STIHL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS...

By: Ian Robinson

Remember what the Internet was supposed to be?

in a position to be any woman’s younger man, given the whole wife thing.

Helpful Hint: Wasn’t supposed to be this.

Turns out the drawbacks are that the guy’s snowboard and beer bong will be the most important things in his life — and that the older woman will come in as a respectable third.

Wasn’t supposed to be so … not helpful.

After that, I clicked to a YouTube channel featuring a charming young man launching common household objects into the air and shooting them with a shotgun.

Supposed to spark a new enlightenment. Supposed to make us better. Education would be everywhere, accessible at the click of a mouse or a tap on a tablet. Ignorance would be obsolete. You got a phone with Wi-Fi? You got answers.

It had never occurred to me that you can use a microwave as a sporting clay. Also looked at a picture called ‘Norwegian firefighter saves bunny.’ It’s a firefighter holding an oxygen mask over a bunny’s face after he rescued it from a burning building.

“Wonder how a nuclear reactor works?”

I also enjoyed spectacular dashboard camera crashes from Russia, guys doing dumb stuff with snowmobiles — did you know you could drive those things across open water?

Click: Answer. “What are the principles that govern economies?”

Well, for a little while anyway.

Click: Answer. “Who is Grandmaster Flash and why is he important?” Click: Answer. “What are the side effects of this tablet whose name I cannot pronounce that my doctor prescribed for me? Click: Answer.

By the time I was done, I swear I wasn’t even a little bit smarter. I was certainly not enlightened. I did have one thought: Maybe the problem isn’t the Internet. Maybe we’re just using it wrong. I dunno. Why don’t you Google it and get back to me.

Cause the side effects of every medication sound like the symptoms of every disease you fear. I don’t know why they make medicines to treat something relatively benign like Restless Leg Syndrome — Note to readers: I didn’t make that up, although I wish I had — whose side effects are Eight Unique Ways To Die.

I don’t know about you, but here’s what I did on the Internet today. Went to a legit news organization’s website where I read something important and richly meaningful about the world. Instead, I read: ‘Jennifer Aniston goes shirtless to Critics’ Choice Awards’ and ‘Kristen Stewart wears another transparent dress.’ I guess the above statement isn’t really true — unless the definition of ‘reading’ has changed. (Back to the parenthetical comments. If celebrities want paparazzi to quit bothering them, maybe they might consider throwing on some clothes before they leave the house.) For reasons I don’t understand, I also read ‘The 7 Harsh Realities of Dating A Younger Man.’ It’s not like I’m in the market for a younger man — my wife would probably have something to say about it. And it’s not like I’m

The world doesn’t exactly look like that, does it?

The Net meant we would understand one another across borders and cultures. Bigotry? Gone. It was gonna be like that old Coke commercial: “I’d like to teach the world to sing … in perfect harmony.”

Before the Internet, you needed to know something, you had to: 1. Go to a library. 2. Find somebody smarter than you. (Not gonna lie, that one’s always been easy for me.) 3. LITHIUM-ION CHARGING FULL SPEED AHEAD By Chad Dubois, National Technical Services Manager

Another great benefit to the STIHL lithium-ion line-up is the fact that they do not need gasoline. They are literally plug and play with very little maintenance and effort required by the operator. Gone are the days of carburetor rebuilds, purchasing and mixing fuel and having to worry about winter storage. Just put the battery in and go! When you’re finished the job, store the tool and forget about it until the next time you need it. The ease of use and shear convenience factor of our lithium-ion products make them an easy choice for all types of consumers from professional to residential users. The STIHL lithium-ion tools have opened up an entire new range of applications given the fact that they can be used indoors. From construction work to roof installers to interior framers, there is a STIHL lithium-ion tool ready to step-up to the task.

There is something to be admired when the beauty of a design is its simplicity. This is what comes to mind when I think of STIHL’s line-up of lithium-ion professional tools. Having had the opportunity to use each and every tool extensively, I can truly say that they are an absolute pleasure to work with in every aspect. Zero emissions, lightweight, low-noise and odourless are all attributes that catapult these professional tools to the front of the pack when it comes to technological breakthroughs. But don’t be fooled, these tools are designed for professionals and perform as such all day long. STIHL’s lithium-ion battery tools boast many of the same great features that our line of professional gasoline tools do; features like captive bar nuts, translucent oil tanks, tool-less caps and magnesium components just to name a few. Thanks to their advanced 36 V brushless electric motors, these tools are smooth, powerful and very quiet which makes working with them a truly enjoyable experience.

