 8:4-5 and 9:1-2. Ask  Why did Haman want to hurt the Jews? What two things did Esther do to help her people, the Jews? Why did Esther and the other Jewish people fast  (not eat)  while they prayed?  (So they could think about God and how to pray better. Because they wanted to show God this was something very important to them).  We honour or respect God when we think only about Him when we are praying. What did Esther first ask the King? How did the king help Esther and her people? God is able to help us just as He helped Esther and all her Jewish people. Let us repeat our memory verse. Song  He’s Able  LVPH 93 Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…27

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Praying Together  Discuss:  What do we do when we pray? Can you show me? Why do we fold our hands?  (So we aren’t playing with things.)  Why do we bow our heads and sometimes kneel down?  (To be respectful and show reverence to God.)  Why do we close our eyes?  (So we can think only about God.)  Where do we usually pray with other people?  (Church, Sabbath school, family worship). Why do we pray together?  (It’s good to share a problem, we are stronger together)  Does God like it when we pray together? Who did Esther pray with?  (her maids).  How did all the people praying together make Esther feel?  (Brave). Debriefing  Do any of you have something that is worrying you, or making you sad, or making you feel really happy?  (Encourage children to tell their prayer requests.)  Remember, Jesus hears us when we pray together.  (Have the children kneel while you pray for their requests.) Song  Whisper a Prayer  LVPH 233 Let’s say our message for today:  God hears us when we pray together.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Discuss with the children if there is someone who is sick or someone in their family who does not love Jesus that they would like to pray for. Or even just to pray for a member of their family they love. If possible, copy enough of the praying hands on page 91 for each child to have one. Write on the back the name of the person they want to pray for. If you are unable to do this, write the name on the child’s hand. Suggest they go to that person and pray with them. Divide the children into small groups, each with a leader, and encourage even the shy ones to say a little prayer for the person they have named eg “Dear Jesus. Please bless my Mama. She works hard to help me. Amen.” Let’s say our message for today:  God hears us when we pray together.

The Little Maid SERVICE

God teaches us how to serve

REFERENCES 2 Kings 5:1-2; Story in “My Bible Friends.” MEMORY VERSE “Let us do good to all people.” Galatians 6:10. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know that God will lead them where they can best serve Him. Feel that they can help wherever they are. Respond by being helpful to all people. MESSAGE We can serve God wherever we are. This is a Lesson About Service We can serve God anywhere He asks us to go. We are all missionaries, whether at home or far away. People will notice how faithful we are in the little jobs we are asked to do. When we do our work well, we show that we are being like Jesus wants us to be. Queen Esther and the little maid both show the importance of early home training.

Room Decorations Set up a home scene with a little table, chair, broom, bowls, dusting cloth.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. How can I Help?  Draw some simple pictures on a blackboard or paper of a house, church, garden, hospital, street. (Make them large enough for all the class to see.) Discuss what ways the children could help in each place. Debrief  There are lots of ways children can help in different places. that? (We could travel there. Our offerings can go there. We can pray for them) Our Bible story today is about a little girl who learned to be a good helper at home and also in a faraway place. She was happy to serve God wherever she was. Our message today is:  We can serve God wherever we are.  Let’s say that together.

OR b. Missionaries Everywhere  On the flannel board, display pictures of children from other lands. Ask for volunteers to tell what place each might come from. Discuss  What different kinds of missionaries are there?  Doctors, nursers, pilots, accountants. Debriefing  Do you know what a missionary is?  (Someone who tells or shows someone else about Jesus).  Do all these children live in places where missionaries go? Do you have to go to a far away place to be a missionary? Can you be a missionary? Yes, you can be a missionary right now, wherever you are. Our story today tells about a little girl who learned to be a good helper at home and also in a far away place. Our message today is:  We can serve God wherever we are.  Let’s say it together.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour the words of Galatians 6:10 and prepare it for a child to find the words for you to read aloud. Teach it using these actions: Let us - point to self, then others do good - touch fingers of right hand to chin to all people - palm up, move hand outwards Galatians 6:10 - palms together, then open. Song  Memory Verse Song - Tune: Round the Mulberry Bush Let us do good to all people Let us do good, let us do good. Let us do good to all people Galatians 6, verse 10. Experiencing the Story  Practise this story so you can tell it well. We have been telling the story of a little Jewish girl who became the Queen of Persia. What was her name? Now we are going to tell the story of another little Jewish girl who was taken from her home by enemy soldiers. They carried her far away from her Mama and Papa to a land called Syria. The leader of the soldiers, who was Captain Naaman, took her to his home to be a servant girl for Mrs Naaman. Do you think she was sad? Of course she was. But there was something that she was happy about. She trusted God and she knew He was there with her and that He would help her be a little missionary helper right there in Captain Naaman’s home. The Bible does not tell us what her name was, so we will just call her “Little Maid”. Little maid looked around the kitchen. It was different from the kitchen at home. This one was bigger and there were more bowls and baskets. She looked in the corner where the cooking was done. She loved to cook and she could do it well. She had often helped her mother make delicious bread and soups. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…31

Where was Little Maid? Could she serve God in the kitchen? Then Little Maid walked into the dining room. They did not have a separate dining room back home, so this room was very different. There was a huge table. In a cupboard were lots of pretty plates to set the table with. In a corner was a broom for sweeping. She was good at sweeping. Her mother had said she was very good at sweeping right into the corners. She was also good at setting the table. Her mother had taught her just where to put the bowls and plates and cups. Where was Little Maid now? Could she serve God in the dining room? Just then a woman in a pretty dress came into the room and smiled at Little Maid. She said, “Oh, you must be the little girl my husband told me about. I am Mrs Naaman. You are going to be my helper. Come with me while I show you what I want you to do.” Little Maid followed Mrs Naaman down a long hallway to her bedroom. Little Maid saw that the bed was not made. “Make the bed, sweep the floor and dust the furniture,” said Mrs Naaman. So Little Maid got busy doing the work she was asked to do. Where was Little Maid now? Could she serve God in Mrs Naaman’s bedroom? Soon Little Maid was able to do all the jobs Mrs Naaman had for her each day. She had to work hard ALL day. But did she complain or whinge? Oh, no. Her Mama had taught her to be a happy helper and do her work properly. Sometimes Little Maid really wanted to go outside and play, but she never stopped working till all the jobs were finished. Mrs Naaman and Captain Naaman saw what a good little helper Little Maid was. They saw that she swept in the corners. They saw that she did not give up if something was hard to do. She did not grumble or complain. In fact, she smiled as she worked! She was really smart, too. She could make delicious food that Mrs Naaman and Captain Naaman really like to eat. Where did Little Maid cook the food? Did she serve God in the kitchen? She was friendly and helpful. She came quickly when she was called. She obeyed all the time. But there was one thing she did not do. I wonder if you can guess what it was. This little Jewish girl from Israel was different from the other servants. How was she different? She did not worship the idols in Captain Naaman’s house. She knew 32…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

God. She prayed to Him, and He helped her every day. She served God wherever she was. She had learned to serve God at home in Israel with her family. Where did she serve God? And she also served God at Captain Naaman’s house. Where did she serve God? Little Maid could have stayed sad and miserable and angry at Captain Naaman for taking her away from her home. What made the difference? She trusted God. She knew she was in His care wherever she was. By doing her best work each day, she was serving God no matter where she was. And when we are doing what God wants us to do, we are happy. Song  God was Watching  Music supplied Bible Study  Place a marker in 2 Kings 5:1-2 so a child can find it for you to read aloud. What was Naaman’s job? Was he a brave soldier? Where was Little Maid’s home? Where did he take Little Maid to live? What was Little Maid’s job? Did she serve God well? How did she do that?  (By being a good worker, being cheerful, kind, caring, obeying, etc.)

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Where am I?  Ask the children to guess the place you are describing. 1. This is the place where you live. It has beds, chairs, a kitchen and a bathroom. 2. This is where children go to learn things. Teachers are there. 3. This is where children climb things, swing or play in a sandbox. 4. This is where you go to visit someone you like to play with. 5. This is where you come to spend time with Jesus. You sing, learn about God and see your friends. 6. This is where sick people are taken. There are nurses there. Debriefing  Earlier today we talked about missionaries. What is a missionary? Do you need to go far away from home to be a missionary? Can you be a missionary while you are still small? There are lots of places where you can be a missionary. You can show and tell people about Jesus in your village or street, at the playground, at school, at the store, anywhere you are. Remember, you can even be a missionary without talking –when you help others, are kind and gentle, obey parents quickly, comfort those who are sick or hurt, share, or be unselfish. Remember  We can serve God wherever we are.  Let’s sing about it. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…33

Let’s say our message:  We can serve God wherever we are.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Divide the children into small groups with adult leaders. Discuss where they think they could be a missionary this week without talking. (Helping someone, being kind and gentle to a baby or a pet, obeying quickly, taking flowers to a sick person, sharing with someone, being unselfish, etc.) Pray for each child that God will help them be a real missionary this coming week. SERVICE

God teaches us how to serve

REFERENCES 2 Kings 5:1-8; Story in “My Bible Friends”. MEMORY VERSE “May God strengthen you in every good deed and word.” 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know they serve God with actions and words. Feel excited about telling others about God. Respond by showing and telling others about God. MESSAGE We serve God by what we do and say. This is a Lesson About Service When our actions and words tell about God, we are serving God and helping others. People notice what we say and do, especially if they know we are Christians.

