Third Sunday of Easter

Our Lord’s call to us to forego sin by following His commandments, to repent, and to seek forgiveness connect today’s Scripture passages. St. Peter, in the Acts of the Apostles, calls us to reform our lives and turn to God. Likewise, St. John reminds us that Jesus is an offering for our sins. Through His death and Resurrection, Jesus freed us from sin. Faithful stewards acknowledge His true presence in the Eucharist, as did the disciples on the road to Emmaus after His Resurrection in the breaking of the bread. The Church has long taught that partaking of the Eucharist strengthens us on our journey as Christ’s disciples, and that participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the forgiveness of sins can draw us closer to Him, bringing peace to our lives.

Reflections for the Third Sunday of Easter Cycle B Acts 3:13-15, 17-19 Psalm 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9 1 John 2:1-5a Luke 24:35-48

take us some time to identify his presence, but it took the apostles in today’s gospel a little time to recognize him themselves.

COMMENTARY Let’s be honest here. The disciples had every right to be troubled. When Jesus asked, “Why are you troubled?”, they had just recently watched their teacher, friend and Lord die a terrible death. If that’s not troubling, what is? Looking at our own lives, it seems we have every right to be troubled ourselves, living in a world of pain, suffering and disappointment. It’s almost more natural to ask why in the world anyone would not be troubled? Thankfully, though, Jesus didn’t just present an unsolvable riddle. Before even asking the question, Jesus provided its answer: “Peace be with you.” When his disciples were lost and frightened, Jesus appeared to them and offered the peace that only he can give, a peace of endless caring and boundless love. For us, too, in a world that seems so hectic and confused, Jesus appears and offers the same remedy. This loving peace can be obscured in the midst of our struggles, but it’s always there if we’re willing to look for it. Jesus remains among us, appearing to us in many different ways. It might

FAITH SHARING ♦

What is your experience of peace?

Where do you recognize Jesus appearing recently in your life?

When overwhelmed by troubles, what might you do to calm down and refocus?

What blessings are you thankful for in your life and how can you share them with others?

RESPONSE in ACTION Now admittedly, Jesus probably won’t casually saunter into your living room, but he remains truly present in this world in other ways. He’s here in the beauty of the blossoming spring and the embrace of a loved one in a time of loss. He joins us in our moments of joy and stands by our side, even in our lowest moments and most difficult struggles, helping us to grow through these times and become better for having endured them. He’s alive in the world around us and in the people we encounter. Our call is to discover that he’s here and to appreciate his closeness to us. Instead of allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed by troubles, we should let him overwhelm us with his peace. We have Christ with us always, sharing that peace so we can do the same.

Go for a hike or take a walk. Instead of worrying about how fast you’re moving or how far you’ve gone, allow yourself to appreciate the presence and beauty of God surrounding you.

Serve at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter. Engage those who are there and try to be a small beacon of caring and peace in their time of struggle.

Many of those they serve are children, many abandoned or from broken homes, drug addicted people in every age group, elderly persons without a family and left to themselves, single mothers surviving miserably in stern shelters. Your support will assist the Sisters in operating a food pantry, soup kitchen and an after-school program and their work with the sick and elderly.

St. Mary of Gostyn Parish NEW PARISHIONERS: We are happy to welcome new members to our community, and encourage you to register either in person at the Rectory, or by printing our Registration Form on our website, www.stmarygostyn.org. BAPTISMS: St. Mary of Gostyn offers baptismal preparation sessions on a monthly basis. If this is your first child or it has been more than five years since you attended a baptismal preparation session at St. Mary’s or another parish, you will need to participate in a session before you can receive a date for your baby’s baptism. Parents are expected to be registered parishioners. Godparents play an important role in the faith life of your child. While considering who will be godparent(s) for your child, please be aware that at least one must be a baptized and confirmed Catholic who is active in his/her faith. (ref. Canon 874) Also, Catholic godparents must obtain a Sponsor certificate attesting to these qualifications from the parish at which they are currently registered before you can secure a baptismal date. Please call the parish office at 630-969-1063 if you have any questions, and to secure your baptismal date. For more details, please see www.stmarygostyn.org.

SACRAMENT of ANOINTING: We are pleased to administer the Sacrament of the Sick to those who are in need. The Eucharist will also be brought to those who are ill, upon request. Please notify the Rectory if members of your family are in the hospital or homebound. Communal Anointing is held on the 1st Saturday of the month at the 8:00 AM Mass. FUNERALS: Arrangements are usually made by the Funeral Home or by a family member. The wishes of the family will be respected. LITURGY of HOURS: Morning Prayer (Lauds) is prayed Monday through Saturday following the morning liturgies. MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least six months in advance to provide ample time for preparation of this sacrament. PRAYER GROUPS: Monday evenings at 7:30 PM in the Parish Center; Tuesday evenings at 7:15 PM in the Parish Center chapel. ROSARY DEVOTION: Monday through Saturday, 7:30 AM in the church; beginning September 12th, Rosary will begin at 6:30 PM on Monday evenings in the church. ANNULMENTS: We are available to help anyone who is in need of information about how to apply for an annulment. Please contact Deacon Al at (630)969-1063, ext. 221.