STIHL has a wide range of optional accessories to make these tools perform optimally for a variety of applications. From accessories like the AR 900 high capacity backpack battery to the depth limiter vacuum attachment for TSA 230, you will be prepared to tackle any project with confidence knowing that you have the right tool for the job that is easy to operate and that gets the job done.

F OR A O CHANCE T

THE ADVANTAGES OF MOTOMIX ® Over the last several years, we at STIHL have been battling the ongoing challenges that we are faced with when using today’s gasoline in our handheld outdoor power equipment. Gasoline contains hundreds of additives that can have adverse effects on our equipment. One of those additives is Ethanol, which poses the largest problem in our machines. We needed to find a solution and that solution is called MotoMix ®. It’s an alkylate fuel which has been formulated by STIHL to run specifically in our machines. What’s special about it is that it doesn’t contain any of the harmful additives that gasoline does since we are able to pick and choose what goes into it. The benefits are a five year shelf life for new unopened containers, and two years once the container has been opened. This means that MotoMix ® is good for two years in the entire fuel system, including the carburetor, with no negative effects. Ethanol blended gasoline today starts a process called Phase Separation within thirty days of purchasing it and sixty days when using STIHL’s mix oil since it contains fuel stabilizer. The ethanol in the fuel is hygroscopic which means it is attracted to moisture and will bond at a molecular level. Phase Separation describes what happens to gasoline containing Ethanol when water is present. When gasoline containing even small amounts of Ethanol comes in contact with water, either liquid or in the form of humidity; the Ethanol will pick-up and absorb

2014_SpringProline_Issue13_EN_Final.indd 6

some or all of that water. When it reaches a saturation point the Ethanol and water will Phase Separate, actually coming out of solution and forming two or three distinct layers in the tank. Phase Separation can happen in an underground or an aboveground storage tank, in any type of equipment tank, and even in the gas can in your garage. When this happens, you can have serious and even catastrophic engine problems, without warning. When this Phase Separation occurs, you will have an upper layer of gasoline with a milky layer of Ethanol and water below it, and then in many cases, a third layer of just water at the bottom which is where the fuel pick-up is located in our machines. Ethanol is a strong, aggressive solvent and will cause problems with rubber hoses, o-rings, seals and gaskets. These problems are exacerbated during extended storage when significant deterioration will take place. Hoses will delaminate, o-rings will soften and break down, and fuel system components made from certain types of plastics will either soften or become hard and brittle, eventually failing. Fuel system components made from brass, copper and aluminum will oxidize to the point of failure. Most of these materials can be found in our carburetors and fuel systems. When using MotoMix ®, these issues are eliminated, therefore saving you time and money. It also burns cleaner which is beneficial to the operator, as well as, the environment.

PROTECTING TOMORROW

MAINTAINING EQUIPMENT TODAY The business of maintaining our parks and green infrastructure is truly a year round responsibility. As winter turns to spring, it will soon be time to make the change over from snow removal and winter maintenance equipment to trimmers, mowers, saws and tillers. Along with the change in weather and equipment comes the usual start up challenges. Not only has the equipment been sitting all winter, in many cases it may still contain last year’s fuel. After speaking with many small equipment mechanics in preparation for our OPA training programs, I have learned that stale or bad fuel is one of the biggest problems in getting equipment up and running for the season. Many of you are already aware of this fact and avoid potential problems by draining fuel at the end of the season and adding new, fresh fuel at start-up. Those of you who are not taking the extra time to prepare your machines for the changing seasons are most likely losing time and productivity in the end. Although almost all modern professional grade equipment comes precalibrated and ready to use, it is essential to follow proper maintenance practices as recommended by the manufacturer. Failure to do so has proven to have very negative effects on the air we breathe, the green infrastructure that we maintain and the general health and safety of the equipment operators. Stale fuel, clogged filters, improper oil gas mixes, unchanged oil, dull blades, missing guards and undersized equipment all contribute to potentially dangerous and environmentally harmful situations. When we start to add up the number of gasoline combustion engines that are operating in our sector on any given day we begin to see the impact that poorly maintained equipment can have. In thinking about this, we must not only consider commercial equipment, but that of the residential users as well. The numbers of units we are talking about on a national basis is in the millions. In the landscape sector in Ontario there are 70,000 employees and 10,000 businesses, and that does not include the public sector or farming where you could easily double those numbers. Then take into consideration how many units are being operated right across Canada and you can see how quickly the numbers begin to add up. And as the numbers increase so does the importance for reducing the negative impact on our green infrastructure. The benefits gained by proper equipment maintenance far outweigh the time and effort required. Until next time, I hope you have a busy, safe and profitable season and thank you for continuing to help us promote our mandate of Protecting Tomorrow Today®.

