There’s still some time left … There is still time to join Finneytown families, teachers, and support staff in becoming a PTA member and participating in our PTA fundraisers. Proceeds from Flower Sale, PTA/Kroger cards & Script cards support many activities from which students, teachers, and our school community benefit directly. We provide financial support for teacher appreciation, community service, and student activities & recognition. For example, $8,000 dollars are awarded to After Prom, Senior graduation activities, and scholarships. PTA is also the oldest and biggest advocacy group in the United States for quality public education. Together we are making a difference right here in Finneytown. Get on our e-mail distribution list and “like us” on Facebook so we can stay connected.

NATIONAL & OHIO PTA NEWS Ohio PTA Position Statement for Charter Schools:

After the Conference

Charter/Community Schools must:

When discussing a parent/teacher’s conference with your student afterward, stress the good things that were covered and be direct about problems that were identified. If an action plan is in place, explain to your student what was arranged. When an action plan is in place, consider the following:

Be open to all students.

Abide by all federal and state laws which protect the health and safety of children, prohibit discrimination, and comply with the Freedom of Information and Open Meetings Acts and Americans With Disabilities Act. Comply with federal and state laws governing public schools which require fiscal responsibility and accountability.

Comply with federal and state laws governing public schools regarding student assessment and reporting the resulting data. Be accountable to the school boards in their local school districts; those with no location (Internet/electronic schools) should be accountable to the state school board. Ensure that professional faculty and staff are highly qualified as defined by No Child Left Behind Act, 2002, for the positions they hold and receive ongoing education throughout their employment.

Involve parents or guardians in meaningful ways including: decision making, communication, volunteering and collaborating.

Have a mechanism for independent evaluation to determine if they are providing students with an education at least comparable to the public schools in their area Routinely evaluate their mission and monitor the progress of fulfilling their specific mission of innovation as stated in their contract.

Charter/Community Schools must not:

Be sponsored or operated by forprofit organizations, nor be affiliated with a non-public sectarian or religious school.

Divert money from public schools

Charge tuition or fees not charged by public schools.

articles, or to include a calendar of

Watch your student’s behavior and check on classwork and homework. Ask how your student feels about schoolwork. Stay in touch with the teacher to discuss your student's progress. Express appreciation as progress is made. Validate, validate, validate their efforts. A good way to promote a continuing relationship with the teacher is to say "thank-you" with a note or a telephone call. Keeping in touch with the teacher, even if things are going well, plays an important role in helping your student achieve education goals and develop strong interpersonal social skills. When students know that parents and teachers are working together, the student will see that education is a high priority requiring commitment and effort.

OHIO HOUSE BILL 116 On Wednesday, January 25, 2012, the House concurred with changes made in the Senate on HB 116. The anti-bullying legislation, sponsored by Rep. John Barnes (D-Cleveland), adds several anti-bullying provisions to Ohio law. It was signed by Gov. Kasich. Some of these provisions are requiring annual age-appropriate instruction to all students enrolled in a district if state or federal funds are appropriated for th is purpose; requiring schools to annually communicate their bullying policy to students, in addition to a written statement sent to parents, which may be sent with regular student report cards or delivered electronically; requiring school boards to incorporate training on the board’s policy into its in-service training; defining cyberbullying in the definition of bullying; allowing for anonymous reporting of bullying; prohibiting making false reports of bullying; and adding school buses to the places that the policy should cover.

OHIO HOUSE BILL 136 We challenged you to make legislative contacts on this issue and you responded! Finneytown School District & Board of Education led the way passing a resolution opposing HB136 after which many school districts throughout Ohio followed. We are being encouraged by key legislators to keep the pressure on the members of the General Assembly. That is why we're asking you to reach out again to the House. House Bill (HB) 136 continues to be a hot issue at the Statehouse. Even if you have already communicated with the state representatives and legislators, we urge you to make another contact! Another concern is that there will be amendments added to HB 136 in an attempt to secure votes and split the education community. It is important to note this is not about academic issues, but about subsidies for private tuition in the name of “choice.” We must be clear that this is an attack on public education and that the supporters will not stop until private tuition for families is supported without regard to the academic program in their district. HB 136 is not an isolated issue — it represents a bigger movement toward the privatization of public education. For all advocacy issues, go to www.ohiopta.org for current information & updates.

PTA PARENT’S “TO DO” PAGE: The Senior Video Committee is looking for three (3) photos of your senior "through the years"-- these photos depict your student growing up: from a baby picture to grade school years and finally the senior photo. In addition, the Senior Video Committee is looking for two (2) group photos of your student with a group of his/her friends. Clearly label the photos with the student name. Each student will have an envelope available in the main office to keep photos organized for easy return. For your convenience, you may send photos to Patty Kathman 1043 Thornfield Lane Cincinnati, OH 45224. Mrs. Kathman can even pick them up if needed. The deadline is April 27, 2012 for all photos. If you have questions, please contact Patty Kathman at 235-4282. Seniors will have a dinner May 29 and we will watch the video after dinner.