Room Decorations Same as last week.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. How We Serve God  Have a container full of things the children can use to show they serve God. Glass of water, bunch of flowers, bag of food, band-aid, Bible, toy, money in purse, tea towel, broom, etc. (some things will have more than one use). Ask the children to take turns in choosing an item and saying how it could be used to serve God by helping someone. Debriefing  Did you enjoy that game? Did you find some new ways Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…35

to serve God by helping others? Tell me about them. Are you serving God when you are kind to someone? How can you serve God in Sabbath School? Every day we can serve God by what we do and what we say. Today we will learn some more about how Little Maid showed Captain Naaman and his wife about God. Our message for today is,  We serve God by what we do and say.  Say it together.

OR b. Kind Lips  Teach the children a song that demonstrates the message for today. Song  Kind Lips  LVPH 310 Tune: I Have Hands That Clap Debriefing  Did you enjoy learning that song? It tells about two ways we can serve God. What are they? Singing about Jesus is a happy sound. Singing is a way to serve God. Can you think of two ways we serve God when we sing?  (Singing can make people happy. Singing about Jesus gives people a good message.)  Telling someone about God is a happy sound, too. God loves to hear you serve Him that way. Our message for today is:  We serve God by what we do and say.  Repeat it with me.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour the words of the memory verse in 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 in your Bible. Place a marker there so a child can find it and give it to you to read aloud. May God - point upwards strengthen you - arms up, fists closed in every good deed - palms up, hands out and word - point to mouth 2 Thessalonians 2:16,17 - palms together, then open. Sing  Memory Verse Song - Tune: Glory, Glory Hallelujah! May God strengthen you in every good deed and word May God strengthen you in every good deed and word May God strengthen you in every good deed and word While you live for Him today. Experiencing the Story Props  If you have a FELT SET, use it as you tell this story. You will also need a letter with the words of 2 Kings 5:6 written on it. Fold it and put it in an envelope. It was morning and Little Maid was busy doing her work in Mrs Naaman’s bedroom. She carefully lifted the perfume bottles and dusted beneath them. This was one job she especially liked to do. The bottles were so beautiful. They usually sparkled in the light coming from the bedroom windows. But not today. Today the curtains were still pulled across the windows. And Mrs Naaman was sitting on her bed in the darkness. She was crying softly. And Little Maid knew why. She was crying because Captain Naaman had the very bad sickness called leprosy. Leprosy made white spots on his skin. And he could not feel things with his fingers and toes. No one knew how to make leprosy go away. He would have to go away and live by himself so no one else would get his leprosy sickness. Mrs Naaman was very, very sad. Little maid was kind. She did not like to see Mrs Naman sad. She Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…37

tiptoes over to the bed. She whispered, “I wish Captain Naaman would go and see Prophet Elisha in my country. God would help Elisha heal the leprosy.” Mrs Naaman wiped her eyes. “What are you talking about?” she asked. Little maid sat on a stool near the bed. She told Mrs Naaman all about the prophet Elisha who lived in Israel. She explained that the God of heaven Who had made all the world, used Elisha to heal people who were sick. Then she told Mrs Naaman lots of the Bible stories that her Mama and Papa had told her about the true and living God she worshipped. Mrs Naaman jumped up from the bed. “Bring me some water to wash my face,” she said. “I must go and talk with my husband.” Captain Naaman was a friend of the King of Syria. Remember, Naaman was commander of the King’s army. So Captain Naaman told the king what Little Maid had told Mrs Naaman. The king said, “Go and visit the prophet. I will send a letter to the king of Israel for you.” So he wrote a letter to Israel’s king.  (Show letter and read it.) “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so you may cure him of his leprosy.” Captain Naaman took some presents with him, too. There was a bag of gold and silver money and ten sets of beautiful clothes. These were to be thank-you presents for the king. But the king of Israel was too upset to enjoy the presents when he read the letter.  (Show it and read it.)  And when he saw Naaman standing in front of him with leprosy spots all over him, he was really upset. The King of Israel knew he wasn’t God. He knew he couldn’t heal Naaman. He didn’t understand why the king of Syria thought he could. In those days, it was the custom to tear your clothes if you were upset so that is what the King did. He tore his royal robes and grumbled. Soon the news reached Prophet Elisha about the king being so upset that he had torn his royal robes. He sent the king a message. “Why have you torn your robes? Send that Syrian man to me so he can learn that there is a Prophet in Israel.” Prophet Elisha knew that the king could not heal Naaman. He knew that he couldn’t heal Naaman, either. But he knew that God could heal him. And he wanted Naaman to have a chance to know that God loves to help people. Prophet Elisha and Little Maid both wanted Captain Naaman to know about the true God. Little Maid showed her love for God in many 38…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

ways. She showed it in being kind and helpful and happy in her work for Mrs Naaman and she talked about Him, too. She loved to share God with other people. She let her little light shine. Song  This Little Light of Mine  LVPH 313 Debriefing  How did Little Maid feel about Captain Naaman being sick? What did she suggest that Captain Naaman should do? Did Naaman believe Little Maid’s God could help him?  (Yes, he probably did, because he did what she suggested.)  Why did he believe what a little servant girl said? He had seen what a kind person she was. He knew she was a patient, obedient, cheerful worker. He knew she worshipped and prayed to her God. And he had heard the stories Little Maid had told about the miracles God had done for people. Do you think Little Maid did a good job of serving God by sharing Him with others? She had shared God by what she did as well as what she said. What does our message say?  We serve God by what we do and say.  We need to remember to do that. Say it again with me. Bible Study  Place a marker in your Bible at 2 Kings 5:1-8 so a child may find it for you to read to the class. Ask What disease did Naaman have? Show me how he looked when he knew he had leprosy.  (sad face)  What did Little Maid tell Mrs Naaman that Naaman should do? Show me how Naaman looked when he heard from Little Maid that he could be healed.  (Smiley face)  Why was the king of Israel upset when he got the letter from the king of Syria? What did Elisha say when he heard about the king getting upset? What would you say if someone asked you to heal their sickness? Could you tell someone about God?

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Serving God  Ask the children to demonstrate serving God in these stories. They may do it in pairs. One to be the victim and the other the helper. 1. Your friend falls down and scrapes her knee. How can you serve God?  (Help her get up; comfort her; get her a bandaid.) 2. Your friend tells you he is really sad because his pet bird died. How can you serve God?  (Give him a hug; say “I feel sad for you”; let him share your toys.) 3. Grandma is trying to bend down to pick up something she dropped. She can’t quite reach it. How can you serve God?  (Pick it up for her with a smile) Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…39

4. Mother asks you to set the table for dinner. You are just going out to play with your new ball. How can you serve God?  (Obey quickly and cheerfully.) 5. Your neighbour has come home from hospital, but he has to stay in bed. How can you serve God?  (draw a “get-well card for him; take him some food or flowers; tell him you hope he feels better soon and that you are praying for him; pray he will get better soon.) Debriefing  Did these little stories help you think of a good way to serve God next week? Little Maid served God by what she said and what she did. We can do that, too. Ask God to help you find ways to serve Him. Remember the words of our Memory Verse. Let’s sing it again. Song  Memory Verse Song Let’s say today’s message:  We serve God by what we do and say.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Secret Messages  Have one of the “God loves you” (see page 92) messages for each child. Have enough short lengths of broom or bamboo to share out. You will also need some sticky tape. The children will use sticky tape to fasten one end of the paper to the stick and then roll it around the stick. This is the secret message they can take home to share with someone. Have them “read’ it till they remember what it says. Debriefing  Who are you going to share your secret message with? You will be serving God by doing something nice for them. You can also tell them about Little Maid and how she served God by what she did and what she said. Maybe you could also sing the memory verse song to them. And ask God to help you find lots of ways to serve Him like Little Maid did. Remember today’s message:  We serve God by what we do and say.

Disappearing Spots Lesson 7

SERVICE

God teaches us how to serve

REFERENCES 2 Kings 5:9-14; story in “My Bible Friends”. MEMORY VERSE “For we are created to do good works.” Ephesians 2:10. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know God made them to help each other. Feel willing to help whenever they can. Respond by doing good deeds for others. MESSAGE We serve God by doing good for others. This is a Lesson About Service God wants us to serve Him by doing good things for other people –even if they do not know or love Him. By acting out their love for God, Little Maid and Prophet Elisha helped a man from another land to learn what a great God we have. God wants us to use our muscles and our brains to bring His blessing to others.

