December 30, 2012 Dear Parishioners, Once again a busy week - Holy Family Sunday and the beginning of the New Year. We also have early deadlines for the bulletin. This Sunday of Christmas week is Holy Family Sunday. What an appropriate time to celebrate families and pray for family life. While there are many family gatherings and joyful times during these days, there is also the reality of difficulties and estrangement in too many family situations. We all need to continue to pray for the strengthening of family life and for healing and patience in families that are broken. This week we also welcome a New Year - 2013. In addition to New Year’s celebrations, parades and football games, the Church calls us to celebrate Mary, the Mother of God, a holyday of obligation. This is a wonderful way to start off the New Year, as well. We will have a 5:00 Vigil Mass on Monday (New Year’s Eve) and 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 Masses on New Year’s Day. Make this a priority for your entire family. There are so many people to thank during these days. First - all those who helped in any way with decorating or assisting in our liturgies. St. Luke’s is beautiful - THANK YOU. Second - the parents of the CYO who coordinated Operation Santa Claus and the young people who worked on the project. Most importantly though, all those who supported this important program. For all those who see everything that was contributed, it is overwhelming. THANK YOU. Finally - on behalf of the priests and sisters, I thank you for all the goodies and kind gifts you share with us. Be assured of our grateful prayers. Enjoy the remainder of these Christmas holidays and may 2013 be filled with many graces and blessings for each of you.

DECEMBER 30, 2012 - HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY

A VOCATION VIEW

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Something about perfection is irksome, at least to some people. The story is told of the beleaguered Irish mother in the rear pew with her brood of six. After the priest had finished extolling the merits of the Blessed Mother in raising a family, she let out with a stage whisper, “Hmmpf, her with her one!” I believe even the Blessed Mother might laugh at that one a bit, without stooping to compare her unique suffering from swords to the heart over her Son. But when we see a fellow human doing much better than ourselves at almost anything, there is a twinge of jealousy mixed in with our admiration. We forget the work usually involved in reaching the goal. Whether it be an Olympic swimmer whose medal is the result of endless hours in the pool working out often before dawn, or the Broadway star whose rave reviews now began rehearsals months before opening night, the feeling is the same. The Church celebrates the Holy Family today for a variety of reasons. But certainly not for provoking resentment. Far from it, she wants to underscore the priceless value of family life for her own well-being and for that of all of human society. There is no substitute for it. Hardly accidental, happy family life takes work. One minute it is patience that is demanded, and another it is courage. Above all, family life is rooted in committed love. Parents first, for each other, and then for the children. Children reciprocate. Over time and through challenges and changes, the unit matures, expands, contracts, adjusts. Ever in need of a model, such an enterprise can do no better than the three people we know as the Holy Family. Here we have the melding of masculinity with femininity, and the ultimate in filial response. This twenty-first century has recently offered up unheard of challenges to family life, but none that can defeat it.

Jesus was born into a Holy Family, not a storybook family. Today, pray for married couples and for parents, who strive to remain faithful to their commitments in a changing and challenging world. (Luke 2:41-52)

SODALITY AND MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA DEVOTIONS Please join us most Tuesday morning, after the 8:30 am Mass. We recite the Novena prayers to Our Lady of Good Remedy and the Miraculous Medal Novena prayers. Devotions resume Tuesday, January 8. Donations for the votive candles may be put in the first collection basket. There is no need to put the money in an envelope.

HOLY DAY MASS SCHEDULE Mary, the Holy Mother of God Monday, December 31 5:00 pm Tuesday, January 1 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am

2013 CHURCH CALENDARS Church calendars, courtesy of William R. May Funeral Home, are available in the back of Church. Pick one up for a handy reference for fasts and feasts, parish phone numbers, and Mass times.

COMMUNION FOR THE HOMEBOUND Do you know that in our parish some of those who are homebound, long-term and short-term, are visited regularly by the priests of the parish and are visited weekly by parishioners who bring Communion? Please spread the word to those who may benefit from these visits. Have them call the rectory (early in the week, if possible) to arrange for the visits. The visits are a blessing to those who find it difficult to travel.

