With an abundance of parks and playgrounds...

...you are provided a beautiful backdrop for a wide variety of activities!

Open Space & Trails

Using Open Space & Trails

Lying on the eastern flank of the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos enjoys a mountain backdrop amid the orange cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. The town spans three miles of the plateau, interrupted by deeply incised canyons that offer natural escapes within the town’s limits. White Rock lies on the edge of the 1,000-foot deep White Rock Canyon, carved by the Rio Grande.

Los Alamos County Open Space is open to non-motorized use only. Hiking, running, horse travel, and mountain biking are permitted on County trails.

The canyons and mesas in and around the county are linked by a 100 mile network of trails. Hikers and runners, horseback riders, mountain bikers, and other trail users delight in the variety of trails from which to choose. The trails offer a quick escape from the busy pace in town, a way to commute to work, an easy stroll or a physical challenge, and a chance to observe wildlife or soak in the views.

Share the Trail: These are multi-use trails for pedestrians, equestrians, and bicyclists. Bicyclists should yield to all other users.

Looking for a Trailhead? Watch for the “Trailhead” signs along major roads throughout the county. Find more information about the County Trail Network online: losalamosnm.us - Click on “Recreation” in the middle of the page. 10

Resource Protection: All cultural resources such as Ancestral Pueblo room blocks, pot sherds, petroglyphs, and historical artifacts are protected by Federal and State law. Let all cultural resources lie undisturbed.

Dogs in Los Alamos Country Open Space: All dogs must be on a leash within 100 yards of a trailhead. Dogs must be under voice and sight control at all times. Safety: When exploring trails, always carry water, sunscreen, a hat, extra clothing, a flashlight, and a navigational aid.
