Esbjörn Svensson had considered a symphonic setting for his music in the years before his tragic death in 2008. Eight years on and this striking new release E.S.T. SYMPHONY fulfils that wish. The esteemed Swedish arranger-conductor Hans Ek has arranged an outstanding selection of Esbjörn’s compositions from the band's rich 13 album catalogue for a widescreen orchestral canvas. Performed exquisitely by the 90-piece Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Ek’s orchestrations integrate organically with solo contributions from a handful of Scandi-jazz superstars of today and tomorrow. Christmas With My Friends V NILS LANDGREN It was a simple but hugely effective festive idea for the Swedish trombonist and ACT mainstay, Nils Landgren - to gather friends around him and play an assortment of Christmas songs. In 2006, on went the red satin dinner jacket for the very first time, and “Christmas With My Friends” was born. The concert in the ancient Odensala Church in Stockholm was recorded, and then issued as a CD. It was to prove the beginning of an unprecedented success story. When things go this well, there is no earthly reason to break with tradition. For this tenth anniversary the participants have been absolutely rearing to go, and to do it all over again. And their mission to spread a message of peace is now certainly more current and more urgent than it ever was. So, welcome “Christmas With My Friends V".

Pan! The Steel Drum Odyssey VARIOUS ARTISTS The film tells the turbulent birth of this instrument in the poor neighbourhoods of Port of Spain, capital of Trinidad & Tobago, in a docudrama style that combines fiction and documentary. Directed by Jérôme Guiot and Thierry Teston, produced by Jean-Michel Gibert and Barthélémy Fougea, this 80-minute film puts into perspective the social context in which the steel pan appeared. The common thread is the story of Goldteeth, a young ghetto boy who conceives the first pan using a 55-gallon drum and strives to spread its use despite the scorn of naysayers. The scenes played by actors are interspersed with interviews of witnesses and protagonists of the movement such as arranger Boogsie Sharpe or tuner Clifford Alfred. Furthermore the presence of a Japanese and a French female panman embody the dizzying spread of the practice of the pan worldwide.

The CD soundtrack notably includes pieces from Ray Holman, one of the great steelband composers, plus Andy Narell (composer and arranger of the group Birdsong) and Boogsie Sharpe (the brilliant composer for Phase II Pan Groove), these groups being two being representative of the dynamic of both conservation and evolution that is going through this music. The CD is spiced with some bonus tracks of the distinguished King and Queen of calypso namely Mighty Sparrow and Calypso Rose.
