Jesus is presented as the Christ, the “Anointed One” by God the Holy Spirit, come to do the Father’s will. As Isaiah prophesied: “Here I am, Lord, send me. A body you have prepared for me…” The Holy Spirit descends visibly and rests permanently upon Jesus Christ leading Him to the Cross and the Resurrection. Pope Benedict XVI writes: “The act of descending into the waters of this baptism implies a confession of guilt and a plea for forgiveness in order to make a new beginning. The significance of this event could not fully emerge until it was seen in the light of the Cross and Resurrection… Thus the Christian people understood that He inaugurated his public activity by stepping into

The question for us is: Do we adequately comprehend the deep meaning of our own baptism by which the stain of our first parent’s original sin is wiped away and we are restored to sanctifying grace? —by which we become adopted yet beloved children of the Father, members of the Mystical Body of Christ, and temples of the Holy Spirit? The Baptism of Jesus invites us to renew own baptismal promises and live every day the New Life God offers us in our own baptism. On a more personal note, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you— each and every one of you—whose kindness overflowed at Christmas with gifts and eatable goodies for us priests. Queridas Familias y Amigos de Santa Margarita María, El domingo pasado celebramos la Epifanía, el final de la temporada navideña. La fiesta del Bautismo del Señor siguió el lu nes, comenzando así la temporada litúrgica del tiempo ordinario. Todos los preparados por el bautismo de arrepentimiento de Juan Bautista se convirtieron en testigos de lo sucedido. Uno sin pecado apareció, y humildemente pidió ser bautizado, con el fin de "cumplir todas las cosas con justicia". Jesú s per m itió ser ba u tiza do por Juan por varias razones: comenzar su vida pública; permanecer en solidaridad con nosotros como pecadores (aunque El mismo no tenía necesidad de ser bautizado, siendo sin pecado); Para darnos un ejemplo que debemos seguir; Y (como señalan los Padres de la Iglesia) purificar todas las aguas que en adelante se usarán en el sacramento del Bautismo. En el bautismo de Jesús somos testigos del testimonio divino de la verdadera identidad de Jesús. El Dios Trino está presente. Oímos a Dios el Padre decir: "Este es mi Hijo amado, sobre quien descansa mi favor", a pr oba ndo oficia lm ente la misión pública de Dios el Hijo. Jesús es presentado como el Cristo, el "Ungido" por Dios, el Espíritu Santo, viene a hacer la voluntad del Padre. Como Isaías profetizó: "Aquí estoy, Señor, envíame. El Papa Benedicto XVI escribe: "El acto de descender a las aguas de este bautismo implica una confesión de culpa y una súplica de perdón para hacer un nuevo comienzo. El significado de este acontecimiento no pudo emerger completamente hasta que fue visto a la luz de la Cruz y la Resurrección... Así el pueblo cristiano entendió que Él inauguró su actividad pública al entrar en el lugar de los pecadores.... As we enter fall, the weather will soon change and we need your help. A few weeks ago as we prepared to leave to share lunches with our struggling brothers and sisters in Wilmington, Harbor City and Los Angeles a parishioner drove up with 20 brand new pup tents for us to give out to anyone in need. A couple of months ago she had left us 15 of these small tents. Our friends who received them were ecstatic. The tents were small to help capture their body heat and light and portable so that they could take with them as they move from place to place. This past weekend when we went out, we were able to share some of the grooming bags assembled at last year’s grooming bag night. We had our current RCIA group with us and they were touched by how much this gift, which might seem so small to us, was a treasure to each person who received it. Every little thing we are able to do for our brothers and sisters on the street touches them so deeply and gives them an opportunity to experience being loved with God’s love. On the weekend of January 28th and 29th we are asking for you to once again reach out to them with compassion. We are asking that if your last name begins with the letters N-Z that you bring your jackets, sweatshirts, socks, Levi pants and BLANKETS. Please remember that 90% of the people we meet are men and that the items we are looking for are quite specific. We want to help keep are brothers and sisters warm. As always thank you for your generosity. May our journeys this holiday season bring us a little closer to the kingdom of God.