FAITH SHARING You are invited to be a part of the newest Tuesday morning faith sharing group for in-depth discussions of the Sunday readings. The group meets in Fr. Fitzpatrick Hall after the 8:30 am Mass on Tuesdays. Children and grandchildren are welcome! For more information call Teresa Warnick, 215-885-0349. Meetings resume January 8, 2013. The Men’s Gospel Reflection Group is looking for more men interested in praying and discussing Sunday’s gospel. We meet on Saturday mornings at 7 am in the Lyons Den. We start with prayer, read the Gospel for the next day and then share ideas about the Gospel and it's impact on our spiritual lives. All men are welcome regardless of your prayer practice or scripture knowledge! Coffee is provide and we finish by 8 am. Contact Ken Johnston at 215-327-3236 or [email protected] if you have any questions.

NEW POLICY AT ABINGTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL If you or a family member who is a patient wish to receive Communion on a Sunday at Abington Memorial Hospital you must ask the nurse to put in the request to the chaplain’s office. The request should be made on Saturday. This policy is to make sure that only patients who are able to consume solids are to receive Communion. 12/30/12—061 St. Luke—page 4

THE YEAR OF FAITH

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The Year of Faith is a time of grace, and we are invited to focus our attention particularly on the Word of God in the Scriptures and on the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, which is the very source of our Faith. We are also asked to deepen our knowledge of what we believe by studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the documents of Vatican II.

We celebrate the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick on the first Saturday of the month. The next Anointing is January 5 at 4:30 pm, just before the 5 pm Vigil Mass.

SCHEDULING BAPTISMS

We invite the rest of the parish community to join in our prayers for those who are sick. And we encourage those who have family, friends, and neighbors who are shutins to bring them to Mass on that Saturday.

Out of respect for the season, no baptisms (nor weddings) are held at St. Luke Church during Lent, which begins on February 13, 2013. If you wish to schedule a baptism, please call the rectory during office hours. New parents must first attend a prebaptism class held here once a month usually on the fourth Thursday of the month. The next class is January 24, 2013 at 7:30 pm.

RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults This is a process by which adults prepare for and are initiated into the Catholic Church. As part of the process there are meetings with those on the spiritual journey to become Catholics and those who journey with them as sponsors and RCIA team members. We also prepare adults to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Call Jeanne Kyle, 215-572-0128, for more information.

Keep our sister parish in Haiti in your prayers.

We invite those who • are of advanced age • have a serious illness (including mental illness) • are facing surgery in the near future • are in treatment for prevention of return of serious illness • those who are usually homebound to receive this sacrament.

Of course, the Sacrament will be administered to anyone in an emergency at any time. However, sick calls should not be deferred until the person is unconscious or in imminent danger of death.

MASS INTENTIONS The faithful who make an offering so that Mass can be celebrated for their intention, contribute to the good of the Church, and by that offering they share in the Church’s concern for the support of its ministers and its activities. (Code of Canon Law—Can. 946) Beginning in 2013, the stipends for Masses will be $20 for an announced Mass (the Mass will be at St. Luke Church at a specified date and time) and $10 for an unannounced Mass (the date, time, and location of the Mass to be celebrated are unknown when the intention is taken). Announced intentions may only be taken for up to a year in advance.

The Right-To-Life Committee will hold its first meeting for the new year on Monday, January 7 at 7:30 pm in the MMR. All parishioners are welcome to participate in this planning meeting. For info, contact Michael Miller, 215-886-9481 (h/w).

AID FOR FRIENDS Share your dinner with someone who is homebound. Cook a little extra and fill an ‘Aid for Friends’ tray. Freeze and place in the freezer (located in room just beyond chain linked fence in parking lot). For more information on the program at St. Luke call Kathy Cassidy, 215-8847971. Please note that the large freezer is the Aid for Friends Freezer. The smaller freezer is for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. And please make sure that the freezer door is completely closed when you are finished dropping off or picking up your meals. Thank you.

ST. MALACHY’S FOOD CUPBOARD There are bins by the church doors where you can place your nonperishable food donations for distribution to St. Malachy’s Church in North Philadelphia and our St. Vincent de Paul Society.