Room Decorations Same as before. Have some blue tarp ready to represent the Jordan River that the children can stand on during the lesson.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Disappear!  Needed: a clear glass jug or bowl, a spoonful of salt and a nail or rock. Have a clear glass jug or bowl of water on a table. Show a spoon of salt then pour it in and give a stir. Hold up the empty spoon to show that the salt has disappeared. We cannot put it back in the spoon. Now show a Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…41

nail or a rock and drop it in. Does it disappear? Debriefing  Why do some things disappear in water and others do not? When we wash our hands, what things do we get off them?  (dirt, food, germs, etc)  If you cut your finger, can you wash the cut away? But in our Bible story today we will learn how God made something disappear like the salt in our experiment. Is water important to us? What kinds of things do we do with water?  (bathe, drink, wash, cook, water plants, etc)  Our Bible story is about Captain Naaman. Do you remember from last week that he followed Little Maid’s advice and went to see Elisha the prophet of God. Both Elisha and Little Maid did something good for Naaman. Today’s message is:  We serve God by doing good for others.  Let’s say it together.

OR b. What’s Leprosy?  Needed: white chalk, a sharpened pencil, a stick for each child and a cup. Make some spots on the faces and arms of the children with white chalk. Ask the children to close their eyes while you touch them with a pointed pen or pencil. Have them point to the place you touched. Explain that a person with leprosy cannot feel in the places where the spots are. If they touch something hot, or cut themselves on a sharp stone, they do not feel it. That’s why they get nasty sores on their hands and feet. Now have the children hold up both hands. Have them bend their fingers into their palms. People with leprosy have hands that are bent like this all the time. Place a stick in front of each child. Ask them to pick up the stick without using their fingers. Give them each a plastic cup. Have them try to lift it to their mouths for a drink without opening their hand. Explain that a person with leprosy would have trouble playing, working, eating, etc. Debriefing  Imagine that your skin has no feeling. What would you be glad not to feel? Pain isn’t always a bad thing. Pain helps to protect us. How would you manage if you had no fingers? If someone had to feed you like a baby? Do you remember the name of the man in our story last week who had leprosy? Who gave him some good advice? Who did he go to see? Both Little Maid and Prophet Elisha did a good thing for Captain Naaman. Today’s message is:  We serve God by doing good for others.  Let’s say it and remember it.

Experiencing the Story  (Practise to tell the story well.) Spread a blue tarp for the river where the children can step on it and “dip” in the river during the story. Captain Naaman was excited and afraid at the same time. We feel that way when we have to do something new, don’t we? Captain Naaman was riding in his chariot. His helpers were riding with him in their chariots. They were on the way to Elisha’s house. Naaman was excited because there was a chance he might get healed from his leprosy sickness. He was afraid because he thought that maybe he would not be healed. In one of the chariots were some bags of silver and gold money. And he also had 10 sets of very expensive clothes. He wanted to give them as presents – if he was healed. When they reached Elisha’s house, Naaman stepped out of his chariot. He looked very smart in his best soldiers’ uniform. His servant knocked at the door. Someone answered the door. Was it Elisha? No, it was the prophet’s servant. He left Captain standing there in the sun while he went to tell the prophet that Naaman had arrived. Naaman waited impatiently. When the servant came back, was Elisha with him? No! He just brought a message to tell Naaman to go down to the Jordan River and wash himself seven times and his leprosy would be healed. Was Naaman happy to hear that message? Oh, no! His face turned red. His heart beat faster. He was very angry. He thought Elisha was rude not to come to the door for an important man like he was. He was very upset that Elisha didn’t even speak to him. And he didn’t like the message the servant brought to him. He said. “I didn’t come all this way to wash in that muddy little river! We have nice clean rivers in Syria. I’m going home! He stomped back to his chariot. “Come on! Let’s go home!” he shouted. His men looked at each other. They were confused. “Why are we going home?” they asked. “Because I’m not going to wash in that muddy Jordan River. I’ll go home and wash in one of our nice, clean rivers,” said Captain Naaman. “Excuse me, sir,” said one of the men, “If the prophet had asked you to do something really, really hard, you would have tried to do it. Why not try something easy?” Captain Naaman stopped and thought about it. He knew that what his men said was true. And he HAD come a long way, and he really DID 44…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

want to be healed. “OK,“ he said. “I’ll do it. Let’s go to the Jordan River.” So off they hurried to the river before Captain Naaman changed his mind again. He took off his fine clothes and sandals. He looked at the muddy water with a frown, but he waded right in.  (Tell the children to stand up and get ready to “dip” in the blue tarp “river.”) Captain Naaman dipped under the water one time. Were the spots gone? No, they were still there. Two times: the spots were still there. Three times –spots still there. Four times –spots still there. Five times –spots still there, six times –spots still there. Seven times –spots gone! God had healed Naaman just as Elisha had said! Naaman raced out of the water. He checked himself all over. He shook his hands. He touched his fingers. He could feel things again! Yes, he really was healed. This was the happiest day of his life! He wanted to sing and shout and run and dance about. But most of all he wanted to race back and say thank-you to Prophet Elisha and give him all those special presents. And he could hardly wait to get back home and show Mrs Naaman that he had been healed. Little Maid and Prophet Elisha did something really nice for Captain Naaman. Little Maid told him about her God and Prophet Elisha told Naaman what he must do to be healed by God. God wants us to do good things for others. We can help others every day. Song  Naaman’s Song LVPH 65 Debriefing  How did Naaman feel when Elisha didn’t even come to talk to him? How did he feel when he dipped in the river 6 times and nothing had changed? What happened when he came up the seventh time? How did that make him feel? Who had helped Naaman?  (Little Maid, Elisha, God.)  There was someone else, too who helped him. Can you think who it was? I think the man who persuaded him to do what Elisha had said was a real helper, too. Let’s say our message again:  We serve God by doing good for others. Bible Study  Have a child open your Bible to 2 Kings 5:9-14. Read the story in simple words. Whose house did Captain Naaman go to? What did Elisha’s servant tell Naaman to do? Why didn’t Naaman want to do it? Who talked him into washing in the Jordan River? How many times was Naaman supposed to dip in the river? What happened when he dipped the seventh time? Song  Dip, Dip, Dip, in the River  LVPH 56

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Noughts and Crosses  Draw a noughts and crosses pattern on the board or outside. Divide the children into two teams. Say:  We’re going to play noughts and crosses. You can put an X or an O on the board for your team if you can tell one way you can do good to people. Here are some ideas.  (Set the table without being asked, take a drink to Papa when its hot, tell someone a Bible story). Give the teams alternate turns. Debriefing  Did you enjoy playing that game? We have heard a lot of good ideas about doing good deeds. I hope you remember some of them and try to do them during the week. God loves it when you serve him by doing good things for other people. Let’s sing our Memory Verse again Song  Memory verse Song

5. SHARING THE LESSON Smiley/Sad Faces  Use page 93. Cut out one pair for each child. You will also need enough pieces of broom stick or bamboo to make a handle for the faces. Fold the faces and fasten the stick between them so they can be turned to show a smiley or sad face. Say  Show me Naaman’s face when he knew he had leprosy: 1. When Little Maid told him about Elisha. 2. When the king said “I can’t help you. 3. When Elisha said, “Come and see me.” 4. When he was sent to the muddy Jordan River. 5. When he had dipped in 6 times. 6. When he dipped in the 7th time. Debriefing  Take your smiley/sad faces home and use them as you tell someone about the story of Naaman being healed. Remember that Little Maid had a smiley face as she helped Naaman and Mrs Naaman. Look for ways this week to do good things for other people and remember to use your smiley face.

Naaman Serves God SERVICE

God teaches us how to serve

REFERENCES 2 Kings 5:15-17; Naaman story in “My Bible Friends”. MEMORY VERSE “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel” 2 Kings 5:15. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know there is only one God to worship and serve. Feel willing to be a good example to others. Respond by putting God first in their life. MESSAGE We serve others, but we put God first. This is a Lesson About Service The way we live our lives and what we make number one is an example to others. People watch our actions and listen to our words. God works for those who appreciate and respond to the light given to them from heaven. We serve others by showing them that we put God first in our lives.

Room Decorations Same as last week.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Potato Relay  Needed: a small potato or large round seed and a spoon for each team. Divide the children into 3 equal teams. Give each team one small potato (or something of similar size) and one spoon. When you give the signal, have the first person in line carry the potato in the spoon to the other side of the room and back again. They will pass the spoon to the next person on their team. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…47

No one is to touch the potato with their other hand. If it falls off the spoon, they may put it back in the spoon. Remember which team came first, second, third. Debriefing  Did you have fun doing that relay race? How do you winners feel? How about the second place winners? And what about the third place winners? Why is getting first place so important? What’s so sad about coming last? Have you ever thought about the place God wants us to put Him in our lives? Do you think He should be the most important thing, number one, in our lives? We have another story about Captain Naaman today. When he was healed of his leprosy sickness, he learned something very important. It is something that we all need to learn. The message to day is:  We serve others, but we put God first.  Let’s learn that by repeating it together.