STIHL TRIMMER LINE… QUALITY AT ITS BEST Professional landscapers face a wide range of ground maintenance challenges every day and they need a complete set of reliable tools to quickly finish their work. Trimmer line is often an overlooked accessory that is an essential part of the package. You trust STIHL to produce the highest quality outdoor power equipment, but did you know STIHL applies the same standards of quality and reliability to their trimmer line. Every detail of STIHL trimmer line is optimized for excellent cutting in any environment.

STIHL trimmer line is only manufactured at the premier, company-owned facility in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Using proprietary manufacturing techniques exclusive to STIHL, trimmer line is produced using top quality material and subject to extensive quality testing before being shipped to the customer. You can rely on STIHL trimmer line to provide consistent high performance with each and every spool.

STIHL’s use of high-quality, blended polymers produce line that is extremely abrasion resistant, durable yet flexible, melt-proof and available in a variety of cross sections and thicknesses. Smooth surfaces with consistent outside diameters prevent line head jamming and maximizes your working time between windings. STIHL’s high performance extrusion manufacturing line with precision machined dies ensures uniform cross sections that produce the ultimate in grass cutting performance.

TRIMMER LINE TIP: During winter storage, trimmer line can age, become brittle or dry. This may result in poor working performance in the first spring cut. Trimmer line that has lost moisture due to extended storage can be submerged in water overnight. This may help revitalize the line and improve its life and performance.

CARING IS IN OUR NATURE

available on personal safety, operating equipment like hedge trimmers and trucks and trailers, and even workplace violence. Murray says training is a vital part of running a safe and profitable landscape maintenance or construction crew. “Poor training reveals itself in broken equipment, botched jobs, and, unfortunately, serious injuries,” Murray says. “All of those affect the bottom line in different ways. They also affect your company’s reputation in the marketplace. If your employees can’t handle a mower properly, your mower will break, you’ll rip up turf, and you’ll lose your client. Those things can be avoided with an early investment in training.”

When your company slogan is, “Caring is in our nature,” you better take safety seriously. For Burlington, Ontario-based landscape company Gelderman Landscape Services, safety is an important part of doing business, which is why Gelderman is working with Landscape Safety Training Systems (LST) to provide workplace and equipment safety training for its staff.

For Gelderman, the reputation factor is especially important.

“We struggled as a company as far as having a consistent method of training,” says company president Nathan Helder. “In our business you tend to hire a lot in the spring and a lot in the fall and have everybody trained all at once. It took a lot out of our daily operations.” Over the past eight years, LST’s online training modules have helped Gelderman and many other clients ease the training burden. The company offers a wide variety of computer-based lessons on ‘working with various equipment’, ‘working safety in different situations’ and ‘being more productive on the job site’. Created by experienced landscapers including LST president Jay Murray, the modules are a practical and cost-effective way to provide relevant training quickly for both new and experienced staff. “Productivity is important for any business, but in landscaping and construction, where the work season can be short, anything you can do to get your staff up to speed quickly is valuable,” Murray says. “Our modules are designed to give staff skills and knowledge to work safely and operate equipment effectively. You want your staff to be professionals, and our resources can greatly reduce the time it takes to get them where you want them to be.”