6 JESUS NOS BAUTIZA Y CONSAGRA CON SU ESPIRITU Por Humberto Beltrán

El evangelio de San Juan en su primer capítulo, nos cuenta lo sucedido en los siete primeros días del ministerio de Jesús, como si se tratara de una Nueva Creación; nos revela gradualmente quién es Jesús y quienes estamos llamados a ser nosotros, los cristianos. La narración de hoy sucede en el segundo día del ministerio y nos descubre un nuevo aspecto de la identidad y de la misión del Señor. Jesús es 1) el Cordero de Dios, 2) el que quita el pecado del mundo, 3) el que bautiza con el Espíritu Santo, y 4) el elegido de Dios. Hay que tener en cuenta, como ya dijimos, que el evangelista San Juan nos dice quién es Jesús para que sepamos quiénes debemos ser los cristianos. Así como Jesús es la presencia visible del amor y de la acción del Padre en el mundo, idéntico con el Padre, así los cristianos hemos sido elegidos y destinados para ser la presencia visible del amor y de la acción de Jesús en nuestro mundo, totalmente idénticos e identificados con él. Jesús es el Cordero de Dios que quita el pecado del mundo: San Juan piensa principalmente en el Cordero Pascual que se va a sacrificar para obtener perdón y salvación para el mundo. Jesús es también el Cordero-Siervo de Yavé que irá silencioso al matadero en obediencia a la voluntad del Padre. Pero Jesús es también el Cordero poderoso que aparece glorioso y triunfante en el libro del Apocalipsis. Cada vez que participamos en la celebración de la misa, antes de la comunión escuchamos al sacerdote que levanta el pan consagrado y nos dice: “Este es el Cordero de Dios que quita el pecado del mundo”. ¿Nos hemos preguntado alguna vez por qué la liturgia llama a Cristo Cordero de Dios? ¿Por qué este título tan extraño? ¿Cuál es la semejanza de Cristo con un cordero? El cordero es uno de los animales que no tiene defensa o de agresividad (cuernos, garras, veneno, agilidad), es débil y pacifico. Con todo, el Cordero Pascual está destinado al triunfo, no al fracaso. Quien por primera vez llamó a Cristo Cordero de Dios fue Juan Bautista, cuando estaba bautizando en el Río Jordán. Los sacerdotes que habían ido a preguntarle si él era el Mesías

recibieron esta respuesta: “yo bautizo con agua, pero en medio de ustedes está uno a quien no conocen, que viene detrás de mí, a quien no soy digno de desatarle la correa de las sandalias” Jesús y los cristianos estamos llamados a quitar el pecado de nuestro mundo. Para quitar el pecado hay que ir a la raíz del pecado. No basta que una persona perdone siete veces al día las injusticias que le hacen a ella o que hacen a las otras personas; hay que procurar corregir y ganarse al pecador para que deje de cometer esas injusticias y haga reparación, para quitar el pecado el mundo. Reflexión. Ahora entendemos mejor la razón de este título, tan extraño a primera vista, con que Juan presenta a Cristo y que la iglesia repite en cada misa. Para nosotros, Cristo es el Cordero de la Nueva Alianza que con su sangre redimió de una vez y parar siempre a toda la humanidad. El cargo sobre sus hombros los pecados de toda la humanidad y ofreció al Padre el sacrificio de su propia vida, el único capaz de reconciliar a la humanidad con Dios. Este es Cristo en quien creemos, al cual seguimos y al que debemos imitar.

9 Al entrar el otoño, el clima cambiará y necesitamos su ayuda. Hace unas semanas, cuando nos preparamos para ir a compartir almuerzos con nuestros hermanos en Wilmington, Harbor City y Los Ángeles, un parroquiano trajo 20 nuevas tiendas de campaña para darles a los necesitados. Hace un par de meses nos dejó 15 de estas pequeñas tiendas. Nuestros amigos que las recibieron quedaron extáticos. Las carpas eran pequeñas para ayudar a mantener su calor corporal y luz y portátil para que pudieran llevarlas con ellos cuando se muevan de un lugar a otro. El pasado fin de semana cuando salimos, pudimos compartir algunas de las bolsas de aseo arregladas en una noche del año pasado. Teníamos a nuestro actual grupo de RCIA con nosotros y ellos se sintieron conmovidos por el contenido de este regalo, que puede parecer poco para nosotros, pero un tesoro para cada persona que lo recibió. Cada pequeña cosa que podemos hacer por nuestros hermanos en la calle los toca tan profundamente y les da la oportunidad de experimentar a ser amados con el amor de Dios. Una manera de expresar nuestro amor por nuestro prójimo es a través de nuestra manera de cobijas de Invierno. si su apellido comienza con las letras N - Z usted debe trae sus chamarras, sudaderas, calcetines, pantalones Levi y cobijas. el 28 y 29 de enero. At our first rug event in 2016, we sold enough to provide 15 Pakistani families who weave rugs a living wage for an entire year. We hope to support even more this year. ACCW Southwestern District Meeting The Southwestern District of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women will have a District Meeting on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 at St. Anthony Church (El Segundo)710 E Grand Ave., El Segundo. From the 105 West, use the Sepulveda south exit. Turn right on Grand Ave, proceed past the Church to Sierra St. Turn left and at the bottom of the hill, turn left into the parking lot. The day begins at 9;30 with Registration and Refreshments. The meeting begins at 10:00 Guest Speaker will be Anselm & Pia Varni. Their subject is “God’s Love in Surprising Ways”. They will speak on their experiences volunteering with the Catholic Relief Services in Malawi, Africa. Following the speaker, we will have Mass at 12.00 in the Church. Immediately following Mass, Luncheon will be served in the Hall. The meeting adjourns at about 2:00 P.M. The cost for the day is $10.00 (PREPAID) Reservations must be made by Friday January 20, 2017. FR. JOHN’S BIBLE STUDY GROUP

The Thursday Morning Bible Study Group, which is led by Fr. John, is beginning its study of St. Paul's Le er to the Ephesians. The group meets every Thursday from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Center. However, because of holidays and vacaons, there will be no mee ngs on January 12, January 26, and February 2. All are welcome to join, even if you have missed previous mee ngs or have never studied the Bible before. Please bring a Bible, or purchase a Bible for $10 at the first session that you a end. Each year a special liturgy is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the Roe V. Wade Supreme Court Decision. Following the Mass, we hold a ceremony honoring the lives lost to abortion.
