A Global Perspective on World History

World History Encyclopedia Alfred J. Andrea, General Editor Carolyn Neel, Associate General Editor

Visit our booth at WHA! Come check out our latest titles, ebook collection and history databases.

20 Volumes An unprecedented academic undertaking reflecting an extraordinary new vision of world history, this landmark multivolume encyclopedia focuses on specific themes of human development across cultures era by era, providing the most in-depth, expansive presentation available of the development of humanity from a global perspective. Well-known and widely respected historians worked together to create and guide the project in order to offer the most up-to-date visions available. In the fields of history and history education, there is a growing trend toward focusing on “the big picture”—a history unlimited by borders focusing less on dates and countries and more on the defining themes of modern life. By examining these larger themes—population trends, environmental interactions, human migrations, religion and philosophy, science and technology, art and culture, and political organization—we broaden our perspective and begin to gain the deeper understanding necessary to function effectively in today’s global arena. When East Met West:

World History Through Travelers’ Perspectives Robert E. Niebuhr, Simmons College When East Met West presents illuminating primary sources into an organized and easily adaptable format to facilitate the teaching of Global History courses. A critical essay unveils the significance of what these historical travel accounts can tell us about how the past unfolded and challenges our view of the world today. All 20 source readings—in 6 sections—offer introductions and discussion points that are proven to foster critical thinking and classroom participation. This reader finally brings to the market the kind of interesting yet vital aid for instructors of Global History.

Features USD 17.99 | paperback, 219 pages, 6”x9” 44 images, 9 maps | ISBN: 978-0-9786597-2-1

Selections from sources in When East Met West: “The Chinaman’s mind is a profound and inexplicable puzzle that many have vainly endeavored to solve.” —J. Macgowan

“The natives greatly wondered at many of our things, for they had never seen nor heard of them.” —Eusenio Kino

• Readings on Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia/Pacific, China, the Americas, and Africa • An appendix featuring textual analysis and a selected word list to show how people use language • A comprehensive coverage on how people construct identity • Multidimensional and interdisciplinary approach to understanding the growth of the modern world

“The Simplicity of the Natives, their Dress and Manners, revived in my Mind the Idea of our first Parents; and I seemed to contemplate the World in its primitive State—they (the Negroes) are generally speaking, very good natured, sociable and obliging.”

Also from Trebarwyth Press • Lessons of the War in Spain, by Michael E.

—Anthony Benezet

Chapman, ed. • Historian’s Companion: Chronologies, Glossaries, Readings, Style Guide, by Michael E. Chapman

“To those who have not visited them, the Balkans are a shadow-land of mystery; to those who know them, they become even more mysterious, for, as one begins to fancy he has peered under the veil, he finds himself caught in its meshes, and the spell of the land has him in thrall.”

“Chapman’s critical edition is a noteworthy achievement, and it should be of interest and use not only to students of the Spanish Civil War, but also those interested in inter-war military thought in general.”

—Arthur D. Howden Smith

“The veil seems to be the most important piece of their dress: their chief care is always to hide their face. There have been many instances of women, who, upon being surprised naked, eagerly covered their faces, without showing any concern about their other charms.”

Geoffrey Jensen, Virginia Military Institute. Journal of Military History, 72:3 ( July 2008), pp. 970–71.

Call for Proposals and Manuscripts in

World History of Science University of Pittsburgh Press in a partnership supported by

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

I

n an effort to support innovative research, the University of Pittsburgh Press is launching a new initiative to significantly expand its list in world history of science. The press seeks additional titles in order to amplify its already strong backlist in world history of science and dramatically expand its list into fresh areas of promising historical research. Historical titles that are globally informed and that reach across traditional disciplinary boundaries will be given special attention. The press welcomes proposals that explore the world history of science in any culture and during any era. Funded by a major five year grant from the Mellon Foundation, this new expansion is undertaken in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of History’s World History Center. In addition to producing books, the press and its partners will cooperate in a number of activities to bolster the new acquisitions program, including guest lectures, new conferences, fellowships, and a book prize. Both experienced and new authors are strongly encouraged to submit proposals for new books and book series. If you would like to make a submission, have suggestions, or would like further information on the new initiative, please contact Beth Davis, editor for history and philosophy of science at [email protected] or 412-383-3174.