“From a sales and marketing standpoint, it’s nice to be able to tell clients that before crews are on your site they successfully have to pass some online training,” Helder says. “That just makes us stand above everybody else automatically. It’s not so much, ‘Here’s your uniform and away you go’. They have to pass online training and follow-up on site with the crew leader. That gives us a little extra bonus above the competition.” In fact, Gelderman takes the training so seriously that those employees are required to pass certain modules by specific dates or they risk losing their jobs. Even experienced staff have to go back and review modules to stay current. While safety is LST’s focus, it is now moving into modules that cover crew leadership and other topics that can help companies become more effective, efficient and profitable. “Due diligence is absolutely vital,” Murray explains. “There’s no place to hide if something goes wrong on a worksite, so companies need to do everything they can to work safely. Training is a big part of that, as is leadership. We want our products to be legitimately relevant to landscape and construction companies, as they train their staff to be their best.” By John Huff, Freelance Writer, www.huff-online.com www.gelderman.com

Most LST modules take 20-30 minutes to complete. They present the information visually and with voice narration, and include multiple choice quizzes. A module for a piece of equipment, for example, will introduce the equipment’s parts, explain how it works, and clearly demonstrate how to use it safely. Quizzes throughout the module test knowledge and unlock new sections of the presentation.

LS Training Systems Jay Murray, CLP, has managed a landscape business for 28 years and an online training business which caters to the green industry for the past 6 years. Learn more at www.LSTraining.com.

A BUSINESS powered by Stihl We are the lucky ones. Every member of our team grew up in a nature rich community. From the landscape architects, architects, computer software engineer, kinesiologist, and early childhood educator on our design team, to the arborists, horticulturists, carpenters and tradespeople in the field, everyone can run a chain saw. More importantly, everyone enjoys it and respects the craft. We all joined this team to address a growing problem in our cities where people have become disconnected from each other and from the natural world. It is ironic that in this era of ‘connectivity’ and Facebook friends, we have built a business based upon repairing the disconnect between people, and the disconnect between people and nature. We build parks and playgrounds out of the hills, trees and boulders that surround them. The aging urban forests that dominate our major cities are our palette and our supply chain. When we say that we build urban parks, we mean everything... the landform, the surfacing, the play features, furniture and forest. Our philosophy is simple. When you experience our parks and products, you will know the history of the materials by their feel, smell, taste, sound and look.

SPECIAL INTEREST STORIES

OUR RULES OF ENGAGEMENT: • • • •

Do not overwork the material. The beauty and meaning of a log or tree is found in its natural form, not in the form we impose onto it. Do not overthink the design. We must respect and reflect the patterns that appear in the landscape surrounding our parks. Build with the community not for the community. The more skills we pass on to the communities we work with, the better their parks will be. We will never take down a healthy tree to build our parks or products, and we will always plant two trees for every one we fell.

• Community is built from the shared experiences that engage all of our senses. (This sensory experience cannot be found on a screen.) • Every child should feel compelled by our work to run their hand across the rough bark and feel small next to an ancient tree. Some of our favourite projects include a slide that we carved from a 350 year old oak stump for a park in Calgary. The world’s longest carved log slide at the Ontario Science Centre, which runs through the forest parallel to their famous connecting escalator. The massive tree that we turned upside down in McCleary Playground in Toronto and the carved tree stump throne in the Morton Arboretum of Chicago. Today, we will finish the fort inside an ancient silver maple stump, and tomorrow we will begin to work a 10 tonne tree trunk into a play structure we will unveil at the National Home Show.

IN OUR PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS: • • • •

Play is unstructured, self-directed and creative, not prescriptive. Play is built on a backbone of real, raw nature. Bugs, birds, dirt, rocks, water and trees are the good stuff. Bumps, bruises and scrapes are celebrated.

HAPPY CUSTOMER!

Western Equipment, a STIHL Dealer, received this photo from a HAPPY customer on Berman Lake outside of Prince George, BC. The customer, Robin Fraser, asked Western Equipment what STIHL chain saw model they recommended. From the picture, it certainly looks like Robin put the chain saw to good use.