OR b. Voting  Needed: 3 pictures of nature, 3 labels, pieces of paper, pencils, basket or bowl. Pin three nature pictures to the board or wall (If you have the SS Picture Set Display Book, use pictures from it but remember to replace them afterwards!) Label them underneath A, B, & C. Let each child decide which is their favourite picture. Write the number of the picture on their piece of paper and put it in the basket. Count the votes. Debriefing  Why is getting first place important? What is sad about coming last? Where does God want us to put Him in our lives? Do you think we should make Him Number one? In our story about Captain Naaman today we will learn about the change he made in his life after he was healed from leprosy. It is something important that we all need to learn. Today’s message is:  We serve others but we put God first.  Let’s all say it together.

Song  The Naaman Song  LVPH 65. It will remind the children what happened in last week’s Bible story. Naaman stood dripping, beside the Jordan River. On his face was a big, big smile. He was smiling because there were no leprosy spots anywhere on his body. His men were cheering because they were so happy. They all jumped into their chariots and followed Naaman as he raced his horses as fast as they could go. Where do you think they were going? They were racing back to Prophet Elisha’s house. “Healed! Healed!” he shouted as he urged the horses to go faster. It was all so wonderful. The God of Little Maid and Prophet Elisha had healed him! Dust swirled up around the horses as they pulled up in front of Elisha’s Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…49

house. Captain Naaman couldn’t stop smiling. He was so happy to be well again. This time Elisha opened the door. “Are you the prophet of God?” asked Naaman. Elisha looked at Naaman’s smiling face. It made him smile, too. “Look at my skin,” said Naaman. It looked smooth and healthy , just like a baby’s skin. “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” said Captain Naaman and he bowed to Elisha over and over again. Then he said. “Now I know there is no God in all the world like the God of Israel. Please take these presents.” Naaman’s men began to unload all the silver and gold money and all the new clothes they had brought from Captain Naaman’s home. Elisha held up his hand, “No, no,” he said, shaking his head. “I will not take any gifts. It was not me who healed you. God did it.” Elisha did not want Naaman to think he had power that belongs only to God. And he did not want Naaman to think he should pay to have God heal him. And he did not want Naaman to think he served God to make money from people. Naaman said, “Please take these gifts. It is my way of saying thank you. I am so happy I am well again. But still Elisha shook his head. Elisha said, “Our God is a great God. He can make us well if we trust Him. I am very happy you are well again. If you had not been willing to do what He asked you to do, you could not have been healed.” Naaman was quiet for a while. He knew that he had very nearly missed the chance to be healed because he was too proud. Then he nodded to Elisha. “Thank you, Prophet Elisha, for telling me the way to be healed. You will not accept my gifts, but I want you to know that, because your God is the greatest God, I love him and I want to serve him.” Then Naaman turned to his men and ordered them to repack the presents. Soon he stepped back into his chariot and shook the reins as he called out, “Let’s go home.” Mrs Naaman had been watching the road from her window for days. She knew it was about time for her husband to get back from Israel. Then she saw some dust away in the distance. She hoped it was Naaman and his men. The cloud of dust came closer and closer till she could see it really was Captain Naaman. She hurried out to meet him. She blinked her eyes a few times as she looked at him. He should have been looking tired after the long, long ride, but he looked fit and really young again. She could tell from his big smile that the trip had been successful. She looked for the white leprosy spots, but they 50…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

were all gone! “Tell me everything!” she shouted. She could not stop smiling. Everyone was smiling. It was such a happy day. And when Naaman told her the whole story she said, “I knew that Little Maid’s prophet would heal you.” “Yes, but it wasn’t the prophet who healed me,” said Naaman. “It was God. There is no other God like Him. We pray to our idols, but they don’t help us. They can’t heal us. The God of Israel is the true God. He is the one I am going to worship now.” Mrs Naaman nodded her head. “Yes, this God is better than all other gods. I will worship Him with you.” So all the idols of wood or stone or metal were thrown out of Naaman’s house, and they prayed only to the God of heaven. The same God that Little Maid and you and I worship. Who do you think was the happiest person in Captain Naaman’s house? I think it was Little Maid. The whole country heard that Naaman’s leprosy sickness was gone. Everyone now knew that there was a God in Israel who could do mighty things; things that their idols could never do. Captain Naaman put God first in his life. His family saw this. His servants saw it. His soldiers saw it, and his neighbours. Everyone saw that Naaman put God first. What about us? Let us hold our hand high and say “God is first!” Do it again. “God is first!” Song  Oh, Friend do You Love Jesus?  LVPH 210 Debriefing  Why was Naaman happy? How did he feel when he saw Elisha? What did Naaman say about God? How did Naaman serve God? Who did he tell about God? Can we do that, too? Who became number one in Naaman’s life? Does God only love the people in Israel? What does our message for today say?  We serve others, but we put God first. Bible Study  Prepare your Bible for a child to find 2 Kings 5:15-17 and read them the story. Ask: What did Naaman take to Israel with him? Why didn’t Elisha accept the gifts?  (Because it wasn’t him who healed Naaman; he didn’t want Naaman to think he could buy healing; he didn’t want Naaman to think he (Elisha) worked for money.)  Did Naaman keep on worshipping idols when he got back home? What were the two big changes in Captain Naaman’  (healed of leprosy; he learned to put God first in his life).

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Jesus is First  Make a collection of pictures, felts or objects to represent Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…51

Jesus, family, friends, money, TV, food (lollies etc), sports, clothes, toys, etc. Also make 3 prize ribbons –usually blue (1st) red (2nd) and white (3rd) (see pattern in Helps). Arrange the pictures where they can be, seen. Say  Have you ever seen a ribbon that someone won for doing something really well?  The ribbons usually say First place or Second place. Now I want you to look at these pictures and decide together which should have first place in our lives. The first place should be the thing most important to us. The second place should be a little less important, and so on. Let the children decide where to put the three ribbons. Debriefing  Are you all happy with our decision? Who should have first place in our lives? What can we do to make Jesus first in our lives?  (Talk to Him every day; have family worship; listen to Bible stories; do want He asks us to do)  How do you think Jesus feels when we make Him first? What if we make Him last? You need to talk to God every day to help you make good choices. You can serve Him better when you make him first. Others will see that you are kind and cheerful when you put Jesus first. They will want to know more about the God you serve. Song  Into My Heart  LVPH 195 Let’s say today’s message:  We serve others, but we put God first.

5. SHARING THE LESSON “God is First” Ribbons  Cut out the ribbons on the page 94. Make sure there is one for each child. Colour them blue. Put a bit of folded sticky tape on the back of them before sticking one on each child. Debriefing  Do you like your ribbons? Do you know what they say? Let’s say it together. Take your ribbon home. Get different people to read what it says. It is an important message. Share it with someone as you tell them about Naaman putting God first in his life. And don’t forget to pray that you will be able to put God first in your life this week. Let’s say today’s message:  We serve others, but we put God first.

Baby Moses Lesson 9

WORSHIP

We thank God for being with us

REFERENCES Exodus 1–2:1-10; Moses story in “My Bible Friends.” MEMORY VERSE “You are my hiding place.” Psalm 32:7. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know God is with them like He was with baby Moses. Feel that God will take care of them. Respond by thanking God for His protection and care. MESSAGE We worship God when we thank Him. This is a Lesson About Worship God watches over boys and girls today just as he did in Bible times. When we thank Him for His protection and care, we are worshipping Him.

Room Decoration Have some plants or cut grass around the blue tarp to represent the Nile river. Have a basket large enough to hold a baby doll wrapped in a blanket.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Protection  Prepare a collection of things used for protecting us in various situations – helmet, sunglasses, tongs, face mask, insect repellent, raincoat, apron, gloves, etc. Cover them with a cloth. Say: On the table are items we use to protect ourselves. I’m going to uncover them and let you look at them for one minute. Try to remember the names of all the things you will see. Then I will cover them again and we will try to remember what we saw on the table. I’ll write them on the board. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…53

Debriefing  Was that a fun game? Let’s count how many items you remembered. Now I’ll uncover them and you can see what you forgot. Hold up each item and ask: How do we use this to protect us? We use these things to keep us safe, but God has something better that He uses to protect us. Who can tell me what it is? Yes, God’s angels protect us all the time, even though we do not see them. Our Bible story today is about God’s angels protecting a precious baby. Do you think that family said thank-you to God? Today’s message is:  We worship God when we thank Him.