ST. JOHN’S HOSPICE St. John’s feeds a large number of homeless people each day. They are extremely thankful for the generous support that they receive from St. Luke’s each month. Easy casserole recipes are located at the rear of the church and on our web-site (http:// www.stlukerc.org/casseroles.htm). Pans are located in church. Please bring frozen casseroles to 213 Cliveden Ave. prior to 9 am on our Donation Days, the third Monday of each month. For more information call Mary Fran McNamara, 215-8869649. The next Donation Day is Monday, January 21. 12/30/12—061 St. Luke—page 5

HEARTS AND HANDS QUILTERS—A BRIEF HISTORY Over a decade ago, a group of women from our local churches – St. Luke R.C., St. Paul’s Lutheran, Carmel Presbyterian, Glenside UCC, Glenside/Abington United Methodist, St. David’s R. C. – as well as St. Augustine’s R. C. in Bridgeport and Redeemer Lutheran in Penndel – set up their sewing machines in Father Fitzpatrick Hall at St. Luke’s on April 11, 1999. They had an ambitious goal: to make 50 quilts for the refugees in Kosovo. And they did it! Sewing for people who needed the comfort that only a handmade quilt can bring turned out to be such a rewarding experience that the women decided to form a charity quilt group. Thus Hearts and Hands was formed, with a mission to help the homeless, the hurting, the poor, the suffering and the dying among us. Hearts and Hands has made and distributed over 800 quilts (beside the 50 that went to Kosovo). Among the recipients are: ♦ Cradle of Hope and Our Lady’s House in Glenside ♦ Ken-Crest ♦ Laurel House ♦ Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April) ♦ Salvation Army ♦ Aid for Friends

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Contributions can be made to assist in the Society’s work with the poor. Envelopes are on the tables in church. The envelopes can be placed in the regular collection basket. Support activities for children: buy Grocery Gift Cards. Available after weekend Masses in Church and at the Rectory weekdays [email protected]

♦ Care-Net ♦ Safe Harbor (children whose parents have died) ♦ Keystone, Abington and Holy Redeemer Hospices ♦ Lutheran Children and Family Services ♦ Hurricane victims ♦ Wounded soldiers returning from Iraq They also made a quilt out of old wedding gowns for the Making Memories Foundation (it earned over $500 for the charity). They put together several quilts made from blocks created by autistic children for the Autism Society, and they sent a dozen quilts to families of the New York Firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. In 2009 Hearts and Hands donated a quilt, “Celtic Blues,” which was also used as a very successful fundraiser for our sister parish in Haiti. Hearts and Hands has fostered deep friendships among its members, and shares devotions and dessert at their meetings in the Father Fitzpatrick Hall on the second Friday of each month, from 9:30 am to 1 pm. No quilting skills are necessary; members work together to produce simple, hand-tied quilts. If you are interested in joining the group, call Bonnie Dalzell at 215-887-7191.

Use the bins in our parking lot for paper recycling. No cardboard, please

ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT We are considering forming a Support Group for Caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s at the parish. If interested contact Jeanne Kyle at the rectory, [email protected] or 215-572-0128. For a 24-hour helpline: 1-800-2723900 or www.alz.org.

BABY QUILT RAFFLE Hearts and Hands, an interfaith charity quilting group, has given St. Luke Church three baby quilts to be raffled off to raise funds for our sister parish in Haiti. These quilts are pictured on the next page—but the photos do not do them justice. In order to see them please come to the hall following any of the Masses the weekend of January 12 & 13. These quilts as well as some of the other quilts made by the Hearts and Hands Quilters will be on display. There will be refreshments as well, courtesy of the Peace and Justice Committee. Raffle tickets are $1 each, six for $5. The tickets with payment may be returned in the collection basket until January 27. Additional tickets may be purchased at the rectory until February 1. They will also be sold at the Quilt Show (January 12 & 13). Be sure to indicate your quilt choice on the ticket. (One choice per ticket.) In the case of unclear or no marking, a member of the Peace and Justice Committee or a member of the staff at the rectory will make the decision. The winning tickets will be drawn after the 8:30 am Mass on Saturday, February 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, which is the feastday of our sister parish.

RCIA Or How to Become a Catholic This is a process by which adults prepare for and are initiated into the Catholic Church. As part of the process there are meetings with those on the spiritual journey to become Catholics and those who journey with them as sponsors and RCIA team members. RESPECT LIFE THOUGHT: Sanctuary of Life This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. Though He was conceived of a virgin, Jesus nevertheless lived as a son in a human family -- a family which points the way for the rest of us. The family is the sanctuary of life. There can be no life without family, and there can be no family without life. The family, above all, is where life is to be welcomed, no matter how fragile or inconvenient it may be.

RESPECT LIFE PRAYER: That governments may protect the institution of marriage, designed by God as the union between one man and one woman. One of the many reasons why the Pope and bishops identify abortion and euthanasia as pre-eminent issues is because these crimes are committed by one family member upon another. May the Holy Family lead us to a Culture of Life!
