October 19, 2014 “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord all the lands. Tell his glory among the nations; among all peoples: His wondrous deeds.” Psalm 96:1

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the gospel reading of this Sunday, some Pharisees accompanied by a few supporters of the civil power ask Jesus a question about paying taxes to the government in order to discredit Jesus in his role of teacher. Jesus confuses his opponents and gets out of their trap by saying: “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” Jesus makes a distinction between God and all the Caesars of the world. God is the first to be served. Then the debate, at first focused on religious and political matters, is raised by Christ to a spiritual level, that is, the relationship with God. All human beings are made in the image and likeness of God whatever their background, their gender, or their social rank. All are called to adoration as their duty toward God. The state has the duty to establish organizations to promote the development of men and women. For this reason, Jesus agrees that the State has the right to set taxes.

The Pharisees plotted to trap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him saying, “Teacher we know you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. What is your opinion: is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” Knowing their malice Jesus said, “Why are you testing me? Show me the coin that pays the tax.” They handed him a Roman coin. He said “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” They replied, “Caesar’s” At that he said to them, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”
