District News: New opportunities for learning
Scandia Elementary joins exclusive International Baccalaureate program Scandia Elementary announced earlier this year that it has received accreditation from the highlyacclaimed International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. The school joins an exclusive group of only 23 other Minnesota elementary schools participating in the IB Primary Years Programme, which focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquisitive learner, both in the classroom and the world beyond. Scandia Elementary School’s designation as an IB school marks the completion of a two-year accreditation process.
Children enrolled in an IB Primary Years Programme become curious, fully engaged citizens. More than memorizing facts, the program focuses on conceptual learning and helps students develop problemsolving skills that will last a lifetime. In addition, the program encourages students to become responsible members of their community and the world. There is a strong international dimension that gives special emphasis on learning languages. At Scandia Elementary, that means each child receives instruction in Chinese at every grade level.
One of the highlights of an IB school is the integration of key themes into academic learning. These themes help students think and act on both a local and global level. The themes include: Who we are Where we are in place and time How we express ourselves How the world works
