SOUTHWEST UFO DISCOVERY TOUR TOUR II – ARIZONA & NEVADA IN FLIGHT - to Albuquerque, New Mexico (ABQ) APRIL 13: ALBUQUERQUE - Petroglyph National Monument Pick-up this morning at Albuquerque International Sunport, and transfer to Petroglyph National Monument. Archaeologists have estimated there may be over 25,000 petroglyph images along the 17 miles of escarpment within the monument boundary. Petroglyphs are rock carvings (rock paintings are called pictographs) made by pecking directly on the rock surface using a stone chisel and a hammer (stone). After some time in the visitor's center, we will walk through the monument. Lunch. This afternoon we continue south to Socorro, where we will visit sites connected to the Lonnie Zamora 1964 UFO sighting. Late afternoon check-in at our hotel and freshen up before dinner. Hotel check out this morning, and continue west past the tiny hamlet of Magdalena to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. On our Tour of the Very Large Array (VLA), we will learn how the 27 dish-shaped antennas are spread out across the plains of San Agustin, forming a single gigantic radio telescope. Many people recognize the site from the 1997 movie Contact, starring Jodie Foster. Lunch. This afternoon we continue our journey from New Mexico to Show Low and Snowflake, Arizona. During our drive through the ApacheSitgreaves National Forest, we will hear about the Travis Walton story, the basis for the book, Fire in the Sky by Travis Walton.