Safety

One of the most flagrant safety violations I see when it comes to chain saw use is how they are started. Do not drop start chain saws, it is unsafe, hard on the saw and your body. Chain saws shouldn’t require a whole bunch of pulling, cussing and holding down of the throttle. If a chain saw is put away for the winter dirty and dull, then after a few months of sitting the fuel becomes stale and the grime hardens on. Before trying to start your chain saw, especially if it has sat for a while, give it a check. Tap or brush any debris out of the air filter and give it a couple light puffs to remove dust or cobwebs. Next, fill it with fresh mixed fuel. I strongly recommend the now readily available pre-mixed fuel, like STIHL’s MotoMix®, as it lasts much longer on the shelf or in the tank. Once you have topped up your tanks and tapped out your filter, it is time to get started. The procedure for starting has two important aspects; one is how to position your body while starting a chain saw, and the other is what to do with the controls on the saw before and after starting. It is important that the saw and operator be secured when starting. The operator should be in a strong position and comfortable stance when starting, and the chain saw starting switch, chain brake and decompression button also in their correct starting positions. Operators must use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when starting and operating chain saws; head, eye, ear, leg protection, work boots and gloves. There are two widely accepted safe starting positions. One is known as the ‘leg lock’ and the other known as a ‘ground start’. Understand that these are the commonly industry accepted methods for starting a chain saw on the ground, and exceptions occur only in rare and special circumstances. I always recommend to my students that they choose the method that provides them the most stability and comfort. Always use your chain brake and decompression button when starting, and be sure that there is no one within 2 meters or 8 feet of you before starting a chain saw. The ‘leg lock’ is much like it sounds, the rear handle of the saw is squeezed or locked between the legs just above the knees, the top handle is held in the left hand and about half way down the handle. This tilts the saw slightly, allowing the starter cord to be pulled cleanly from its housing grommet. A starter cord will wear excessively if it is pulled against the housing and grommet. Next, the decompression button and the chain brake are engaged. Then, the starter handle is grasped firmly by the right hand and pulled repeatedly and forcibly until the saw fires and/or starts. The leg lock is a AND popular method as it keeps the saw and chain away from sand, mud, snow or debris commonly found on the ground. The ‘leg lock’ is also preferred because it makes it easier to get comfortably positioned when working on uneven terrain, in addition, people prefer standing over having to bend over or kneel. (It should be noted for our readers in the Maritimes, that this method is not allowed in Newfoundland according to provincial legislation.) The ‘ground start’ is the most common method used for starting a chain saw. There are some variances in this method but the concept remains the same. The saw is placed on the ground or floor, the brake and decompression engaged. The top handle is grasped in the left hand and the operator kneels beside the saw securing the saw body with a knee or by placing their foot on or against the rear handle, whatever is most comfortable to achieve control of the saw. The starter handle is grasped and the starter cord is pulled forcibly and repeatedly until the saw fires and/or starts. Keep your body on the starter side of the saw; this improves safety by keeping you away from the chain. Ground starting a chain saw on the wrong side puts you dangerously OR close to the bar and cutters. Personal safety and control are important things to remember when starting and working with a chain saw. There have been many features and innovations to make chain saw starting easier and safer. One such feature is the decompression button. Modern chain saws that have 40 cc’s of displacement or greater, have a decompression button to make it easier to pull through the compression stroke when starting. It is wise to use this when starting saws in this size range. Another feature to make starting easier and safer is in the area of carburation. The modern chain saw is becoming more sophisticated in carburetor technology to improve overall safety and control when starting and operating chain saws. The introduction of computer modulated carburetors has changed and improved how chain saws run and start. The starting procedure for the traditional carbureted chain saw is different from the newest and most modern chain saw. I will explain the differences and starting procedures for traditional carbureted saws and for the new and improved computer carbureted saws. Traditionally carbureted chain saw starting switches have four positons, on, off, high-idle and choke; they are all integrated into one switch with four positions. To turn the saw ‘on’ the switch is moved to the first position. This is where the switch should be when starting a warm saw. When starting a cold saw, you must apply the choke. This is done by moving the switch to the fourth or choke position while depressing the throttle.

