Adapting to Change in Cottonwood North

Changes to our neighbourhood roads and the addition of new homes being built, altered life in our quiet Cottonwood North neighbourhood. These changes brought new relationships to build and issues around speeding in the subdivision. Instead of allowing the negative to take hold, one man was instrumental in bringing us together and keeping an eye on things. Although, we were saddened by his loss last fall, his spirit and good will lives on. In his memory, we joined together Halloween night for our first ever Block Party. Many volunteers and some donations from local businesses on Dewdney Trunk Road made it a memorable event. A tradition is emerging with our second party planned for early summer. It will be a potluck with lots of children’s activities, and some music in a Mexican theme... just for fun!!! Cottonwood North Block Party Association

Building Community One Neighbourhood at a Time

Block Party Grants are available to help you Connect with Your Neighbours! There are many different types of neighbourhoods in our communities. In addition to having a wide range of homes– detached, semi-detached, townhouses, apartments, condominiums, and mobile homes, some neighbourhoods also have businesses, schools, parks, shops, churches, government services and community organizations. The $100 Block Party grants are offered in order to assist you with the planning of activities which will help people in your neighbourhood connect with one another. Building relationships in your neighbourhood improves your sense of wellbeing, your sense of security and strengthens the quality of life for you and your neighbours. For more information on the Neighbourhood Block Party Seed Grants and to receive a Block Party Information Kit contact the Program Coordinator, Elaine Yamamoto at 604 467-7433 or 604 306-0627 or by email at [email protected]

SLIP Into clothing to protect your arms and legs SEEK Shade or create your own with an umbrella SLOP On sunscreen before going outdoors. Remember to put it on at least 15 minutes before going outside and reapply t hroughout the day. SLAP On a hat with a brim or cap with flaps. SLIDE On a pair of sunglasses. Water & Boating Safety If you don’t already know how to swim, why not make this summer your year to learn! Even experienced swimmers need to remember these safety guidelines. • When going boating - remember your PFD! It’s your seatbelt for on the water - don’t leave shore without one on. • Fast flowing rivers and streams can sweep your feet out from under you quickly. • Don’t trust your inflatable toys to keep you up in the water - deflation can happen quickly. • Know the area you are recreating in and the hazards there like rocks, deep areas and strong currents. • Know your local rdequirements for backyard pools (both above and in ground) • Drowings can occur in as little as 2 inches of water - always be active in the supervision of children around water.

Bike Safety Bike safety is up to us all - cyclist and motor vehicle drivers. Here’s some tips to keep everyone safe this summer. For cyclists: • Wear a bike helmet every time you ride and remember to fasten the straps. • Wear brightly coloured clothing and reflectors to increase visibility. • Use bike lanes or designated bike paths whenever posible. For drivers: • Vehicles should always signal to notify cyclists of intentions. • Give ample room when passing a cyclist and do not follow closely behind. • Look behind and to the side before opening the door of a parked vehicle.

Go Play OUTSIDE!

This summer, explore Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows parks and outdoor spaces and check out our many outdoor recreation programs. Natural environments are unique, diverse and timeless. Outdoor areas with trees, vegetation and plants provide children with the opportunity to learn, to enhance play and to provide spaces for quiet reflection. Early exposure to nature helps children develop a sense of empathy for living things and an understanding of the lifecycle, creating a lifelong legacy of environmental stewardship.

Shawn Matthewson Recreation Coordinator 604-467-7464 [email protected]

“Children who are less resiricted in their access to the outdoors gain competence in moving through the larger world. Developmentally they should gain the ability to navigate their immediate environs (in safety) and lay the foundation for the courage that will enable them eventually to lead their own lives.” - National Association for the Education of Youth Children.

Summer Safety Tips SLIP - on protective clothing SLAP - on a hat SLOP - on sunscreen SLIDE - on a pair of sunglasses

Play helps children make sense of their world. Children learn best when their whole selves are involved: mind, body and spirit. Child-initiated play lays the foundation for learning and academic success. Children are active participants in their own development reflecting the basic human need to explore. Outdoor space offers unequalled opportunities for children to explore their evironment. A serious conequence of decreased outdoor activity has been an increase in childhood obesity rates.
