The Calling of Saint Matthew, by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio St. Matthew’s feast day is September 21.

Each year, a special collection is taken for the support of St. Joseph’s Seminary and the archdiocesan seminary system; this year’s collection will be taken in October. (Because of an error by the envelope company, the envelope was in the packet for last week; we’ll take up a collection the first weekend in October, and will include what was received last week.) In preparation for that, seminarians are sent for a weekend visit to different parishes throughout the archdiocese. Next weekend, we will welcome two seminarians, Michael Ugbor and Joseph Dutan; one will speak briefly at each Mass about the seminary and the appeal. Please join me in welcoming them! +++

SIGNATURE & RELATIONSHIP (MUST BE A FAMILY MEMBER)

As previously announced, the first youth group meeting of the new school year is this evening from 6:00 to 7:30pm in the parish house (67 Murray Avenue). All teens in grades 8 through 12 are welcome. We’ve prepared a schedule of meetings, apostolic works, and events for the fall; this is available on the parish website, and is included in my weekly Flocknote. Our principal goal in gathering our teens together, as with everything we do, is to help them grow in their own relationships with Christ. That’s why the catechetical component of the monthly meetings is the centerpiece. To that end, I’ve asked Rebecca Loomis to lead the meetings, at least for the fall. Becca is known to many at St. John’s; she and her family are longtime parishioners. After graduating from Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, Becca spent the last three years working for an organization called St. Paul’s Outreach (www.spo.org); she spent one year at Arizona State University, and two at Texas State University. While there, she essentially served as a missionary — quite successfully — to college students. We’re sometimes led to believe that twenty-something’s are a “lost cause” as far as the Faith goes, though nothing could be further from the truth. In any event, it’s vitally important that our teens see and hear from someone not much older than they, who loves Christ and the Church and takes the gospel seriously. Please continue to pray for our teens, their parents, their teachers and coaches, and all who work to help them see how much God loves them, and the great things He has in store for them!

+++ It seems that my column last week led some to conclude that they shouldn’t “bother” me with various things, because Fr. Jeff and I are so “busy.” That wasn’t my intention – and I want nothing more than to be “bothered” for confession, spiritual counseling, sick calls, baptism interviews, teaching and the like! Those are what we do – and nothing brings us greater joy. When I was assigned to St. Mary’s in Port Jervis in 2007, I inherited a parish “business manager” – a retired executive, Jim Wilcox, who is a lifelong parishioner there. Jim was a godsend and spared me much administrative work, for which I have little aptitude and even less patience. His presence freed me up to do genuine pastoral work, and I will be forever grateful that he was on staff for all but the last few months of my tenure. I am working to introduce a similar position here. The administrative end of a pastor’s life has just become too complex for one person to manage it all. Even in the nine years that I’ve been a pastor, the demands have grown exponentially. There are financial protocols, insurance regulations, requirements for contractors, and a dozen other things that seem to change with dizzying regularity. There are plenty of lay people who are much better able to assimilate and administer those things than I’ll ever be. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann

Nature’s Own Reliquary RICHARD UPSHER SMITH, JR. Have you ever imagined that a person could stand inside a martyr’s reliquary? This summer I did, and you can, too, at least as long as a courageous group of Catholic lay people are able to keep Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine at Auriesville, NY, open. This shrine, which is the location of the National Shrine of the North American Martyrs and birthplace of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, was established by Jesuits in 1885, and was a great pilgrimage site through much of the twentieth century. However, with the decline in the practice of pilgrimage in recent decades, the Jesuits struggled to maintain the shrine, and in 2015 handed it over to a newly organized non-profit called The Friends of Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine, Inc., the board of which is chaired by the Most Rev. Edward Scharfenberger, Bishop of Albany. Bishop Scharfenberger has declared his hope that the restored shrine will become a center of the new evangelization. However, the Diocese of Albany is not supporting the shrine financially. Therefore, it is up to concerned Catholics everywhere to begin to make pilgrimages and generous donations to this blessed site. Pope Pius XII called this shrine “nature’s reliquary—the verdant hill that slopes up from the quiet easy-flowing river of the Mohawks.” At the top of that verdant hill, there is now a shady, grassy square marked by exquisite mosaics of the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady, much in need of repair, which was the location of the Mohawk town of Ossernenon in the seventeenth century. To this town, in the summer of 1642, Mohawk warriors brought two captive Jesuits and several captive Christian Hurons, including a girl baptized Thérèse. The captives had already been badly tortured at the place of their capture, and on an island in Lake Champlain, where the Mohawk warband had stopped at a large encampment of confederated Iroquois warriors. They faced further torture at Ossernenon and neighboring towns, until it was decided to execute the notable Christian Hurons, but to enslave the others along with the Jesuits. Aside from administering savage beatings, cuttings, and burnings with coals, the natives had ripped out the prisoners’ fingernails with their teeth, and had gnawed the captives’ fingers almost to stumps. As leader, Fr. Jogues was treated worst of all, and his left thumb was sawn off with a clam-shell. Even as slaves, Fr. Isaac Jogues and René Goupil, a donné or lay apostle, whom Jogues had just admitted to the order, preached and healed and baptized as much as they could. However, Goupil was seen signing an Indian child with the sign of the Cross by the child’s grandfather, who suspected Goupil of sorcery. On the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, while Fr. Jogues and Goupil were walking outside the palisade of the town saying their Rosary together, two young braves, incited by the suspicious grandfather, approached them. One drew a tomahawk from beneath his blanket, and split Goupil’s skull. Jogues quickly knelt beside Goupil to give him absolution, and heard his last words, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!” Jogues was hurried inside the town by the assassins, and Goupil’s corpse was dragged to the head of a ravine about 300 yards from the southwest corner of the palisade, where, one surmises, the refuse of the town was usually dumped to be eaten by animals and washed away by the stream, which is exactly what happened to the body of St. René—we may call him that now. To be continued. Page 6 - 446 St. John