Starting Traditional Carbureted Chain Saws The following starting procedure is for starting a cold saw, and when followed exactly, works very effectively for cold starting traditional carbureted saws; Step 1 - Be sure the saw switch is in the full choke position and the chain brake and decompression button are engaged. Step 2 - Grab a firm hold on the saw top handle. Step 3 - Choose starting position: • Leg Lock Position - secure the rear handle of the saw by squeezing it between your legs just above your knees. • Ground Start Position - place saw on a flat footing, resting a knee on top of the saw or securing rear handle with your foot. Step 4 - Firmly grasp the starting handle and pull forcibly. Step 5 - Pull forcibly on the starter cord until the saw fires, even a brief fire is sufficient. Step 6 - Re-engage the decompression button, as the ignition will have released it. Step 7 - Very important at this point to turn the choke off, missing this step will flood the saw. Step 8 - Continue to pull the starter cord. Step 9 - When the saw starts, let go of the starter cord and grasp the rear handle. Step 10 - Squeeze the throttle once and quickly release it. This will disengage the high idle. The following procedure is for starting a warm traditional carbureted saw. To start a warm saw the steps are fewer. A warm saw is a saw that has been operated within the past 50 minutes or less. A saw that has remained off for more than one hour should be started using the cold start procedure. Step 1 - Be sure the saw switch is on and chain brake and decompression are engaged. Step 2 - Grab a firm hold of the saw’s top handle. Step 5 - Pull on the starter cord until the saw starts. Step 6 - When the saw starts, let go of the starter cord, grasp the rear handle and decompression releases automatically. The most modern chain saws like the STIHL MS 241, an excellent mid-range powerful all-purpose saw, are computer carbureted and all chain saws with this new technology have three starting switch positions and require a different starting procedure. In case you are wondering, the starting switch is the best indication whether your saw has this new technology or not. Computer modulated chain saw carburetors do not have a choke position on the switch. If the starting switch on your saw has only three positions, instead of four, it is most likely computer modulated. Computer carbureted chain saw starting switches have three positons, off, run/on and start. These positions are integrated into one three position switch. Many of these switches also have an auto return feature. All types of switches have to be manually pushed to the off position. However, many of these new switches require the switch be held in the off position until the saw shuts off. When the switch is released, it automatically moves back into the on/run position for the next use, this saves on accidental flooding and is an excellent innovation. In order to start a computer carbureted chain saw, it is recommended that the switch be in the start or third position indicated by the delta . It is recommended that this starting procedure be followed for cold or warm starts, making the starting procedure much simpler and the risk of flooding highly unlikely. Starting Computer Carbureted Chain Saws The starting procedure for a warm or cold start of a computer carbureted chain saw is the same and as follows; Step 1 - Be sure the saw chain brake and decompression button are engaged. Step 2 - Position the starting switch to the start or third position. Step 3 - Grab a firm hold of the saw top handle. Step 4 - Choose starting position: • Leg Lock Position - secure the rear handle of the saw by squeezing it between your legs just above your knees. • Ground Start Position - place saw on a flat footing, resting a knee on top of the saw or securing rear handle with your foot. Step 5 - Firmly grasp the starting handle and pull forcibly. Step 6 - Pull on the starter cord until the saw starts. Step 7 - When the saw starts, let go of the starter cord and grasp the rear handle. Step 8 - Squeeze and release throttle. This will switch saw to run mode, decompression releases automatically. Before starting and using your chain saw, dress in all of the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and by following these step by step procedures, you and your chain saw can get started with safety.

THE USE OF HEARING PROTECTION

TO PREVENT NOISE INDUCED HEARING LOSS By proactively recognizing that noise from certain machines or events that you are going to attend may be loud, you can be better prepared. Whether you’re going to trim the hedges, cut the grass, or fell a tree, you know that the equipment you will use is noisy. By making the decision to bring and use earmuffs or earplugs, you are able to reduce your exposures – it really is that simple! Before starting, insert your earplugs or place your muffs over your ears to help ensure your hearing will be protected from high noise levels. If you are going to a sporting event, a movie or concert, the noise levels will likely be elevated, so insert your earplugs. The use of hearing protection at concerts was once unheard of (no pun intended), but a quick look around the audience may reveal that you are

not the only one that values their hearing. In fact, most musicians wear hearing protection when they practice and perform. Hearing protection is designed to lower all the frequencies of noise, so that only the damaging amplitude of sound will be lessened. The quality of the music or spoken words will not be affected.

