FROM THE BISHOP

Support the Collection for the Church in Latin America — Next Weekend Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Only individuals blessed by the projects funded by the Collection for the Church in Latin America can adequately explain the true value of each dollar that has been provided by your generous support of this Collection. One such person, Jainae-Sao Leopoldo, says: “I have lived moments of profound emotion, things that have to do with the heart, coming from moments of sharing, but especially coming from an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ that does not stop growing. I have started to pray and to remember more the youth, the poor, and the discriminated, people for whom I have a dear love and special vocation.” Jainae is one of 120 young participants of project Neotefilo from “Instituto de Pastoral de Juventude.” This project, funded by the Collection for the Church in Latin America, took place in the Brazilian parish of Nossa Senhora de Nazare. It helps young participants deepen their understanding of the Bible, liturgy, and spirituality. These young people face poverty and unemployment due to a short supply of jobs. This and other projects in the parish provide 25,000 young people the tools they need to grow both in their relationship with Christ and professionally. Last year our diocese donated $235,053.59. Please be generous in the Collection for the Church in Latin America and encourage the youth to live faith. Your support will truly make a difference. God bless you, Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet For information on the projects funded by this Collection, please visit www.usccb.org (Church in Latin America Collection).

YEAR OF FAITH DIOCESE OF JOLIET

CATECHISM CORNER

As the Magi offered gifts to the Christ Child at Epiphany, we take this month of new possibilities to celebrate the Holy Spirit, the giver of life to the world and our Advocate who guides us in truth (Jn 16:133). We celebrate the life of all God’s people, from conception to natural death, and all the time in between where the Spirit infuses us with strong faith, good works, and courage to proclaim the Good News (just as the Spirit did in Acts 2:1-47). We celebrate the gift of God’s Word, recorded in the Holy Scripture, which guides our lives and gives us the opportunity to hear the voice of the Lord — and in “Dei Verbum” (Second Vatican Council), that encourages all people of faith to keep close to their hearts and minds every day of their lives. January 20: “This joint mission henceforth brings Christ’s faithful to share in his communion with the Father in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit prepares men and goes out to them with His grace, in order to draw them to Christ. The Spirit manifests the risen Lord to them, recalls His word to them and opens their minds to the understanding of His Death and Resurrection. He makes present the mystery of Christ, supremely in the Eucharist, in order to reconcile them, to bring them into communion with God, that they may ‘bear much fruit.’" JANUARY PRAYER INTENTION For a greater respect for human life. Scripture Reflections for the SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDIANRY TIME

less important than others. Those which are truly the most important are those which serve to build up the community (e.g., wisdom, knowledge, faith, etc.).

LIVING IVING the WORD Sunday, January 20, 2013 TODAY'S FOCUS: OUR EXTRAVAGANT BRIDEGROOM We find many titles for Jesus in the Gospels: Lord, Messiah, Son of David, and, His own preferred title, the Son of Man. One paid less attention, although worthy of it, is Jesus the Bridegroom. As a guest at Cana, Jesus signals He is the Bridegroom we have been longing for.

FIRST READING The bridegroom rejoices in his bride (Isaiah 62:1-5). This beautiful hymn celebrates the vindication and restoration that God would visit upon Israel. She had suffered terribly during the exile in Babylon and things had not been much better for her when she returned to Israel after that exile (for the land was totally devastated). The passage uses matrimonial imagery to describe the new relationship between God and His people. This is a theme that Hosea had developed when he compared the love between Yahweh and His people to the love between a husband and a wife. SECOND READING One and the same Spirit distributing them individually to each person as he wishes (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Paul reminds the community of Corinth that all gifts come from the Holy Spirit for sake of the community. Therefore, they should not cause one to develop a sense of arrogance. They do not belong to any of us. They were given to us to be held in trust (for they are from God and are to be rendered back to God in the way that we use them). Paul subtly argues that the more spectacular gifts of the Holy Spirit (such as the gifts of tongues) are really