OR b. Water Noughts & Crosses  Make a noughts and crosses grid on the board or floor. Divide the children into two teams. The objective is to get three O’s or three X’s in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Each team tries to block the other team. Our Bible story today has something to do with water. We are going to play a game. I want you to think of some stories in the Bible that have water in them. When you tell me a story, you can put a X or O for your team.  (Disciples fishing, Naaman, Baby Moses in basket, Moses hit the rock, Axe head that floated, Jonah, Paul in the shipwreck, crossing the Red Sea, house built on the sand, John baptising in Jordan, etc.) Debriefing  Was that game hard or easy? Did you remember enough water stories? Is water important to us? Water keeps us healthy. What do we do with water? Our Bible story is about a basket floating on water. Angels protected something precious in that basket. Angels protect us, too. We need to say thank-you for our angels. Our message is:  We worship God when we thank Him.  Let’s say it together.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to those who do not attend regularly as well as any visitors. Song  Get Ready for Prayer  LVPH 8 The leader will then begin the prayer, saying “We thank you God for all these things,” and the children will name the thing they are thankful for one after the other. At the end have everyone say,  “We thank you God. Amen.” Mission  Use “Children’s Mission”, or some other Mission story. It is good to have an offering chart or a map showing the place where our offering is to this quarter. Use a special offering container. Experiencing the Story Props  a basket and baby doll. Characters  Jochabed, Amram. Have the children help you act it. Stand beside each actor as you say the words for them, or help them to say them. God’s people, the Israelites, had lived in the land of Egypt for a long time. There were thousands and thousands of them, because they had large families. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, was afraid of them. He thought the Israelites might fight his own people, the Egyptians, so he made them slaves. They had to work very hard for no pay. They had to make bricks, build big buildings and work in the gardens growing food. But Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…55

Pharaoh was still not happy. So he told the Egyptians to throw all the Israelite baby boys into the river. Oh, dear, wasn’t that sad? Jochabed and Amram had a baby boy. (Have them hold baby)  They already had a big boy named Aaron and a sister called Miriam. They did not want their baby boy to die. The family knelt down and asked God to help them save their baby. They hid him at home for three months (cover baby with blanket) “Sh-h-h, baby, don’t cry,” they said. But when baby grew bigger, he cried louder, and they knew someone would find him, so they had to think of a new plan. Mama Jochabed took some reeds from the river and used them to weave a special basket for the baby.  (Pretend to weave basket and cover it with tar.)  She painted it with black, sticky tar so the water would not get in. Then she put a soft blanket inside, and laid the baby on top, wrapped in his blanket, and she covered the top like an umbrella. Then the family knelt and prayed that God would keep baby safe. Mama Jochabed carried the basket down to the big river. She hid it in the rushes that grew in the water near the edge. Jochabed had to go away, but big sister Miriam played close by watching carefully. God’s angels were there, too, taking care of the baby. The little basket boat floated gently on the water. The baby slept. Song  God was Watching  Use song picture aid Soon the princess, Pharaoh’s daughter, came down to the river to bathe. She saw the little basket, and asked her maids to fetch it to her. (Do it) She lifted the lid and got a big surprise when she saw a baby inside, fast asleep. The princess smiled. “Isn’t he lovely? I think I’ll keep him. He can be my baby. I’m going to call him Moses because he came out of the water.” Miriam ran up to the princess. She bowed down and asked, “Do you want me to go and find one of the Israelite women to take care of the baby for you?” “Yes, go,” said the princess. Miriam ran home as fast as she could to get her mother. When Jochabed came the princess smiled. She could see that Jochabed would take good care of the baby. The princess said, “Please take this baby home with you. Care for him until he is a big boy. Then he will come to live with me in the palace.” Baby Moses had been saved! Now that the princess had found him, no Egyptians would come to hurt him. And they could keep him at home with them. God had answered their prayers. He had kept their precious baby safe. 56…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

Debriefing  How did Moses’ family feel when Pharaoh said he would kill all the baby boys? What did they do? Who helped them think of a plan to save baby Moses? Who was caring for Moses when he floated on the water?  (Angels and Miriam.)  How did Miriam feel when she saw the princess coming to the river? When she found baby Moses? How did Jochabed feel when Miriam ran to say the princess wanted to see her? What do you think the family did as soon as the carried the baby back home? God watches over you, too. Even when you don’t know you are in danger, God loves you and your angel protects you. Remember our message?  We worship God when we thank Him.  Let’s do it now. Song  Jesus Sends the Angels  LVPH 48. Bible Study  Place a marker in Exodus 1-2 where out story for today is found. Read aloud some of the verses that tell the story simply. What kind of work did the Israelites have to do for Pharaoh? How long did Jochabed hide Moses? What did she do then? What was the boat made of? Why watched over the little boat? How did the princess save Moses? Who gave Moses his name? What does the name mean? (To draw out, like coming out of the water.) Let’s say our message:  We worship God when we thank Him.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Angel Protectors  Use feathers or ping-pong balls or something very light. Place them on a flat surface and have the children blow on them to make them move across the surface. Debriefing  What made the feather move? Can you see your breath? How do we know it’s there?  (We see what it does.)  It is like that with God and his angels. We can’t see them, but we know they are there because of what they do for us. They cared for Baby Moses and they care for us, too. Let us sing our memory verse together. Song  Memory Verse song

5. SHARING THE LESSON Baby in a Basket  Prepare a short stick for each child. Draw a face on each one. Provide a small piece of cloth for a blanket the children can wrap around each one. Have them use leaves to make a boat shape in which they may lay their “baby.” Make a sample for them to follow. Song  God was Watching Baby Moses Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…57

Debriefing  Who made a little basket boat for her baby? Was it easy to make your basket? Was it easy to keep baby Moses hidden? Are you safe at home? Who does God send to take care of you? Do you remember to say thank-you to God for taking care of you? Take your baby and basket home and share it with someone as you tell the story about God protecting baby Moses. Tell them that Moses’ family said thank you to God. Remember our message:  We worship God when we thank Him.

Lesson 10

Pillars of Cloud & Fire WORSHIP

We thank God for being with us

REFERENCES Exodus 13:21-22 and 14:21-22. MEMORY VERSE “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go” Genesis 28:15. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know God cares for us all the time. Feel confident about God’s care. Respond by thanking God for his car and protection. MESSAGE We thank God for taking good care of us. This is a Lesson About Worship Praising God for His love and care is a part of worshipping Him. We have so many things for which we can thank Him. When we thank Him, we are worshipping Him.

Room Decorations Remove the plants and grass from around the “river.” It is now the Red Sea. Set up a small tent, or make one with a sheet over two chairs. Make a pillar of cloud and fire. Make the cloud from paper and cotton wool. Make the fire with orange paper. Put the cloud on the end of a stick, then turn it and glue on the fire. Carry it as you tell the story.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Thank-you Paper Chain  Have a supply of paper strips (or palm leaf strips) marking pens, staples or sticky tape. Have the children tell you something for which they want to thank God. Write the word on a Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…59

strip. Tape or staple the strips together to make a chain. Hang the chain where all can see it. Debriefing  Who is it that does so many good things for us? Tell me what you thank God for. Our Bible story today tells how God cared for his people in a special way. God was always with them. God is always with us, too. Today’s message is:  We thank God for taking good care of us.  Let’s say it together.

OR b. Follow the Leader  Choose a leader and have the other children follow him around the room. When he stops, they all stop. When he goes, they follow. Debriefing  Was it easy to follow the leader? Did you know when he was going to stop? Do you ever feel afraid? What do you do when you are scared?  (Find Mama or Papa, hide, pray, cry, etc.)  Do you know that God is always with you and takes care of you? Our Bible story tells about when God led His people to safety when they were scared. God was always with them. Let us thank Him for His care. Today’s message is:  We thank God for taking good care of us.  Let’s do it.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to those who do not attend regularly as well as any visitors. Mission  Use “Children’s Mission”, or some other Mission story. It is good to have an offering chart or a map showing the place where our offering is to this quarter. Use a special offering container. Remind the children that giving an offering is one way we thank God. Offering  Sing,  Here is My Money  Child of the King CD 13 and have a thank you prayer. Birthdays  Use a special birthday offering box. Sing a birthday song  (Happy Birthday LVPH 39),  pray for the child, and give them a card.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour the words of the memory verse in Genesis 28:15. Place a marker so a child can find the verse for you to read. Teach it with these actions; I - point upward am with you - point to self and will watch over you - hand above eyes wherever you are - pretend to walk Genesis 28:15 - palms together, then open. Song  Memory Verse Song - Tune: She’ll be coming round the mountain I am with you and will watch you where you go I am with you and will watch you where you go I am with you and will watch you With you and will watch you I am with you and will watch you where you go. Experiencing the Story  Practice well so you can act the story as you tell it. Props  the pillar of cloud/fire as explained in Room decoration. Keep it for lessons 11 and 13 too. Many years had passed since the princess found baby Moses in the river. He stayed with his family till he was about 12 years old and learned to love and obey God. Then he went to live in the palace with the princess. He went to high school and then to university. He grew to be a very wise man. Then God chose him to lead the Israelite people out of Egypt to a better land. It was a very big job, and Moses was a bit scared, but God said, “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go.”  (That’s our memory verse, remember?) When the Israelites left Egypt they soon found themselves in the desert. What is a desert like? It’s hot and dry and full of sand. And Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…61

