There are several scholarships available that have specific criteria and requirements, as noted below. If you would like to be considered, please complete the following and submit your essays along with the Saint Joseph Academy Common Scholarship Application – Class of 2017. Please note that separate applications are required for the Sursum Corda Scholarship, Music Scholarship and Visual Arts Scholarship.

Holly Banner ’98 Endowed Memorial Scholarship Criteria: Must have an interest in writing, maintain a “C” overall average and demonstrate financial need as evidenced by the Private School Aid Service (PSAS) application. Requirements: Submit a letter of recommendation from any of your teachers or principal verifying grade average and interest in writing. Applicants should submit a short essay (no longer than 250 words) describing how she developed an interest in writing and what influence it has had on her life. Attach a separate sheet of paper for your essay. Please include your name and scholarship name on the top of the essay. Finalists must participate in a personal interview conducted by Mr. and Mrs. Banner.

Sursum Corda Scholarship Application Class of 2017 Through the generosity of its donors, Saint Joseph Academy is able to offer ten $2,000 Sursum Corda Scholarships to the Class of 2017. The scholarship is renewable each year based upon maintaining a 3.0 GPA and continued commitment to service. In addition to this application, you must also complete the Saint Joseph Academy Common Scholarship Application – Class of 2017.

One of Saint Joseph Academy’s all-school themes is “Serving the Dear Neighbor.” Please give two examples of how you are or have been involved in service-related activities at your school, church or in your community. 2. Service opportunities abound at SJA and are available through our CORE Ministry Department as well as through a student’s involvement in specific service-related clubs. Music Scholarship A limited number of scholarships of varying amounts will be awarded to students for vocal and instrumental music. Criteria: 1. Applicants must show previous involvement in music. 2. Applicants must have a minimum of a “B” average. 3. Applicants must enroll in a music course in the 2013-2014 academic year and be involved in Music Ministry. Requirements: 1. Applicants must complete the application information requested below. 2. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from her current music instructor. 3. Applicants must audition in voice or with major instrument (see below). 4. Applicants must complete and submit the Saint Joseph Academy Common Scholarship Application – Class of 2017. Audition: The audition, which will be scheduled upon receipt of this application, involves the performance of a solo (on the student’s major instrument or voice) within the following guidelines: 1. Instrumentalist may play with or without accompaniment. Vocalists may sing with a pre-recording or an accompanist. 2. Length of audition should be a three-minute period, preferably using serious music literature, including Broadway. 3. A copy of the music must be provided at the audition. 4. Instrumentalist should be able to perform scales memorized up to 3#’s and 3b’s in major keys. Applicants may be asked to sight-read a piece as well.

Visual Arts Scholarship A limited number of scholarships of varying amounts will be awarded to students for visual arts. Criteria: 1. Applicants must show previous involvement in visual arts. 2. Applicants must have a minimum of a “B” average in art. 3. Applicants must enroll in a visual arts course in the 2013-2014 academic year. Requirements: 1. Applicants must complete the application information requested below. 2. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from her current art instructor. 3. Applicants must submit a portfolio of her artwork (see below). 4. Applicant must complete and submit the Saint Joseph Academy Common Scholarship Application – Class of 2017. Portfolio: The portfolio must be submitted by December 3, 2012 to Saint Joseph Academy and meet the following guidelines:

1. Contain a minimum of five, to a maximum of ten, examples of recently created artwork. 2. Contain a variety of media and subject matter. Ideally black and white, color and three-dimensional projects should be represented.

3. The maximum size of submitted art is 18 x 24 inches. Three dimensional works must be photographed for submission. 4. All submitted items, including the portfolio or container, must bear the artist’s name.

Saint Joseph Academy Scholarships - Class of 2017 Saint Joseph Academy Academic Scholarships SJA offers 18 awards ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, based on a student’s placement test score and personal interview with the scholarship committee. These awards are renewable each year. Recipients are required to maintain a 3.6 GPA.

Saint Joseph Academy Sursum Corda Scholarship

Sursum Corda – Lift Up Your Heart. This award acknowledges a student’s commitment to service – within her school, parish and community. Ten $2,000 awards are available and are renewable each year. Recipients are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA and continued commitment to service. Separate application required.

Saint Joseph Academy Alumnae Scholarship

Saint Joseph Academy is proud of its legacy connections – approximately 37% of our current students have legacy connections. A limited number of $500 scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen and sophomores with relatives (mother, grandmother, aunt, etc.) who attended Saint Joseph, Nazareth or Saint Therese Academies.

