November 9, 2014 “Be built up like living stones, into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood.”

1 Peter 2:5

The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica The Saint John Lateran Basilica was built and given to the Church by Emperor Constantine in 324 AD on a hill of Rome. The land was offered by the Lateriani family. The Lateran basilica was built to become the cathedral of the diocese of Rome and the mother church of all the churches of Rome and of the world. The Lateran basilica is the official cathedral of the Pope, although since the 15th century, the Pope almost always officiates at Saint Peter’s basilica. The Church has us celebrate today the consecration of the Lateran basilica. But, the readings of the Mass are directed at discovering the real house of God which is the Christian community. “You are the temple of God”, affirms Paul to the Christians of the city of Corinth. This temple is not the fruit of our work; it is rather a construction made of “living stones”, this is the house God has built to be his dwelling. This is what God reveals to us. Let us give grace to God for who we are, a humble community inhabited by the glory of God.

Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep and doves, as well as money changers. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.”

Parish Finances This week’s collection, including Parish-Pay was $5,819.00 Please be mindful that in order to keep up with our expenses, our weekly collection should be approximately $7,100.00. During the last few weeks the collection did not meet our weekly requirements. We urge our parishioners to be conscious of the needs of our parish and to make an extra effort to help us meet our weekly goal. God bless you for your generosity.