there are no shady trees to rest under. It was very hard to keep walking, walking, walking and everyone got very tired. There was no road, and even Moses was not sure which was the right way to go. But God had a special plan to keep them safe and make sure they didn’t get lost. During the day time, God sent a huge cloud rising up in the sky.  (Hold cloud above your head and have children follow you round the room)  It kept moving slowly in front of them to show the way. And it was over them like a big umbrella. Ah-h-h! It was good to feel the shade instead of the burning sun. But at night when it was dark and cold, a cloud wasn’t much good. Then the Israelites needed light and something to keep them warm. So what did God do for them? The huge cloud turned into a pillar of fire.  (Show it.)  The fire helped them to see,  (Look around.)  and it kept them nice and warm  (Hug yourself.)  And it scared away the wild animals that might try to hurt them. The cloud led them to the Red Sea. The people were frightened. They had no boats to get them across – and it was too far to jump or swim across. Moses said, “Please, God tell us what to do now.” And God said. “Moses, tell the people to Forward march! Right into the water. You hold out your walking stick over the water and see what I will do for you.” So Moses stood in the water with his walking stick held out. And when the people marched into the water, God sent a wind that piled up the water and made a path for them to walk through on dry land! It was a wonderful miracle only God could do. So all the people walked, walked, walked to the other side. Then Moses followed them, and when the last person was on the other side, the waves went whoosh! Down again, and the path was gone. Wasn’t that a wonderful way for God to show the people that He was right there helping them all the time? Now all the people were happy. Day and night they could see that God was leading them and keeping them safe. Moses’ big sister, Miriam led all the people in singing a really happy song to praise God. It was their way of saying thank-you. God protects us, too. He takes care of us wherever we are. Let us sing our thank-you. Song  Jesus Sends the Angels  LVPH 48 Debriefing  Where did the Israelites go when they left Egypt? How did they feel in the desert? What guided them during the day? What guided them at night? What else did God do for them? How would 62…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

you have felt walking past the big wall of water in the Red Sea? How did God make the path? How did they feel when they all reached the other side safely? How did they say “Thank-you” to God? Does God take care of people today? Does He take care of you and your family? What is our message for today?  We thank God for taking good care of us.  Say it. Bible Study  Place a marker at Exodus 13:21-22 and 14:21-22 and have a child find it for you to read the story. Name three wonderful things God did in our story today. What did these things show the people? Where did the pillar of cloud or fire always stay when the Israelites were being led? How did the cloud protect them? How did the pillar of fire help? What did Moses have to do before the Red Sea open up for the people? What did the people have to do?

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Where God Leads  Say:  God used cloud and fire to lead the Israelites through the desert.. We know He still cares for us today. What does He use? He uses our parents, and teachers at Sabbath School, and the pastor. Listen to these stories and tell me if God is leading the person in the story. 1. It is raining and you hear thunder. Mama calls you inside. Did God use your Mama to lead you to safety? 2. Your Mama is busy so she asks you to look after baby brother. He crawls near the door and the high steps. You bring him back inside. Did God lead you to keep your brother safe? 3. Your Sabbath School teacher teaches you about Jesus and you learn to love Him more. Did God use your teacher to help you know Him? 4. Your little sister is in bed. It is dark and she is scared, but you remind her that her angel is watching over her. Did God use you to help her? Finger Play  God’s Care God sends angels from above - point upwards To keep us safe, to show His love - cross hands over heart An angel left - tap left shoulder An angel right - tap right shoulder God keeps us safe through all the night - close eyes and snore And when we wake up to the day - rub eyes and stretch arms Then angels watch us as we play - wave Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…63

Debriefing  Where does God watch over you? When does God watch over you? Let’s always remember to thank God for taking care of us. We worship God when we say thank-you to Him. Let’s say our message again:  We thank God for taking good care of us.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Cloud and fire Pillars  Cut a cloud shape from carton box for each child. Have some cotton wool or kapok to glue on one side and let them colour the other side with reds and oranges. Debriefing  When do you like to see clouds in the sky? When do you like to see a bright torch? Does it make you feel safer? Take your cloud home and share it with someone. Tell them about God taking care of the Israelites night and day. Bitter Water to Better Water WORSHIP

We thank God for being with us

REFERENCES Exodus 15:22-25. MEMORY VERSE “He will lead them to springs of living water” Rev. 7:17. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know God wants them to have clean water to drink. Feel sure that God cares for their needs. Respond by thanking God for water. MESSAGE We thank God for giving us water. This is a Lesson About Worship Every day our hearts should overflow with thanks to God for supplying our basic needs for food and water. When we do so, we are truly worshipping Him. Praising God for caring for all our needs is a part of worshipping Him.

Room Decorations Use the blue tarp this week as the waters of Marah. Have a long stick to use as Moses’ rod.

1. READINESS ACTIVITY  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Mystery Box  Needed: a dead plant in a box, a healthy plant. Close the box with the dead plant in it. Pass it around to the children and have them guess what they think is in it –they can shake it gently but -no peeking! Then chose a child to open it and hold up the dead plant. Debriefing  How many of you guessed this dead plant was in the box? Why did this plant die? Yes, it died because it did not get enough water.  (Show the healthy plant.)  How is this plant different from the other one? Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…65

Is water important to us? Yes, it keeps us healthy. What do we do with water? Today we have a story about a time when God provided water for his people. Our message today is:  We thank God for giving us water.  Say it together.

OR b. How Much Water?  Needed: clear glasses and a jug of water. Ask: How many glasses of water do you need every day? Fill up one glass and ask: Just this much?  (no)  Fill another one and ask: This much?  No. Keep asking and filling until you reach six.)  Then say: This is about how much water someone your age should drink everyday, but what else do we use water for?  (Washing clothes, bathing, cleaning dishes, cooking, watering plants, etc.)  Ask: How much more water would that be?  Allow guesses. Debriefing  Allow response time as you ask:  Is water important to us? Yes. Water is very important. What would happen if we didn’t have any water? God gives us the water we need. Our Bible story today is about an unusual way God provided water for the Israelites as they travelled in the dry desert. Today’s message is:  We thank God for giving us water.  Say that with me.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Mark the words of Revelation 7:17 that are our verse this week. Have a child find them for you to read. Teach it with these actions. He - point upwards will lead - lock fingers. Right hand pulls left hand to the right them - point to others, then self to springs of living water - pretend to drink from cup Revelation 7:17 - palms together, the open. Song  Memory Verse Song - Tune: Maranatha - Brother John He will lead them, He will lead them To the springs, to the springs To springs of living water, springs of living water Revelation 7, verse 17. Experiencing the Story Props  blue tarp for water, pillar of cloud and fire, walking stick. Today we are all going to have a part in the story. This is another story about Moses and the Israelites. Remember Moses is leading them away from Egypt to a better land.  (Choose a child)  is Moses and the rest of you are the Israelites. I want you to do what I do during the story so watch me carefully. The Israelites were happy  (smile)  as the great pillar of cloud  (hold up cloud)  led them on through the desert.  (Moses walks slowly behind you carrying his walking stick.)  It is very hot and dry, even with the cloud umbrella overhead. The people had soon emptied the water pots they were carrying. Everyone in the whole camp of people was very, very thirsty and sad  (frown). The cloud led them to a place called Marah. (Moses leads them to water) Moses knew there was water at Marah, but he also knew it was salty and tasted bad so the people would not be able to drink it. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…67

Marah is a word in their language that means bitter or salty. As soon as the people saw the water they had big smiles on their faces. They shouted, “Water! Water! There’s water up ahead.”  (Everyone shouts the words.)  Some of the people raced ahead and knelt down and scooped up some water in their hands. Yuk! It tasted horrible. The smiles turned to frowns.  (Do it) The people began to grumble and groan and complain to Moses. They forgot all about what God had done for them. They forgot all about the way God had led them and kept them safe. They cried and made a big fuss just like spoilt children do sometimes. They forgot to trust God. Moses knew that God had not left His people. Moses knew that God understood the problem with their water. Moses knew that God is sad when people do not trust Him to take care of them. Moses knew it was time to pray and ask God to help them  (hands together).  Did God listen to the prayer Moses prayed? Oh, yes. And God told Moses to do something rather strange. He told Moses to get a stick and throw it into the water and the water would be sweet.  (Do it)  When Moses did it, some people tasted the water again. Now they had big smiles because it was true. The water was sweet! So, all the people rushed to the edge of the water. They had smiley faces now. They drank and drank all they could of the lovely sweet, cool water.  (Pretend to do it). If you threw a stick into some salt water, would it become sweet drinking water? Oh, no. God worked a miracle for His people. God knows what we need and He gives us all we need, including water in a desert. Did the people have long, grumbly faces now? No. Now they were smiling and they sang praises to say a very big “Thank you, God.” Let us thank Him right now for giving us water to drink. Debriefing  What did the Israelites need? Why didn’t they have any water? What did the people do when they were upset?  (Grumbled and complained)  What should they have done?  (Prayed for help.)  What did they do when they had water? Do you have water to drink at home? One way to worship God is to thank Him for our water. Remember our message for today?  We thank God for giving us water.  Say it with me. Bible Study  Have a marker at Exodus 15:22-25, where a child can find it for you to read. Ask:  How many days were the Israelites travelling in the desert before they found water? Where did they find water? What kind of water 68…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

was it? What did the people do? What did God tell Moses to do? Then what happened to the water? If I put some wood in salty water, will it make the water better? Who is the only one who can do that? Does God still care about people’s needs? How can we get help? Let’s sing our memory verse to remind us that God cares us. Song  Memory Verse Song

