Weekly Message

Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Office of the Cardinal

My dear friends in Christ,

Our theme for the 2017 Diocesan Services Funds (DSF) is: Go Make Disciples! This is part of the Great Commission, given by Jesus Christ to his disciples at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. After his death and resurrection, Jesus appears to them at “the mountain to which [he] had ordered them”, and there, charges them to proclaim the good news of salvation to all the nations. They, who have been with him, were nourished by his teachings, and were witnesses to his public ministry. Now they are called to be agents of the mercies of God to others. This charge to Go Make Disciples is equally relevant for all of us today. As disciples of Christ, we are to be conduits for God’s loving mercy to others. The DSF is a vital means of responding to Christ’s invitation. It provides critical support and sustenance for over 60 Programs, which benefit many in this local Church. One important beneficiary of the DSF is Camp Kappe. Through DSF we are able to provide a path for many people to continue their growth in discipleship. At Camp Kappe they are provided with a serene atmosphere for prayer and retreat. Camp Kappe is also home to our Environmental Education School, an important learning center of opportunities for the young to care for our common home. Equally benefiting from the DSF is the Special Youth Services, through which we are able to mentor our at-risk youth and those in juvenile detention, providing them with pastoral counseling, Bible studies and catechesis. Your DSF support allows staff, seminarians, diaconate candidates and volunteers to reach out to youth who then become disciples to others. Making disciples for Christ entails inviting others to the community of God’s people. Through the Office of Vocations, another important beneficiary of DSF, we are able to accompany those seeking to follow Christ more closely as a priest or as a religious, and then go out to make disciples of others. I thank you for your gracious commitment in support of the Diocesan Services Fund. With gratitude to God for your faithful discipleship and praying God’s abundant blessings upon you, I am Your faithful Shepherd,

Daniel Cardinal DiNardo Archbishop of Galveston-Houston

The 2017 DSF goal for St. Mary Magdalene is $165,000.00

Children needing Reconciliation interviews should contact Mike, Ginger, or Carissa at 281-446-8211. Appearances of Our Lady: Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa witnessed mysterious, brilliant rays of light emanating from the tabernacle for three days beginning on June 12, 1973. Sixteen days later, a cross-shaped wound appeared on her left hand which began to bleed profusely and was very painful. One week later, this deaf sister heard a voice coming from a three-foot tall wooden statue of Our Lady; drops of blood flowed from the statue’s right hand. The wound remained in the statue’s right hand from July 6 to September 29, and on four occasions, blood flowed from the wound. The day the statue’s wound disappeared, the head and neck of the statue began to sweat. Sr. Sasagawa received three messages from Our Lady through this statue. In 1975, the statue began to weep; over the next almost seven years, the statue wept 101 times.

Breaking Open the Word for Families Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1: Zephaniah 2:3, 3:12-13 Seek the Lord. The prophet Zephaniah tells us that the Lord will leave as a remnant a people humble and lowly who shall take refuge in the Lord; these people shall be honest and upright. We should be those people: honest, humble, lowly, and upright. Reading 2: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 God chose the foolish to shame the wise, so that none might boast. St. Paul is not inter ested in making friends, as he calls the people weak, foolish, and lowly – those who count for nothing. This is not to hurt or shame the people, but to remind us that everything we have has been given to us. Whoever boasts, then, should boast in the Lord – the giver of every good gift. Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12A Rejoice and be glad! Jesus gives us the Beatitudes. With the wisdom of God, He sounds foolish to men: “Blessed are the poor” flies in the face of the thinking that God’s blessing shows up as earthly riches. “Blessed are those who mourn” makes no sense to our earthly ears. Jesus Christ shows us the Way to the Kingdom of Heaven. We would be wise to follow the foolishness of God.

Mensaje del Párroco

Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Office of the Cardinal