For more information on hearing protective equipment, contact your local STIHL Dealer or 3M representative.

REGULATIONS & STANDARDS FOR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT USE ACROSS CANADA Wouldn’t it be nice to have one standard for personal protective equipment (PPE) that was easy to understand and used for all of Canada? Unfortunately the Canadian regulations resemble a patchwork quilt or mosaic and are best appreciated from a distance. This article is an overview of the current regulatory situation for PPE in Canada. For specific details about regulatory requirements in your area, please contact the appropriate government officials. The federal government is responsible for establishing and enforcing health and safety laws at locations and sites under their own jurisdiction. Examples of this include federal military bases, airports, Canada Post buildings and banks. Similarly, provinces are responsible for setting and enforcing their own laws regarding health and safety in their province. Therefore, the laws often vary between provinces and the federal government. Often, provinces review their counterparts’ laws when considering changes or additions to their laws, but they tend to model their regulations around their specific needs. For instance, most provinces allow American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved hardhats to be used by workers. However, British Columbia additionally allows hardhats approved to the Japanese Industrial Standard. Another example of these differences can be seen with the use of Assigned Protection Factors (APF) for respirators. Although most provinces use CSA APFs, they may each use other associations’ APFs. Ontario uses NIOSH APFs for instance and British Columbia uses both CSA APFs, as well as, setting some of their own APFs. This can be very confusing, especially if the employer has multiple Canadian locations across Canada or the worker travels from province to province for work.

2014_SpringProline_Issue13_EN_Final.indd 13

A recent trend by some provinces is to adopt into their laws “the latest or most current” CSA standard or other well recognized guideline. There are certainly some good aspects to this, including more consistency throughout Canada, though there are some flaws with this approach as well. The first flaw is allowing a consensus organization to make the laws for personal protective equipment. Regulations should be established by our elected officials. Another concern is the frequency of change of these guidelines or standards. For instance, the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) is a private, notfor-profit, nongovernmental American corporation that annually publishes occupational exposure limits for a variety of chemical, physical and biological agents. In their Statement of Position the ACGIH says their occupational exposure limits are, “guidelines to be used by professionals trained in the practice of industrial hygiene. The TLVs® and BEIs® are not designed to be used as standards.” They further state that, “the TLVs® and BEIs® are based solely on the health factors, [and] there is no consideration given to economic or technical feasibility”. It is important that economic and technical practicability be considered in all laws to avoid a potential conflict between what is legally required and what can practically be done. Additionally, with the annual changes in occupational exposure limits, what might be allowed for PPE can also change, creating confusion for both workers and employers.

To better understand what is required for PPE at your site or location, help is available through your local STIHL Dealer or 3M representative.

SPECIAL INTEREST STORIES

You may have noticed that your car radio is too loud in the morning or that you have to ask friends and family to speak up or clearly annunciate their words. These are signs that your hearing acuity is waning. Generally, hearing loss is subtle and occurs over a number of years. As children, most of us had very good hearing. However, exposure to loud noises over the years can damage your hearing. From music being played too loud to excessive noise from appliances such as vacuums, blenders and lawn mowers used at home, we are constantly exposed to high volumes of sound. When entering the work place we may be further exposed to the noise from equipment such as grinders, pneumatic tools, internal combustion engines or vibrating equipment.

Over the years, safety eyewear has become like regular eyewear: driven by fashion and the wearer’s perception of how it looks on their face. There is nothing wrong with choosing eye protection that looks good, but it’s important to remember that the most critical factor when selecting safety eyewear is the fit. Simply put, if it doesn’t fit correctly then it doesn’t protect your eyes. When hearing protection doesn’t fit properly, it becomes relatively obvious as there is little to no change in the noise level around you, and when respirators don’t fully cover your face, you may notice solvent odours or dust inside the respirator. Understanding whether your eye protection is fitting correctly, however, may not be as easy. Safety eyewear plays a vital role in the workplace as it ensures the health and safety of your vision, which is why it is just as important to take time to consider whether you are getting the proper fit from your eyewear. When considering what it means to have a good Protective Eyewear Fit, there are four essential components you must consider: • View: the ability to see in all directions when wearing the eyewear. • Security: ensuring the eyewear stays in place on the face and does not fall with head movement. • Coverage: how well the eyewear covers the soft tissue area around the eyes.