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Say: Do you really need water? What would happen if you didn’t have it? What other things do you really need? There are lots of things we would like to have, but we don’t really need many of them. Let’s name some things we really need. Count them on your fingers. We need air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, a place to sleep, someone to look after us. Now I am going to name some things and I want you to decide if it is something we really need. If we really need it hold your thumbs up and if we don’t really need it hold your thumbs down. A new toy? Shoes? Clean water? A long holiday? Someone to love and care for you? A big house? Healthy food to eat? Lots of new clothes? Friends? Lollies and sweet biscuits? A safe place to sleep? Jesus? Debriefing  Sometimes we are given things we like but we don’t really need. And that’s OK. But we can trust God to give us what we really need, like water to drink. Let’s thank Him with a song. Song  God is So Good  LVPH 88

5. SHARING THE LESSON A Cup of Water  If possible, give each child a plastic “throw-away” cup. On each write, “Thank God for water” If you cannot get cups, hold up a glass of water and suggest that the children go home and take a glass of water to someone and tell them about the time God helped his people get good water when they were very thirsty. We should always remember to thank God for giving us water to drink because we need lots of water every day to keep us clean and healthy.

We thank God for being with us

REFERENCES Exodus 16:1-5, 14-26. MEMORY VERSE “You will have plenty to eat and you will praise the name of the Lord.” Joel 2:26. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know God wants them to eat healthful food. Feel sure God will care for their needs. Respond by thanking God for their food. MESSAGE We thank God for giving us good food. This is a Lesson About Worship God blesses us each day with the things we need to keep us alive. Food is one of these. Praising Him for providing for our needs is a part of worshipping Him.

Room Decorations Same as last week.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Name a Food  Have the children sit on the floor in a circle. Have a small bag of rice or sand. Explain that you will throw the bag to someone as you call out the name of a food. As they catch the bag and throw it to someone else, they must call out the name of a different food. Continue till all have had a turn. 70…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

Debriefing  Was that a fun game? Do you think you have named all the foods in the world? God has given us many good things to eat. Why has He done that? Our Bible story today tells about the time God gave his people some special food to eat in the desert. They thanked god for their food. We thank Him for our food, too. Today’s message is:  We thank God for giving us good food.  Let’s say it together.

OR b. Table Grace  Needed: a small table set ready for a meal with a cloth, spoon and fork, plate, glass of water, food. Put a chair in place and invite volunteers to come, sit on the chair, and show what they do before they eat. See how many different forms of “grace” they have. You may like to teach them a simple rhyme like this: Bless this food which now we take To do us good. For Jesus’ sake, Amen. Debriefing  When you give something to someone, what do you expect them to say? How do you feel when someone says “Thankyou” to you? It makes Jesus and our guardian angels so happy when they hear us say, “Thank-you for the things You give us.” The Israelites were worried about food. God gave them a very special kind of food. They were happy and said Thank You, God. Our message today is:  We thank God for giving us good food.  Let’s say it together.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour the words of our memory verse in Joel 2:26 and place a marker for a child to find the verse for you to read. Teach it with these actions: You - point to others will have - hold out open hands plenty to eat - hand to mouth and you will praise the name - arms above head of the Lord - point upwards Joel 2:26 - palms together, then open. Experiencing the Story Props  a packet of Rice Bubbles or puffed wheat. Choose a child to be Moses. Remind the others they are all Israelites and need to watch what you do and copy it.  Where were the Israelites? Where had they come from? Where were they going? What happened to them in our story last week? Who was taking care of them? When the Israelites had been travelling in the desert for some weeks, the food they had brought from Egypt was almost gone. There were no stores where they could buy some more. There were no gardens where they could dig food. And there were no trees with food growing on them. So the people began to worry. They began to grumble and complain. They even said Moses was a bad man because he had brought them out into the desert to die from starvation. Oh, dear! Did they remember how God was caring for them? Oh, no! Did they remember how He led them through the Red Sea? Oh, no. Did they remember how God made the salty water into sweet drinking water? Oh, no! Did they trust God to find food for them? had long faces and grumbled and complained.  (Show it). Now, of course God knew they were worried. He saw their long faces and heard their grumbling and complaining. It made Him sad. It made Moses sad, too. Moses did what the people had forgotten to do. Moses prayed (Moses kneel down) And God said. “I’ve got a lovely surprise for everyone. I’m going to send them bread from heaven.” In the night, while the people were sleeping, something wonderful happened.  (Children lie down and close their eyes. Scatter the rice bubbles around the children.) In the morning white flakes lay on the ground all around the camp.  (Children open their eyes and sit up.)  “What is it?” The people asked. Moses said, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.” When the people ate it, it tasted like ordinance bread mixed with honey. It was sweet and yummy. The people called it manna which means “what is it?” Moses said, “Each morning you will find the manna on the ground. Get up early and gather enough for your family for that day. Don’t try to keep some for the next day because it will be rotten.” Some people didn’t listen to Moses. They tried to save some for the next day. But when they went to eat it for breakfast, it smelled really bad.  (Hold noses and say “Yuk!”) Some people were lazy and did not gather enough for the whole day. In the afternoon they went out to look for more, but there wasn’t any. It had melted away in the hot sun. So those people went to bed hungry that night.  (Rub tummies and look sad.) On Friday, Moses told the people, “Gather enough manna for two days because there will be none on Sabbath.” Some people did not listen. They remembered that if they tried to keep some manna for the next day, it was rotten. They thought it would go rotten on Friday night, too. Those people were very hungry on Sabbath because there was no manna for them to gather.  (Rub tummies, look sad.) After one week, everyone knew they had to follow God’s directions. What did they have to do every week day? Gather enough manna in the morning for the whole day. What did they have to do on Friday? Gather enough manna for two days. And when the Israelites followed God’s directions, they had fresh food every day. They could eat it straight, or bake it, or boil it like soup. God took care of their needs. He gave them plenty of food to eat in the desert. And God takes care of our needs, too. Here is a new song for us to sing. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…73

Debriefing  What did the people do when they were short of food? What should they have done? When Moses prayed, what did God do? When you are hungry, what do you do? Where does Mama or Papa get the food?  (Store or garden)  Who sends the sun and rain to make our food grow? Let’s thank God for our food.  (all bow heads for short thank-you prayer) Bible Study  Place a marker in Exodus 16: 1-5 and 14-26 and have a child open to the chapter. Read the story simply. Ask:  Why did the Israelites grumble? What should they have done? What did god send down from heaven? How much Manna did God say to gather every day? What about on Friday? Why was there no Manna on Sabbath? Is Sabbath the day to go to the market and to cook food? How did the Israelites feel about the manna? Do you think God provides food for us today? Yes, our food is really a special gift from God. What does our message to day tell us to do?  We thank God for giving us good food. Song  Hallelu, Hallelu  LVPH 213.

4. APPLYING THE LESSON Fruit and Vegetables  If possible, show a basket or bowl of fruit and vegetables. Tell them your favourite. Ask the children to name their favourite fruit or vegetable. Song  God Made Roses Grow in My Garden  (Use the name of a fruit or vegetable instead of Roses) LVPH 166. Debriefing  What do you do before you eat your meals? Are you glad God has given us lots of different food? What do you do when there is food on your plate you don’t like very much?  (Expect interesting answers!)  I hope you don’t complain about food like the Israelites did! How would you feel if you made something nice for someone and they didn’t like it. Would it be a good feeling? God helps your family grow or buy your food. They prepare healthy food for you because they love you. Our food is a gift from God. Let us thank Him for it. Let us repeat our memory verse about food. “You will have plenty to eat, and you will praise the name of the Lord.” Joel 2:26.

5. SHARING THE LESSON Manna from God  Needed: big leaves and Ricies or a pot of cooked rice. Use the remaining Ricies and place a few grains in a leaf you have placed in each child’s hand. 74…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

OR place a teaspoon of rice on the leaves. Have the children wrap them into a small parcel to carry home. They are to share it with someone and tell them the story of the manna that was food for the Israelites. Remind them also to remember our message:  We thank God for giving us good food.