GOSPEL Jesus did this as the beginning of His signs at Cana in Galilee (John 2:1-11). Jesus performs the first miracle. In this passage Mary is not called by name, but referred as the mother of Jesus. She is being presented as queen mother who prepares the wedding feast for her son. Jesus’ response to His mother’s request is not a sign of disrespect. Nevertheless, Mary orders the servants to listen to her son (something that she always does). There are six stone jars. There is too much wine. An abundance of wine is a sign of the Messianic banquet in heaven. Jesus serves the better wine (New Covenant) that replaces the earlier, not as good wine (Old Covenant). This prefigures the event that would give us access to the heavenly banquet: the cross (which is why Jesus spoke of His hour, the hour of glory). REFLECTION Weddings of the famous have become known for their extravagance. Syndicated radio host Diane Rehm once recalled how she and her husband had gone to two weddings over a few months, each costing over twenty thousand dollars, and neither marriage lasted a year. It seems that as expenses have increased, longevity has decreased. Even so, our faith holds up one marriage whose extravagance is located in its fidelity: Christ’s love for His bride, the Church. One of the less remembered titles Jesus applies to Himself in the Gospels is the bridegroom. When asked why His disciples do not fast, He replies that as long as the Bridegroom is present, there is no fasting. It is a time for celebration. Jesus remains the Bridegroom the Father sent to woo God’s people. The generous and extravagant abundance of the Bridegroom comes across in next week’s miracle at Cana. Even though He has said His hour — that is, the hour when He reveals the extravagant love of God—has not yet come, still Jesus yields to His mother’s request to remedy the embarrassment of a wedding without wine. The moral: when the Bridegroom comes, there will be endless joy. Ordinary Time begins with this marvelous story, proclaiming that God’s generosity cannot be overestimated. We see it in the gifts St. Paul mentions in his letter to the fractious Corinthians, gifts that continue to be given. Such abundance and variety of gifts reflect God’s extravagant love for us. Such gifts are given for the good of all.

SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE SUNDAY

PRO LIFE REFLECTION

January 20 40 years ago our country made abortions legal, yet our work is never ending... For those in the difficult position of facing an unplanned pregnancy, the Gospel of Jesus Christ remains the only true hope in the midst of seemingly hopeless circumstances. The Body of Christ, His Church, must stand in the gap on behalf of our land, and renew our commitment to care for those less fortunate, not out of misguided pity or self-righteous judgment, but out of a God-given compassion for all people – for we each are shaped in the very image of God Himself. It is time to restore the family unit. One thing we do know is for every woman who seeks our services, there is a young man and they are in some kind of relationship. The staff and volunteers of PASS Pregnancy Care Centers have faithfully served the South Suburbs for 29 years. Through the support of churches, businesses, and families PASS has always offered its services free of charge. Women, men, and children are being set free from the bondage of sin through the life-changing power of Jesus Christ. In addition to sharing the Gospel with our clients, PASS Pregnancy Care Centers ministers in a number of different ways, including: Pregnancy Services. Free and confidential services including pregnancy tests, limited OB ultrasound, options counseling, material resources including: maternity and baby clothing, diapers, formula, car seats and furnishings. IMPACT! Abstinence Education. Teaches young people the benefits of abstinence, and enables healthy choices. PASS takes the vital abstinence ‘til marriage message to schools, churches and youth organizations. Hope and Healing. Restores the lives of women and men struggling with issues related to past hurts, abortion, abuse. It is our hope that by serving the women and men in our community by meeting their physical, emotional and material needs, they will see the love of Jesus Christ and will cling to the hope offered only in Him. Our goal is to share God’s love with expectant mothers and fathers, so they will open their hearts to Jesus and they will choose life. He is the reason for the existence of this ministry, and He is the reason that over 750 women chose life for their unborn children last year alone. Now with the acceptance of chemical abortions (Abortifacients) the devil is at work desensitizing our youth to yet another level of secrecy. PASS is working for eyes to be opened to the long term effects of abortion, which affects us all.

Whoever does not take up his own cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple. —LK 14:27 To stand up for what it right means we stand against what is wrong. Those who love what is wrong will oppose us, just as they oppose Christ. Taking up the cross means we continue standing for the right even when that opposition comes. Lord, thank you for the grace of being pro-life and of standing strong when others ridicule and oppose me. May Your peace fill my soul, and may I become more like Your Son.

ADORATION CHAPEL OF MERCY

As we have entered into a new year on both the liturgical and civil calendars and made our New Years resolutions, I hope one of those resolutions was to grow in your faith and to know our Lord more intimately. To help you grow in your relationship with our Lord, consider spending an hour with Him in Eucharistic Adoration. You are welcome to spend time with Him in the Chapel of Mercy, but are especially invited to commit to a regular hour each week. The following hours need regular adorers. Please fill out an Invitation to Adore and drop it at the church office or in the offering, or Email [email protected], or call 708748-4394 (please leave message).