ARBORIST

• Gaps: the excessive space between the eyewear and the face (larger gaps can provide a clear path for flying debris).

As we all know, the diamond wheel market is extremely competitive and we find ourselves searching for answers when we are asked what actually makes a STIHL diamond wheel ultimately a better value for today’s professional. Here are some reasons why STIHL diamond wheels are number one in the industry.

16” - 36 GBE Diamond Abrasive Chain #3211 000 0064

Let’s start with the diamonds used in the STIHL wheels. Only the highest quality diamonds are used in the segments. The quality of the diamond has a significant impact on the performance of the wheel. Not just the life of the wheel but the cut rate as well. Both are significantly increased with the use of the highest quality diamonds. Also, there is a consistent concentration of diamonds in the segments. All of this contributes to a higher level of heat resistance as well. This allows the wheel to stay in the cut longer and ultimately making the STIHL wheel a more productive cutting tool.

NEW STIHL Manual Sprayers STIHL is proud to introduce our NEW line-up of manual sprayers. These durable, high-quality sprayers are German engineered with ergonomics and functionality being a priority. Features such as ergonomically placed controls, brass nozzles and integrated measuring cups (SG 51 & SG 71) will make your work enjoyable. Whether you’re applying fungicide to your roses, dormant oil to your backyard fruit trees or rows of berry bushes; STIHL has the sprayer for you. • SG 11 – 1.5 litre handheld sprayer • SG 31 – 5 litre handheld sprayer

The STIHL diamond wheels also utilize a patented high density sintering process used to create the diamond segments. This involves using higher heat and pressure from both sides to create a denser, more uniform bond matrix than the competition. This patented process ensures that there are no voids in the bond matrix which could contribute to premature diamond loss. It also allows for better cooling of the segment, both of which means a longer wheel life.

We have talked about the diamonds used in the segments and the bond matrix that holds the diamonds. Another important element is the steel cores used in the STIHL wheels. Our

The net result of all of these features is that when compared to other brands, it is easy to see that STIHL is a market leader in durability and performance. In a competitive environment where you rely on these tools for your livelihood, you need a dependable wheel that can stand up to a wide range of tough cutting conditions. The expanding line of STIHL diamond wheels is just the tool you need, no matter how tough the job. By Vince Wiley, National Sales Manager of Tyrolit Industrial Abrasives

Lastly, all STIHL diamond wheels for cutting asphalt are manufactured using undercut protection which provides the necessary means to clear out the abrasive slurry during the cutting process to minimize the risk of undercutting and ultimately segment loss.

This NEW jacket is made of the same durable cotton/ polyester blend as the pants; offering excellent breathability and water resistance. A large area of high-viz orange makes this jacket a great option for any job site. • • • • •

Each connection of the segment to the core is tested to verify the strength of the bond. Additionally, the gullets used on the STIHL diamond wheels are specially designed to remove heat and for fast slurry removal. All wheels are surface finished on the key hole to minimize the risk of cracking.

ACCESSORIES

STIHL’s NEW Economy Plus protective apparel is designed with many of the same features the pro’s expect, yet is priced for homeowners and occasional users who want to look good and stay protected. While the pant does not meet a Canadian professional standard, it is certified to the EN (European) Class 1 chain saw standard (front protection only). If you’re cutting wood on the farm, at the cottage or in the backyard, you’ll love these comfortable, high quality pants.

hardened steel core provides durability over the life of the wheel and provides a smooth, precise cut every time. Additionally, all STIHL diamond wheels are tensioned for strength. The tensioning assures that the wheels will not bow or wobble. Wheels that are not tensioned, or are not tensioned properly, increase the risk of kickback. Many of the lower cost wheels on the market may not be tensioned. And it is also safe to say that quite a few are certainly not tensioned properly.