God’s Ten Rules Lesson 13

WORSHIP

We thank God for being with us

REFERENCES Exodus 19:1-11, 16-20; 20:1-17; 32:15,16. MEMORY VERSE “We will do everything the Lord has said” Exodus 19:8. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know that God gave rules for us to live by. Feel that living by God’s rules is worshipping Him. Respond by thanking God for His rules. MESSAGE We thank God for showing us how to live happy lives. This is a Lesson About Worship We worship God when we live by His rules. He created us and knows what is best for us. God promises blessings for us when we obey his rules which keep us safe from Satan. We thank God for showing us how to live happy lives.

Room Decorations Continue to use the desert scene with river. Hang a dark blanket over a chair and a pole against the wall to represent Mt Sinai. Moses can stand on the chair. Cut a carton box to shape and write the commandments on them or write numbers 1-10.

1. READINESS ACTIVITIES  (Choose one activity, a or b) a. Stop and Go  Play “red light, green light”. Have the children stand at the back of the room or outside where there is more space. Tell them that when you turn your back and say “green light” they can walk toward you. They must stop immediately you turn and say “red light”, even if 76…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

they have one leg in the air, and keep really still. If you see anyone move, they have to go back to the starting line. Continue till a child reaches you. Debriefing  Did you enjoy this activity? Was it easy or hard to obey the rules? We have rules for games. Where else do we have rules?  (At home, on the street, in church, etc)  Why do we have rules when we are playing a game?  (Makes it fair, no one cheats, we know what to do)  Why do we have rules at home? Why do we have traffic rules? What rules do we have at church? What would happen if there were no rules? Today we have another story about Moses and the Israelites. God gave them 10 special rules so they could live happily. These rules help us to live the right way, too. Our Message today is:  We thank God for showing us how to live happy lives.  Let’s say it.

OR b. Family Rules  Ask the children to tell you a rule that they have in their family. Ask the group if they have that rule in their home, too. After each new rule, you repeat the ones they have already given you till you have a list. Now discuss why your family has these rules. Notice that they are rules that keep us safe and show love and make us happy. If we break the rules, it causes us to be unhappy and usually means we get into trouble. Debriefing  When we don’t follow the rules in a game, what happens? If we don’t follow the rules at home, what happens? Does breaking the rules make people happy? Today our story is another one about Moses and the Israelites. God gave them 10 special rules so they could live happily. These rules will also help us to live happily too.   Today’s message says:  We thank God for showing us how to live happy lives.  I’m sure you want to do that, don’t you. Let’s say it.

2. PRAYER AND PRAISE Welcome  Give a special welcome to those who do not attend regularly as well as any visitors. Song  Gidday, Gidday  Child of the King CD 3 Praise Time  Choose a Sabbath song and one or two others. God was Watching  Music supplied Jesus sends the Angels  LVPH 48 Thank God for Angels Bright  LVPH 50 All Night, All Day  LVPH 119 Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…77

Prayer Time  Before you pray, ask the children to tell you one thing they want to thank God for.

3. BIBLE LESSON Memory Verse  Colour Exodus 19:8 and mark the page so a child can find it for you. Teach it with these actions: We - point to self and others will do everything - open arms wide the Lord - point up has said - point to lips Exodus 19:8 - palms together, then open. Experiencing the Story Props  You will need your copy of the commandments on pieces of carton box, and the cloud on a stick from Lesson 10. Have the children do the various actions as you tell the story. The Israelites were still in the desert. It had been 3 months since they had left Egypt. Remember, they were travelling on their way to a better land God had promised them. God had been taking good care of them. He gave them shade in the day and a light at night. He gave them water to drink and special food to eat. Can you remember what they called the special food that they gathered every morning except Sabbath? Now they were camped by a mountain. God told Moses He has something very important He wanted to tell His people. Let us count together all the things God promised to do for His people, the Israelites, if they would continue to do what He asked 78…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

them. He said,  (Count on fingers).  I will care for you, I will lead you safely, I will make you happy, I will keep you healthy, I will bless you, I will make you a witness to people of other lands. How many special promises is that? The people promised that they would do whatever God wanted them to do. They said. “We will do everything the Lord has said.” That’s our memory verse. Let’s say it together. Then God told Moses he was going to come in a cloud and talk so the people could hear His voice. He told Moses to tell the people to get ready to meet with Him. He even told them just what they had to do to get ready.  (Have children mime these actions.) The people had to wash their clothes and have a bath. They were to look their cleanest and best to show they were being respectful when they met with God. Also, they were to fast. That means they were not allowed to eat. Do you remember someone else who fasted at a special time? It was Queen Esther and her people. So they only drank water, and they prayed. They wanted to have their sins forgiven before they met with God. Three days later God came in a cloud of thunder and lightning at the top of the mountain.  (Place the cloud on a stick at the top of the “blanket mountain”.)  The people heard very loud trumpets. They saw the mountain shake. The people stood in front of the mountain, ready to meet with God. They were really afraid because of the power and strength they saw coming from the cloud. God didn’t want them to be afraid. He loved them. Then His voice came out of the cloud. And He told them about the 10 special rules He wanted them to live by. We call them the ten Commandments. Then God told Moses to come up to the top of the mountain.  (Moses stands on chair.)  God wrote the ten commandments on two pieces of stone. Did God use a pencil or a pen or a chisel to do the writing? Oh, no. He just used His finger.  (Have Moses hold the carton box commandments.)  He gave them to Moses to bring back down to the people. This is what they say: 1. Love God the most. 2. Worship only God, not idols. 3. Speak God’s name with reverence and respect. 4. Keep the Sabbath holy. Spend it with God. 5. Respect Mama and Papa and obey them. 6. Don’t hate or hurt anyone. Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3…79

7. Love the person you marry. 8. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. 9. Always tell the truth. 10. Be happy with what you have. These rules sound very good to me. They tell us to love God most of all and to love other people in all we do. God gave us these rules because He loves us. He promises that if we obey these rules, we will be happy. God made us, so we can trust Him to know how to make us happy. When we obey God and do what he asks, we are worshipping Him. What a wonderful God we have. Song  God’s Ten Rules  Tune: I’m glad I came to Sabbath School Debriefing  What do you do at home when special visitors are coming? How do you think the Israelites felt as they got ready to meet with God?  (Happy, afraid, nervous, worried)  How do you get ready to come to church? Who do we come to meet? How do God’s rules show He loves us?  (Obeying them makes us happy, keeps Satan away, brings many blessings)  Do you want to obey God’s rules for your life? Why?   Do you remember today’s message?  We thank God for showing us how to live happy lives.  Because God loves us, we will be careful what we do so we show we love Him. Bible Study  Place a marker in Exodus 20. You will also need Exodus 19:1-11 and 16-20 and chapter 32:15-16 to tell today’s story. Ask:  Where were the Israelites? What did God ask them to do to get ready to meet with Him? Why did He ask them to get ready?  (Because He is holy and special)  How did He come to meet with them? How many rules for happy living did He give? What do we call these rules? How did God write them? What did the people promise they would do?  (Repeat memory verse.)  Do you like to be happy? Do you want to obey God’s ten rules? Why?

4. APPLYING THE LESSON The ten commandments are about loving God or loving others. Listen to these little stories and tell me the answers to my questions: 1. Adam loves to go to Sabbath school where he learns about Jesus. Who is he showing love to? 2. Jane closes her eyes and folds her hands when she is praying. Who does she love? 3. James speaks the name of Jesus carefully and with respect. Who does he show love for? 80…Pacific Kindergarten Leader-Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 3

4. Sarah’s family make every Sabbath a special day of thanks and worship. They show their love for _____? 5. Becky is swinging in the garden. Her Mama calls. Becky runs to help Mama. She is showing love for _____? 6. Luke’s brother teases him and makes him upset. Luke asks God to help him not to fight. Who is Luke showing love for? 7. Tara and Tommy and Mama and Papa are happy. They like to do things together. Who do they show love for? 8. Patty has no ball. She finds one along the road. She knows it belongs to Mary so she takes it to her. Who is she showing love for? 9. Papa looks for his hammer and can’t find it. Sammy admits that he took it to play with. Who is Sammy showing love for? 10. Jane doesn’t have a doll. She really wants one. Her friend Emma gets one for a present. Jane is happy for Emily. Who is she showing love for? Debriefing  Remember that all ten of the commandments are about loving God or loving others. They are promises from God. They keep us safe from Satan. There are only two choices. Follow Satan or follow God. God will help you when you are having trouble obeying. He wants to help you. Ask Him to be with you. He will give you extra strength to obey. When we obey God we show how much we love Him. Obeying God is worshipping Him. Let us sing a song about being obedient. Song  Obedient  LVPH 270: Tune: I Have Hands That Clap

5. SHARING THE LESSON God’s Rules  Find some heart-shaped leaves-one for each child. Write the number 10 on each one. Give them to the children to take home to remind them that God’s rules are love. They can share it with someone as they tell about the time God spoke His rules from the mountain. If you can find no leaves, then cut heart shapes from paper or carton box for the children to take home. Remind the children that God wants us to obey the same rules he gave the Israelites. God’s rules never change. He wrote them with His finger because they are very special. We worship God and we thank him when we obey Him.
