WORSHIP From Green to Gold — August 14, 2016 For the past two weeks here I discussed the Green Bay Packers and some of the spiritual lessons this more secular aspect of life can teach us. I also mentioned my trip home to Wisconsin. As I begin this week I briefly want to inform you that I did indeed have a great visit with my family. Actually, it is always a pleasure to spend time with them. I got three days with them in Green Bay. It was training camp and what the Packers call Family Night. This annual event is a scrimmage “game,” so yes the Packers won! More importantly the team sells out the stadium for families to have an opportunity to watch some football action at a very affordable cost ($10.00 a ticket and $5.00 for a parking spot). In addition they have all kinds of games for kids, interviews with players, and really just a nice opportunity for families who are fans to get excited about a new season. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The Packers are the only team, as I understand it, who do anything like this. The lesson here is the importance of family. In other Packer related news the legendary former quarterback, Brett Favre, was inducted last weekend into the NFL Hall of Fame. There was to be a Hall of Fame game between the Packers and the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday night. That didn’t happen due to poor and unsafe playing conditions in regards to the field. The Packers thus had their first pre-season game this past Friday night in Green Bay against the Cleveland Browns. I tell you that simply because I am certain you wanted to know that. Obviously a pre-season game means little other than it is a time to continue to prepare for the games that do count. The lesson here is that in our lives many things are of little to no significance when it comes to our salvation, yet those events may prepare us for the things that really do matter before God. Another item I wanted to mention this week involves the seminarian who was with us for the summer. Hopefully many of you got to know Brian Accettullo. He was a delightful addition to our parish for the last two months. This is his last weekend with us. He will head back to the seminary, the Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, shortly. He was a real blessing. He visited the hospital weekly; he spent time with our shut-ins; he was very involved with our youth groups, running a boys’ day and assisting with various other youth activities; he served Mass; and helped out wherever he could, even helping with maintenance. In addition the diocese had him away for a vocations camp and World Youth Day in Poland. Now it is time to thank him and offer our prayers for him as he leaves us and continues his studies towards being ordained a priest in five years, Godwilling. Another vocations related item concerns a young lady of our parish who last weekend took her perpetual vows at the St. John the Evangelist Basilica in Stamford, CT with the Sisters of Life. This Sunday at the 10:45 a.m. Mass Sr. Maeve Nativitas will be with us. This Mass of Thanksgiving is an opportunity to pray for Sister and that other young people will consider answering a call from God to religious life. A reception will follow in the parish hall. That will be an opportunity to congratulate Sister. She is the daughter of Tom and Laurie O’Doherty. This too is a real blessing for our parish. I also want to thank all of those who contributed to the school backpack drive a couple of weeks ago. It was a real success as was the Vacation Bible School. We had numerous younger children involved who were “campers” (participants) and a number of teenagers who were volunteers. While there were also a number of adult volunteers, they were all under the direction of Erin Meunier. They again this year did a wonderful job, and I thank them for that. One final item, tomorrow, Monday, August 15th, is the feast of the Assumption. This is usually a holy day of obligation. As it is a Monday it is not obligatory, however, to encourage attendance at Mass an extra one has been added at 5:30 p.m. that evening. You may also want to offer a Rosary that day and for the next 53 days, an extended novena, praying for our nation. No doubt America needs prayers, a bit more on this next week. ~ In Christ, Fr. Kleinmann 4

FROM THE PARISH OFFICE The Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary 15th,

Monday, August is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast celebrates an important doctrine of the Church: “The Most Blessed Virgin Mary, when the course of her earthly life was completed, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven, where she already shares in the glory of her Son’s Resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all members of His body.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 974.) A common misunderstanding is that Mary “ascended” into heaven. Rather, it is Christ who, by His own power, ascended into heaven; Mary was taken up—assumed—by God into heaven. Her Assumption reminds us that we are meant not for this world, but for eternity with Our Lord in heaven. Although the liturgy for August 15th celebrates the feast, it is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year because it falls on a Monday. We have added an extra Mass this day, however, at 5:30 pm.

Jubilee Mass to be celebrated at 2:30 pm on Sunday, October 16th at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More. Contact the parish office to register no later than September 16th. For more info, visit www.arlingtondiocese.org/familylife/MJM.php.

A Unique Opportunity for “Policy and Procedure Wonks”

Have you been frustrated when submitting forms for reimbursement for apostolate events? Confused about what is, and what is not, allowed when planning events in the parish hall? Curious about all those "kitchen rules" and signature requirements? Here is an opportunity to be a part of the solution. The parish office staff plans to review the processes and procedures in the Apostolates Handbook to bring them in compliance with parish and diocesan policies, local ordinances, and accounting procedures necessary to conduct events on St. Veronica premises. We need your expertise. A small group consisting of two parish staff representatives, two apostolate/ ministry leads, and two parishioner volunteers will tackle this timely task. Two meetings only: one to review objectives and current policies; and a second meeting for final review of the A Message about School Supplies Drive 2016 Apostolate Handbook and presentation to Father Dear Blessed Mother Teresa Outreach Apostolate, Kleinmann for approval. We will identify issues, update processes, incorporate suggestions, reAn entire station wagon filled with backpacks search remedies and streamline forms. EDUCATION, CATECHESIS AND EVANGELIZATION Volunteer with Our Religious Education Program

“In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples . . . . All the baptized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization . . . . So what are we waiting for?” Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel Volunteers are vital to the success of the Religious Education Program. No experience is necessary. Becoming an Assistant Catechist, which is our greatest need at this time, is a great way to start, and all training is provided. The only requirement is to be a Catholic in good standing with a desire to pass on the Faith to the children of our Parish. And, all volunteers are eligible for tuition discounts. A new age began for the Church as Gentiles were accepted into the Kingdom of God. Peter's ensuing friendship with Cornelius helped Peter later when he fled from Herod Agrippa. The home of Cornelius became a haven and a point of transition as Peter moved from the Holy Land to Rome. In this session we will explore Peter's life in Rome and ultimately see how Peter obtained "the unfading crown of glory." Peter, a mere fisherman who became the rock of the Church, will give witness to all that is possible when we follow Christ. Interested in the Catholic Faith? In celebrating this month of Our Lady’s final journey to God in her glorious Assumption, let us ask her motherly intercession to draw souls to the Sacred Heart of her Son. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a journey, too—of conversion to God and what He intends for us. RCIA is the process by which persons who were never baptized, or were baptized in another Christian tradition, become members of the Church, a people on pilgrimage to our Heavenly Father. RCIA classes at St. Veronica will be held on Monday evenings from 7:30-9:00 pm beginning in September. For more information, please contact Scott Bradford at [email protected].