Holly Banner ’98 Endowed Memorial Scholarship

This $500 scholarship honors the memory of an outstanding and courageous young woman, Holly Banner ’98. Sadly, health complications resulted in non-Hodgkin lymphoma and she succumbed to her illness in April 2005, but not before achieving her goal of becoming a writer. Separate essay required.

Nancy Slominsky Charney ’77 Endowed Scholarship This $500 scholarship was established by Nancy Slominsky Charney ’77 because of her belief in the benefits of an all-girls education and her desire to help other young women benefit from the Saint Joseph Academy experience. Applicants must submit the PSAS form and live in Cleveland in a single-parent household.

Joan A. Dever Conrad ’49 Endowed Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship was established through the generosity of Joan A. Dever Conrad ’49. Mrs. Conrad is a longtime supporter, past Board member and friend of the Academy. Applicants must submit the PSAS form.

Barbara Tarchanin Flower ’52 Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Two $500 scholarships were established in memory of Barbara Tarchanin Flower ’52 by her husband, Mr. Howard Flower, family and friends. Applicants must submit the PSAS form and be a resident of Cleveland, preferably the Tremont area.

J. Howard Flower Endowed Scholarship

One $1,000 scholarship is available through a gift from Mr. J. Howard Flower, a long time friend of Saint Joseph Academy. Applicants must submit the PSAS form.

Sister Edith Frantz, CSJ 1908 Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Two $1,000 scholarships are available to students committed to service within their school, church or community. Sister Edith Frantz, CSJ 1908 was a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph who served Saint Joseph Academy for many years as Coordinator of the Bookstore. Applicants must submit the PSAS form.

The Dr. Michael and Catherine Gallagher Endowed Scholarship in Memory of Sister Dorothy Ogurchock, CSJ This renewable $500 scholarship is available to students with in an interest in both math and science. Applicants must submit the PSAS form.

Thomas and Patricia Kane Gardner ’48 Endowed Memorial Scholarship

This $500 renewable scholarship was established in loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. Gardner by their family and friends.

Sister Brigid Griffin, CSJ Endowed Memorial Scholarship

Two $500 scholarships were established by the family and friends of Sister Brigid Griffin, CSJ ’42. She began teaching at Saint Joseph Academy in 1952 and served as Principal of Saint Joseph Academy from 1963-1967, and then was named as Mother Superior of the Congregation of St. Joseph. In 1973, she was elected president of the first administrative team for the Congregation of St. Joseph and held that position until 1976. Applicants must submit the PSAS form.

Faustin and Lucille Hack Endowed Scholarship

Two $500 scholarships were established in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Hack by their children, daughters Jacquelyn Hack Plenzler ’58, Patricia Hack Coleman ’67, Bernadette (Bobbi) Hack Hallahan ’69, and their three sons, Edward, Timothy and Tom, in gratitude for their Catholic education. Applicants must submit the PSAS. Preference given to students who attended St. Angela Merici or St. Brendan’s elementary schools.

Sister Theodore Kline, CSJ Endowed Memorial Scholarship

This $500 scholarship was established in loving memory of Sister Theodore Kline, CSJ, a beloved English teacher at Saint Joseph Academy from 1953 until her retirement in 1995. Applicants must submit the PSAS form and maintain an “A” in English.

Patrick William & Catherine Prendergast Malloy Endowed Memorial Scholarship

This $500 scholarship was established by Helen Claire Malloy ’57 in loving memory of her parents in appreciation for the sacrifices they made to send her to Saint Joseph Academy. Applicants must submit the PSAS form. Preference given to student living in the West Park area.

Dr. Joseph and Mrs. Maureen Baddour Moses ’67 Endowed Scholarship

Two $500 scholarships were established by Maureen Baddour Moses ‘67 and her husband, Dr. Joseph Moses, in recognition of the education she received at Saint Joseph Academy. Maureen Baddour Moses ’67 was the first of five sisters to graduate from Saint Joseph Academy. Applicants must submit the PSAS form.

Music and Visual Arts Scholarships

Several scholarships ranging from $100 to $500 are available. An audition or portfolio submission is required. Separate applications required.

The St. Joseph Scholar Endowed Memorial Scholarship This $500 scholarship was established by an anonymous donor who remains a strong supporter of Saint Joseph Academy and who wishes to help a student receive an excellent Catholic high school education. Applicants must submit the PSAS form.

Bernice Doyle Straub ’39 Endowed Memorial Scholarship

This $500 scholarship was established in loving memory of Bernice Doyle Straub ’39 by members of her family. Applicants must submit the PSAS form.
